BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Igualmente, vosotras, mujeres, sed sumisas a vuestros maridos para que, si incluso algunos no creen en la Palabra, sean ganados no por las palabras sino por la conducta de sus mujeres,	1 In the same way, you wives should be obedient to your husbands. Then if there are some husbandswho do not believe the Word, they may find themselves won over, without a word spoken, by the way their wivesbehave,
2 al considerar vuestra conducta casta y respetuosa.	2 when they see the reverence and purity of your way of life.
3 Que vuestro adorno no esté en el exterior, en peinados, joyas y modas,	3 Your adornment should be not an exterior one, consisting of braided hair or gold jewellery or fineclothing,
4 sino en lo oculto del corazón, en la incorruptibilidad de un alma dulce y serena: esto es precioso ante Dios.	4 but the interior disposition of the heart, consisting in the imperishable quality of a gentle and peacefulspirit, so precious in the sight of God.
5 Así se adornaban en otro tiempo las santas mujeres que esperaban en Dios, siendo sumisas a sus maridos;	5 That was how the holy women of the past dressed themselves attractively -- they hoped in God andwere submissive to their husbands;
6 así obedeció Sara a Abraham, llamándole Señor. De ella os hacéis hijas cuando obráis bien, sin tener ningún temor.	6 like Sarah, who was obedient to Abraham, and cal ed him her lord. You are now her children, as longas you live good lives free from fear and worry.
7 De igual manera vosotros, maridos, en la vida común sed comprensivos con la mujer que es un ser más frágil, tributándoles honor como coherederas que son también de la gracia de Vida, para que vuestras oraciones no encuentren obstáculo.	7 In the same way, husbands must always treat their wives with consideration in their life together,respecting a woman as one who, though she may be the weaker partner, is equal y an heir to the generous giftof life. This wil prevent anything from coming in the way of your prayers.
8 En conclusión, tened todos unos mismos sentimientos, sed compasivos, amaos como hermanos, sed misericordiosos y humildes.	8 Final y: you should al agree among yourselves and be sympathetic; love the brothers, havecompassion and be self-effacing.
9 No devolváis mal por mal, ni insulto por insulto; por el contrario, bendecid, pues habéis sido llamados a heredar la bendición.	9 Never repay one wrong with another, or one abusive word with another; instead, repay with a blessing.That is what you are cal ed to do, so that you inherit a blessing.
10 Pues quien quiera amar la vida y ver días felices, guarde su lengua del mal, y sus labios de palabras engañosas,	10 For Who among you delights in life, longs for time to enjoy prosperity? Guard your tongue from evil,your lips from any breath of deceit.
11 apártese del mal y haga el bien, busque la paz y corra tras ella.	11 Turn away from evil and do good, seek peace and pursue it.
12 Pues los ojos del Señor miran a los justos y sus oídos escuchan su oración, pero el rostro del Señor contra los que obran el mal.	12 For the eyes of the Lord are on the upright, his ear turned to their cry. But the Lord's face is setagainst those who do evil.
13 Y ¿quién os hará mal si os afanáis por el bien?	13 No one can hurt you if you are determined to do only what is right;
14 Mas, aunque sufrierais a causa de la justicia, dichosos de vosotros. No les tengáis ningún miedo ni os turbeis.	14 and blessed are you if you have to suffer for being upright. Have no dread of them; have no fear.
15 Al contrario, dad culto al Señor, Cristo, en vuestros corazones, siempre dispuestos a dar respuesta a todo el que os pida razón de vuestra esperanza.	15 Simply proclaim the Lord Christ holy in your hearts, and always have your answer ready for peoplewho ask you the reason for the hope that you have.
16 Pero hacedlo con dulzura y respeto. Mantened una buena conciencia, para que aquello mismo que os echen en cara, sirva de confusión a quienes critiquen vuestra buena conducta en Cristo.	16 But give it with courtesy and respect and with a clear conscience, so that those who slander your goodbehaviour in Christ may be ashamed of their accusations.
17 Pues más vale padecer por obrar el bien, si esa es la voluntad de Dios, que por obrar el mal.	17 And if it is the wil of God that you should suffer, it is better to suffer for doing right than for doingwrong.
18 Pues también Cristo, para llevarnos a Dios, murió una sola vez por los pecados, el justo por los injustos, muerto en la carne, vivificado en el espíritu.	18 Christ himself died once and for al for sins, the upright for the sake of the guilty, to lead us to God. Inthe body he was put to death, in the spirit he was raised to life,
19 En el espíritu fue también a predicar a los espíritus encarcelados,	19 and, in the spirit, he went to preach to the spirits in prison.
20 en otro tiempo incrédulos, cuando les esperaba la paciencia de Dios, en los días en que Noé construía el Arca, en la que unos pocos, es decir ocho personas, fueron salvados a través del agua;	20 They refused to believe long ago, while God patiently waited to receive them, in Noah's time when theark was being built. In it only a few, that is eight souls, were saved through water.
21 a ésta corresponde ahora el bautismo que os salva y que no consiste en quitar la suciedad del cuerpo, sino en pedir a Dios una buena conciencia por medio de la Resurrección de Jesucristo,	21 It is the baptism corresponding to this water which saves you now -- not the washing off of physical dirtbut the pledge of a good conscience given to God through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,
22 que, habiendo ido al cielo, está a la diestra de Dios, y le están sometidos los Angeles, las Dominaciones y las Potestades.	22 who has entered heaven and is at God's right hand, with angels, ruling forces and powers subject tohim.
