1 Conciosiacosa adunque che la santa città si abitasse in ogni pace, e anche la legge ottimamente si osservasse per cagion della disposizione di Onia e della sua pietà, e per gli animi che aveano in odio le cose malfatte,	1 While the holy city lived in perfect peace and the laws were strictly observed because of the piety of the high priest Onias and his hatred of evil,
2 facevasi che anco essi re e principi conducessono il suo luogo degno con sommo onore, e nobilitassono il templo di grandi doni;	2 the kings themselves honored the Place and glorified the temple with the most magnificent gifts.
3 sì che Seleuco, re di Asia, donasse delle sue entrate tutte le spese che s' appartenevano al ministerio del sacrificio.	3 Thus Seleucus, king of Asia, defrayed from his own revenues all the expenses necessary for the sacrificial services.
4 E Simone della tribù di Beniamin, constituito preposito del tempio, contendeva, contrastante a lui il principe de' sacerdoti, di (fabbricare, ovver) ordinare alcuna cosa iniqua nella cittade.	4 But a certain Simon, of the priestly course of Bilgah, who had been appointed superintendent of the temple, had a quarrel with the high priest about the supervision of the city market.
5 Ma vedendo non poter vincere Onia, venne ad Apollonio figliuolo di Tarsea, lo qual in quel tempo era duca della Celesiria e di Fenicia.	5 Since he could not prevail against Onias, he went to Apollonius of Tarsus, who at that time was governor of Coelesyria and Phoenicia,
6 E nunciolli, lo erario di Ierusalem esser pieno di una innumerabile quantità di denari, e una immensa (quantità e) copia di comuni cose, la quale non s'appartiene alla ragione de' sacrificii; ed esser possibile che tutte queste cose cadesse sotto la podestà del re.	6 and reported to him that the treasury in Jerusalem was so full of untold riches that the total sum of money was incalculable and out of all proportion to the cost of the sacrifices, and that it would be possible to bring it all under the control of the king.
7 E Apollonio, avendolo riferito al re delle pecunie che gli era stato nunciato, esso, chiamato Eliodoro, lo qual era sopra le sue faccende, mandollo con comandamenti, che questa predetta pecunia (li fosse mandata, e che lui la) transportasse.	7 When Apollonius had an audience with the king, he informed him about the riches that had been reported to him. The king chose his minister Heliodorus and sent him with instructions to expropriate the aforesaid wealth.
8 Subito Eliodoro si pose in via, sotto specie quasi di andar per le cittadi di Celesiria e di Fenicia; ma secondo la verità andava per adempire il proposito del re.	8 So Heliodorus immediately set out on his journey, ostensibly to visit the cities of Coelesyria and Phoenicia, but in reality to carry out the king's purpose.
9 Ed essendo venuto in Ierusalem, ed essendo ricevuto benignamente dal sommo sacerdote nella città, narrò dello avviso ch' era stato dato delle pecunie; e manifestò per che cagione ch' egli era venuto; e domandava se queste cose erano vere.	9 When he arrived in Jerusalem and had been graciously received by the high priest of the city, he told him about the information that had been given, and explained the reason for his presence, and he asked if these things were really true.
10 Allora il sommo sacerdote li dimostrò li depositi esser alla vita delle vedove e delli pupilli;	10 The high priest explained that part of the money was a care fund for widows and orphans,
11 e alcune cose esser di Ircano Tobia, uomo molto grande e nobile, in quelle cose che avea riferito quello malvagio Simone; e tutto quello ch' era ivi, era quattrocento talenti d' ariento, e ducento talenti d'oro.	11 and a part was the property of Hyrcanus, son of Tobias, a man who occupied a very high position. Contrary to the calumnies of the impious Simon, the total amounted to four hundred talents of silver and two hundred of gold.
12 E saria appo noi al tutto impossibile permettere che fusse ingannati quelli i quali hannosi fidati di noi, e hanno posto in custodia lo aver suo nel tempio lo qual è avuto in venerazione per tutto il mondo per la sua santità.	12 He added that it was utterly unthinkable to defraud those who had placed their trust in the sanctity of the Place and in the sacred inviolability of a temple venerated all over the world.
13 Ed Eliodoro, per quello che lui avea in comandamento del re, diceva che bisognava sanza alcuna contraddizione, che li fusse portato al re ogni cosa.	13 But because of the orders he had from the king, Heliodorus said that in any case the money must be confiscated for the royal treasury.
14 E il dì constituito (e ordinato) entrò Eliodoro per ordinare di far condurre questo al re. E per questo non era poco timore per tutta la città.	14 So on the day he had set he went in to take an inventory of the funds. There was great distress throughout the city.
15 E i sacerdoti stavano dinanzi all' altare prostrati con le stole, e invocavano dal cielo colui lo qual avea posto la legge dei depositi (cioè chiamavano Iddio), acciò che lui conservasse le robe salve a coloro i quali le aveano poste in deposito.	15 Priests prostrated themselves in their priestly robes before the altar, and loudly begged him in heaven who had given the law about deposits to keep the deposits safe for those who had made them.
16 E già colui che vedea il volto del sommo sacerdote, percoteasi nella mente (e attristavasi); però la faccia e il colore, ch' era immutato, declarava lo intrinseco (suo) dolore dell' animo.	16 Whoever saw the appearance of the high priest was pierced to the heart, for the changed color of his face manifested the anguish of his soul.
17 Però che una mestizia d'animo e uno spavento del corpo avea circondato il sommo sacerdote, per lo qual lo dolor del cuore suo a tutti che il vedeano era manifesto.	17 The terror and bodily trembling that had come over the man clearly showed those who saw him the pain that lodged in his heart.
18 E anco molti altri, congregati delle case, veniano pregando con una pubblica petizione, però che il luogo santo era venuto in disprezzo.	18 People rushed out of their houses in crowds to make public supplication, because the Place was in danger of being profaned.
19 E le donne uscivano per le piazze, cinti i cilicii al petto; e anco le vergini, ch' erano chiuse, sollecitamente correvano a Onia; alcune altre alle mura; e alcune guardavano per le finestre;	19 Women, girded with sackcloth below their breasts, filled the streets; maidens secluded indoors ran together, some to the gates, some to the walls, others peered through the windows,
20 e tutte levando le mani al cielo.	20 all of them with hands raised toward heaven, making supplication.
21 Ed era una misera espettazione della moltitudine mista insieme, e del grande sacerdote constituito nel luogo della contenzione.	21 It was pitiful to see the populace variously prostrated in prayer and the high priest full of dread and anguish.
22 E tutti questi gridavano a Dio onnipotente, che lui conservasse quelle cose le quali (con fiducia grande) li erano state date in custodia, per quelli i quali si fidavano di loro.	22 While they were imploring the almighty Lord to keep the deposits safe and secure for those who had placed them in trust,
23 Ma Eliodoro ciò ch' egli avea deliberato mandava ad effetto, presente lui in quello medesimo luogo dell' erario con li suoi satelliti.	23 Heliodorus went on with his plan.
24 Ma il spirito di Dio onnipotente fece una grande evidenza di dimostrazione, per tal modo che tutti quelli, che furono arditi d' ubbidirli, per la virtù di Dio precipitando, loro furono convertiti in gran paura, sì che tutti s'erano divisi uno dall' altro molto.	24 But just as he was approaching the treasury with his bodyguards, the Lord of spirits who holds all power manifested himself in so striking a way that those who had been bold enough to follow Heliodorus were panic-stricken at God's power and fainted away in terror.
25 Però che apparve loro uno cavallo, il qual avea uno terribile (assessore e) cavalcatore, adornato di ottime vestimenta; e costui con impeto percosse prima con li calci Eliodoro; e colui che sedeva sopra il cavallo parea che avesse l'arme d'oro.	25 There appeared to them a richly caparisoned horse, mounted by a dreadful rider. Charging furiously, the horse attacked Heliodorus with its front hoofs. The rider was seen to be wearing golden armor.
26 E anco apparvono due altri giovani, ornati di bellezza, ottimi di gloria e vestiti di belle vestimenta, li quali lo circondorono, e da ciascuna parte lo flagellavano sanza dimora, percotendolo di molte piaghe.	26 Then two other young men, remarkably strong, strikingly beautiful, and splendidly attired, appeared before him. Standing on each side of him, they flogged him unceasingly until they had given him innumerable blows.
27 E subitamente Eliodoro cadette in terra, e preserlo, essendo involuto di molta caligine, e posto di sopra una sedia portatile e' fu portato via.	27 Suddenly he fell to the ground, enveloped in great darkness. Men picked him up and laid him on a stretcher.
28 E colui, il quale era entrato con molti corsieri e satelliti nel predetto erario, era portato non avendo ausilio alcuno, conosciuta la virtù di Dio manifesta.	28 The man who a moment before had entered that treasury with a great retinue and his whole bodyguard was carried away helpless, having clearly experienced the sovereign power of God.
29 E lui istava muto mediante la virtù di Dio, privato di ogni speranza e salute.	29 While he lay speechless and deprived of all hope of aid, due to an act of God's power,
30 Eli altri benedicevano il Signore, però ch' egli magnificava il suo luogo; e lo tempio, lo qual poco inanzi era pieno di paura e di tumulto, apparendo lo Signore onnipotente, fu riempiuto di gaudio e di letizia.	30 the Jews praised the Lord who had marvelously glorified his holy Place; and the temple, charged so shortly before with fear and commotion, was filled with joy and gladness, now that the almighty Lord had manifested himself.
31 E allora alcuni degli amici di Eliodoro pregavano con instanza Onia, ch' egli pregasse lo Altissimo, che li dèsse la vita, lo qual era constituito nel supremo spirito.	31 Soon some of the companions of Heliodorus begged Onias to invoke the Most High, praying that the life of the man who was about to expire might be spared.
32 E considerando il sommo sacerdote, che forse il re non suspicasse alcuna malizia esser usata per i Giudei contro a Eliodoro, offerse per la salute sua sacrificio di salute.	32 Fearing that the king might think that Heliodorus had suffered some foul play at the hands of the Jews, the high priest offered a sacrifice for the man's recovery.
33 E pregando il sommo sacerdote, quelli medesimi giovani con quelle istesse vesti vestiti, istando presenti a Eliodoro, dissono: riferisci grazia a Onia sacerdote, però che per suo amore il Signore t' ha donata la vita.	33 While the high priest was offering the sacrifice of atonement, the same young men in the same clothing again appeared and stood before Heliodorus. "Be very grateful to the high priest Onias," they told him. "It is for his sake that the Lord has spared your life.
34 E tu così flagellato [da Dio] nuncia agli altri le cose grandi di Dio e la sua podestà. E dette queste parole, non comparveno piò.	34 Since you have been scourged by Heaven, proclaim to all men the majesty of God's power." When they had said this, they disappeared.
35 Ed Eliodoro, offerta l'ostia a Dio, e fatti grandi voti (e promissioni) a colui che li concesse la vita (cioè a Dio), e referendo grazia a Onia, e chiamato lo esercito, tornava al re.	35 After Heliodorus had offered a sacrifice to the Lord and made most solemn vows to him who had spared his life, he bade Onias farewell, and returned with his soldiers to the king.
36 E testificava a tutti quelle cose gra di del grande Iddio, le quali lui avea (provate e) vedute cogli occhi suoi.	36 Before all men he gave witness to the deeds of the most high God that he had seen with his own eyes.
37 E domandando il re Eliodoro, chi fosse atto di mandar anco in Ierusalem, (ed Eliodoro) disse:	37 When the king asked Heliodorus who would be a suitable man to be sent to Jerusalem next, he answered:
38 Se tu hai alcuno inimico, ovver traditor del tuo regno, mandalo in quel luogo; e lo riaverai flagellato (e straziato), s' egli potrà campare; però che in quel luogo egli è una particolar virtù di Dio.	38 "If you have an enemy or a plotter against the government, send him there, and you will receive him back well-flogged, if indeed he survives at all; for there is certainly some special divine power about the Place.
39 Però che colui, che ha abitazione in cielo, è visitatore e adiutore di quello luogo; e quelli che vanno per mal fare sono percossi e perduti.	39 He who has his dwelling in heaven watches over that Place and protects it, and he strikes down and destroys those who come to harm it."
40 Di Eliodoro adunque, e dell' erario, così fu la cosa.	40 This was how the matter concerning Heliodorus and the preservation of the treasury turned out.
