BIBBIA MARTINI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Non grida ella forse la sapienza, e la prudenza non alza ella la voce?	1 Is not Wisdom cal ing? Is not Understanding raising her voice?
2 Nelle cime più alte, e più rilevate, lungo le pubbliche vie, ai capi delle strade ella si sta,	2 On the heights overlooking the road, at the crossways, she takes her stand;
3 Presso alle porte della città, sulle porte medesime parla ella, e dice:	3 by the gates, at the entrance to the city, on the access-roads, she cries out,
4 O uomini, a voi io grido, e a' figliuoli degli uomini si indirizza il mio parlare.	4 'I am cal ing to you, al people, my words are addressed to al humanity.
5 Imparate, o piccoli, la prudenza, e voi stolti prestate attenzione,	5 Simpletons, learn how to behave, fools, come to your senses.
6 Ascoltate, mentre di cose grandi son io per discorrere, e le mie labbra si apriranno ad annunziar la giustizia.	6 Listen, I have something important to tel you, when I speak, my words are right.
7 La mia bocca sarà organo della verità, e le mie labbra detesteranno l'empietà,	7 My mouth proclaims the truth, for evil is abhorrent to my lips.
8 I miei discorsi son tutti giusti, nulla è in essi di storto, o di perverso:	8 Al the words from my mouth are upright, nothing false there, nothing crooked,
9 Sono diritti per quei, che hanno intelligenza, e facili per quelli, che amano di imparare.	9 everything plain, if you can understand, straight, if you have acquired knowledge.
10 Fate acquisto della mia disciplina, piuttosto che del denaro, e anteponete all'oro la scienza.	10 Accept my discipline rather than silver, and knowledge of me in preference to finest gold.
11 Perocché la sapienza più vale, che tutte le cose più preziose, e non è da compararsi con lei qualunque cosa più cara.	11 For Wisdom is more precious than jewels, and nothing else is so worthy of desire.
12 In la sapienza abito trai buoni consigli, e presiedo ai saggi pensieri.	12 'I, Wisdom, share house with Discretion, I am mistress of the art of thought.
13 Il timor del Signore è odio del male: io detesto l'arroganza, e la superbia, e la via storta, e la bocca a due lingue.	13 (Fear of Yahweh means hatred of evil.) I hate pride and arrogance, wicked behaviour and a lyingmouth.
14 A me appartiene il consiglio, e l'equità, a me la prudenza, a me la fortezza.	14 To me belong good advice and prudence, I am perception: power is mine!
15 Per me regnano i regi, e i legislatori ordinano quello, che è giusto:	15 By me monarchs rule and princes decree what is right;
16 Per me i principi comandano, e i giudici amministrano la giustizia.	16 by me rulers govern, so do nobles, the lawful authorities.
17 Io amo quei, che mi amano, e quelli, che di buon mattino si svegliano a ricercarmi, mi troveranno.	17 I love those who love me; whoever searches eagerly for me finds me.
18 A me appartiene la dovizia, la gloria, le ampie ricchezze, e la giustizia:	18 With me are riches and honour, lasting wealth and saving justice.
19 Perocché migliore dell'oro, e delle pietre preziose è il mio frutto, e dell'argento più fino li miei prodotti.	19 The fruit I give is better than gold, even the finest, the return I make is better than pure silver.
20 Nelle vie della giustizia io cammino, in mezzo ai sentieri di rettitudine,	20 I walk in the way of uprightness in the path of justice,
21 Per far ricchi coloro, che mi amano, e riempiere i loro tesori.	21 to endow my friends with my wealth and to fil their treasuries.
22 Il Signore mi ebbe con seco nel cominciamento delle opere sue, da principio, prima che alcuna cosa creasse.	22 'Yahweh created me, first-fruits of his fashioning, before the oldest of his works.
23 Dall'eternità ebbi io principato, e ab antico, prima che fosse fatta la terra.	23 From everlasting, I was firmly set, from the beginning, before the earth came into being.
24 Non erano ancora gli abissi, ed io era già concepita, non iscaturivano ancora i fonti delle acque,	24 The deep was not, when I was born, nor were the springs with their abounding waters.
25 Non posavano ancora i monti sulla gravitante lor mole: prima delle colline era io partorita:	25 Before the mountains were settled, before the hil s, I came to birth;
26 Egli non avea ancor fatta la terra, né i fiumi, nè i cardini del mondo.	26 before he had made the earth, the countryside, and the first elements of the world.
27 Quand'egli dava ordine ai cieli io era presente; quando con certa legge, e ne' loro confini chiudeva gli abissi:	27 When he fixed the heavens firm, I was there, when he drew a circle on the surface of the deep,
28 Quand'egli lassù stabiliva l'aere, e sospendeva le sorgive delle acque:	28 when he thickened the clouds above, when the sources of the deep began to swel ,
29 Quando i suoi confini fissava al mare, e dava legge alle acque, perché non oltre passassero i limiti loro; quand'ei gettava i fondamenti della terra	29 when he assigned the sea its boundaries -- and the waters will not encroach on the shore -- when hetraced the foundations of the earth,
30 Con lui era io disponendo tutte le cose, ed era ogni di mio diletto lo scherzare dinanzi a lui continuamente,	30 I was beside the master craftsman, delighting him day after day, ever at play in his presence,
31 Lo scherzare nell'universo: e mia delizia lo stare co' figliuoli degli uomini.	31 at play everywhere on his earth, delighting to be with the children of men.
32 Or adunque, o figliuoli, ascoltateli: Beati quelli, che battono le mie vie.	32 'And now, my children, listen to me. Happy are those who keep my ways.
33 Udite i mie documenti, e siate saggi, e non li rigettate.	33 Listen to instruction and become wise, do not reject it.
34 Beato l'uomo, che mi ascolta, e veglia ogni di all'ingresso delia mia casa, e sta attento sul liminare della mia porta:	34 Blessed, whoever listens to me, who day after day keeps watch at my gates to guard my portals.
35 Chi mi troverà, arerà trovata la vita, e dal Signore riceverà la salute:	35 For whoever finds me finds life, and obtains the favour of Yahweh;
36 Ma chi contro di me peccherà, farà torto all'anima propria. Tutti quelli, che odiano me, amano la morte.	36 but whoever misses me harms himself, al who hate me are in love with death.'
