1 Amasia aveva venticinque anni quando cominciò a regnare, e regnò ventinove anni in Gerusa­lemme: sua madre si chiamava Ioaden di Gerusalemme.	1 Amaziah was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned twenty-nine years in Jerusalem. His mother, named Jehoaddan, was from Jerusalem.
2 Egli fece il bene nel cospetto del Si­gnore, ma non con cuore perfetto.	2 He did what was pleasing in the sight of the LORD, though not wholeheartedly.
3 Quando vide consolidato il suo regno fece scannare quei servi che avevano ucciso il re suo padre;	3 After he had strengthened his hold on the kingdom, he slew those of his servants who had killed the king, his father;
4 però non fece morire i loro figli, secondo quanto sta scritto nel libro della legge di Mosè, dove il Signore diede que­st'ordine: « Non saranno messi a morte i padri per i figli, nè i fi­gli per i loro padri: ciascuno morrà pel proprio peccato ».	4 but he did not put their children to death, for he acted according to what is written in the law, in the Book of Moses, as the LORD commanded: "Fathers shall not be put to death for their children, nor children for their fathers; but only for his own guilt shall a man be put to death."
5 Poi Amasia adunò Giuda, e li distribuì per le famiglie coi tri­buni e i centurioni in tutto Giuda e Beniamino. Fattone il censo da venti anni in su, trovò trecento mila giovani atti alla guerra e a maneggiar lancia e scudo.	5 Amaziah mustered Judah and placed them, out of all Judah and Benjamin according to their ancestral houses, under leaders of thousands and of hundreds. When he had counted those of twenty years and over, he found them to be three hundred thousand picked men fit for war, capable of handling lance and shield.
6 E assoldò altri cento mila uomini valorosi d'Israele, per cento talenti d'argento.	6 He also hired a hundred thousand valiant warriors from Israel for a hundred talents of silver.
7 Ma un uomo di Dio venne da lui, e gli disse: « O re, non venga con te un esercito d'Israele, perchè il Signore non è con Israele, nè con tutti questi figli d'Efraim;	7 But a man of God came to him and said: "O king, let not the army of Israel go with you, for the LORD is not with Israel, with any Ephraimite.
8 e se credi che le guerre dipendano dalla forza dell'esercito, Dio farà sì che tu sia vinto dai nemici, perchè appartiene a Dio dare aiuto e mettere in fuga ».	8 Instead, go on your own, strongly prepared for the conflict; otherwise the LORD will defeat you in the face of the enemy. It is God who has the power to reinforce or to defeat."
9 Amasia disse all'uomo di Dio: « E che ne sarà dei cento talenti che ho dati ai soldati d'Israele? » L'uomo di Dio rispose: « Il Si­gnore ha il modo di potertene dare molti più di questi ».	9 Amaziah answered the man of God, "But what is to be done about the hundred talents that I paid for the troops of Israel?" The man of God replied, "The LORD can give you much more than that."
10 Allora Amasia congedò l'esercito che gli era venuto da Efraim, perchè se ne tornasse al suo pae­se; ma essi tornarono al loro pae­se fortemente sdegnati contro Giuda.	10 Amaziah then disbanded the troops that had come to him from Ephraim, and sent them home. They, however, became furiously angry with Judah, and returned home blazing with resentment.
11 Poi Amasia con fiducia condusse fuori il suo popolo e andò nella Valle delle Saline e sconfisse dieci mila figli di Seir.	11 Amaziah now assumed command of his army. They proceeded to the Valley of Salt, and there they killed ten thousand men of Seir.
12 I figli di Giuda, presi altri dieci mila uomini e condottili sopra un dirupo, li precipitaron giù dall'alto, sicché tutti rimasero sfracellati.	12 The Judahites also brought back another ten thousand alive, whom they led to the summit of the Rock and then cast down, so that they were all crushed.
13 Or quell'esercito che Amasia aveva licenziato, perchè non andasse con lui alla guerra, si sparse per le città di Giuda, da Samaria a Betoron, uccise tre mila uomini e portò via gran preda.	13 Meanwhile, the mercenaries whom Amaziah had dismissed from battle service with him raided the cities of Judah from Samaria to Beth-horon. They killed three thousand of the inhabitants and took away much booty.
14 Ma Amasia dopo la strage degli Idumei, portò via gli dèi dei figli di Seir, e dopo averli fatti suoi dèi li adorò e bruciò loro incenso.	14 When Amaziah returned from his conquest of the Edomites he brought back with him the gods of the people of Seir, which he set up as his own gods; he bowed down before them and offered sacrifice to them.
15 Allora il Signore sdegnato contro Amasia, gli mandò un profeta a dirgli: « Perchè tu hai adorato gli dèi che non han potuto liberare il loro popolo dalla tua mano? »	15 Then the anger of the LORD blazed out against Amaziah, and he sent a prophet to him who said: "Why have you had recourse to this people's gods that could not save their own people from your hand?"
16 Mentre il profeta diceva queste cose, Amasia gli rispose: « Sei tu forse consigliere del re? Taci, chè non ti uccida ». Il profeta disse, nel partire: « Io so che Dio ha risoluto di farti uccidere, perchè hai fatto questo male, e di più non ti sei arreso al mio consiglio ».	16 While he was still speaking, however, the king said to him: "Have you been made the king's counselor? Be silent! Why should it be necessary to kill you?" Therefore the prophet desisted. "I know, however," he said, "that God has let you take counsel to your own destruction, because you have done this thing and have refused to hear my counsel."
17 Poi Amasia re di Giuda, con pessimo consiglio, mandò a dire a Ioas, figlio di Ioacaz, figlio di Iehu, re d'Israele: « Vieni e vediamoci tra noi ».	17 Having taken counsel, King Amaziah of Judah sent messengers to Joash, son of Jehoahaz, son of Jehu, the king of Israel, saying, "Come, let us meet each other face to face."
18 Ma Ioas rimandò i messi con queste parole: « Il cardo che è sul Libano, mandò a dire al cedro del Libano: dà la tua figlia per moglie al mio figliolo. Ma ecco le fiere che erano nei boschi del Libano, passando, calpestarono il cardo.	18 King Joash of Israel sent this reply to King Amaziah of Judah: "The thistle of the Lebanon sent a message to the cedar of the Lebanon, saying, 'Give your daughter to my son for his wife.' But the wild beasts of the Lebanon passed by and trampled the thistle down.
19 Tu hai detto: Io ho sconfìtto Edom! e per questo il tuo cuore s'è levato in superbia: sfattene in riposo a casa tua, perchè provochi contro di te dei malanni che faranno andare in rovina te e Giuda con te? »	19 You are thinking, 'See, I have beaten Edom!', and thus ambition makes you proud. Remain at home. Why involve yourself, and Judah with you, in misfortune and failure?"
20 Ma Amasia non volle dar retta, perchè era voler del Signore che egli fosse dato nelle mani dei nemici a causa degli dèi di Edom.	20 But Amaziah would not listen, for God had determined to hand them over because they had had recourse to the gods of Edom.
21 Difatti Ioas re d'Israele salì, e si videro in faccia, lui e Amasia re di Giuda, in Betsames di Giuda.	21 Therefore King Joash of Israel advanced and he and King Amaziah met in battle at Beth-shemesh of Judah.
22 Giuda, sconfìtto davanti a Israele, fuggi alle sue tende;	22 There Judah was defeated by Israel, and all the Judean soldiers fled homeward.
23 e Amasia re di Giuda, figlio di Ioas, figlio di Ioacaz, fu fatto prigioniero in Betsames da Ioas re d'Israele, e fu da lui condotto in Gerusalemme, ove Ioas abbattè le mura, dalla porta d'Efraim alla porta dell'angolo, per quattrocento cubiti.	23 King Joash of Israel captured Amaziah, king of Judah, son of Joash, son of Jehoahaz, at Beth-shemesh and brought him to Jerusalem. Then he tore down the wall of Jerusalem from the Ephraim Gate to the Corner Gate, a distance of four hundred cubits.
24 Preso poi tutto l'oro e l'argento e tutti i vasi che trovò nella casa di Dio e presso Obededom, e nei tesori della casa reale, ed anche i figli degli ostaggi, li portò in Samaria.	24 He took away all the gold and silver and all the vessels he found in the house of God with Obed-edom, together with the treasures of the palace, and hostages as well. Then he returned to Samaria.
25 Amasia figlio di Ioas re di Giuda visse ancor quindici anni dopo la morte di Ioas figlio di Ioacaz re d'Israele.	25 Amaziah, son of Joash, king of Judah, survived Joash, son of Jehoahaz, king of Israel, by fifteen years.
26 Il rimanente delle gesta di Amasia, dalle prime alle ultime, è scritto nel libro dei re di Giuda e d'Israele.	26 The rest of the acts of Amaziah, first and last, can be found written, as is well known, in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel.
27 Dopo che egli ebbe abbandonato il Signore, gli furono tese insidie in Gerusalemme. Essendo egli fuggito a Lachis, lo fecero inseguire e là lo ammazzarono.	27 Now from the time that Amaziah ceased to follow the LORD, a conspiracy was formed against him in Jerusalem; hence he fled to Lachish. But they pursued him to Lachish and put him to death there.
28 Poi, riportatolo su dei cavalli, lo seppellirono eoi suoi padri nella cit­tà di David.	28 They brought him back on horses and buried him with his ancestors in the City of Judah.
