| 2 Chi castiga il suo figliuolo, avrà a lodarsi di lui, e tra i conoscenti se ne glorierà. | 2 He who disciplines his son will profit by him, and will boast of him among acquaintances. |
| 3 Chi istruisce suo figlio, fa geloso il nemico, e davanti agli amici se ne glorierà. | 3 He who teaches his son will make his enemies envious, and will glory in him in the presence of friends. |
| 4 Muore il padre di lui e quasi non muore; perchè dopo di sè lascia uno che gli rassomiglia. | 4 The father may die, and yet he is not dead, for he has left behind him one like himself; |
| 5 Durante la sua vita lo vede e n'ha consolazione, e in morte non si rattrista, nè ha da arrossire in faccia a' nemici. | 5 while alive he saw and rejoiced, and when he died he was not grieved; |

| 8 Un cavallo non domato diventa intrattabile, e un figliuolo abbandonato a sè, diventa un rompicollo. | 8 A horse that is untamed turns out to be stubborn, and a son unrestrained turns out to be wilful. |
| 9 Accarezza il figliuolo e ti farà paventare, scherza con lui e ti rattristerà. | 9 Pamper a child, and he will frighten you; play with him, and he will give you grief. |
| 10 Non ridere con lui, perchè tu non abbia a piangere insieme, e, da ultimo, a digrignare i denti. | 10 Do not laugh with him, lest you have sorrow with him, and in the end you will gnash your teeth. |
| 11 Non gli lasciar libertà nella gioventù, e non chiuder un occhio sui suoi capricci. | 11 Give him no authority in his youth, and do not ignore his errors. |
| 12 Piega la sua cervice nella gioventù, e rompigli le costole mentr'è fanciullo; perchè non divenga caparbio e ti si ribelli, e tu n'abbia strazio di cuore. | 12 Bow down his neck in his youth, and beat his sides while he is young, lest he become stubborn and disobey you, and you have sorrow of soul from him. |

| 14 Meglio un povero sano e vigoroso di forze, che un ricco cagionevole e flagellato dal male. | 14 Better off is a poor man who is well and strong in constitution than a rich man who is severely afflicted in body. |
| 15 La salute dell'anima, nella santità della giustizia, vai più d'ogni oro e argento, e il corpo robusto più d'una ricchezza immensa. | 15 Health and soundness are better than all gold, and a robust body than countless riches. |
| 16 Non c'è ricchezza che superi quella della salute del corpo, e non c'è piacere superiore alla gioia del cuore. | 16 There is no wealth better than health of body, and there is no gladness above joy of heart. |
| 17 Meglio la morte che una vita amara, e il riposo eterno che una malattia ostinata. | 17 Death is better than a miserable life, and eternal rest than chronic sickness. |
