1 It happened that while Apol os was in Corinth, Paul made his way overland as far as Ephesus, wherehe found a number of disciples.	1 Mentre che (il predetto) Apollo stette in Corinto, Paulo poi ch' ebbe cercato e visitate le contrade di sopra (di quella provincia di Acaia), pervenne a Efeso; e trovando alquanti discepoli,
2 When he asked, 'Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you became believers?' they answered, 'No, wewere never even told there was such a thing as a Holy Spirit.'	2 domandolli, se come veri fedeli sì avevano ricevuto il Spirito Santo. E rispondendo elli, che non sapevano pure se fusse Spirito Santo, e di ciò nissuna cosa avevano sentito,
3 He asked, 'Then how were you baptised?' They replied, 'With John's baptism.'	3 sì gli domandò e disse: or che battesimo adunque avete? Ed egli risposero: siamo battezzati nel battesimo di Giovanni (Battista).
4 Paul said, 'John's baptism was a baptism of repentance; but he insisted that the people should believein the one who was to come after him -- namely Jesus.'	4 Ai quali rispose Paulo, e disse: Giovanni battezzò di battesimo di penitenza, (inseguando e) dicendo che si credesse a colui dovea venire dopo lui, cioè Iesù.
5 When they heard this, they were baptised in the name of the Lord Jesus,	5 Alle quali parole elli dando fede, ricevettero il battesimo nel nome del Signore nostro Iesù Cristo.
6 and the moment Paul had laid hands on them the Holy Spirit came down on them, and they began tospeak with tongues and to prophesy.	6 E imponendo loro Paulo la mano in capo, venne sopra loro il Spirito Santo, sì che parlavano di diverse lingue, e profetavano.
7 There were about twelve of these men in al .	7 Questi furono forse XII per numero.
8 He began by going to the synagogue, where he spoke out fearlessly and argued persuasively aboutthe kingdom of God. He did this for three months,	8 E poi Paulo entrando per le sinagoghe (dei iudei), parlava (e predicava loro) con grande fidanza del regno di Dio, e così fece per spazio di tre mesi.
9 till the attitude of some of the congregation hardened into unbelief. As soon as they began attackingthe Way in public, he broke with them and took his disciples apart to hold daily discussions in the lecture room ofTyrannus.	9 Ed indurando alcuni e non volendo credere (alle sue parole), anzi (come ostinati) biaste mando Cristo e la sua via (e dottrina) pubblicamente, Paulo si partì da loro con li suoi discepoli.
10 This went on for two years, with the result that al the inhabitants of Asia, both Jews and Greeks, wereable to hear the word of the Lord.	10 E per spazio di due anni andava a disputare alla scuola d' uno Tiranno (pagano), e fece tanta commozione, che (quasi) tutti quelli di Asia, giudei e pagani, vennero a udire la sua dottrina;
11 So remarkable were the miracles worked by God at Paul's hands	11 massimamente per che il Signore confermava la sua dottrina con segni e maraviglie che gli concedeva di fare;
12 that handkerchiefs or aprons which had touched him were taken to the sick, and they were cured oftheir il nesses, and the evil spirits came out of them.	12 intanto che eziandio li suoi sudarj e altri pannicelli (li quali per sua devozione) quelli popoli li tollevano, e ponevano sopra gl' infermi; e rendevano loro sanità, e fuggivano li spiriti maligni (di quelli li quali occupati avevano).
13 But some itinerant Jewish exorcists too tried pronouncing the name of the Lord Jesus over peoplewho were possessed by evil spirits; they used to say, 'I adjure you by the Jesus whose spokesman is Paul.'	13 (Della quale cosa avendogli invidia) alquanti esorcisti iudei tentorono, se potessero cacciare le demonia essi come faceva Paulo; e (facendo loro esorcismi) invocavano il nome di Iesù Cristo sopra quelli, vessati (non avendo però fede in lui, e scongiuravano le demonia) dicendo: per (il nome di) Iesù Cristo, il quale Paulo prèdica, partitevi.
14 Among those who did this were seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest.	14 E questo diceano (massimamente) VII figliuoli del principe delli sacerdoti, che avea nome Sceva.
15 The evil spirit replied, 'Jesus I recognise, and Paul I know, but who are you?'	15 Alli quali rispose (una fiata) uno demonio (il quale elli scongiuravano per il predetto modo), e disse (con uno dispetto): Iesù conosco, e Paulo conosco; ma voi chi siete?
16 and the man with the evil spirit hurled himself at them and overpowered first one and then another,and handled them so violently that they fled from that house stripped of clothing and badly mauled.	16 E (incontinente) quello in cui era il Spirito si gittò loro addosso impetuosamente e percosseli, sì che (quasi) nudi e (molto) impiagati fuggirono da quella casa.
17 Everybody in Ephesus, both Jews and Greeks, heard about this episode; everyone was fil ed withawe, and the name of the Lord Jesus came to be held in great honour.	17 La quale cosa (vedendosi divolgata e) appalesandosi per tutte le contrade di Efeso, molti pagani si convertirono, e magnificavano il nome di Iesù Cristo con uno santo timore di reverenza.
18 Some believers, too, came forward to admit in detail how they had used spel s	18 E molti di quelli che già erano fedeli (si confermavano, e) venivano a confessarsi de' loro peccati.
19 and a number of them who had practised magic col ected their books and made a bonfire of them inpublic. The value of these was calculated to be fifty thousand silver pieces.	19 E molti filosofi e molti malefici si convertirono con tanto fervore, che eziandio arsero, dinanzi a tutti, li loro libri, tanti che valevano più di cinquanta migliara di denari grossi.
20 In this powerful way the word of the Lord spread more and more widely and successful y.	20 E così (per questo modo e per questa cagione) moltiplicorono li fedeli (in Efeso), e crebbe la fede (della devozione di Cristo).
21 When al this was over Paul made up his mind to go back to Jerusalem through Macedonia andAchaia. 'After I have been there,' he said, 'I must go on to see Rome as wel .'	21 E dopo queste cose Paulo per ispirazione divina si propose, passando per Macedonia e per Acaia, d'andare in Ierusalem, dicendo: dopo che sarò stato lì, mi sarà di bisogno di vedere Roma (imaginandosi d' andare poi quindi a Roma).
22 So he sent two of his helpers, Timothy and Erastus, ahead of him to Macedonia, while he remainedfor a time in Asia.	22 E (immantinente) mandando quindi in Macedonia due suoi discepoli, cioè Timoteo ed Erasto, egli uno tempo rimase in Asia.
23 It was during this time that a serious disturbance broke out in connection with the Way.	23 E in quelli tempi si levò una grande perturbazione della via (della fede) di Cristo.
24 A silversmith cal ed Demetrius, who provided work for a large number of craftsmen making silvershrines of Diana,	24 E la cagione fu per che uno Demetrio argentario (cioè che lavorava argento e altri metalli, e) faceva gl' idoli e le statue alla dea Diana (la quale quelli di Efeso adoravano); onde elli (molto ne guadagnava e) a molti ne dava guadagno (temendo di perdere il suo guadagno, se continuamente la reverenza della detta dea cessasse).
25 cal ed a general meeting of them with others in the same trade. 'As you know,' he said, 'it is on thisindustry that we depend for our prosperity.	25 Onde raunò tutti li maestri della detta arte, e disse loro: voi sapete che noi di questa nostra arte viviamo e guadagniamo.
26 Now you must have seen and heard how, not just in Ephesus but nearly everywhere in Asia, this manPaul has persuaded and converted a great number of people with his argument that gods made by hand are notgods at all.	26 E vedete che questo Paulo non solamente in Efeso, ma per tutta Asia, prèdica che non son dii li idoli li quali noi facciamo con le nostre mani.
27 This threatens not only to discredit our trade, but also to reduce the sanctuary of the great goddessDiana to unimportance. It could end up by taking away the prestige of a goddess venerated al over Asia, andindeed al over the world.'	27 Sì che per questo modo noi perdiamo il nostro guadagno, e il tempio della grande (dea) Diana sarà reputato da niente; e la sua maestà, la quale si adora non per Asia solo ma per tutto il mondo, incominciarà a distruggersi.
28 This speech roused them to fury, and they started to shout, 'Great is Diana of the Ephesians!'	28 Le quali parole quelli udendo, accesi di grande ira, incominciorono a gridare, e a dire: grande è Diana, dea degli Efesi.
29 The whole town was fil ed with the uproar and the mob made a concerted rush to the theatre,dragging along two of Paul's Macedonian travelling companions, Gaius and Aristarchus.	29 E con questo rumore tutta la terra commossero, e presero Gaio e Aristarco, compagni di Paulo (non trovando lui).
30 Paul wanted to make an appeal to the people, but the disciples refused to let him;	30 E questo sentendo Paulo, e volendosi mettere tra questo popolo, li discepoli il ritrassero.
31 in fact, some of the Asiarchs, who were friends of his, sent messages urging him not to take the riskof going into the theatre.	31 E alcuni de' principi di Asia, li quali erano suoi amici, il mandorono pregando che per niuno modo (si palesasse nè) venisse tra quello popolo furioso.
32 By now everybody was shouting different things, til the assembly itself had no idea what was goingon; most of them did not even know why they had gathered together.	32 ...... Perciò che (la gente era molto divisa e) la Chiesa era tutta confusa; e molti non sapevano per che cagione quella sedizione e quello rumore fosse così subito.
33 Some of the crowd prevailed upon Alexander, whom the Jews pushed forward; he raised his hand forsilence with the intention of explaining things to the people.	33 E levandosi (uno grande scriba, cioè savio iudeo, che aveva nome) Alessandro (amico di Paulo occultamente) fe' cenno che il popolo stesse quieto, e dessonli audienzia.
34 As soon as they realised he was a Jew, they all started shouting in unison, 'Great is Diana of theEphesians!' and they kept this up for two hours.	34 E (cominciando egli a parlare,) conoscendo il popolo, ch' era giudeo, incominciorono tutti a gridare con alta voce: grande è la Diana, dea degli Efesi. E questo (rumore e) grido durò ben per spazio di due ore.
35 When the town clerk eventual y succeeded in calming the crowd, he said, 'Citizens of Ephesus! Isthere anybody who does not know that the city of the Ephesians is the guardian of the temple of great Diana andof her statue that fell from heaven?	35 Ma poi pur dandoli audienzia, incominciò a rengare, e disse: (signori e) uomini Efesiani, chi è che non sappia che la città (tutta) di Efeso sempre fu cultrice (e fedele) della grande Diana e della prole di Giove?
36 Nobody can contradict this and there is no need for you to get excited or do anything rash.	36 Conciosia cosa adunque che a questo contradire non si possa, parmi e consiglio che questo rumore cessi, e non siate correnti e pazzi impetuosamente
37 These men you have brought here are not guilty of any sacrilege or blasphemy against our goddess.	37 a giudicare questi uomini che avete presi; perciò che voi non li troverete (investigatori) nè sacrileghi, nè che biastemano la dea vostra Diana.
38 If Demetrius and the craftsmen he has with him want to complain about anyone, there are the assizesand the proconsuls; let them take the case to court.	38 E se Demetrio e gli altri suoi seguaci hanno alcuna causa contra di loro, li consuli ci sono, e la ragione si tiene; accusingli a' rettori (e sarà loro tenuta ragione).
39 And if you want to ask any more questions you must raise them in the regular assembly.	39 E se altra questione (o cagione) fusse che si appartenesse a' giudici ecclesiastici, ancora ne possono domandare ragione.
40 We could easily be charged with rioting for today's happenings: there is no ground for it al , and wecan give no justification for this gathering.' When he had finished this speech he dismissed the assembly.	40 Onde non è buona nè giusta cosa, che la città pericoli e dividasi (per questi romani e) per questa sedizione; conciosia cosa che in niuno di costoro si trova colpa che provare si possa, e potremmo correre a pericolo d' essere accusati di mettere la terra a rumore. E dette queste parole, la gente sì venne partendosi, (e cessò il rumore).
