EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS	NEW JERUSALEM
1 El rey se estremeció, subió a la habitación que estaba arriba de la Puerta y se puso a llorar. Y mientras iba subiendo, decía: «¡Hijo mío, Absalón, hijo mío! ¡Hijo mío, Absalón! ¡Ah, si hubiera muerto yo en lugar de ti, Absalón, hijo mío!».	1 The king shuddered. He went up to the room over the gate and burst into tears; and, as he wept, hekept saying, 'Oh, my son Absalom! My son! My son Absalom! If only I had died instead of you! Oh, Absalom myson, my son!'
2 Entonces avisaron a Joab: «El rey llora y se lamenta por Absalón».	2 Word was brought to Joab, 'The king is weeping and mourning for Absalom.'
3 La victoria, en aquel día, se convirtió en duelo para todo el pueblo, porque todos habían oído que el rey estaba muy afligido a causa de su hijo.	3 And for the entire army that day, victory was turned to mourning, the troops having learnt that the kingwas grieving for his son.
4 Aquel día, el ejército entró furtivamente en la ciudad, como lo hubiera hecho un ejército avergonzado por haber huido del combate.	4 And that day the troops came furtively back into town, like troops creeping shamefacedly away whendeserting in battle.
5 Mientras tanto, el rey se había cubierto el rostro y gritaba: «¡Absalón, hijo mío! ¡Absalón, hijo mío, hijo mío!».	5 The king had covered his face and kept crying aloud, 'My son Absalom! Oh, Absalom my son, myson!'
6 Joab fue adentro a ver al rey y le dijo: «¡Hoy has cubierto de oprobio el rostro de tus servidores, esos que hoy han salvado tu vida y la vida de tus hijos y tus hijas, de tus mujeres y concubinas!	6 Joab went inside to the king and said, 'Today you have made al your servants feel ashamed-today,when they have saved your life, the lives of your sons and daughters, the lives of your wives and the lives ofyour concubines!-because you love those who hate you and hate those who love you.
7 Porque tú amas a los que te odian y odias a los que te aman. ¡Sí, hoy has puesto de manifiesto que para ti no valen nada ni los jefes ni los soldados! Seguro que si hoy Absalón estuviera vivo, y todos nosotros muertos, a ti te parecería una cosa justa.	7 Today you have made it plain that commanders and soldiers mean nothing to you -- for today I cansee that you would be content if we were all dead, provided that Absalom was alive!
8 Ahora levántate y ve a dar una palabra de aliento a tus servidores. Porque si no sales ¡juro por el Señor que esta noche no quedará nadie contigo! Y esa sí que será para ti una desgracia peor que todas las que has soportado desde tu juventud hasta ahora».	8 Now get up, come out and reassure your soldiers; for if you do not come out, I swear by Yahweh, notone man wil stay with you tonight; and this will be a worse misfortune for you than anything that has happenedto you from your youth until now!'
9 Entonces el rey se levantó y fue a sentarse a la Puerta. Y cuando hicieron correr la noticia: «¡El rey está sentado a la Puerta!», todo el pueblo acudió a presentarse ante el rey.	9 The king got up and took his seat at the gate. An announcement was made to the whole army: 'Theking is sitting at the gate.' And the whole army assembled in front of the king.
10 Y en todas las tribus de Israel había discusiones entre el pueblo: «El rey, decían, nos libró de las manos de nuestros enemigos, nos liberó del poder de los filisteos, ¡y ahora ha tenido que huir del país a causa de Absalón!	10 Israel had fled, dispersing to their homes. Throughout the tribes of Israel al was dissension and people began saying, 'The king, having freed us from the clutches of our enemies, having saved us from theclutches of the Philistines, has himself had to flee the country to escape from Absalom;
11 Pero Absalón, al que habíamos ungido para que fuera nuestro jefe, ha muerto en el combate. ¿Qué esperan entonces para traer de vuelta al rey?».	11 and now Absalom, whom we had anointed to reign over us, has died in battle. Why does no onesuggest that the king should be brought back?'What was being said throughout Israel reached the king.
12 Y lo que se decía en todo Israel llegó a conocimiento del rey. Entonces el rey David mandó decir a los sacerdotes Sadoc y Abiatar: «Hablen en estos términos a los ancianos de Judá: «¿Por qué van a ser ustedes los últimos en hacer que el rey vuelva a su casa?	12 King David then sent word to the priests Zadok and Abiathar, 'Say to the elders of Judah, "Whyshould you be the last to bring the king home?
13 Ustedes son mis hermanos, de mi propia sangre: ¡no pueden ser los últimos en hacer que vuelve el rey!».	13 You are my brothers, you are my own flesh and bone: why should you be the last to bring the kingback?"
14 Y a Amasá le dirán: «¿No eres tú de mi misma sangre? ¡Que Dios me castigue una y otra vez, si tú no ocupas para siempre el lugar de Joab, como jefe de mi ejército!».	14 And say to Amasa, "Are you not my own flesh and bone? May God bring unnameable il s on me andworse il s, too, if you do not become my permanent army commander instead of Joab!" '
15 Así el rey se ganó el corazón de todos los hombres de Judá como el de un solo hombre, y ellos le mandaron decir: «Vuelve, tú y todos tus servidores».	15 Thus he rallied the hearts of the men of Judah to a man and, as a result, they sent word to the king,'Come back, you and al who serve you.'
16 El rey emprendió el camino de regreso y llegó hasta el Jordán. Los de Judá, por su parte, habían ido a Guilgal para recibirlo y ayudarlo a pasar el Jordán.	16 So the king started home and reached the Jordan. Judah, coming to meet the king to escort himacross the Jordan, had arrived at Gilgal.
17 Simei, hijo de Guerá, el benjaminita de Bajurím, se apresuró a descender con los hombres de Judá al encuentro del rey David,	17 Shimei son of Gera, the Benjaminite of Bahurim, hurried down with the men of Judah to meet KingDavid.
18 llevando consigo a mil hombres de Benjamín, Sibá, el servidor de la casa de Saúl, y con él sus quince hijos y sus veinte servidores, bajaron prontamente al Jordán antes que el rey,	18 With him were a thousand men from Benjamin. Ziba, servant of the House of Saul, with his fifteensons and twenty servants, arrived at the Jordan before the king
19 y cruzaron el vado, para hacer pasar a la familia del rey y complacer todos sus deseos. En cuanto a Simei, se arrojó a los pies del rey cuando este iba a cruzar el Jordán,	19 and worked manful y ferrying the king's family across and doing whatever he required. While the kingwas crossing the Jordan, Shimei son of Gera fel at the king's feet
20 y exclamó: «¡Que el rey no me tenga en cuenta la falta! ¡No te acuerdes de la falta que cometió tu servidor, el día en que el rey, mi señor, salía de Jerusalén! ¡No le des importancia,	20 and said to the king, 'I hope my lord does not regard me as guilty of a crime! Forget about the wrongyour servant did on the day my lord the king left Jerusalem. Let my lord not hold my guilt against me.
21 ya que tu servidor reconoce su pecado! Por eso hoy soy el primero de toda la casa de José que ha bajado al encuentro de mi señor, el rey».	21 For your servant is aware of having sinned, and that is why I have come today -- the first member ofthe whole House of Joseph to come down to meet my lord the king.'
22 Entonces intervino Abisai, hijo de Seruiá, y dijo: «¿No va a morir Simei por haber maldecido al ungido del Señor?».	22 At this, Abishai son of Zeruiah spoke up and said, 'Does Shimei not deserve death for having cursedYahweh's anointed?'
23 Pero David replicó: «¿Qué tengo que ver yo con ustedes, hijos de Seruiá, para que hoy se comporten como adversarios míos? Hoy nadie será condenado a muerte en Israel. ¿No estoy acaso ahora seguro de ser el rey de Israel?».	23 To which David replied, 'What concern is my business to you, sons of Zeruiah, that you shouldoppose my wishes today? Could anyone be put to death in Israel today? Today I know for sure that I am king ofIsrael?'
24 Luego el rey dijo a Simei: «Tú no morirás». Y se lo juró.	24 'Your life is spared,' the king said. And the king gave him his oath.
25 También Meribaal, hijo de Saúl, bajó al encuentro del rey. No se había cuidado los pies, ni arreglado el bigote, ni hecho lavar la ropa, desde el día en que el rey partió de Jerusalén hasta que volvió sano y salvo.	25 Meribbaal son of Saul also went down to meet the king. He had not cared for his feet or hands, hehad not trimmed his moustache or washed his clothes from the day of the king's departure til the day of hispeaceful return.
26 Apenas llegó de Jerusalén para recibir al rey, este le dijo: «¿Por qué no has venido conmigo, Meribaal?».	26 When he arrived from Jerusalem to greet the king, the king asked him, 'Why did you not come withme, Meribbaal?'
27 El respondió: «¡Rey, mi señor, he sido traicionado por mi servidor! Porque yo había pensado: «Voy a ensillar el asno para montar en él e irme con el rey», ya que estoy lisiado.	27 'My lord king,' he replied, 'my retainer deceived me. Your servant said to him, "Saddle the donkey forme to ride, so that I can go with the king," your servant being lame.
28 Pero él me calumnió ante mi señor, el rey. Sin embargo, tú eres como un ángel de Dios: trátame entonces como mejor te parezca.	28 He has slandered your servant to my lord the king. My lord the king, however, is like the Angel ofGod, so do as you think right.
29 Porque toda la casa de mi padre no merecía de parte de mi señor, el rey, nada más que la muerte. Y a pesar de todo, tú me has admitido entre tus comensales: ¿qué derecho tengo todavía de reclamar algo al rey?».	29 My father's entire family deserved no better than death from my lord the king, and yet you admittedyour servant to the ranks of those who eat at your table. What right have I to make any further appeal to theking?'
30 El rey le respondió: «¿Para qué vas a añadir nuevas razones? Ya lo he decidido: tú y Sibá se repartirán las tierras».	30 The king said, 'You need say no more. I rule that you and Ziba divide the property between you.'
31 Meribaal dijo al rey: «¡Que él se quede con todo, puesto que mi señor, el rey, ha vuelto a su casa sano y salvo!».	31 'Let him take it al ,' Meribbaal said to the king, 'since my lord the king has come back home in peace!'
32 Barzilai, el de Galaad, había bajado de Roglím y había pasado con el rey el Jordán, para despedirlo junto al río.	32 Barzillai the Gileadite had come down from Rogelim and accompanied the king towards the Jordan,intending to take leave of him at the Jordan.
33 Barzilai era muy anciano, tenía ochenta años, y había abastecido de provisiones al rey durante su permanencia en Majanaim, porque era un hombre de muy buena posición.	33 Barzillai was a man of great age; he was eighty years old. He had kept the king in provisions duringhis stay at Mahanaim, being a very wealthy man.
34 El rey le dijo: «Sigue adelante conmigo, y yo me ocuparé de tu sustento en Jerusalén».	34 'Come with me', the king said to Barzil ai, 'and I will provide for you at my side in Jerusalem.'
35 Pero Barzilai respondió al rey: «¿Cuántos años más voy a tener de vida para que suba contigo a Jerusalén?	35 Barzillai replied to the king, 'How many years have I left to live, for me to go up to Jerusalem with theking?
36 ¡Ya tengo ochenta años! No puedo distinguir lo bueno de lo malo, ni saborear lo que como o lo que bebo, ni oír la voz de los cantores y cantoras. ¿Por qué tu servidor va a ser una carga más para mi señor, el rey?	36 I am now eighty years old; can I tel the good from the bad? Has your servant any taste for his foodand drink? Can I stil hear the voices of men and women singers? Why should your servant be a further burdento my lord the king?
37 Tu servidor te acompañará un corto trecho más allá del Jordán. ¿Para qué me vas a conceder semejante recompensa?	37 Your servant will go a little way across the Jordan with the king; but why should the king reward meso generously for that?
38 Te ruego que me dejes volver, y así moriré en mi ciudad junto a la tumba de mi padre y de mi madre. Ahí tienes a tu servidor Quimham: que él siga adelante con mi señor, el rey, trátalo como mejor te parezca».	38 Please allow your servant to go home again, so that I can die in my own town near the grave of myfather and mother. But here is your servant Chimham; let him go with my lord the king; treat him as you thinkright.'
39 El rey dijo entonces: «Que Quimham siga adelante conmigo; yo lo trataré como mejor te parezca y haré por ti todo lo que quieras pedirme».	39 The king said, 'Let Chimham come along with me then; I shall do whatever you wish for him, andanything you request I shal do for your sake.'
40 Todo el pueblo pasó el Jordán, y también paso el rey. Luego el rey besó a Barzilai y lo bendijo, y él regresó a su casa.	40 The people then al crossed the Jordan, and the king, having crossed, kissed Barzil ai and blessedhim, and the latter went home.
41 El rey avanzó hasta Guilgal, y Quimham iba con él. Todo el pueblo de Judá acompañaba al rey, y también la mitad del pueblo de Israel.	41 The king went on to Gilgal and Chimham went with him. Al the people of Judah accompanied theking, and also half the people of Israel.
42 Entonces todos los hombres de Israel se presentaron al rey y le dijeron: «¿Por qué te tienen acaparado nuestros hermanos, los hombres de Judá, y han sido ellos los que hicieron cruzar el Jordán al rey, a su familia y a todos los hombres que estaban con David?».	42 Al the men of Israel then came to the king. 'Why', they asked the king, 'have our brothers, the men ofJudah, carried you off and brought the king and his family across the Jordan, and al David's men with him?'
43 Los hombres de Judá respondieron a los de Israel: «Es porque el rey está más cerca de nosotros. ¿Por qué se van a irritar a causa de esto? ¿Acaso hemos comido a costa del rey o él nos ha concedido algún privilegio?».	43 Al the men of Judah retorted to the men of Israel, 'Because the king is more closely related to us.Why do you take offence at this? Have we been eating at the king's expense? Have we taken any position forourselves?'
44 Pero los hombres de Israel replicaron a los de Judá: «Nosotros tenemos sobre el rey, incluso sobre David, diez veces más derechos que ustedes. ¿Por qué nos han relegado? ¿No fuimos nosotros los primeros en proponer que volviera nuestro rey?». A esto respondieron los hombres de Judá con palabras aún más duras.	44 The men of Israel replied to the men of Judah, 'We have ten shares in the king and, what is more, weare your elder brothers, so why have you slighted us? Were we not the first to suggest bringing back our king?'The men of Judah's words were even more intemperate than those of the men of Israel.
