1 E avvenne, che nel sabato secondo-primo passando egli pe' seminati, i suoi discepoli coglievano delle spighe, e stritolatele colle mani, mangiavano.	1 It happened that one Sabbath he was walking through the cornfields, and his disciples were pickingears of corn, rubbing them in their hands and eating them.
2 E allora alcuni dei Farisei disser loro: Perché fate voi quello, che non è permesso in giorno di sabato?	2 Some of the Pharisees said, 'Why are you doing something that is forbidden on the Sabbath day?'
3 E Gesù rispose, e disse loro: Non avete voi dunque letto neppure quel, che fece Davidde, trovandosi affamato egli, e i suoi compagni?	3 Jesus answered them, 'So you have not read what David did when he and his fol owers were hungry-
4 Come entrò nella casa di Dio, e prese i pani della proposizione, e ne mangiò, e ne diede ai suoi compagni: de' quali (pani) non è lecito di mangiare se non a' soli sacerdoti?	4 how he went into the house of God and took the loaves of the offering and ate them and gave them tohis fol owers, loaves which the priests alone are al owed to eat?'
5 E diceva loro: o padrone il Figliuolo dell'uomo anche del sabato.	5 And he said to them, 'The Son of man is master of the Sabbath.'
6 E un altro sabato avvenne, che entrò egli nella sinagoga, e insegnava. Ed era quivi un uomo, che aveva la mano destra inaridita.	6 Now on another Sabbath he went into the synagogue and began to teach, and a man was present, andhis right hand was withered.
7 E gli Scribi, e i Farisei stavano ad osservare, se egli lo guariva nel sabato, per trovar di che accusarlo.	7 The scribes and the Pharisees were watching him to see if he would cure somebody on the Sabbath,hoping to find something to charge him with.
8 Ma egli conosceva i lor pensamenti: e disse a colui, che aveva la mano inaridita: Alzati, e vieni qua in mezzo. E quegli alzatosi si stette.	8 But he knew their thoughts; and he said to the man with the withered hand, 'Get up and stand out in themiddle!' And he came forward and stood there.
9 E Gesù disse loro: Domando a voi, se sia lecito il giorno di sabato di far del bene, o del male; di salvare un uomo, o di ucciderlo?	9 Then Jesus said to them, 'I put it to you: is it permitted on the Sabbath to do good, or to do evil; to savelife, or to destroy it?'
10 E dato a tutti intorno uno sguardo, disse a colui: Stendi la tua mano. Ed egli la stese: e la mano di lui fu renduta sana.	10 Then he looked round at them al and said to the man, 'Stretch out your hand.' He did so, and his handwas restored.
11 Ma coloro entrarono nelle furie, e discorrevano tra di loro, che dovessero far di Gesù.	11 But they were furious and began to discuss the best way of dealing with Jesus.
12 Ed avvenne di que' giorni, che egli andò sopra un monte ad orare, e stava passando la notte in orazione di Dio.	12 Now it happened in those days that he went onto the mountain to pray; and he spent the whole night inprayer to God.
13 E fattosi giorno, chiamò i suoi discepoli: e scelse dodici di essi, (a' quali diede anche il nome di Apostoli)	13 When day came he summoned his disciples and picked out twelve of them; he cal ed them 'apostles':
14 Simone, cui diede il soprannome di Pietro, e Andrea suo fratello, Giacomo, e Giovanni, Filippo, e Bartolommeo,	14 Simon whom he called Peter, and his brother Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew,
15 Matteo, e Tommaso, Giacomo d'Alfeo, e Simone chiamato Zelote,	15 Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Simon cal ed the Zealot,
16 E Giuda di Giacomo, e Giuda Iscariote, che fu il traditore.	16 Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot who became a traitor.
17 E disceso con essi, si fermò alla pianura egli, e la turba de' suoi discepoli, e una gran frotta di popolo di tutta la Giudea, e di Gerusalemme, e del paese marittimo di Tiro, e di Sidone,	17 He then came down with them and stopped at a piece of level ground where there was a largegathering of his disciples, with a great crowd of people from al parts of Judaea and Jerusalem and the coastalregion of Tyre and Sidon
18 La qual gente era venuta per ascoltarlo, e per essere sanata dalle sue malattie. E quelli, che erano tormentati dagli spiriti immondi, erano risanati.	18 who had come to hear him and to be cured of their diseases. People tormented by unclean spirits werealso cured,
19 E tutto il popolo proccurava di toccarlo: perché scaturiva da lui virtù, la quale rendeva a tutti salute.	19 and everyone in the crowd was trying to touch him because power came out of him that cured them al .
20 Ed egli alzati gli occhi verso de' suoi discepoli, diceva: Beati poveri perché vostro è il regno di Dio.	20 Then fixing his eyes on his disciples he said: How blessed are you who are poor: the kingdom of Godis yours.
21 Beati voi, che avete adesso fame: perché sarete satollati. Beati voi, che ora piangete: perché riderete.	21 Blessed are you who are hungry now: you shal have your fil . Blessed are you who are weeping now:you shall laugh.
22 Beati sarete, allora quando gli uomini vi odieranno, e vi scomunicheranno, e vi diranno improperj, e rigetteranno come abbominevole il vostro nome, a causa del figliuolo dell'uomo.	22 'Blessed are you when people hate you, drive you out, abuse you, denounce your name as criminal,on account of the Son of man.
23 Rallegratevi allora, e tripudiate: perché, mirate, come grande è la merce de vostra nel cielo: conciossiachè cosi erano trattati i profeti dai padri di costoro.	23 Rejoice when that day comes and dance for joy, look!-your reward wil be great in heaven. This wasthe way their ancestors treated the prophets.
24 Ma guai a voi, o ricchi: perché ricevuto avete la vostra consolazione.	24 But alas for you who are rich: you are having your consolation now.
25 Guai a voi, che siete satolli: perché soffrirete la fame. Guai a voi, che adesso ridete: perché piangerete, e gemerete.	25 Alas for you who have plenty to eat now: you shal go hungry. Alas for you who are laughing now: youshall mourn and weep.
26 Guai a voi, quando gli uomini vi benediranno: imperocché cosi facevano co' falsi profeti i padri di costoro.	26 'Alas for you when everyone speaks wel of you! This was the way their ancestors treated the falseprophets.
27 Ma a voi, che ascoltate, io dico: Amate i vostri nemici, fate del bene a que', che vi odiano.	27 'But I say this to you who are listening: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,
28 Benedite que', che vi mandano imprecazioni, e orate pe' vostri calunniatori.	28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who treat you badly.
29 E a chi ti da uno schiaffo, presentagli l'altra guancia. E a chi ti toglie il mantello, non vietargli di prendere anche la tonaca.	29 To anyone who slaps you on one cheek, present the other cheek as well; to anyone who takes yourcloak from you, do not refuse your tunic.
30 Dona a chiunque ti chiede: e non ridomandare il tuo da chi te lo leva.	30 Give to everyone who asks you, and do not ask for your property back from someone who takes it.
31 E quel, che volete, che facciano gli uomini inverso di voi, fatelo voi puro con essi.	31 Treat others as you would like people to treat you.
32 Che se voi amate quelli, che vi amano, che merito ne avete voi? imperocché anche i peccatori amano chi gli ama.	32 If you love those who love you, what credit can you expect? Even sinners love those who love them.
33 E se fate del bene a coloro, che a voi ne fanno, che merito ne avete voi? Imperocché anche i peccatori fanno altrettanto.	33 And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit can you expect? For even sinners do thatmuch.
34 E se date in prestito a coloro, da' quali sperate il contraccambio, qnal merito n' avrete voi? Imperocché anche i cattivi prestano a' cattivi per ricevere il contraccambio.	34 And if you lend to those from whom you hope to get money back, what credit can you expect? Evensinners lend to sinners to get back the same amount.
35 Amate pertanto i vostri nemici: fate del bene, e imprestate senza speranza di profitto: e grande sia la vostra mercede, e sarete figliuoli dell'Altissimo, perché egli è benigno con gl' ingrati, e con i cattivi.	35 Instead, love your enemies and do good to them, and lend without any hope of return. You wil have agreat reward, and you wil be children of the Most High, for he himself is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked.
36 Siate adunque misericordiosi, come anche il Padre vostro è misericordioso.	36 'Be compassionate just as your Father is compassionate.
37 Non giudicate, e non sarete giudicati: non condannate, e non sarete condannati. Perdonate, e sarà a voi perdonato.	37 Do not judge, and you will not be judged; do not condemn, and you wil not be condemned; forgive,and you wil be forgiven.
38 Date, e sarà dato a voi: misura giusta, pigiata, scossa, e colma sarà versata in seno a voi: perché colla stessa misura, onde avrete misurato, sarà rimisurato a voi.	38 Give, and there wil be gifts for you: a ful measure, pressed down, shaken together, and overflowing,wil be poured into your lap; because the standard you use will be the standard used for you.'
39 Diceva di più ad essi una similitudine: E' egli possibile, che un cieco guidi un cieco? non caderann' eglino ambedue nella fossa?	39 He also told them a parable, 'Can one blind person guide another? Surely both wil fal into a pit?
40 Non v' ha scolare da più del maestro: ma chicchessia sarà perfetto, ove sia come il suo maestro.	40 Disciple is not superior to teacher; but ful y trained disciple wil be like teacher.
41 Perché poi osservi tu una pagliuzza nell'occhio del tuo fratello; e non badi alla trave, che hai nel tuo occhio?	41 Why do you observe the splinter in your brother's eye and never notice the great log in your own?
42 Ovvero come puoi tu dire al tuo fratello: Lascia, fratello, che io ti cavi dall'occhio la pagliuzza, che vi hai: mentre tu non vedi la trave, che è nel tuo occhio? Ipocrita, cava prima dall'occhio tuo la trave, e allora guarderai di cavare la pagliuzza dall'occhio del tuo fratello.	42 How can you say to your brother, "Brother, let me take out that splinter in your eye," when you cannotsee the great log in your own? Hypocrite! Take the log out of your own eye first, and then you wil see clearlyenough to take out the splinter in your brother's eye.
43 Imperocché non è buon albero quello, che fa i frutti cattivi: né cattivo quello, che fa buon frutto.	43 'There is no sound tree that produces rotten fruit, nor again a rotten tree that produces sound fruit.
44 Imperocché ogni albero distinguesi dal suo frutto. Dappoiché nè fichi si colgono dalle spine; né uva vendemmiasi da un roveto.	44 Every tree can be told by its own fruit: people do not pick figs from thorns, nor gather grapes frombrambles.
45 L'uomo dabbene dal buon tesoro del cuor suo cava fuora del bene: e il cattivo uomo da un cattivo tesoro mette fuori del male. Imperocché dall'abbondanza del cuore parla la bocca.	45 Good people draw what is good from the store of goodness in their hearts; bad people draw what isbad from the store of badness. For the words of the mouth flow out of what fil s the heart.
46 Ma e perché dite voi a me, Signore, Signore: e non fate quel, che io vi dico?	46 'Why do you call me, "Lord, Lord" and not do what I say?
47 Chiunque viene a me, e ascoltale mie parole, e le mette in opera, vi spiegherò io, a che rassomigli:	47 'Everyone who comes to me and listens to my words and acts on them -- I wil show you what such aperson is like.
48 Ei rassomiglia a un uomo, che fabbricò una casa, il quale fece scavo profondo, e gettò i fondamenti sul sasso: e venuta l'inondazione, la fiumana andò a urtare la casa, e non potè smuoverla: perché era fondata sopra la pietra.	48 Such a person is like the man who, when he built a house, dug, and dug deep, and laid thefoundations on rock; when the river was in flood it bore down on that house but could not shake it, it was so welbuilt.
49 Ma colui, che ascolta, e non fa è simile a un uomo, il quale fabbricò una casa sul suolo senza fondamenti: nella qual (casa) urtò la fiumana, ed ella andò subito giù: e fu grande la rovina d quella casa.	49 But someone who listens and does nothing is like the man who built a house on soil, with nofoundations; as soon as the river bore down on it, it col apsed; and what a ruin that house became!'
