1 And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples,	1 Tandis qu'Apollos était à Corinthe, Paul, après avoir traversé le haut-pays, arriva à Ephèse. Il ytrouva quelques disciples
2 He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.	2 et leur dit: "Avez-vous reçu l'Esprit Saint quand vous avez embrassé la foi?" Ils lui répondirent:"Mais nous n'avons même pas entendu dire qu'il y a un Esprit Saint."
3 And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism.	3 Et lui: "Quel baptême avez-vous donc reçu"? - "Le baptême de Jean", répondirent-ils.
4 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.	4 Paul dit alors: "Jean a baptisé d'un baptême de repentance, en disant au peuple de croire en celui quiviendrait après lui, c'est-à-dire en Jésus."
5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.	5 A ces mots, ils se firent baptiser au nom du Seigneur Jésus;
6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.	6 et quand Paul leur eut imposé les mains, l'Esprit Saint vint sur eux, et ils se mirent à parler enlangues et à prophétiser.
7 And all the men were about twelve.	7 Ces hommes étaient en tout une douzaine.
8 And he went into the synagogue, and spake boldly for the space of three months, disputing and persuading the things concerning the kingdom of God.	8 Paul se rendit à la synagogue et, pendant trois mois, y parla avec assurance. Il entretenait sesauditeurs du Royaume de Dieu et cherchait à les persuader.
9 But when divers were hardened, and believed not, but spake evil of that way before the multitude, he departed from them, and separated the disciples, disputing daily in the school of one Tyrannus.	9 Certains cependant, endurcis et incrédules, décriaient la Voie devant l'assistance. Il rompit alors aveceux et prit à part les disciples. Chaque jour, il les entretenait dans l'école de Tyrannos.
10 And this continued by the space of two years; so that all they which dwelt in Asia heard the word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks.	10 Il en fut ainsi deux années durant, en sorte que tous les habitants de l'Asie, Juifs et Grecs, purententendre la parole du Seigneur.
11 And God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul:	11 Dieu opérait par les mains de Paul des miracles peu banals,
12 So that from his body were brought unto the sick handkerchiefs or aprons, and the diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out of them.	12 à tel point qu'il suffisait d'appliquer sur les malades des mouchoirs ou des linges qui avaient touchéson corps: alors les maladies les quittaient et les esprits mauvais s'en allaient.
13 Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to call over them which had evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth.	13 Or quelques exorcistes juifs ambulants s'essayèrent à prononcer, eux aussi, le nom du SeigneurJésus sur ceux qui avaient des esprits mauvais. Ils disaient: "Je vous adjure par ce Jésus que Paul proclame."
14 And there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew, and chief of the priests, which did so.	14 Il y avait sept fils de Scéva, un grand prêtre juif, qui agissaient de la sorte.
15 And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye?	15 Mais l'esprit mauvais leur répliqua: "Jésus, je le connais, et Paul, je sais qui c'est. Mais vous autres,qui êtes-vous?"
16 And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and overcame them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.	16 Et se jetant sur eux, l'homme possédé de l'esprit mauvais les maîtrisa les uns et les autres et lesmalmena si bien que c'est nus et couverts de blessures qu'ils s'échappèrent de cette maison.
17 And this was known to all the Jews and Greeks also dwelling at Ephesus; and fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.	17 Tous les habitants d'Ephèse, Juifs et Grecs, surent la chose. La crainte alors s'empara de tous et lenom du Seigneur Jésus fut glorifié.
18 And many that believed came, and confessed, and shewed their deeds.	18 Beaucoup de ceux qui étaient devenus croyants venaient faire leurs aveux et dévoiler leurspratiques.
19 Many of them also which used curious arts brought their books together, and burned them before all men: and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver.	19 Bon nombre de ceux qui s'étaient adonnés à la magie apportaient leurs livres et les brûlaient enprésence de tous. On en estima la valeur: cela faisait 50.000 pièces d'argent.
20 So mightily grew the word of God and prevailed.	20 Ainsi la parole du Seigneur croissait et s'affermissait puissamment.
21 After these things were ended, Paul purposed in the spirit, when he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia, to go to Jerusalem, saying, After I have been there, I must also see Rome.	21 Après ces événements, Paul forma le projet de traverser la Macédoine et l'Achaïe pour gagnerJérusalem. "Après avoir été là, disait-il, il me faut voir également Rome."
22 So he sent into Macedonia two of them that ministered unto him, Timotheus and Erastus; but he himself stayed in Asia for a season.	22 Il envoya alors en Macédoine deux de ses auxiliaires, Timothée et Eraste; pour lui, il resta quelquetemps encore en Asie.
23 And the same time there arose no small stir about that way.	23 Vers ce temps-là, un tumulte assez grave se produisit à propos de la Voie.
24 For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith, which made silver shrines for Diana, brought no small gain unto the craftsmen;	24 Un certain Démétrius, qui était orfèvre et fabriquait des temples d'Artémis en argent, procurait ainsiaux artisans beaucoup de travail.
25 Whom he called together with the workmen of like occupation, and said, Sirs, ye know that by this craft we have our wealth.	25 Il les réunit, ainsi que les ouvriers des métiers similaires, et leur dit: "Mes amis, c'est à cetteindustrie, vous le savez, que nous devons notre bien-être.
26 Moreover ye see and hear, that not alone at Ephesus, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul hath persuaded and turned away much people, saying that they be no gods, which are made with hands:	26 Or, vous le voyez et l'entendez dire, non seulement à Ephèse, mais dans presque toute l'Asie, cePaul, par ses raisons, a entraîné à sa suite une foule considérable, en affirmant qu'ils ne sont pas dieux, ceux quisont sortis de la main des hommes.
27 So that not only this our craft is in danger to be set at nought; but also that the temple of the great goddess Diana should be despised, and her magnificence should be destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worshippeth.	27 Cela risque non seulement de jeter le discrédit sur notre profession, mais encore de faire compterpour rien le sanctuaire même de la grande déesse Artémis, pour finir par dépouiller de son prestige celle querévèrent toute l'Asie et le monde entier."
28 And when they heard these sayings, they were full of wrath, and cried out, saying, Great is Diana of the Ephesians.	28 A ces mots, remplis de colère, ils se mirent à crier: "Grande est l'Artémis des Ephésiens!"
29 And the whole city was filled with confusion: and having caught Gaius and Aristarchus, men of Macedonia, Paul's companions in travel, they rushed with one accord into the theatre.	29 Le désordre gagna la ville entière. On se précipita en masse au théâtre, y entraînant lesMacédoniens Gaïus et Aristarque, compagnons de voyage de Paul.
30 And when Paul would have entered in unto the people, the disciples suffered him not.	30 Paul, lui, voulait se présenter devant l'assemblée du peuple, mais les disciples l'en empêchèrent.
31 And certain of the chief of Asia, which were his friends, sent unto him, desiring him that he would not adventure himself into the theatre.	31 Quelques asiarques même, qui l'avaient en amitié, le firent instamment prier de ne pas s'exposer enallant au théâtre.
32 Some therefore cried one thing, and some another: for the assembly was confused; and the more part knew not wherefore they were come together.	32 Les uns criaient une chose, les autres une autre. L'assemblée était en pleine confusion, et la plupartne savaient même pas pourquoi on s'était réuni.
33 And they drew Alexander out of the multitude, the Jews putting him forward. And Alexander beckoned with the hand, and would have made his defence unto the people.	33 Des gens de la foule persuadèrent Alexandre, que les Juifs poussaient en avant. Alexandre, ayantfait signe de la main, voulait s'expliquer devant le peuple.
34 But when they knew that he was a Jew, all with one voice about the space of two hours cried out, Great is Diana of the Ephesians.	34 Mais quand on eut reconnu que c'était un Juif, tous se mirent à crier d'une seule voix, pendant prèsde deux heures: "Grande est l'Artémis des Ephésiens!"
35 And when the townclerk had appeased the people, he said, Ye men of Ephesus, what man is there that knoweth not how that the city of the Ephesians is a worshipper of the great goddess Diana, and of the image which fell down from Jupiter?	35 Enfin le chancelier calma la foule et dit: "Ephésiens, quel homme au monde ignore que la villed'Ephèse est la gardienne du temple de la grande Artémis et de sa statue tombée du ciel?
36 Seeing then that these things cannot be spoken against, ye ought to be quiet, and to do nothing rashly.	36 Cela étant donc sans conteste, il faut vous tenir tranquilles et ne rien faire d'inconsidéré.
37 For ye have brought hither these men, which are neither robbers of churches, nor yet blasphemers of your goddess.	37 Vous avez amené ces hommes: ils ne sont coupables ni de sacrilège ni de blasphème envers notredéesse.
38 Wherefore if Demetrius, and the craftsmen which are with him, have a matter against any man, the law is open, and there are deputies: let them implead one another.	38 Que si Démétrius et les artisans qui sont avec lui ont des griefs contre quelqu'un, il y a desaudiences, il y a des proconsuls: qu'ils portent plainte.
39 But if ye inquire any thing concerning other matters, it shall be determined in a lawful assembly.	39 Et si vous avez quelque autre affaire à débattre, on la résoudra dans l'assemblée régulière.
40 For we are in danger to be called in question for this day's uproar, there being no cause whereby we may give an account of this concourse.	40 Aussi bien risquons-nous d'être accusés de sédition pour ce qui s'est passé aujourd'hui, vu qu'iln'existe aucun motif qui nous permette de justifier cet attroupement." Et sur ces mots, il congédia l'assemblée.
41 And when he had thus spoken, he dismissed the assembly.
