1 (In quel tempo) approssimandosi il giorno della festa delle azime, ch' è detto pasca,	1 The feast of Unleavened Bread, cal ed the Passover, was now drawing near,
2 cercavano gli principi e gli sacerdoti e li Scribi, come potessero uccidere Iesù; ma temevano il popolo.	2 and the chief priests and the scribes were looking for some way of doing away with him, because theywere afraid of the people.
3 Entrò satana in Iuda Scariote, uno de' dodici.	3 Then Satan entered into Judas, surnamed Iscariot, who was one of the Twelve.
4 E andò, e parlò alli principi delli sacerdoti, e con gli savii del popolo, in che modo a loro tradirebbe Iesù.	4 He approached the chief priests and the officers of the guard to discuss some way of handing Jesusover to them.
5 Molto rallegroronsi di ciò; e fecero mercato con lui di dargli pecunia.	5 They were delighted and agreed to give him money.
6 Ed egli gli promise (allora di tradirlo). E cercava in che modo il potesse tradire senza le turbe.	6 He accepted and began to look for an opportunity to betray him to them without people knowing aboutit.
7 Ma veniva il dì della pasca, nel quale era necessario di uccidere l'agnello pasquale.	7 The day of Unleavened Bread came round, on which the Passover had to be sacrificed,
8 E Iesù mandò Pietro e Ioanne, e disse a loro: andate, e apparecchiate l'agnello pasquale, acciò che noi mangiamo.	8 and he sent Peter and John, saying, 'Go and make the preparations for us to eat the Passover.'
9 E quelli dissero: dove vogli che noi apparecchiamo?	9 They asked him, 'Where do you want us to prepare it?'
10 Ed egli disse a loro: voi entrarete nella città, e trovarete uno uomo che porta uno vaso di acqua; seguitatelo insino in quella casa dove egli entra.	10 He said to them, 'Look, as you go into the city you wil meet a man carrying a pitcher of water. Fol owhim into the house he enters
11 E direte al padre della famiglia della casa: il maestro dice: dove è il luogo atto a mangiare la pasca con gli discepoli miei?	11 and tel the owner of the house, "The Master says this to you: Where is the room for me to eat thePassover with my disciples?"
12 Ed egli vi mostrarà uno cenacolo grande molto atto; e voi quivi apparecchiate.	12 The man wil show you a large upper room furnished with couches. Make the preparations there.'
13 E gli discepoli andorono, e ritrovorono sì come egli disse a loro, e apparecchiorono la pasca.	13 They set off and found everything as he had told them and prepared the Passover.
14 E quando fu l'ora (del mangiare), posesi Iesù a sedere (e a mangiare) coi dodici suoi discepoli.	14 When the time came he took his place at table, and the apostles with him.
15 E disse a loro: con desiderio ho desiderato di mangiare questa pasca con voi, inanzi ch' io patisca (passione).	15 And he said to them, 'I have ardently longed to eat this Passover with you before I suffer;
16 Ma io vi dico che da questo giorno inanzi io non mangerò più di questo cibo, insino che sia empiuto il regno di Dio.	16 because, I tel you, I shal not eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.'
17 E prese il calice, e rendette le grazie, e disse: pigliate, e partite infra voi.	17 Then, taking a cup, he gave thanks and said, 'Take this and share it among you,
18 E dicovi ch' io non beverò di questa generazione di vite insino che venga il regno di Dio.	18 because from now on, I tel you, I shall never again drink wine until the kingdom of God comes.'
19 E prese il pane, e rendette le grazie, [e ruppelo] e diettelo a loro, dicendo: questo è il corpo mio il quale per voi darassi; questo fate in mia commemorazione.	19 Then he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, 'This ismy body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.'
20 Simigliantemente, dopo ch' ebbe cenato, prese il calice, e disse: questo è il calice del nuovo testamento nel mio sangue, il quale si spargerà per voi (e per molti).	20 He did the same with the cup after supper, and said, 'This cup is the new covenant in my bloodpoured out for you.
21 Ma la mano di colui che mi tradirà è meco a mensa.	21 'But look, here with me on the table is the hand of the man who is betraying me.
22 Ma il Figliuolo dell' uomo va, secondo ch' è definito (di lui); ma guai a quello uomo, per il quale io sarò tradito!	22 The Son of man is indeed on the path which was decreed, but alas for that man by whom he isbetrayed!'
23 Allora egli cominciorono a dimandare, qual fusse quello infra loro.	23 And they began to ask one another which of them it could be who was to do this.
24 E (incontinente) cominciorono a contendere insieme, quale di loro dovesse essere il maggiore.	24 An argument also began between them about who should be reckoned the greatest;
25 Disse a loro Iesù i re delle genti signoreggiano li loro uomini; e chi ha potestà sopra di loro, sono chiamati benefici.	25 but he said to them, 'Among the gentiles it is the kings who lord it over them, and those who haveauthority over them are given the title Benefactor.
26 Ma non è così di voi; il maggiore sarà minore, e servitore.	26 With you this must not happen. No; the greatest among you must behave as if he were the youngest,the leader as if he were the one who serves.
27 Non è maggiore quello che mangia, che quel che serve? Sì bene, ch' egli è maggiore. Io sono in mezzo di voi, come quello che serve (a chi mangia).	27 For who is the greater: the one at table or the one who serves? The one at table, surely? Yet here amI among you as one who serves!
28 Perchè voi sete coloro che avete perseverato meco nelle mie tentazioni.	28 'You are the men who have stood by me faithful y in my trials;
29 Io vi dispongo il (mio) regno, come il Padre mio l' ha disposto a me,	29 and now I confer a kingdom on you, just as my Father conferred one on me:
30 acciò che mangiate e beviate alla mensa mia nel regno mio, e sediate sopra li troni a giudicare le dodici tribù d' Israel.	30 you wil eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and you wil sit on thrones to judge the twelve tribesof Israel.
31 E poi disse Iesù (a Simon Pietro): Simone, ecco che satana [vi] ha cercato per vagliarvi come si vaglia il grano.	31 'Simon, Simon! Look, Satan has got his wish to sift you al like wheat;
32 Ma io ho pregato per te, acciò che la tua fede non venga meno; e tu, quando sarai ritornato, conforta gli fratelli tuoi.	32 but I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail, and once you have recovered, you inyour turn must strengthen your brothers.'
33 Ed egli rispose, e disse: Signore, disposto sono di venire con teco in pregione e in morte.	33 'Lord,' he answered, 'I would be ready to go to prison with you, and to death.'
34 E Iesù gli disse: e io ti dico, Pietro; inanzi che il gallo canti, tre volte tu mi negherai, e dirai che non mi conosci. E poi disse a loro Iesù:	34 Jesus replied, 'I tell you, Peter, by the time the cock crows today you wil have denied three times thatyou know me.'
35 Quando vi mandai senza sacco e senza tasca, mancovvi mai nulla?	35 He said to them, 'When I sent you out without purse or haversack or sandals, were you short ofanything?'
36 Ed egli dissero: Signore, no. E Iesù disse a loro e io ora vi dico, che quel che ha il sacco, toglia anche la tasca; e quel che non ha coltello, venda la tonica sua, e comprine uno.	36 'No, nothing,' they said. He said to them, 'But now if you have a purse, take it, and the same with ahaversack; if you have no sword, sell your cloak and buy one,
37 Imperò ch' egli è di bisogno, che s' adempia in me quello ch' è scritto: e con gl' ingiusti è deputato. E tutte quelle cose, che sono dette di me, hanno fine.	37 because I tell you these words of scripture are destined to be fulfil ed in me: He was counted as oneof the rebel ious. Yes, what it says about me is even now reaching its fulfilment.'
38 Ed egli dissero: Signore, quivi è due coltelli. Ed egli disse: basta.	38 They said, 'Lord, here are two swords.' He said to them, 'That is enough!'
39 E uscì fuori, e andò secondo l'usanza sua in sul monte Oliveto; e gli discepoli seguitoronlo.	39 He then left to make his way as usual to the Mount of Olives, with the disciples fol owing.
40 E giunti che furono al luogo, disse Iesù a loro: orate, acciò che voi non entrate in tentazione.	40 When he reached the place he said to them, 'Pray not to be put to the test.'
41 E partissi da loro quanto fusse uno gittare di pietra; e inginocchiossi,	41 Then he withdrew from them, about a stone's throw away, and knelt down and prayed.
42 e diceva: padre, se tu vogli, leva questo calice da me; niente di meno, non secondo la mia volontà sia fatto, ma secondo la tua.	42 'Father,' he said, 'if you are wil ing, take this cup away from me. Nevertheless, let your will be done,not mine.'
43 Allora gli apparve l'angelo dal cielo, e confortavalo. E fatto è in agonia, e più lungamente orava.	43 Then an angel appeared to him, coming from heaven to give him strength.
44 E il sudore suo venne come sangue, il quale discorreva per terra.	44 In his anguish he prayed even more earnestly, and his sweat fell to the ground like great drops ofblood.
45 Levossi dalla orazione, e tornò alli discepoli suoi; e trovogli dormire per tristizia.	45 When he rose from prayer he went to the disciples and found them sleeping for sheer grief.
46 E disse a loro: perchè dormite voi? Levatevi e orate, acciò che non entrate in tentazione.	46 And he said to them, 'Why are you asleep? Get up and pray not to be put to the test.'
47 E così parlando Iesù, venne la turba, e Iuda, uno de' dodici; ed era dinanzi, e accostossi a Iesù, e basciollo.	47 Suddenly, while he was still speaking, a number of men appeared, and at the head of them the mancal ed Judas, one of the Twelve, who went up to Jesus to kiss him.
48 E Iesù gli disse: o Iuda, tu tradisci il Figliuolo dell' uomo con il bacio?	48 Jesus said, 'Judas, are you betraying the Son of man with a kiss?'
49 E vedendo quelli, che gli erano dintorno, quello poteva essere, dissero a Iesù: Signore, percotiamo noi loro col coltello?	49 His followers, seeing what was about to happen, said, 'Lord, shal we use our swords?'
50 E in questo, uno di loro ferì il servo del principe de' sacerdoti; e taglio'li l'orecchia diritta.	50 And one of them struck the high priest's servant and cut off his right ear.
51 Allora Iesù disse a loro: lasciate fare insino a qui. E toccò l'orecchia, e sanollo.	51 But at this Jesus said, 'That is enough.' And touching the man's ear he healed him.
52 E poi disse Iesù a coloro ch' erano venuti (per pigliarlo), principi de' sacerdoti e maestri del tempio e antichi: come a latrone siete venuti colle coltella e con gli bastoni (per pigliarmi)?	52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests and captains of the Temple guard and elders who had come forhim, 'Am I a bandit, that you had to set out with swords and clubs?
53 Or non sono io stato con voi ogni giorno nel tempio ammaestrandovi, e non mi pigliaste? Ma questa è l'ora vostra, e la signoria delle tenebre.	53 When I was among you in the Temple day after day you never made a move to lay hands on me. Butthis is your hour; this is the reign of darkness.'
54 E (mentre che Iesù diceva queste parole) il preseno, e menoronlo a casa del principe de' sacerdoti; e Pietro seguitavalo da lungi.	54 They seized him then and led him away, and they took him to the high priest's house. Peter fol owedat a distance.
55 Acceseno il fuoco nel mezzo della sala; e Pietro stava in mezzo fra loro, e sedevano intorno. il fuoco.	55 They had lit a fire in the middle of the courtyard and Peter sat down among them,
56 E una ancilla, vedendo Pietro che sedeva, guardandolo disse: e questo era con lui.	56 and as he was sitting there by the blaze a servant-girl saw him, peered at him, and said, 'This manwas with him too.'
57 E Pietro negò Iesù, e disse: femina, io non so ciò che tu dichi.	57 But he denied it. 'Woman, I do not know him,' he said.
58 E poco stando, un altro il vide, e disse: e tu sei di costoro. E Pietro (rispose e) disse: o uomo, non sono.	58 Shortly afterwards someone else saw him and said, 'You are one of them too.' But Peter replied, 'I amnot, my friend.'
59 E stando anche uno poco per spazio di una ora, un altro venne, e affermava e dicea: veramente colui era con quello, imperò ch' egli è Galileo.	59 About an hour later another man insisted, saying, 'This fel ow was certainly with him. Why, he is aGalilean.'
60 E Pietro (rispose e) disse: o uomo, non so quel che tu dici. E così parlando, cantò il gallo.	60 Peter said, 'My friend, I do not know what you are talking about.' At that instant, while he was stilspeaking, the cock crowed,
61 E voltandosi il Signore, riguardò Pietro. E ricordandosi Pietro delle parole che gli avea detto il Signore: inanzi che il gallo canti, tre volte mi negherai,	61 and the Lord turned and looked straight at Peter, and Peter remembered the Lord's words when hehad said to him, 'Before the cock crows today, you will have disowned me three times.'
62 uscì fuori, e pianse amaramente.	62 And he went outside and wept bitterly.
63 E gli uomini, che tenevano Iesù, schernivanlo e battevanlo.	63 Meanwhile the men who guarded Jesus were mocking and beating him.
64 E fasciorongli gli occhi, e davangli nella faccia, e dimandavangli dicendo: (o Cristo), profetizza, chi è colui che ti ha percosso?	64 They blindfolded him and questioned him, saying, 'Prophesy! Who hit you then?'
65 E beffeggiavanlo, e dicevangli molti altri vituperii.	65 And they heaped many other insults on him.
66 E fatto che fu giorno, furono insieme gli vecchi del popolo e gli principi de' sacerdoti e gli Scribi; e menorono Iesù nel loro consiglio, e dicevano: se' tu Cristo? diccelo.	66 When day broke there was a meeting of the elders of the people, the chief priests and scribes. Hewas brought before their council,
67 Ed egli rispose a loro (e disse): io vel dirò, ma voi nol crederete.	67 and they said to him, 'If you are the Christ, tel us.' He replied, 'If I tel you, you wil not believe,
68 E se io vi domandarò, voi non mi risponderete, e non mi lascerete.	68 and if I question you, you will not answer.
69 E con tutto questo il Figliuolo dell' uomo sederà dalla parte diritta della virtù di Dio.	69 But from now on, the Son of man wil be seated at the right hand of the Power of God.'
70 Allora dissero tutti: tu adunque se' Figliuolo di Dio? Lo quale disse: voi il dite, però ch' io sono.	70 They all said, 'So you are the Son of God then?' He answered, 'It is you who say I am.'
71 E quelli dissero perchè cerchiamo noi? non vogliamo oggi mai più testimonii; noi abbiamo udito tanto della sua bocca, che ci basta.	71 Then they said, 'Why do we need any evidence? We have heard it for ourselves from his own lips.'
