1 Durante il regno di Assaraddon ritornai a casa mia e mi furono ridati la moglie Anna e il mio figlio Tobia. Alla nostra festa di Pentecoste, che è la festa delle Settimane, mi prepararono un lauto pranzo e mi misi a tavola:	1 Now when I was come home again, and my wife Anna was restored unto me, with my son Tobias, in the feast of Pentecost, which is the holy feast of the seven weeks, there was a good dinner prepared me, in the which I sat down to eat.
2 la tavola era imbandita di varie vivande. Dissi a mio figlio Tobia: "Figlio, va' a vedere se incontri qualche povero fra i compatrioti deportati a Ninive, qualcuno che con tutto il cuore si ricordi del Signore, e conducilo perché pranzi insieme con noi. Ti aspetto, figlio, fino al tuo ritorno".	2 And when I saw abundance of meat, I said to my son, Go and bring what poor man soever thou shalt find out of our brethren, who is mindful of the Lord; and, lo, I tarry for thee.
3 Tobia uscì in cerca di un povero tra i nostri fratelli. Di ritorno disse: "Padre!" Gli risposi: "Ebbene, figlio mio?". Mi rispose: "Padre, hanno assassinato uno della nostra gente e l'hanno gettato sulla piazza. L'hanno strangolato solo un momento fa".	3 But he came again, and said, Father, one of our nation is strangled, and is cast out in the marketplace.
4 Allora feci un salto lasciando il pranzo intatto, tolsi il corpo dalla piazza, lo deposi in una camera onde seppellirlo al tramonto del sole.	4 Then before I had tasted of any meat, I started up, and took him up into a room until the going down of the sun.
5 Ritornato a casa, feci un bagno e presi il pasto con tristezza	5 Then I returned, and washed myself, and ate my meat in heaviness,
6 ricordando la frase del profeta Amos contro Betel: "Si cambieranno le vostre feste in lutto, tutti i vostri canti in lamento". E piansi.	6 Remembering that prophecy of Amos, as he said, Your feasts shall be turned into mourning, and all your mirth into lamentation.
7 Quando poi tramontò il sole, andai a scavare una fossa e lo seppellii.	7 Therefore I wept: and after the going down of the sun I went and made a grave, and buried him.
8 I miei vicini mi deridevano dicendo: "Non ha più paura! Proprio per questo motivo lo hanno già ricercato per ucciderlo ed è fuggito; ora eccolo di nuovo a seppellire i morti".	8 But my neighbours mocked me, and said, This man is not yet afraid to be put to death for this matter: who fled away; and yet, lo, he burieth the dead again.
9 In quella notte, dopo il bagno, entrai nel mio cortile e mi addormentai lungo il muro del cortile con la faccia scoperta a causa del caldo.	9 The same night also I returned from the burial, and slept by the wall of my courtyard, being polluted and my face was uncovered:
10 Non sapevo che sopra di me sul muro c'erano dei passeri; i loro escrementi ancora caldi caddero sui miei occhi e mi produssero delle macchie bianche; mi rivolsi ai medici per curarmi, però quanto più unguenti mi applicavano, tanto più mi si oscuravano gli occhi per le macchie bianche, fino a perdere completamente la vista. Rimasi cieco per quattro anni; tutti i miei parenti ne ebbero pena. Achikar provvide al mio sostentamento durante i due anni che precedettero la sua partenza per l'Elimaide.	10 And I knew not that there were sparrows in the wall, and mine eyes being open, the sparrows muted warm dung into mine eyes, and a whiteness came in mine eyes: and I went to the physicians, but they helped me not: moreover Achiacharus did nourish me, until I went into Elymais.
11 In quel tempo mia moglie Anna si era data ai lavori domestici per guadagnare denaro.	11 And my wife Anna did take women's works to do.
12 Quando essa consegnava i lavori, i clienti le davano la paga. Ora il sette di marzo, terminato un pezzo di stoffa e inviatolo ai clienti, questi, oltre alla mercede completa, le fecero dono di un capretto per la tavola.	12 And when she had sent them home to the owners, they paid her wages, and gave her also besides a kid.
13 Quando il capretto entrò da me, cominciò a belare. Chiamata allora la moglie, le dissi: "Da dove viene questo capretto? Non sarà stato rubato? Restituiscilo ai padroni, perché non abbiamo il diritto di mangiare alcuna cosa rubata".	13 And when it was in my house, and began to cry, I said unto her, From whence is this kid? is it not stolen? render it to the owners; for it is not lawful to eat any thing that is stolen.
14 Essa mi rispose: "Mi è stato dato in sovrappiù della paga". Però io non le credevo e insistevo perché lo restituisse ai proprietari, arrossendo per quello che aveva fatto. Essa mi replicò: "E dove sono le tue elemosine? Dove sono le tue buone opere? Lo si vede da come sei ridotto".	14 But she replied upon me, It was given for a gift more than the wages. Howbeit I did not believe her, but bade her render it to the owners: and I was abashed at her. But she replied upon me, Where are thine alms and thy righteous deeds? behold, thou and all thy works are known.
