1 Il Signore disse a Giosuè: « Non temere, non ti spaventare: presa teco tutta la moltitudine dei combattenti, levati e sali contro la città di Ai chè io ho dato nelle tue mani il suo re, il suo popolo, la sua città e il suo paese.	1 Yahweh then said to Joshua, 'Be fearless and undaunted. Take all your fighting men with you. Up!March against Ai. Look, I have put the king of Ai, his people, his town and his territory at your mercy.
2 Tu farai alla città e al re di Ai, come facesti alla città e al re di Gerico, ma prenderete per voi tutta la preda e tutti gli animali: metti agguati ad occidente della città ».	2 You must treat Ai and its king as you treated Jericho and its king. The only booty you wil take are thespoils and the cattle. Take up a concealed position by the town, to the rear of it.'
3 Giosuè con tutto l'esercito dei combattenti si levò per salire contro Ai, e di notte mandò trenta mila tra i valorosi,	3 Joshua set out to march against Ai with all the fighting men. Joshua chose thirty thousand of the bravestand sent them out under cover of dark,
4 con quest'ordine: « Tendete agguati ad occidente della città, senza allontanarvi troppo, e state tutti pronti:	4 having given them these orders, 'Pay attention! You must take up a concealed position by the town, atthe rear, not very far from the town, and be sure you all keep alert!
5 io col resto della moltitudine che è con me avanzeremo contro la città dalla parte opposta. Quando essi usciranno contro di noi, volteremo le spalle come prima e fuggiremo	5 I, and the whole people with me, shal advance on the town, and when the people of Ai come out toengage us as they did the first time, we shal run away from them.
6 sino a tanto che essi, sicuri che noi fuggiamo come per l'addietro, inseguendoci, non si siano molto allontanati dalla città.	6 They wil then give chase, and we shal draw them away from the town, since they wil think, "They arerunning away from us as they did the first time."
7 Mentre noi fuggiamo inseguiti, voi uscirete dagli agguati e devasterete la città, che il Signore Dio vostro darà nelle vostre mani.	7 You wil then burst out of your concealed position and seize the town; Yahweh your God wil put it atyour mercy.
8 Quando avrete presa, appiccatevi il fuoco e fate ogni cosa secondo gli ordini ».	8 When you have captured the town, set fire to it, in obedience to Yahweh's command. Wel then, theseare my orders.'
9 Così li fece partire. Ed essi andarono al luogo degli agguati e si posero tra Betel ed Ai, ad occidente di Ai. Giosuè restò quella notte in mezzo al popolo,	9 Joshua sent them off, and they made their way to the place of ambush and took up position betweenBethel and Ai, to the west of Ai. Joshua spent the night with the people,
10 poi, alzatosi di gran mattino e fatta la rassegna della sua gente, salì cogli anziani alla testa dell'esercito, sostenuto dall'aiuto dei combattenti.	10 then, getting up early next morning, reviewed the people and, with the elders of Israel, marched on Aiat their head.
11 Giunti di faccia alla città, salirono a settentrione della città, divisi da essa per mezzo d'una valle.	11 All the warriors marching with him advanced on the front of the town and pitched camp north of Ai, withthe val ey between them and the town.
12 Or mentre cinque mila da lui scelti stavano in agguato tra Betel ed Ai, ad occidente di questa città,	12 Joshua took about five thousand men and concealed these between Bethel and Ai, to the west of thetown.
13 tutto il resto dell'esercito marciava in battaglia a settentrione, e gli ultimi di quella moltitudine toccavano il lato occidentale della città. Giosuè adunque partì quella notte e si fermò nel mezzo della valle.	13 The people pitched the main camp to the north of the town and set up its ambush to the west of thetown. Joshua went that night into the middle of the plain.
14 Il re di Ai visto ciò si affrettò di buon mattino ad uscire con tutto l'esercito dalla città, e diresse le schiere verso il deserto, non sapendo che dietro le spalle eran tesi agguati.	14 The king of Ai had seen this; the people of the town got up early and hurried out, so that he and al hispeople could engage Israel in battle on the slope facing the Arabah; but he did not know that an ambush hadbeen laid for him to the rear of the town.
15 Giosuè e tutto Israele si ritirarono, e, fingendo d'aver paura, fuggirono per la strada del deserto.	15 Joshua and al Israel pretended to be beaten by them and took to their heels along the road to thedesert.
16 E quelli, alzando le grida e animandosi l'un l'altro, l'inseguirono. Or quando si furono allontanati dalla città,	16 All the people in the town joined in the pursuit and, in pursuing Joshua, were drawn away from thetown.
17 (neppur uno era rimasto nella città di Ai e di Betel, per inseguire Israele erano usciti alla rinfusa, lasciando le città aperte)	17 Not a man was left in Ai (nor in Bethel), who had not gone in pursuit of Israel; and in pursuing Israelthey left the town undefended.
18 il Signore disse a Giosuè: « Alza lo scudo che hai in mano verso la città di Ai, chè la darò in tuo potere ».	18 Yahweh then said to Joshua, 'Point the sabre in your hand at Ai; for I am about to put the town at yourmercy.' Joshua pointed the sabre in his hand towards the town.
19 E alzato che egli ebbe lo scudo contro la città, quelli che erano in agguato, alzatisi subito, marciarono contro la città, la presero e vi misero il fuoco.	19 No sooner had he stretched out his hand than the men in ambush burst from their position, ranforward, entered the town, captured it and quickly set it on fire.
20 E gli uomini di Ai, che inseguivano Giosuè, quando, voltatisi indietro, videro il fumo che dalla città si alzava fino al cielo, non poteron più scampare nè di qua nè di là, specialmente quando quelli che facevan vista di fuggire e correvano verso il deserto resistettero tenacemente contro coloro che l'inseguivano.	20 When the men of Ai looked back, they saw smoke rising from the town into the sky. None of them hadthe courage to run in any direction, for the people fleeing towards the desert turned back on their pursuers.
21 Allora Giosuè e tutto Israele, vedendo che la città era stata presa e che il fumo di essa saliva in alto, tornarono indietro e percossero la gente di Ai;	21 For, once Joshua and al Israel saw that the town had been seized by the men in ambush, and thatsmoke was rising from the town, they turned about and attacked the men of Ai.
22 quelli che avevan presa e data alle fiamme la città ne uscirono incontro a loro, e cominciarono a battere i nemici, che eran restati in mezzo. Essendo i nemici fatti a pezzi dall'una e dall'altra parte, nessuno di tanta moltitudine potè salvarsi;	22 The others came out from the town to engage them too, and the men of Ai were thus surrounded byIsraelites, some on this side and some on that. The Israelites struck them down until not one was left alive andnone to flee;
23 e presero vivo lo stesso re della città di Ai e lo presentarono a Giosuè.	23 but the king of Ai was taken alive, and brought to Joshua.
24 I figli d'Israele dopo avere sterminati e passati a fil di spada nel medesimo luogo tutti quelli che li avevano inseguiti mentre fuggivano verso il deserto, tornarono indietro e sterminarono la città.	24 When Israel had finished kil ing al the inhabitants of Ai in the open ground, and in the desert wherethey had pursued them, and when every single one had fal en to the sword, al Israel returned to Ai andslaughtered its remaining population.
25 Quelli che perirono in quella giornata, tra uomini e donne, furono dodici mila, tutti quelli di Ai.	25 The number of those who fel that day, men and women together, was twelve thousand, al people ofAi.
26 E Giosuè non ritirò la mano, alzata in alto a sostener lo scudo, finché non furono uccisi tutti gli abitanti di Ai.	26 Joshua did not draw back the hand with which he had pointed the sabre until he had subjected al theinhabitants of Ai to the curse of destruction.
27 In quanto ai bestiami e alla preda, i figli d'Israele se la spartiron tra loro, come il Signore aveva ordinato a Giosuè,	27 For booty, Israel took only the cattle and the spoils of this town, in accordance with the order thatYahweh had given to Joshua.
28 il quale, data alle fiamme la città, ne fece un cumulo eterno,	28 Joshua then burned Ai, making it a ruin for evermore, a desolate place even today.
29 e poi ne sospese il re ad un patibolo sino alla sera; e al tramontar del sole fece deporre dalla croce il cadavere di lui che fu gettato all'entrata stessa della città, e fu coperto con un gran mucchio di pietre che esiste fino ad oggi.	29 He hanged the king of Ai from a tree til evening; but at sunset Joshua ordered his body to be takendown from the tree. It was then thrown down at the entrance to the town gate and on top of it was raised a greatmound of stones, which is stil there today.
30 Allora Giosuè edificò un altare al Signore Dio d'Israele sul monte bal,	30 Joshua then built an altar to Yahweh, God of Israel, on Mount Ebal,
31 come Mosè servo del Signore aveva comandato ai figli d'Israele, e come sta scritto nel libro della legge di Mosè: Un altare di pietre rozze non toccate dal ferro: sopra di esso offerse olocausti al Signore, e immolò ostie pacifiche.	31 as Moses, servant of Yahweh, had ordered the Israelites, as is written in the law of Moses: an altar ofundressed stones, on which no iron has been used. On this they presented burnt offerings to Yahweh andcommunion sacrifices as wel .
32 E scrisse sopra delle pietre il Deuteronomio della legge di Mosè, da lui spiegato dinanzi ai figli d'Israele.	32 There, Joshua wrote on the stones a copy of the Law of Moses, which Moses had written in thepresence of the Israelites.
33 E tutto il popolo e gli anziani e i capi e i giudici stavano in piedi dall'una e dall'altra parte dell'arca, al cospetto dei sacerdoti che portavano l'arca dell'alleanza del Signore. Vi erano tanto i forestieri come gli indigeni. Una metà stava presso il monte Garizim, l'altra metà presso il monte E bai, come aveva ordinato Mosè servo del Signore. Giosuè, dopo aver benedetto il popolo,	33 All Israel, with their elders, their officials and their judges, stood on either side of the ark, facing thelevitical priests who were carrying the ark of the covenant of Yahweh, foreigners with the native-born, half ofthem on the upper slopes of Mount Gerizim, and half of them on the upper slopes of Mount Ebal, as Moses,servant of Yahweh, had originally ordered for the blessing of the people of Israel.
34 lesse tutte le parole di benedizione e di maledizione e tutto quel che era scritto nel libro della legge.	34 After this, Joshua read al the words of the Law -- the blessing and the cursing -- exactly as it standswritten in the Book of the Law.
35 Non trascurò nulla delle cose ordinate da Mosè; ma le rinnovò tutte dinanzi a tutta la moltitudine d'Israele, delle donne, dei fanciulli e dei forestieri che dimoravano con essi.	35 Of every word laid down by Moses, not one was left unread by Joshua in the presence of the wholeassembly of Israel, including the women and children, and the foreigners living with them.
