BIBBIA VOLGARE	NEW JERUSALEM
1 E Benadad re di Siria congregò tutto il suo esercito, e XXXII re con esso lui, e cavalli e carra; e andato combattea contro a Samaria, e assediolla.	1 Ben-Hadad king of Aram mustered his whole army -- thirty-two kings were with him, and horses andchariots -- and marched on Samaria, to besiege it and take it by assault.
2 E mandò messaggi nella città ad Acab re d' Israel;	2 He sent messengers into the city to Ahab king of Israel to tel him, 'Ben-Hadad says this,
3 e disse: Benadad dice questo: il tuo argento e il tuo oro è mio; e le tue donne e i tuoi figliuoli ottimi sono miei.	3 "Your silver and gold are mine. Your wives and children remain yours." '
4 E respuose il re d' Israel, e disse: signore mio re, sia secondo la parola tua; io sono tuo, e ciò ch' io ho.	4 The king of Israel replied, 'As you command, my lord king. Myself and al I have are yours.'
5 E ritornando i messaggi dissero: questo dice Benadad, il quale ci mandò a te: tu mi darai il tuo argento e il tuo oro, e le tue donne e i tuoi figliuoli.	5 The messengers came again, this time they said, 'Ben-Hadad says this, "I have already sent you anorder to hand over your silver and your gold, your wives and your children;
6 Domane in quest' ora io manderò a te i servi miei, e cercheranno la casa tua e le case de' servi tuoi; e tutto quello che piacerà loro porranno nelle loro mani, e torrannolo.	6 but I swear, this time tomorrow, I shal send my servants to ransack your house and your servants'houses and lay hands on everything that they value and take it away." '
7 E chiamò il re [d' Israel] tutti gli antichi della terra, e disse: attendete, e vedete ch' egli c'insidia; egli ha mandato a me per le donne mie e per li figliuoli miei, per l'ariento e per l' oro; e non ho consentito.	7 The king of Israel summoned al the elders of the country and said, 'You can see clearly how this manintends to ruin us. He has already demanded my wives and my children, although I have not refused him mysilver and gold.'
8 E tutti gli antichi, e tutto il popolo disse a lui; non gl' intendere, e non gli consentire.	8 Al the elders and all the people said, 'Take no notice. Do not consent.'
9 E respuose (Acab) ai messaggi di Benadad: dite al mio signore re: tutte le cose, per le quali tu mandasti a me tuo servo delle prime, farò; ma questo non posso fare.	9 So he gave this answer to Ben-Hadad's messengers, 'Say to my lord the king, "Al you first required ofyour servant I wil do, but this I cannot do." ' And the messengers went back with the answer.
10 Ritornati i messaggi, riportoro l'ambasciata. Il quale gli rimandò, e disse: questo mi facciano gli dii, e questo aggiungano, se la polvere di Samaria basterà alle pugna del popolo il quale mi sèguita.	10 Ben-Hadad then sent him the following message, 'May the gods bring unnameable ills on me andworse il s too, if there is enough dust in Samaria for each of my fol owers to have a handful!'
11 E il re d' Irael rispuose, e dissegli: dicete a lui, che non si glorii cinto (cioè ben che sia potente e fornito di uomini d' arme, per questo aver la vittoria) perchè 'l poteria esser discinto (cioè esser rotto e disfatto).	11 But the king of Israel returned this answer, 'Say: the man who puts on his armour is not the one toboast, but the man who takes it off.'
12 E udito Benadad questa parola, istando egli e gli altri re nelle trabacche, disse a' servi suoi: circondate la terra. E circondaronla.	12 When Ben-Hadad heard this message -- he was under the awnings drinking with the kings -- he gaveorders to his servants, 'Take up position!' And they took up their positions against the city.
13 Ed ecco uno profeta andò ad Acab re d' Israel, e disse: questo dice Iddio: certo, hai tu veduta tutta quanta questa grandissima moltitudine? ecco ch' io la darò oggi nelle tue mani, acciò che tu sappi ch' io sono Signore.	13 A prophet then arrived, looking for Ahab king of Israel. 'Yahweh says this,' he said. ' "You have seenthis huge army? This very day I shal deliver it into your hands, and you will know that I am Yahweh." '
14 E disse Acab: per chi si farà questo? Ed egli rispuose questo dice il Signore: per quelli che sèguitano i prìncipi delle provincie. E disse: chi incomincerà? E quegli disse: tu.	14 'By whose means?' Ahab asked. The prophet replied, 'Yahweh says this, "By means of the guards ofthe district governors." ' 'Who wil co-ordinate the attack?' Ahab asked. 'You will,' the prophet replied.
15 E richiese i fanti de' principi delle provincie, e trovolli CCXXXII; e dopo loro richiese tutto il popolo, i figliuoli d' Israel, sette milia.	15 So Ahab inspected the guards of the district governors: there were two hundred and thirty-two. Afterthese he reviewed the army, all the Israelites: there were seven thousand.
16 E uscirono nel mezzodì. E Benadad ebrio bevea nella sua trabacca, e XXXII re con esso lui, i quali erano venuti in suo aiuto.	16 They made a sortie at midday, when Ben-Hadad was drinking himself senseless under the awnings,he and the thirty-two kings who were al ies.
17 E uscirono i fanti de' principi delle provincie nella prima fronte. E mandò Benadad alcuni; i quali gli nunciarono a lui, dicendo: uomini sono usciti di Samaria.	17 The guards of the district governors led the sortie. A report was made to Ben-Hadad: 'Some menhave come out of Samaria.'
18 Ed egli disse: o vero che vegnano per pace, o vero per combattere, prendetegli vivi.	18 He said, 'If they have come out for peace, take them alive; if they have come out for war, take themalive too.'
19 E uscirono i fanti de' principi delle provincie, e dopo loro tutto l'altro esercito gli seguitava.	19 So they made a sortie from the city, the district governors' guards and behind them the army,
20 Ciascuno ferio quello uomo che venia rincontro a sè; e fuggirono i Sirii, e Israel perseguitò loro. E Benadad re di Siria a cavallo fuggì con li cavalieri.	20 and each struck down his man. Aram took to flight and Israel pursued; Ben-Hadad king of Aramescaped on horseback.
21 E uscito il re d' Israel percosse i cavalli e carra, e percosse Siria di grande piaga.	21 The king of Israel then advanced, capturing horses and chariots and inflicting a great defeat on Aram.
22 E andato il profeta al re d'Israel, disse: va, e confòrtati, e vedi e sappi quello che tu hai a fare; però che l'anno che verrà il re di Siria. ascenderà (a te e) contra te.	22 The prophet then went to the king of Israel and said, 'Now is the time to be resolute and think careful yabout what you should do, for at the turn of the year the king of Aram wil march against you.'
23 E i servi del re di Siria dissero a lui: i loro iddii sono iddii de' monti; però (che) vinsero noi; ma egli è meglio che noi combattiamo contro a loro ne' piani, e vinceremo loro.	23 The servants of the king of Aram said to him, 'Their gods are gods of the mountains; that is why theyhave proved stronger than we are. But if we fight them on level ground, we shal certainly beat them.
24 E tu fai questo: . rimuovi ciascuno re del tuo esercito, e in luogo di loro poni i prìncipi.	24 This is what you must do: remove all these kings from their commands and appoint professionalsoldiers in their place.
25 E rifà il numero de' cavalieri, che morirono de' tuoi, e de' cavalli secondo ch' erano prima, e le carra secondo che tu avevi prima; e combatteremo contro a loro ne' campi, e vederai che noi gli vinceremo. E credette al consiglio loro, e fece così.	25 You, for your part, must recruit an army as large as the one which deserted you, with as many horsesand as many chariots; then if we fight them on level ground, we shal certainly beat them.' He listened to theiradvice and acted accordingly.
26 E passato l'anno, Benadad annumerò i Sirii, e andonne in Afec per combattere contra ad Israel.	26 At the turn of the year, Ben-Hadad mustered the Aramaeans and marched on Aphek to fight Israel.
27 E i figliuoli d' Israel furono numerati, e tolti i cibi se n' andarono incontro a loro, e puosersi a campo contra loro, quasi dui piccolini greggi di capre. Ma i Sirii riempierono la terra.	27 The Israelites were already mobilised and provisioned, and marched out to meet them. Encampedopposite them, the Israelites looked like two herds of goats, whereas the Aramaeans fil ed the countryside.
28 E andò uno uomo di Dio, e disse al re d' Israel: questo dice il Signore: però che i Sirii hanno detto al Signore, che è Iddio de' monti, e non è Iddio delle valli, tutta questa moltitudine io darò nella tua mano, e saprete ch' io sono lo Signore.	28 The man of God then went to the king of Israel and said, 'Yahweh says this, "Since Aram has saidthat Yahweh is a god of the mountains and not a god of the plains, I shall put the whole of this huge army intoyour power, and you will know that I am Yahweh." '
29 E costoro e coloro sette dì, incontro l' uno all' altro, dirizzavano le schiere; e il settimo dì fu fatta la battaglia, e percossero i figliuoli d' Israel dei Sirii cento milia pedoni in uno dì.	29 For seven days they were encamped opposite each other. On the seventh day battle was joined andthe Israelites slaughtered the Aramaeans, a hundred thousand foot soldiers in one day.
30 E quelli che rimasero fuggirono in Afec in la città; e cadde il muro sopra XXVII milia di uomini i quali erano rimasi. E Benadad fuggendo entrò nella città, in una camera la quale era dentro ad un' altra camera.	30 The rest fled to Aphek, into the citadel, but the city walls collapsed on twenty-seven thousand of thesurvivors. Now Ben-Hadad had fled and taken refuge in an inner room inside the citadel.
31 E dissero a lui i servi suoi noi intendiamo che i re d'Israel sono di grande clemenza; onde pognamo le sacca sopra i nostri lombi, e le funi nei capi nostri, e usciamo al re d' Israel; forse ch' egli salverà le nostre anime.	31 'Look,' his servants said to him, 'we have heard that the kings of Israel are faithful and kind kings. Letus put sackcloth round our waists and cords round our heads and go out to the king of Israel; perhaps he wilspare your life.'
32 E cinsero i loro lombi de' sacchi, e puosero le funi nelli loro capi, e vennero al re d' Israel, e dissero a lui il tuo servo Benadad dice: io ti priego che viva l'anima mia. E quegli disse: se l'è vivo, egli è mio fratello.	32 So they wrapped sackcloth round their waists and put cords round their heads and went to the king ofIsrael, and said, 'Your servant Ben-Hadad says, "Spare my life." '
33 Per la qual cosa quelli uomini ricevettero perdono; e con fretta tolsero la parola della bocca sua, e dissero: il tuo fratello Benadad (vive). E disse loro andate, e menatelo a me. E uscito Benadad a lui, levollo nel suo carro.	33 'So he is stil alive?' he replied. 'He is my brother.' The men took this for a good omen and quicklyseized on his words. 'Yes,' they said, 'Ben-Hadad is your brother.' Ahab said, 'Go and fetch him.' Then Ben-Hadad came out to him and Ahab made him get up into his chariot.
34 Lo quale gli disse: le cittadi, le quali il mio padre tolse al tuo, io te le renderò; e fa a te piazze in Damasco, sì come il mio padre fece in Samaria; e io fatto il patto, mi partirò da te. E fecero patto, e lasciollo andare.	34 Ben-Hadad said, 'I shall restore the towns which my father took from your father and you may set upa trading quarter for yourself in Damascus as my father did in Samaria.' 'With a treaty,' Ahab said, 'I shall set youfree.' Granting him a treaty, Ahab let him go.
35 E allotta uno de' figliuoli de' profeti disse al compagno suo secondo la parola di Dio: fèrimi. E quello non volse ferire.	35 At Yahweh's command a member of the brotherhood of prophets said to a companion of his, 'Strikeme,' but the man refused to strike him.
36 Al quale disse: però che non hai voluto fare secondo la voce di Dio, ecco ch' io ti partirò da me, e uccideratti uno leone. E partitosi uno poco da lui, trovò uno leone, e ucciselo.	36 So he said to him, 'Since you have disobeyed Yahweh's order, the very moment you leave me a lionwil kill you.' And no sooner had he left him than he met a lion, which killed him.
37 E trovando uno altro uomo, disse a lui: dammi. Il quale gli diede, e fecegli una ferita.	37 The prophet then went to find another man and said, 'Strike me,' and the man struck him andwounded him.
38 E andossene il profeta, e rincontrossi nel re in via, e mutò (abito, cioè) la bocca e gli occhii, ispargendo sopra la polvere.	38 The prophet then went and stood waiting for the king on the road, disguising himself with a bandageover his eyes.
39 E passando il re, gridò al re, e disse: il servo tuo uscì a combattere appresso; e fuggito uno uomo, uno altro il menò a me, e disse: custodisci questo uomo, e s' egli fuggirà, l' anima tua sarà per la sua, ovvero che tu mi darai uno talento d'argento.	39 As the king passed, he cal ed out to him, 'Your servant was making his way to where the fight wasthickest when someone left the fighting to bring a man to me, and said, "Guard this man; if he is found missing,your life wil pay for his, or else you wil have to pay one talent of silver."
40 E io turbato volgendomi là e qua, subitamente quello uomo non vidi. E il re disse a d'Israel lui: il tuo giudicio è quello che tu promettesti.	40 But your servant was busy with one thing and another, the man disappeared.' The king of Israel said,'That is your sentence then. You have pronounced it yourself.'
41 E quelli incontanente forbio il suo viso della polvere, e conobbe il re d' Israel, che era de' profeti.	41 At this the man quickly pul ed off the bandage over his eyes, and the king of Israel recognised him asone of the prophets.
42 Il quale gli disse: questo dice il Signore : però che tu lasciasti l'uomo degno di morte della tua mano, la tua anima sarà per la sua, e il popolo tuo sarà per lo suo.	42 He said to the king, 'Yahweh says this, "Since you have let the man escape who was under my curseof destruction, your life wil pay for his, your people for his people." '
43 E ritornò il re d' Israel in casa sua, dispregiando d' intendere, e andossene furioso in Samaria.	43 And the king of Israel went home, gloomy and out of temper, back to Samaria.
