1 Nell' anne CLI (del regno de' Greci) si partì di Roma Demetrio, figliuolo di Seleuco, e con poca gente se ne venne nella città marittima, e quivi incominciò a regnare.	1 In the hundred and fifty-first year Demetrius the son of Seleucus departed from the city of Rome, and came up with a few men into a city of the sea coast, and reigned there.
2 E avvenne, che poi ch' egli fu tornato nella casa del regno de' suoi padri (cioè in Antiochia), il suo esèrcito prese lo re Antioco e Lisia, e menavagli presi dinanzi da lui.	2 And it came to pass, as he entered into the house of the kingdom of his fathers, that the army seized upon Antiochus, and Lysias, to bring them unto him.
3 Ma da poi ch' egli il seppe, fece comandare loro, che non gli mostrassono le faccie loro.	3 And when he knew it, he said: Let me not see their face.
4 E allora quelli dell' oste si li uccisono; e così Demetrio rimase (re e signore, stando) sopra la sedia del suo regno.	4 So the army slew them. And Demetrius sat upon the throne of his kingdom:
5 Ora in quel tempo vennero a lui uomini rei e malvagi del popolo d' Israel, e Alcimo fu loro (duttore e loro) guidatore, il quale voleva essere fatto (sommo) sacerdote.	5 And there came to him the wicked and ungodly men of Israel: And Alcimus was at the head of them, who desired to be made high priest.
6 E accusarono il popolo (di Dio) dinanzi dal re, dicendo: Giuda (Maccabeo) e li suoi fratelli hanno (consumati e) diserti i tuoi amici, e noi hanno dispersi delle nostre terre.	6 And they accused the people to the king, saying: Judas and his brethren have destroyed all thy friends, and he hath driven us out of our land.
7 E perciò (signore) mandavi alcuno uomo, di cui tu ti fidi, il quale vi vada, e vegga la distruzione la quale egli hae fatta nelle regioni del re, e come egli hae (empiutati e gravati) li tuoi amici e i loro aiutatori.	7 Now therefore send some man whom thou trustest, and let him go, and see all the havock he hath made amongst us, and in the king's lands: and let him punish all his friends and their helpers.
8 Allora lo re elesse uno delli suoi amici, il quale signoreggiava di là dal fiume grande nello suo reame, e avea nome Bacchide; il quale Bacchide era molto fedele allo re; e mandollo in Giudea,	8 Then the king chose Bacchides, one of his friends that ruled beyond the great river in the kingdom, and was faithful to the king: and he sent him,
9 ...; e ordinoe sacerdote il malvagio Alcimo ( ch' era guidatore delli malvagi uomini del popolo d' Israel), e comandoe che (Bacchide) facesse vendetta de' figliuoli d' Israel.	9 To see the havock that Judas had made: and the wicked Alcimus he made high priest, and commanded him to take revenge upon the children of Israel.
10 E così si levarono, e vennero con grande oste nella terra de' Giudei, e mandarono (dinanzi da loro) ambasciatori, i quali parlarono a Giuda e ai fratelli parole di pace sotto inganno di tradimento.	10 And they arose, and came with a great army into the land of Juda: and they sent messengers, and spoke to Judas and his brethren with peaceable words deceitfully.
11 E non diedono (Giuda e' fratelli) fede alle loro parole; però che si avviddono ch' erano venuti con troppo grande oste.	11 But they gave no heed to their words: for they saw that they were come with a great army.
12 Ma pertanto gli scribi della gente Giudea si radunarono, e vennero ad Alcimo e a Bacchide, a richiedere (e addomandavano ragione e) giustizia.	12 Then there assembled to Alcimus and Bacchides a company of the scribes to require things that are just:
13 E quelli ch' erano più inanzi iufra' figliuoli d' Israel cercavano pace (e addomandavanla per lo popolo).	13 And first the Assideans that were among the children of Israel, and they sought peace of them.
14 E dicevano intra loro; questo è uomo sacerdote del seme di Aaron, egli non c' ingannerà.	14 For they said: One that is a priest of the seed of Aaron is come, he will not deceive us.
15 Ed egli parlò loro pacificamente, e giuroe loro, dicendo: noi non vi faremo male, nè eziandio agli amici vostri.	15 And he spoke to them peaceably: and he swore to them, saying: We will do you no harm nor your friends.
16 E loro credettono a lui; ed egli prese di loro LX uomini, e tutti gli uccise in uno giorno, secondo quella parola la quale è scritta (che dice):	16 And they believed him. And he took threescore of them, and slew them in one day, according to the word that is written:
17 loro sparsono la carne e il sangue de' tuoi santi nel circuito di Ierusalem; e non era chi gli seppellisse.	17 The flesh of thy saints, and the blood of them they have shed round about Jerusalem, and there was none to bury them.
18 E così cadde paura e tremore sopra tutto il popolo, dicendo che in loro non era verità nè giudicio, conciofosse cosa che aveano rotto ogni loro ordinamento e sacramento che fatto aveano.	18 Then fear and trembling fell upon all the people: for they said: There is no truth, nor justice among them: for they have broken the covenant, and the oath which they made.
19 Allora Bacchide mosse il campo di Ierusalem, e puosesi in Betzeca; e mandoe, e prese molti di quelli che s' erano fuggiti; e uccise alquanti uomini del popolo, e gittogli nel grande pozzo.	19 And Bacchides removed the camp from Jerusalem, and pitched in Bethzecha: and he sent, and took many of them that were fled away from him, and some of the people he killed, and threw them into a great pit.
20 E (tutta la contrada lasciò e) commise la regione ad Alcimo, e lasciogli gente in suo aiuto e defensione. E Bacchide si ritornò al re.	20 Then he committed the country to Alcimus, and left with him troops to help him. So Bacchides went away to the king:
21 E Alcimo si sforzava quanto poteva per lo principato del suo sacerdozio.	21 But Alcimus did what he could to maintain his chief priesthood.
22 Radunaronsi con lui tutti quelli che turbavano il popolo, e tennero la terra de' Giudei, e feciono grave male nel popolo di Dio.	22 And they that disturbed the people resorted to him, and they got the land of Juda into their power, and did much hurt in Israel.
23 E quando Giuda ebbe veduto (e sentito) tutti li mali che faceva Alcimo, e quelli ch' erano con lui, incontro alli figliuoli d' Israel, (e tra questa gente erano de' ribellati del popolo d' Israel), i quali facevano peggio che le genti strane,	23 And Judas saw all the evils that Alcimus, and they that were with him, did to the children of Israel, much more than the Gentiles.
24 e uscì fuori per tutti i confini de' Giudei d' attorno, e fece vendetta degli uomini peccatori; e d'allora inanzi si rimasono di correre il paese.	24 And he went out into all the coasts of Juda round about, and took vengeance upon the men that had revolted, and they ceased to go forth any more into the country.
25 Onde veggendo Alcimo che Giuda avea avuto vittoria insieme con quelli ch' erano con lui, e conoscendo che non si poteva riparare incontra di loro, tornò al re, e accusogli di molti peccati.	25 And Alcimus saw that Judas, and they that were with him prevailed: and he knew that he could not stand against them, and he went back to the king, and accused them of many crimes.
26 Il re mandò contro a loro Nicanore, il quale era uno de' più nobili uomini e principi ch' egli avesse, ed era nemico della gente Giudea; e comandogli che distruggesse quel popolo.	26 And the king sent Nicanor one of his principal lords, who was a great enemy to Israel: and he commanded him to destroy the people.
27 Adunque venne Nicanore in Ierusalem con grande oste, e mandò (pregando) a Giuda e a' fratelli parole di pace sotto inganno di tradimento,	27 And Nicanor came to Jerusalem with a great army, and he sent to Judas and to his brethren deceitfully with friendly words,
28 dicendoli: piacciavi che battaglia non sia intra voi e noi; certo io verrò con poca gente, per vedermi insieme con esso voi in pace.	28 Saying: Let there be no fighting between me and you: I will come with a few men to see your faces with peace.
29 E (liberamente) venne a Giuda, e salutaronsi insieme pacificamente; e non di meno li nimici erano apparecchiati a pigliare Giuda.	29 And he came to Judas, and they saluted one another peaceably: and the enemies were prepared to take away Judas by force.
30 Ma Giuda sì s' avvidde, ch' egli falsamente era venuto a lui; dond' egli si partì, e non volse da indi inanzi vedere la faccia sua.	30 And the thing was known to Judas that he was come to him with deceit: and he was much afraid of him, and would not see his face any more.
31 E quando Nicanore vidde che il suo ordinamento era scoperto, uscì alla battaglia contro a Giuda a lato a Cafarsalama.	31 And Nicanor knew that his counsel was discovered: and he went out to fight against Judas near Capharsalama.
32 E caddono di quelli di Nicanore appresso a cinque milia uomini; e gli altri si raccolsono nella cittade di David.	32 And there fell of Nicanor's army almost five thousand men, and they fled into the city of David.
33 Dopo queste cose salie Nicanore nel monte di Sion; e vennergli incontro li sacerdoti del popolo, e salutarolo in pace, e mostrarongli i sacrificii i quali s' offerivano per lo re.	33 And after this Nicanor went up into mount Sion: and some of the priests and the people came out to salute him peaceably, and to shew him the holocausts that were offered for the king.
34 Ed egli se ne fece beffe, e dispregiandoli gli (corruppe e) contaminò; e parlò con superbia,	34 But he mocked them and despised them, and abused them: and he spoke proudly,
35 e con ira e giurando disse: se Giuda e la sua oste non fia renduto nelle mie mani, immantinente ch' io tornerò, arderò io questa casa. E uscis-sene fuori con grande furore.	35 And swore in anger, saying: Unless Judas and his army be delivered into my hands, as soon as ever I return in peace, I will burn this house. And he went out in a great rage.
36 Allora i sacerdoti si tornarono dentro, e istettono dinanzi dalla faccia del tempio, e piangendo dissono:	36 And the priests went in, and stood before the face of the altar and the temple: and weeping, they said:
37 O Signore Iddio, tu eleggesti questa casa a chiamare il santo nome tuo in essa, e acciò ch' ella fusse casa di orazione nel tuo popolo.	37 Thou, O Lord, hast chosen this house for thy name to be called upon therein, that it might be a house of prayer and supplication for thy people.
38 Or fa dunque vendetta di questo popolo e della sua oste, sì che per lo taglio delle spade caggiano; e ricorditi delle loro bestemie, e non permettere che loro durino.	38 Be avenged of this man, and his army, and let them fall by the sword: remember their blasphemies, and suffer them not to continue any longer.
39 E (per tal modo come è detto) si partì Nicanore di Ierusalem, e puose il campo a Beteron; e vennegli incontro (in suo aiuto) l'oste di Siria.	39 Then Nicanor went out from Jerusalem, and encamped near to Bethoron: and an army of Syria joined him.
40 Ma Giuda giunse in Adarsa con tre milia uomini; e orò Giuda, e disse:	40 But Judas pitched in Adarsa with three thousand men: and Judas prayed, and said:
41 O Signore Iddio, il quale mandasti il tuo angelo il quale percosse (e isconfisse) CLXXXV. M di uomini, i quali essendo mandati dallo re Sennacherib, (che) ti aveano biastemmato;	41 O Lord, when they that were sent by king Sennacherib blasphemed thee, an angel went out, and slew of them a hundred and eighty-five thousand:
42 così isconfiggi oggi questa oste nel nostro conspetto, acciò che loro sappiano, e tutti gli altri, ch' egli parloe isconciamente sopra i santi tuoi; e giùdicalo secondo la sua malizia.	42 Even so destroy this army in our sight to day, and let the rest know that he hath spoken ill against thy sanctuary: and judge thou him according to his wickedness.
43 Adunque a' XIII di marzo si fece la battaglia, ove l'oste di Nicanore fue isconfitta, e Nicanore fue il primo morto.	43 And the armies joined battle on the thirteenth day of the month Adar: and the army of Nicanor was defeated, and he himself was first slain in the battle.
44 Onde tutta la sua oste, veggendo Nicanore essere caduto morto, gittarono le loro armi, e fuggirono via.	44 And when his army saw that Nicanor was slain, they threw away their weapons, and fled:
45 E loro gli seguitarono una giornata da Adazer infino a Gazara, sonando loro sempre di dietro le loro trombe, significando la loro isconfitta.	45 And they pursued after them one day's journey from Adazer, even till ye come to Gazara, and they sounded the trumpets after them with signals.
46 Onde (la gente Giudea) uscirono di tutte le castella d' intorno, e perseguitavangli dividendogli in diverse parti; e poi si rivolgevano a ciascuno di loro, e percuotevangli con l'arme (e uccidevangli), onde loro furono tutti morti, si che pure uno non ne iscampoe.	46 And they went forth out of all the towns of Judea round about, and they pushed them with the horns, and they turned again to them, and they were all slain with the sword, and there was not left of them so much as one.
47 E presono tutte le loro ispoglie, ed ebbono grande preda; e poi mozzarono il capo a Nicanore (così morto), e la mano diritta la quale egli avea distesa con superbia, e portaronla seco e appiccaronla dinanzi a Ierusalem.	47 And they took the spoils of them for a booty, and they cut off Nicanor's head, and his right hand, which he had proudly stretched out, and they brought it, and hung it up over against Jerusalem.
48 Onde tutto il popolo si rallegroe, e feciono grande festa in quello dì.	48 And the people rejoiced exceedingly, and they spent that day with great joy.
49 Di che ordinò (Giuda Maccabeo), che ogni anno in cotal dì si facesse festa a dì XIII di marzo (in memoria di tanta vittoria).	49 And he ordained that this day should be kept every year, being the thirteenth of the month of Adar.
50 E si riposò alquanto tempo la terra de' Giudei.	50 And the land of Juda was quiet for a short time.
