1 Di quelle cose che son sacrificate alli idoli sapemo che noi avemo ogni scienza; la scienza si enfia, e la carità sì dà edificamento.	1 Now about food which has been dedicated to false gods. We are wel aware that al of us haveknowledge; but while knowledge puffs up, love is what builds up.
2 Ma se alcuno si crede di sapere alcuna cosa, non sa ancora in che modo gli conviene sapere.	2 Someone may think that he has ful knowledge of something and yet not know it as wel as he should;
3 Imperò che quelli che ama Dio, quelli è conosciuto da lui.	3 but someone who loves God is known by God.
4 Ma delli mangiari che son sacrificati alli idoli (così vi rispondo che) noi sapemo che l'idolo non è niuna cosa in questo mondo, e che non è niuno Dio, se non uno.	4 On the subject of eating foods dedicated to false gods, we are wel aware that none of the false godsexists in reality and that there is no God other than the One.
5 Ma egli son alcuni che sono chiamati dii ovver in cielo ovver in terra; certo dicovi che (a' pagani) son molti dii e molti signori.	5 Though there are so-cal ed gods, in the heavens or on earth -- and there are plenty of gods and plentyof lords-
6 Ma noi non avemo, se non uno Dio padre, dal quale vegnono tutte le cose, e noi semo in lui; e uno si è lo Signore Iesù Cristo, per lo quale sono tutte le cose, e noi semo per lui.	6 yet for us there is only one God, the Father from whom al things come and for whom we exist, and oneLord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things come and through whom we exist.
7 Ma la scienza [non] è in tutte le persone; e alquanti hanno conscienza insino ad ora, e manducano quello che manducano colla conscienza che sia sacrificato alli idoli; e così, conciosia cosa che la loro conscienza sia inferma, sì diventa polluta.	7 However, not everybody has this knowledge. There are some in whose consciences false gods stillplay such a part that they take the food as though it had been dedicated to a god; then their conscience, beingvulnerable, is defiled,
8 Chè il manducare non ci mena a Dio; nè se noi non manducheremo) di quello che è sacrificato alli idoli), non verremo però meno; nè se noi (non) manducheremo, non saremo però più ricchi.	8 But of course food cannot make us acceptable to God; we lose nothing by not eating it, we gain nothingby eating it.
9 Guardate che per la ventura questa licenza non vi sia offendimento a coloro che non son ben fermi.	9 Only be careful that this freedom of yours does not in any way turn into an obstacle to trip those whoare vulnerable.
10 Che se alcuno (che non è ben fermo) vederà. manducare a un altro ch' è più savio (non abbia conscienza sappiendo che l'idolo non è nulla), quel tale fratello infermo si corrompe la conscienza a manducare di quel medesimo.	10 Suppose someone sees you, who have the knowledge, sitting eating in the temple of some false god,do you not think that his conscience, vulnerable as it is, may be encouraged to eat foods dedicated to falsegods?
11 E così perisce il fratello infermo per tua conscienza, per il qual Cristo fu morto.	11 And then it would be through your knowledge that this brother for whom Christ died, vulnerable as heis, has been lost.
12 E se voi peccate ne' fratelli, e fate la conscienza loro inferma, e voi sì peccate in Cristo.	12 So, sinning against your brothers and wounding their vulnerable consciences, you would be sinningagainst Christ.
13 Per la qual cosa (io dico così: che) se il mio manducare fa alcuno scandolo al mio fratello, (che) io già mai non voglio manducare carne, perchè io non scandolezzi il fratello mio.	13 That is why, if food can be the cause of a brother's downfal , I wil never eat meat any more, ratherthan cause my brother's downfal .
