Jeremías 37

EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS	NEW JERUSALEM
1 El rey Sedecías, hijo de Josías –a quien Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia, había constituido rey en el país de Judá– reinó en lugar de Conías, hijo de Joaquím.	1 Zedekiah son of Josiah became king, succeeding Coniah son of Jehoiakim. Nebuchadnezzar king ofBabylon had made him king of Judah.
2 Pero ni él, ni sus servidores, ni el pueblo del país escucharon las palabras que había dicho el Señor por medio del profeta Jeremías.	2 But neither he nor his courtiers nor the people of the country paid any attention to the words Yahwehspoke through the prophet Jeremiah.
3 El rey Sedecías envió a Iucal, hijo de Selemías, y al sacerdote Sefanías, hijo de Maasías, para que dijeran al profeta Jeremías: «Ruega por nosotros al Señor, nuestro Dios».	3 King Zedekiah sent Jehucal son of Shelemiah and the priest Zephaniah son of Maaseiah to the prophetJeremiah with this message, 'Intercede for us with Yahweh our God.'
4 Mientras tanto, Jeremías se desplazaba libremente en medio del pueblo, y aún no lo habían puesto en la cárcel.	4 Now Jeremiah was still moving freely among the people: he had not yet been put in prison.
5 Además, las tropas del Faraón habían salido de Egipto, y los caldeos que sitiaban a Jerusalén, al oír la noticia, habían levantado el asedio.	5 Meanwhile Pharaoh's army was on the move from Egypt and the Chaldaeans besieging Jerusalem hadraised the siege when they heard the news.
6 La palabra del Señor llegó al profeta Jeremías, en estos términos:	6 Then the word of Yahweh came to the prophet Jeremiah as fol ows,
7 Así habla el Señor, el Dios de Israel: Esto es lo que le dirán al rey de Judá, que los envía a consultarme: El ejército del Faraón que salió en auxilio de ustedes, se volverá a su país, a Egipto.	7 'Yahweh, God of Israel, says this, "To the king of Judah who sent you to consult me make this reply: IsPharaoh's army marching to your aid? It wil withdraw to its own country, Egypt.
8 Entonces los caldeos volverán, combatirán contra esta ciudad, la tomarán y la incendiarán.	8 The Chaldaeans wil return to attack this city; they will capture it and burn it down.
9 Así habla el Señor: No se engañen a ustedes mismos, diciendo: «Seguro que los caldeos se irán lejos de nosotros». ¡Porque ellos no se irán!	9 Yahweh says this: Do not cheer yourselves up by thinking: The Chaldaeans are leaving us for good.They are not leaving.
10 Aun cuando derrotaran a todo el ejército de los caldeos que combaten contra ustedes, y no les quedaran más que algunos heridos, estos se levantarían cada uno en su carpa y prenderían fuego a esta ciudad.	10 Even if you cut to pieces the whole Chaldaean army now fighting against you until there were only thewounded left, they would stand up again, each man in his tent, to burn this city down." '
11 Como el ejército de los caldeos se había alejado de Jerusalén por el avance de las tropas del Faraón,	11 At the time when the Chaldaean army, threatened by Pharaoh's army, had raised the siege ofJerusalem,
12 Jeremías quiso salir de Jerusalén para ir al país de Benjamín, a fin de ocuparse allí de una repartición de bienes en medio de los suyos.	12 Jeremiah set out from Jerusalem for the territory of Benjamin to see about a piece of his propertyamong the people there.
13 Y mientras estaba en la puerta de Benjamín, donde se encontraba un capitán de guardias llamado Jirías, hijo de Selemías, hijo de Ananías, este detuvo al profeta Jeremías, diciendo: «¡Vas a pasarte a los caldeos!».	13 He was at the Benjamin Gate when the guard commander there, a certain Irijah son of Shelemiah,son of Hananiah, arrested the prophet Jeremiah, shouting, 'You are deserting to the Chaldaeans!'
14 Jeremías respondió: «¡Es falso! Yo no me paso del lado de los caldeos». Pero Jirías no lo escuchó; detuvo a Jeremías y lo llevó ante los jefes.	14 Jeremiah answered, 'It is a lie! I am not deserting to the Chaldaeans.' But Irijah would not listen toJeremiah and took him under arrest to the chief men.
15 Estos se irritaron contra Jeremías, lo golpearon y lo encarcelaron en la casa de Jonatán, el secretario, que habían convertido en prisión.	15 And the chief men, furious with Jeremiah, had him beaten and shut up in the house of the scribeJonathan, which had been turned into a prison.
16 Así Jeremías fue a parar dentro de una cisterna abovedada y pasó allí mucho tiempo.	16 Thus Jeremiah found himself in an underground vault. And there for a long time he stayed.
17 El rey Sedecías lo mandó atraer, y lo interrogó secretamente en su propia casa, diciendo: «¿Hay alguna palabra de parte del Señor?». «Sí», respondió Jeremías, y añadió: «Tú serás entregado en manos del rey de Babilonia».	17 Later, King Zedekiah had him sent for, and the king questioned him privately in his palace. 'Is thereany word from Yahweh?' he asked. 'There is,' Jeremiah answered, and added, 'you wil be handed over to theking of Babylon.'
18 Luego Jeremías dijo al rey Sedecías: «¿Qué falta cometí contra ti, contra tus servidores y contra este pueblo, para que me hayan puesto en una prisión?	18 Jeremiah then said to King Zedekiah, 'What wrong have I done you, or your courtiers or this people,for you to have put me in prison?
19 ¿Dónde están los profetas que les profetizaban, diciendo: El rey de Babilonia no vendrá contra ustedes ni contra este país?	19 Where are your prophets now who prophesied, "The king of Babylon wil not attack you or thiscountry"?
20 Y ahora, ¡dígnate escuchar, rey, mi señor! Que mi súplica llegue hasta ti: ¡No me hagas volver a la casa de Jonatán, el secretario, no sea que muera allí!».	20 So now I beg you to hear me, my lord king! I beg you to approve my request! Do not have me takenback to the house of the scribe Jonathan, or I shall die there.'
21 Entonces el rey Sedecías mandó poner bajo custodia a Jeremías en el patio de la guardia, y ordenó que le dieran cada día una rosca de pan de la calle de los Panaderos, hasta que no hubiera más pan en la ciudad. Y Jeremías permaneció en el patio de la guardia.	21 King Zedekiah then gave an order, and Jeremiah was confined in the Court of the Guard and given aloaf of bread a day from the Street of the Bakers as long as there was bread left in the city. So Jeremiah stayedin the Court of the Guard.
