EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Sí, yo me puse a pensar en todo esto y vi que los justos, los sabios y sus acciones están en la mano de Dios. Pero el hombre ni siquiera sabe si es objeto de amor o de aversión. Todo lo que está ante él es vanidad,	1 Yes, I have applied myself to all this and experienced all this to be so: that is to say, that the upright andthe wise, with their activities, are in the hands of God. We do not understand either love or hate, where we areconcerned, both of them are
2 porque a todos les espera la misma suerte: al justo y al impío, al bueno y al malo, al puro y al impuro, al que ofrece sacrificios y al que no los ofrece; lo mismo le pasa al bueno y al pecador, al que jura y al que teme hacer un juramento.	2 futile. And for all of us is reserved a common fate, for the upright and for the wicked, for the good andfor the bad; whether we are ritually pure or not, whether we offer sacrifice or not: it is the same for the good andfor the sinner, for someone who takes a vow, as for someone who fears to do so.
3 Esto es lo malo en todo lo que sucede bajo el sol: como es igual la suerte de todos, el corazón de los hombres se llena de maldad, la locura está dentro de ellos mientras viven, y después, acaban entre los muertos.	3 This is another evil among those occurring under the sun: that there should be the same fate foreveryone. The human heart, however, is ful of wickedness; fol y lurks in our hearts throughout our lives, until weend among the dead.
4 Mientras uno está unido a todos los vivientes, siempre hay esperanza, porque «más vale perro vivo que león muerto».	4 But there is hope for someone stil linked to the rest of the living: better be a live dog than a dead lion.
5 Los vivos, en efecto, saben que morirán, pero los muertos no saben nada: para ellos ya no hay retribución, porque su recuerdo cayó en el olvido.	5 The living are at least aware that they are going to die, but the dead know nothing whatever. No morewages for them, since their memory is forgotten.
6 Se han esfumado sus amores, sus odios y sus rivalidades, y nunca más podrán compartir todo lo que se hace bajo el sol.	6 Their love, their hate, their jealousy, have perished long since, and they wil never have any further partin what goes on under the sun.
7 Ve, entonces, come tu pan con alegría y bebe tranquilamente tu vino, porque a Dios ya le agradaron tus obras.	7 So, eat your bread in joy, drink your wine with a glad heart, since God has already approved youractions.
8 Que tu ropa sea siempre blanca y nunca falte el perfume en tu cabeza.	8 At al times, dress in white and keep your head wel scented.
9 Goza de la vida con la mujer que amas, mientras dure esa vana existencia que Dios te concede bajo el sol, porque esa es tu parte en la vida y en el esfuerzo que realizas bajo el sol.	9 Spend your life with the woman you love, all the days of futile life God gives you under the sun,throughout your futile days, since this is your lot in life and in the effort you expend under the sun.
10 Todo lo que esté al alcance de tu mano realízalo con tus propias fuerzas, porque no hay obra, ni proyecto, ni ciencia, ni sabiduría, en el Abismo adonde tú irás.	10 Whatever work you find to do, do it with al your might, for there is neither achievement, nor planning,nor science, nor wisdom in Sheol where you are going.
11 Además, yo vi otra cosa bajo el sol: la carrera no la gana el más veloz, ni el más fuerte triunfa en el combate; el pan no pertenece al más sabio, ni la riqueza al más inteligente, ni es favorecido el más capaz, porque en todo interviene el tiempo y el azar.	11 Another thing I have observed under the sun: that the race is not won by the speediest, nor the battleby the champions; it is not the wise who get food, nor the intel igent wealth, nor the learned favour: chance andmischance befall them all.
12 El hombre no sabe cuándo llega su hora: como los peces atrapados en la red fatal, como los pájaros aprisionados por el lazo, así los hombres se ven sorprendidos por la adversidad cuando cae de improviso sobre ellos.	12 We do not know when our time will come: like fish caught in the treacherous net, like birds caught inthe snare, just so are we al trapped by misfortune when it suddenly overtakes us.
13 También he visto bajo el sol un caso de sabiduría que considero realmente notable	13 Here is another example of the wisdom I have acquired under the sun and it strikes me as important:
14 Había una pequeña ciudad, con pocos habitantes; un gran rey la atacó, la cercó, y construyó contra ella grandes empalizadas.	14 There was once a smal town, with only a few inhabitants; a mighty king made war on it, laying siege toit and building great siege-works round it.
15 Allí se encontraba un hombre pobre pero sabio, que salvó la ciudad con su sabiduría. A pesar de eso, nadie se acordó más de ese pobre hombre.	15 But there was in that town a poverty-stricken sage who by his wisdom saved the town. No oneremembered this poor man afterwards.
16 Entonces pensé: «Más vale maña que fuerza». pero la sabiduría del pobre es despreciada y nadie escucha sus palabras.	16 So I say: Wisdom is more effective than brute force, but the wisdom of a poor man is not valued: noone listens to what he has to say.
17 Las palabras de los sabios oídas con calma valen más que los gritos del que gobierna a los necios.	17 The calm words of the wise make themselves heard above the shouts of someone commanding anarmy of fools.
18 Vale más la sabiduría que las máquinas de guerra, pero una sola falla malogra mucho bien.	18 Wisdom is worth more than weapons of war, but a single sin undoes a deal of good.
