1 Ed essendo passati per Anfipoli e per Apollonia, arrivarono a Tessalonica, ov'era una sinagoga di Giudei.	1 Passing through Amphipolis and Apol onia, they eventual y reached Thessalonica, where there was aJewish synagogue.
2 E Paolo, secondo il suo solito, andò da loro, e per tre sabati disputò con loro sulle Scritture,	2 Paul as usual went in and for three consecutive Sabbaths developed the arguments from scripture forthem,
3 dichiarando e dimostrando come il Cristo doveva patire e risuscitare da morte. E questo Cristo, diceva, è Gesù che v'annunzio.	3 explaining and proving how it was ordained that the Christ should suffer and rise from the dead. 'Andthe Christ', he said, 'is this Jesus whom I am proclaiming to you.'
4 Alcuni credettero e si unirono con Paolo e Sila, come fece pure una gran moltitudine di proseliti e di gentili, e non poche nobili donne.	4 Some of them were convinced and joined Paul and Silas, and so did a great many godfearing peopleand Greeks, as wel as a number of the leading women.
5 Ma i Giudei, mossi da zelo, prendendo dal volgo dei cattivi soggetti, e fatta gente, misero a tumulto la città, e, attorniata la casa di Giasone, cercavano di tirarli davanti al popolo.	5 The Jews, ful of resentment, enlisted the help of a gang from the market place, stirred up a crowd, andsoon had the whole city in an uproar. They made for Jason's house, hoping to bring them before the People'sAssembly;
6 Ma non avendoli trovati trascinarono Giasone ed alcuni fratelli dai capi della città, gridando: Quei che mettono sottosopra la terra son venuti anche qua,	6 however, they found only Jason and some of the brothers, and these they dragged before the citycouncil, shouting, 'The people who have been turning the whole world upside down have come here now;
7 e Giasone ha dato loro ricetto, e tutti costoro vanno contro gli editti di Cesare, dicendo esservi un altro re, Gesù.	7 they have been staying at Jason's. They have broken Caesar's edicts by claiming that there is anotherking, Jesus.'
8 Così incitarono la folla e i magistrati che udivano tali cose.	8 Hearing this, the citizens and the city council ors were alarmed,
9 Ma ricevuta cauzione da Giasone e da altri li lasciarono andare.	9 and they made Jason and the rest give security before setting them free.
10 I fratelli però, subito, di notte, fecero partire Paolo e Sila per Berea. Questi, appena arrivati, andarono alla sinagoga dei Giudei.	10 When it was dark the brothers immediately sent Paul and Silas away to Beroea, where they went tothe Jewish synagogue as soon as they arrived.
11 Or questi Giudei erano più nobilmente disposti di quelli di Tessalonica, e ricevettero la parola con tutta avidità, esaminando ogni giorno le Scritture, se le cose stessero così.	11 Here the Jews were more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica, and they welcomed the wordvery readily; every day they studied the scriptures to check whether it was true.
12 E molti di loro credettero e molte nobili donne gentili e uomini non pochi.	12 Many of them became believers, and so did many Greek women of high standing and a number ofthe men.
13 Ma com'ebbero inteso i Giudei di Tessalonica che anche in Berea era stata predicata da Paolo la parola di Dio, corsero anche là a suscitare e a muovere a tumulto la popolazione.	13 When the Jews of Thessalonica came to learn that the word of God was being preached by Paul inBeroea as wel , they went there to make trouble and stir up the people.
14 E allora i fratelli mandarono via subito Paolo, perchè andasse fino al mare e ci restarono Sila e Timoteo.	14 So the brothers arranged for Paul to go immediately as far as the coast, leaving Silas and Timothybehind.
15 Quelli poi che accompagnavano Paolo lo condussero ad Atene, e ricevuto l'incarico di dire a Sila e a Timoteo di raggiungerlo al più presto, partirono.	15 Paul's escort took him as far as Athens, and went back with instructions for Silas and Timothy torejoin Paul as soon as they could.
16 E mentre Paolo li attendeva ad Atene, si sentiva l'anima afflitta, nel vedere quella città piena di idoli.	16 Paul waited for them in Athens and there his whole soul was revolted at the sight of a city given overto idolatry.
17 Disputava egli pertanto nella sinagoga coi Giudei e coi proseliti, e nella piazza ogni giorno con chi vi incontrava.	17 In the synagogue he debated with the Jews and the godfearing, and in the market place he debatedevery day with anyone whom he met.
18 E alcuni filosofi epicurei e stoici disputavano con lui, e alcuni dicevano: Che vuol dire questo ciarlatano? Altri poi: Pare che annunzi nuovi dèi; perchè annunziava loro Gesù e la risurrezione.	18 Even a few Epicurean and Stoic philosophers argued with him. Some said, 'What can this parrotmean?' And, because he was preaching about Jesus and Resurrection, others said, 'He seems to be apropagandist for some outlandish gods.'
19 Allora lo presero e lo condussero all'Areopago, dicendo: Possiamo noi sapere quello che sia questa nuova dottrina di cui tu parli?	19 They got him to accompany them to the Areopagus, where they said to him, 'Can we know what thisnew doctrine is that you are teaching?
20 Tu infatti fai suonare certe cose nuove alle nostre orecchie; vorremmo dunque sapere di che si tratta.	20 Some of the things you say seemed startling to us and we would like to find out what they mean.'
21 Or tutti gli Ateniesi e gli ospiti forestieri non badavano ad altro che a dire o ascoltare qualche cosa di nuovo.	21 The one amusement the Athenians and the foreigners living there seem to have is to discuss andlisten to the latest ideas.
22 E Paolo stando in piedi in mezzo all'Areopago, disse: Ateniesi, io vi trovo per ogni riguardo più che religiosi.	22 So Paul stood before the whole council of the Areopagus and made this speech: 'Men of Athens, Ihave seen for myself how extremely scrupulous you are in all religious matters,
23 Passeggiando infatti, e considerando i vostri simulacri ho scoperto persino un altare con questa scritta: Al Dio ignoto. Quello dunque che voi adorate senza conoscerlo, io ve lo annunzio.	23 because, as I strol ed round looking at your sacred monuments, I noticed among other things an altarinscribed: To An Unknown God. In fact, the unknown God you revere is the one I proclaim to you.
24 Il Dio che ha fatto il mondo e tutto ciò che vi si trova, essendo il Signore del Cielo e della terra, non abita in templi fatti dalle mani,	24 'Since the God who made the world and everything in it is himself Lord of heaven and earth, he doesnot make his home in shrines made by human hands.
25 e non è servito dalle mani degli uomini quasi avesse bisogno di qualche cosa, egli che dà a tutti la vita, il respiro e tutte le cose.	25 Nor is he in need of anything, that he should be served by human hands; on the contrary, it is he whogives everything -- including life and breath -- to everyone.
26 Egli ha derivato da un sol uomo tutta la progenie degli uomini, perchè popolassero tutta la faccia della terra, fissando i tempi determinati ed i confini delle loro dimore,	26 From one single principle he not only created the whole human race so that they could occupy theentire earth, but he decreed the times and limits of their habitation.
27 affinchè cerchino Dio se a sorte, brancolando, lo trovino, quantunque egli non sia lungi da ciascuno di noi;	27 And he did this so that they might seek the deity and, by feeling their way towards him, succeed infinding him; and indeed he is not far from any of us,
28 poichè in lui viviamo, ci moviamo e siamo. Come anche taluni dei vostri poeti han detto: Siamo veramente progenie di lui.	28 since it is in him that we live, and move, and exist, as indeed some of your own writers have said: Weare al his children.
29 Essendo adunque noi progenie di Dio, non dobbiamo credere che l'essere divino sia simile all'oro o all'argento, o alla pietra scolpita dall'arte e dall'invenzione dell'uomo.	29 'Since we are the children of God, we have no excuse for thinking that the deity looks like anything ingold, silver or stone that has been carved and designed by a man.
30 Dio non tollerando più tempi di siffatta ignoranza, intima agli uomini tutti, d'ogni nazione, di pentirsi,	30 'But now, overlooking the times of ignorance, God is tel ing everyone everywhere that they mustrepent,
31 perchè ha fissato un giorno in cui giudicherà il mondo a rigor di giustizia, per mezzo di un uomo che egli ha designatom, come ne ha fatto fede a tutti col risuscitarlo da morte.	31 because he has fixed a day when the whole world will be judged in uprightness by a man he hasappointed. And God has publicly proved this by raising him from the dead.'
32 Sentita nominare la risurrezione dei morti, alcuni se ne burlarono, e altri poi dissero: Su ciò ti ascolteremo un'altra volta.	32 At this mention of rising from the dead, some of them burst out laughing; others said, 'We would liketo hear you talk about this another time.'
33 Così Paolo si ritirò di mezzo a loro.	33 After that Paul left them,
34 Alcuni però, unitisi con lui, credettero, tra i quali Dionigi l'Areopagita, una donna di nome Damaride ed altri con loro.	34 but there were some who attached themselves to him and became believers, among them Dionysiusthe Aeropagite and a woman cal ed Damaris, and others besides.
