Jeremías 38

BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Oyeron Sefatías, hijo de Mattán, Guedalías, hijo de Pasjur, hijo de Malkiyías, las palabras que Jeremías hablaba a todo el pueblo:	1 But Shephatiah son of Mattan, Gedaliah son of Pashhur, Jucal son of Shelemiah and Pashhur son ofMalchiah heard the words which Jeremiah was saying to al the people,
2 «Así dice Yahveh: Quien se quede en esta ciudad, morirá de espada, de hambre y de peste, mas el que se entregue a los caldeos vivirá, y eso saldrá ganando.	2 'Yahweh says this, "Anyone who stays in this city wil die by sword, famine or plague; but anyone wholeaves it and surrenders to the Chaldaeans wil live; he wil escape with his life.
3 Así dice Yahveh: Sin remisión será entregada esta ciudad en mano de las tropas del rey de Babilonia, que la tomará».	3 Yahweh says this: This city will certainly be handed over to the army of the king of Babylon, and he willcapture it." '
4 Y dijeron aquellos jefes al rey: «Ea, hágase morir a ese hombre, porque con eso desmoraliza a los guerreros que quedan en esta ciudad y a toda la plebe, diciéndoles tales cosas. Porque este hombre no procura en absoluto el bien del pueblo, sino su daño».	4 The chief men then said to the king, 'You must have this man put to death: he is unquestionablydisheartening the remaining soldiers in the city, and al the people too, by talking like this. This man is seekingnot the welfare of the people but their ruin.'
5 Dijo el rey Sedecías: «Ahí le tenéis en vuestras manos, pues nada podría el rey contra vosotros».	5 King Zedekiah answered, 'He is in your hands as you know, for the king is powerless to oppose you.'
6 Ellos se apoderaron de Jeremías, y lo echaron a la cisterna de Malkiyías, hijo del rey, que había en el patio de la guardia, descolgando a Jeremías con sogas. En el pozo no había agua, sino fango, y Jeremías se hundió en el fango.	6 So they took Jeremiah and put him into the storage-wel of the king's son Malchiah in the Court of theGuard, letting him down with ropes. There was no water in the storage-well, only mud, and into the mudJeremiah sank.
7 Pero Ebed Mélek el kusita - un eunuco de la casa del rey - oyó que habían metido a Jeremías en la cisterna. El rey estaba sentado en la puerta de Benjamín.	7 But Ebed-Melech the Cushite, a eunuch attached to the palace, heard that Jeremiah had been put intothe storage-wel . As the king was sitting in the Benjamin Gate,
8 Salió Ebed Mélek de la casa del rey, y habló al rey en estos términos:	8 Ebed-Melech came out from the palace and spoke to the king.
9 «Oh mi señor el rey, está mal hecho todo cuanto esos hombres han hecho con el profeta Jeremías, arrojándole a la cisterna. Total lo mismo se iba a morir de hambre, pues no quedan ya víveres en la ciudad».	9 'My lord king,' he said, 'these men have done a wicked thing by treating the prophet Jeremiah like this:they have thrown him into the storage-well. He will starve to death there, since there is no more food in the city.'
10 Entonces ordenó el rey a Ebed Mélek el kusita: «Toma tú mismo de aquí treinta hombres, y subes al profeta Jeremías del pozo antes de que muera».	10 At this the king gave Ebed-Melech the Cushite the fol owing order: 'Take thirty men with you from hereand pul the prophet Jeremiah out of the storage-wel before he dies.'
11 Ebed Mélek tomó consigo a los hombres y entrando en la casa del rey, al vestuario del tesoro, tomó allí deshechos de paños y telas, y con sogas los descolgó por la cisterna hasta Jeremías.	11 Ebed-Melech took the men with him and went into the palace to the Treasury wardrobe; out of it hetook some torn, worn-out rags which he lowered on ropes to Jeremiah in the storage-wel .
12 Dijo Ebed Mélek el kusita a Jeremías: «Hala, ponte los deshechos de paños y telas entre los sobacos y las sogas». Así lo hizo Jeremías,	12 Ebed-Melech the Cushite then said to Jeremiah, 'These torn, worn-out rags are for you to put underyour armpits to pad the ropes.' Jeremiah did this.
13 y halando a Jeremías con las sogas le subieron de la cisterna. Y Jeremías se quedó en el patio de la guardia.	13 Then they hauled Jeremiah up with the ropes and pulled him out of the storage-wel . And Jeremiahstayed in the Court of the Guard.
14 Entonces el rey Sedecías mandó traer al profeta Jeremías a la entrada tercera que había en la Casa de Yahveh, y dijo el rey a Jeremías: «Yo te pregunto una cosa: no me ocultes nada».	14 King Zedekiah had the prophet Jeremiah summoned to him at the third entrance to the Temple ofYahweh. 'I want to ask you for a word,' the king said to Jeremiah, 'keep nothing back from me.'
15 Dijo Jeremías a Sedecías: «Si te soy sincero, seguro que me matarás; y aunque te aconseje, no me escucharás».	15 Jeremiah answered Zedekiah, 'If I do proclaim it to you, are you not sure to have me put to death?And if I give you advice, you wil not listen to me.'
16 El rey Sedecías juró a Jeremías en secreto: «Por vida de Yahveh, y por la vida que nos ha dado, que no te haré morir ni te entregaré en manos de estos hombres que andan buscando tu muerte».	16 King Zedekiah then secretly swore this oath to Jeremiah, 'As Yahweh lives, giver of this life of ours, Iwil have you neither put to death nor handed over to these men who are determined to kill you.'
17 Dijo Jeremías a Sedecías: «Así dice Yahveh, el Dios Sebaot, el Dios de Israel: Si sales a entregarte a los jefes del rey de Babilonia, vivirás tú mismo y esta ciudad no será incendiada: tanto tú como los tuyos viviréis.	17 Jeremiah then said to Zedekiah, 'Yahweh, God Sabaoth, God of Israel, says this, "If you go out andsurrender to the king of Babylon's generals, your life will be safe and this city will not be burnt down; you andyour family wil survive.
18 Pero si no te entregas a los jefes del rey de Babilonia, esta ciudad será puesta en manos de los caldeos e incendiada, y tú no escaparás de sus manos».	18 But if you do not go out and surrender to the king of Babylon's generals, this city wil be handed overto the Chaldaeans and they wil burn it down; nor wil you yourself escape their clutches." '
19 Dijo el rey Sedecías a Jeremías: «Me preocupan los judíos que se han pasado a los caldeos, no vaya a ser que me entreguen en sus manos, y éstos hagan mofa de mí».	19 King Zedekiah then said to Jeremiah, 'I am afraid of the Judaeans who have already gone over to theChaldaeans: I might be handed over to them and they would il -treat me.'
20 Pero replicó Jeremías: «No te entregarán. ¡Ea!, oye la voz de Yahveh en esto que te digo, que te resultará bien y quedarás con vida.	20 'You wil not be handed over to them,' Jeremiah replied. 'Please listen to Yahweh's voice as I haverelayed it to you, and then al wil go wel with you and your life wil be safe.
21 Mas si rehúsas a salir, esto es lo que me ha mostrado Yahveh.	21 But if you refuse to surrender, this is what Yahweh has shown me:
22 Mira que todas las mujeres que han permanecido en la casa del rey de Judá serán sacadas adonde los jefes del rey de Babilonia, e irán diciendo: Te empujaron y pudieron contigo aquellos con quienes te saludabas. Se hundieron en el lodo tus pies, hiciéronse atrás.	22 the sight of al the women left in the king of Judah's palace being led off to the king of Babylon'sgenerals and saying: "They have misled you, they have triumphed over you, those friends of yours! Your feethave sunk in the mud! They are up and away!"
23 Y a todas tus mujeres y tus hijos irán sacando adonde los caldeos, y tú no escaparás de ellos, sino que en manos del rey de Babilonia serás puesto, y esta ciudad será incendiada».	23 'Yes, al your wives and children wil be led off to the Chaldaeans, and you yourself wil not escapetheir clutches but wil be a prisoner in the clutches of the king of Babylon. And as for this city, it wil be burntdown.'
24 Entonces dijo Sedecías a Jeremías: «Que nadie sepa nada de esto, y no morirás.	24 Zedekiah then said to Jeremiah, 'Do not let anyone else hear these words or you wil die.
25 Aunque se enteren los jefes de que he estado hablando contigo, y viniendo a ti te digan: “Decláranos qué has dicho al rey sin ocultárnoslo, y así no te mataremos, como también lo que el rey te ha hablado”,	25 If the chief men hear that I have been talking to you, and come and say, "Tel us what you said to theking and what the king said to you; keep nothing back from us, or we shal put you to death,"
26 tú les dirás: “He pedido al rey la gracia de que no se me devuelva a casa de Jonatán a morirme allí.”»	26 you must reply, "I presented this request to the king: that he would not have me sent back toJonathan's house to die." '
27 En efecto, vinieron todos los jefes a Jeremías, le interrogaron, y él les respondió conforme a lo que queda dicho que le había mandado el rey: y ellos quedaron satisfechos, porque nada se sabía de lo hablado.	27 And in fact al the chief men came to Jeremiah and questioned him. He told them exactly what theking had ordered him to say. They then left him in peace, since the conversation had not been overheard.
28 Así quedó Jeremías en el patio de la guardia, hasta el día en que fue tomada Jerusalén. Ahora bien, cuando fue tomada Jerusalén...	28 And Jeremiah stayed in the Court of the Guard until the day Jerusalem was captured. And he wasthere when Jerusalem actual y was captured.
