1 וְלֹא אֲכַחֵד מִכֶּם אֶחָי אֲשֶׁר אֲבוֹתֵינוּ הָיוּ כֻלָּם תַּחַת הֶעָנָן וְכֻלָּם עָבְרוּ בְּתוֹךְ הַיָּם1 I want you to be quite certain, brothers, that our ancestors al had the cloud over them and al passedthrough the sea.
2 וְכֻלָּם נִטְבְּלוּ לְמשֶׁה בֶּעָנָן וּבַיָּם2 In the cloud and in the sea they were all baptised into Moses;
3 וְכֻלָּם אָכְלוּ מַאֲכָל אֶחָד רוּחָנִי3 al ate the same spiritual food
4 וְכֻלָּם שָׁתוּ מַשְׁקֶה אֶחָד רוּחָנִי כִּי שָׁתוּ מִן־הַצּוּר הָרוּחָנִי הַהֹלֵךְ עִמָּהֶם וְהַצּוּר הַהוּא הָיָה הַמָּשִׁיחַ4 and al drank the same spiritual drink, since they drank from the spiritual rock which fol owed them,and that rock was Christ.
5 אֲבָל בְּרֻבָּם לֹא רָצָה הָאֱלֹהִים וּפִגְרֵיהֶם נָפְלוּ בַמִּדְבָּר5 In spite of this, God was not pleased with most of them, and their corpses were scattered over thedesert.
6 וְכָל־זֹאת הָיְתָה־לָּנוּ לְמָשָׁל לְבִלְתִּי הִתְאַוֹּת לְרָעָה כַּאֲשֶׁר הִתְאַוּוּ גַּם־הֵמָּה6 Now these happenings were examples, for our benefit, so that we should never set our hearts, as theydid, on evil things;
7 וְלֹא תִהְיוּ עֹבְדֵי אֱלִילִים כַּאֲשֶׁר הָיוּ מִקְצָתָם כְּמוֹ שֶׁכָּתוּב וַיֵּשֶׁב הָעָם לֶאֱכֹל וְשָׁתוֹ וַיָּקֻמוּ לְצַחֵק7 nor are you to worship false gods, as some of them did, as it says in scripture: The people sat down toeat and drink, and afterwards got up to amuse themselves.
8 וְלֹא־נִהְיֶה זֹנִים כַּאֲשֶׁר זָנוּ מִקְצָתָם וַיִּפְּלוּ בְּיוֹם אֶחָד שְׁלשָׁה וְעֶשְׂרִים אֶלֶף אִישׁ8 Nor, again, are we to fall into sexual immorality; some of them did this, and twenty-three thousand mettheir downfal in one day.
9 וְלֹא־נְנַסֶּה אֶת־הַמָּשִׁיחַ כַּאֲשֶׁר נִסּוּהוּ מִקְצָתָם וַיְאַבְּדוּם הַנְּחָשִׁים9 And we are not to put the Lord to the test; some of them put him to the test, and they were killed bysnakes.
10 גַּם־לֹא תַלִּינוּ כַּאֲשֶׁר הִלִּינוּ מִקְצָתָם וַיָּמוּתוּ בְּיַד הַמַּשְׁחִית10 Never complain; some of them complained, and they were killed by the Destroyer.
11 כָּל־זֹאת מְצָאָתַם לִהְיוֹת לְמָשָׁל וַתִּכָּתֵב לְמוּסָר לָנוּ אֲשֶׁר־הִגִּיעוּ אֵלֵינוּ קִצֵּי הָעוֹלָמִים11 Now all these things happened to them by way of example, and they were described in writing to bea lesson for us, to whom it has fallen to live in the last days of the ages.
12 לָכֵן הַחשֵׁב שֶׁהוּא נִצָּב יֵרֶא פֶּן־יִפּוֹל12 Everyone, no matter how firmly he thinks he is standing, must be careful he does not fall.
13 עֲדַיִן לֹא־בָא עֲלֵיכֶם נִסָּיוֹן אַחֵר בִּלְתִּי אִם־נִסְיוֹן בְּנֵי אָדָם כִּי־נֶאֱמָן הוּא הָאֱלֹהִים אֲשֶׁר לֹא יַנִּיחַ לְנַסּוֹת אֶתְכֶם לְמַעְלָה מִיכָלְתְּכֶם כִּי אִם־יִתֵּן עִם־הַנִּסָּיוֹן גַּם־תוֹצְאֹתָיו כְּדֵי שֶׁתּוּכְלוּ שְׂאֵת13 None of the trials which have come upon you is more than a human being can stand. You can trustthat God wil not let you be put to the test beyond your strength, but with any trial will also provide a way out byenabling you to put up with it.
14 עַל־כֵּן חֲבִיבָי נוּסוּ מֵעֲבוֹדַת אֱלִילִים14 For that reason, my dear friends, have nothing to do with the worship of false gods.
15 כְּמוֹ אֶל־נְבוֹנִים מְדַבֵּר אָנֹכִי וְשִׁפְטוּ אַתֶּם אֵת אֲשֶׁר אֹמַר15 I am talking to you as sensible people; weigh up for yourselves what I have to say.
16 כּוֹס הַבְּרָכָה אֲשֶׁר אֲנַחְנוּ מְבָרְכִים הֲלֹא הִיא הִתְחַבְּרוּת דַּם הַמָּשִׁיחַ וְהַלֶּחֶם אֲשֶׁר אֲנַחְנוּ בֹצְעִים הֲלֹא הוּא הִתְחַבְּרוּת גּוּף הַמָּשִׁיחַ16 The blessing-cup, which we bless, is it not a sharing in the blood of Christ; and the loaf of bread which we break, is it not a sharing in the body of Christ?
17 כִּי־לֶחֶם אֶחָד הוּא לָכֵן גַּם־גּוּף אֶחָד אֲנַחְנוּ הָרַבִּים בַּאֲשֶׁר לְכֻלָּנוּ חֵלֶק בַּלֶּחֶם הָאֶחָד17 And as there is one loaf, so we, although there are many of us, are one single body, for we all sharein the one loaf.
18 רְאוּ אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵל לְפִי הַבָּשָׂר הֲלֹא אֹכְלֵי הַזְּבָחִים חַבְרֵי הַמִּזְבֵּחַ הֵמָּה18 Now compare the natural people of Israel: is it not true that those who eat the sacrifices share thealtar?
19 וְעַתָּה מָה אֹמַר הֲיֵשׁ מַמָּשׁ בָּאֱלִיל אִם־יֵשׁ מַמָּשׁ בְּזִבְחֵי אֱלִילִים19 What does this mean? That the dedication of food to false gods amounts to anything? Or that falsegods themselves amount to anything?
20 אֶלָּא אֵת אֲשֶׁר־יִזְבְּחוּ הַגּוֹיִם לַשֵּׁדִים הֵם זֹבְחִים וְלֹא לֵאלֹהִים וַאֲנִי לֹא אֶחְפֹּץ הֱיֹתְכֶם חֲבֵרִים לַשֵּׁדִים20 No, it does not; simply that when pagans sacrifice, what is sacrificed by them is sacrificed to demonswho are not God. I do not want you to share with demons.
21 לֹא תוּכְלוּ לִשְׁתּוֹת יַחַד כּוֹס אֲדֹנֵינוּ וְגַם־כּוֹס הַשֵּׁדִים וְלֹא תוּכְלוּ לְהִתְחַבֵּר אֶל־שֻׁלְחַן אֲדֹנֵינוּ וְגַם אֶל־שֻׁלְחַן הַשֵּׁדִים21 You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons as wel ; you cannot have a share at theLord's table and the demons' table as wel .
22 הֲנָעֵז לְהַקְנִיא אֶת־אֲדֹנֵינוּ הֲכִי חֲזָקִים אֲנַחְנוּ מִמֶּנּוּ22 Do we real y want to arouse the Lord's jealousy; are we stronger than he is?
23 הַכֹּל בִּרְשׁוּתִי אֲבָל אֵין הַכֹּל מוֹעִיל הַכֹּל בִּרְשׁוּתִי אֲבָל אֵין הַכֹּל בֹּנֶה23 'Everything is permissible'; maybe so, but not everything does good. True, everything is permissible,but not everything builds people up.
24 אִישׁ אִישׁ אַל־יְבַקֵּשׁ אֶת־תּוֹעֶלֶת עַצְמוֹ כִּי אִם־אֶת־תּוֹעֶלֶת רֵעֵהוּ24 Nobody should be looking for selfish advantage, but everybody for someone else's.
25 כָּל־הַנִּמְכָּר בַּמַּקּוֹלִין אֹתוֹ תֹאכֵלוּ וְאַל־תַּחְקְרוּ מִפְּנֵי מִכְשֹׁל הַלֵּב25 Eat anything that is sold in butchers' shops; there is no need to ask questions for conscience's sake,
26 כִּי לַיהוָֹה הָאָרֶץ וּמְלוֹאָהּ26 since To the Lord belong the earth and all it contains.
27 וְאִם־יִקְרָא אֶתְכֶם אִישׁ מֵאֲשֶׁר אֵינָם מַאֲמִינִים וְתִרְצוּ לָלֶכֶת אֵלָיו אָכוֹל תֹּאכְלוּ מִכֹּל אֲשֶׁר־יָשִׂימוּ לִפְנֵיכֶם וְאַל־תַּחְקְרוּ מִפְּנֵי מִכְשׁוֹל הַלֵּב27 If an unbeliever invites you to a meal, go if you want to, and eat whatever is put before you; you neednot ask questions of conscience first.
28 וְאִישׁ כִּי־יֹאמַר אֲלֵיכֶם זֶה הוּא זֶבַח אֱלִילִים אַל־תֹּאכְלוּ בַּעֲבוּר הַמּוֹדִיעַ וּמִפְּנֵי מִכְשׁוֹל הַלֵּב כִּי לַיהוָֹה הָאָרֶץ וּמְלוֹאָהּ28 But if someone says to you, 'This food has been offered in sacrifice,' do not eat it, out ofconsideration for the person that told you, for conscience's sake-
29 וְהַלֵּב אֲשֶׁר־אֲנִי אֹמֵר לֹא לִבְּךָ כִּי אִם־לֵב רֵעֶךָ כִּי לָמָּה־זֶּה תִּשָּׁפֵט חֵרוּתִי עַל־יְדֵי לֵב הָאַחֵר29 not your own conscience, I mean, but the other person's. Why should my freedom be governed bysomebody else's conscience?
30 וְאִם־אֹכֵל אֲנִי בְּתוֹדָה לָמָה אֶהְיֶה מְגֻדָּף עַל־הַדָּבָר אֲשֶׁר אֲנִי מוֹדֶה עָלָיו30 Provided that I accept it with gratitude, why should I be blamed for eating food for which I givethanks?
31 לָכֵן אִם תֹּאכְלוּ אוֹ אִם־תִּשְׁתּוּ אוֹ־כֹל אֲשֶׁר תַּעֲשֹוּ אֶת־הַכֹּל עֲשֹוּ לִכְבוֹד אֱלֹהִים31 Whatever you eat, then, or drink, and whatever else you do, do it al for the glory of God.
32 וְאַל־תִּתְּנוּ מִכְשׁוֹל לֹא לַיְּהוּדִים וְלֹא לַיְּוָנִים וְלֹא לִקְהִלַּת אֱלֹהִים32 Never be a cause of offence, either to Jews or to Greeks or to the Church of God,
33 כַּאֲשֶׁר גַּם־אָנֹכִי מְבַקֵּשׁ לִהְיוֹת רָצוּי לַכֹּל בַּכֹּל וְלֹא אֲבַקֵּשׁ תּוֹעֶלֶת עַצְמִי כִּי־אִם שֶׁל־הָרַבִּים לְמַעַן יִוָּשֵׁעוּ33 just as I try to accommodate everybody in everything, not looking for my own advantage, but for theadvantage of everybody else, so that they may be saved.
