BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Se encuentra en los documentos que el profeta Jeremías mandó a los deportados que tomaran fuego como ya se ha indicado;	1 'It is on record that the prophet Jeremiah ordered the deportees to take the fire, as we have described,
2 y cómo el profeta, después de darles la Ley, ordenó a los deportados que no se olvidaran de los preceptos del Señor ni se desviaran en sus pensamientos al ver ídolos de oro y plata y las galas que los envolvían.	2 and how, having given them the Law, the prophet warned the deportees never to forget the Lord'sprecepts, nor to let their thoughts be tempted by the sight of gold and silver statues or the finery adorning them.
3 Entre otras cosas, les exhortaba a no apartar la Ley de sus corazones.	3 Among other similar admonitions, he urged them not to let the Law depart from their hearts.
4 Se decía también en el escrito cómo el profeta, después de una revelación, mandó llevar consigo la Tienda y el arca; y cómo salió hacia el monte donde Moisés había subido para contemplar la heredad de Dios.	4 'The same document also describes how the prophet, warned by an oracle, gave orders for the tentand the ark to go with him, when he set out for the mountain which Moses had climbed to survey God's heritage.
5 Y cuando llegó Jeremías, encontró una estancia en forma de cueva; allí metió la Tienda, el arca y el altar del incienso, y tapó la entrada.	5 On his arrival, Jeremiah found a cave-dwel ing, into which he put the tent, the ark and the altar ofincense, afterwards blocking up the entrance.
6 Volvieron algunos de sus acompañantes para marcar el camino, pero no pudieron encontrarlo.	6 Some of his companions went back later to mark out the path but were unable to find it.
7 En cuanto Jeremías lo supo, les reprendió diciéndoles: «Este lugar quedará desconocido hasta que Dios vuelva a reunir a su pueblo y le sea propicio.	7 When Jeremiah learned this, he reproached them, "The place is to remain unknown", he said, "untilGod gathers his people together again and shows them his mercy.
8 El Señor entonces mostrará todo esto; y aparecerá la gloria del Señor y la Nube, como se mostraba en tiempo de Moisés, cuando Salomón rogó que el Lugar fuera solemnemente consagrado».	8 Then the Lord wil bring these things once more to light, and the glory of the Lord will be seen, and sowil the cloud, as it was revealed in the time of Moses and when Solomon prayed that the holy place might begloriously hal owed."
9 Se explicaba también cómo éste, dotado de sabiduría, ofreció el sacrificio de la dedicación y la terminación del Templo.	9 'It was also recorded how Solomon in his wisdom offered the sacrifice of the dedication and completionof the sanctuary.
10 Como Moisés oró al Señor y bajó del cielo fuego, que devoró las ofrendas del sacrificio, así también oró Salomón y bajó fuego que consumió los holocaustos.	10 As Moses had prayed to the Lord and fire had come down from heaven and burned up the sacrifice,so Solomon also prayed, and the fire from above consumed the burnt offerings.
11 Moisés había dicho: «La víctima por el pecado ha sido consumida por no haber sido comida».	11 Moses had said, "Because the sacrifice for sin had not been eaten, it was burnt instead."
12 Salomón celebró igualmente los ocho días de fiesta.	12 Solomon similarly observed the eight-day festival.
13 Lo mismo se narraba también en los archivos y en las Memorias del tiempo de Nehemías; y cómo éste, para fundar una biblioteca, reunió los libros referentes a los reyes y a los profetas, los de David y las cartas de los reyes acerca de las ofrendas.	13 'In addition to the above, it was also recorded, both in these writings and in the Memoirs of Nehemiah, how Nehemiah founded a library and made a col ection of the books dealing with the kings and the prophets, thewritings of David and the letters of the kings on the subject of offerings.
14 De igual modo Judas reunió todos los libros dispersos a causa de la guerra que sufrimos, los cuales están en nuestras manos.	14 Similarly, Judas made a complete col ection of the books dispersed in the late war, and these we stillhave.
15 Por tanto, si tenéis necesidad de ellos, enviad a quienes os los lleven.	15 If you need any of them, send someone to fetch them.
16 A punto ya de celebrar la purificación, os escribimos: Bien haréis también en celebrar estos días.	16 'Since we are about to celebrate the purification, we now write, requesting you to observe the samedays.
17 El Dios que salvó a todo su pueblo y que a todos otorgó la heredad, el reino, el sacerdocio y la santidad,	17 God, who has saved his whole people, conferring heritage, kingdom, priesthood and sanctification onal of us,
18 como había prometido por la Ley, el mismo Dios, como esperamos, se apiadará pronto de nosotros y nos reunirá de todas partes bajo el cielo en el Lugar Santo; pues nos ha sacado de grandes males y ha purificado el Lugar.	18 as he has promised in the Law, will surely, as our hope is in him, be swift to show us mercy andgather us together from everywhere under heaven to the holy place, since he has rescued us from great evilsand has purified it.'
19 La historia de Judas Macabeo y de sus hermanos, la purificación del más grande Templo, la dedicación del altar,	19 The story of Judas Maccabaeus and his brothers, the purification of the great Temple, the dedicationof the altar,
20 las guerras contra Antíoco Epífanes y su hijo Eupátor,	20 together with the wars against Antiochus Epiphanes and his son Eupator,
21 y las manifestaciones celestiales en favor de los que combatieron viril y gloriosamente por el Judaísmo, de suerte que, aun siendo pocos, saquearon toda la región, ahuyentaron las hordas bárbaras,	21 and the celestial manifestations that came to hearten the brave champions of Judaism, so that, fewthough they were, they pil aged the whole country, routed the barbarian hordes,
22 recuperaron el Templo famoso en todo el mundo, liberaron la ciudad y restablecieron las leyes que estaban a punto de ser abolidas, pues el Señor se mostró propicio hacia ellos con toda benignidad;	22 recovered the sanctuary renowned the whole world over, liberated the city and re-established the lawsby then all but abolished, the Lord showing his favour by al his gracious help to them-
23 todo esto, expuesto en cinco libros por Jasón de Cirene, intentaremos nosotros compendiarlo en uno solo.	23 al this, already related in five books by Jason of Cyrene, we shall attempt to condense into a singlework.

Nevertheless, for the sake of rendering a general service, we remain glad to endure this drudgery,
