1 וַיְהִי בִּשְׁנַת אַרְבַּע לְדָרְיָוֶשׁ הַמֶּלֶךְ הָיָה דְבַר־יְהוָה אֶל־זְכַרְיָה בְּאַרְבָּעָה לַחֹדֶשׁ הַתְּשִׁעִי בְּכִסְלֵו	1 In the fourth year of King Darius, the word of Yahweh was addressed to Zechariah on the fourth day ofthe ninth month, the month of Chislev.
2 וַיִּשְׁלַח בֵּית־אֵל שַׂר־אֶצֶר וְרֶגֶם מֶלֶךְ וַאֲנָשָׁיו לְחַלֹּות אֶת־פְּנֵי יְהוָה	2 Bethel sent Sharezer with a deputation to entreat Yahweh's favour
3 לֵאמֹר אֶל־הַכֹּהֲנִים אֲשֶׁר לְבֵית־יְהוָה צְבָאֹות וְאֶל־הַנְּבִיאִים לֵאמֹר הַאֶבְכֶּה בַּחֹדֶשׁ הַחֲמִשִׁי הִנָּזֵר כַּאֲשֶׁר עָשִׂיתִי זֶה כַּמֶּה שָׁנִים׃ פ	3 and to ask the priests in the Temple of Yahweh Sabaoth and the prophets, 'Ought I to go on mourningand fasting in the fifth month as I have been doing for so many years past?'
4 וַיְהִי דְּבַר־יְהוָה צְבָאֹות אֵלַי לֵאמֹר	4 Then the word of Yahweh Sabaoth was addressed to me as fol ows,
5 אֱמֹר אֶל־כָּל־עַם הָאָרֶץ וְאֶל־הַכֹּהֲנִים לֵאמֹר כִּי־צַמְתֶּם וְסָפֹוד בַּחֲמִישִׁי וּבַשְּׁבִיעִי וְזֶה שִׁבְעִים שָׁנָה הֲצֹום צַמְתֻּנִי אָנִי	5 'Say to al the people of the country and to the priests, "While you have been fasting and mourning inthe fifth and seventh months for the past seventy years, have you real y been fasting for my sake?
6 וְכִי תֹאכְלוּ וְכִי תִשְׁתּוּ הֲלֹוא אַתֶּם הָאֹכְלִים וְאַתֶּם הַשֹּׁתִים	6 And when you were eating and drinking, were you not eating and drinking for your own sake?
7 הֲלֹוא אֶת־הַדְּבָרִים אֲשֶׁר קָרָא יְהוָה בְּיַד הַנְּבִיאִים הָרִאשֹׁנִים בִּהְיֹות יְרוּשָׁלִַם יֹשֶׁבֶת וּשְׁלֵוָה וְעָרֶיהָ סְבִיבֹתֶיהָ וְהַנֶּגֶב וְהַשְּׁפֵלָה יֹשֵׁב׃ פ	7 Do you not know the words which Yahweh proclaimed through the prophets in the past, whenJerusalem was inhabited and secure, as were her surrounding towns, and when the Negeb and the lowlandswere inhabited?" ' (
8 וַיְהִי דְּבַר־יְהוָה אֶל־זְכַרְיָה לֵאמֹר	8 The word of Yahweh was addressed to Zechariah as fol ows,
9 כֹּה אָמַר יְהוָה צְבָאֹות לֵאמֹר מִשְׁפַּט אֱמֶת שְׁפֹטוּ וְחֶסֶד וְרַחֲמִים עֲשׂוּ אִישׁ אֶת־אָחִיו	9 'Yahweh Sabaoth says this.) He said, "Apply the law fairly, and show faithful love and compassion towards one another.
10 וְאַלְמָנָה וְיָתֹום גֵּר וְעָנִי אַל־תַּעֲשֹׁקוּ וְרָעַת אִישׁ אָחִיו אַל־תַּחְשְׁבוּ בִּלְבַבְכֶם	10 Do not oppress the widow and the orphan, the foreigner and the poor, and do not secretly plan evilagainst one another."
11 וַיְמָאֲנוּ לְהַקְשִׁיב וַיִּתְּנוּ כָתֵף סֹרָרֶת וְאָזְנֵיהֶם הִכְבִּידוּ מִשְּׁמֹועַ	11 But they would not listen; they turned a rebel ious shoulder; they stopped their ears rather than hear;
12 וְלִבָּם שָׂמוּ שָׁמִיר מִשְּׁמֹועַ אֶת־הַתֹּורָה וְאֶת־הַדְּבָרִים אֲשֶׁר שָׁלַח יְהוָה צְבָאֹות בְּרוּחֹו בְּיַד הַנְּבִיאִים הָרִאשֹׁנִים וַיְהִי קֶצֶף גָּדֹול מֵאֵת יְהוָה צְבָאֹות	12 they made their hearts adamant rather than listen to the teaching and the words that Yahweh Sabaothhad sent -- by his spirit -- through the prophets in the past; and consequently the fury of Yahweh Sabaothovertook them.
13 וַיְהִי כַאֲשֶׁר־קָרָא וְלֹא שָׁמֵעוּ כֵּן יִקְרְאוּ וְלֹא אֶשְׁמָע אָמַר יְהוָה צְבָאֹות	13 And so, since when he cal ed they would not listen, "I would not listen when they called", says YahwehSabaoth,
14 וְאֵסָעֲרֵם עַל כָּל־הַגֹּויִם אֲשֶׁר לֹא־יְדָעוּם וְהָאָרֶץ נָשַׁמָּה אַחֲרֵיהֶם מֵעֹבֵר וּמִשָּׁב וַיָּשִׂימוּ אֶרֶץ־חֶמְדָּה לְשַׁמָּה׃ פ	14 "but scattered them among al the nations unknown to them. Hence, after they had gone, the countrywas deserted, and no one came or went. They had turned a land of delights into a desert." '
15 כִּי אֶת־אֲשֶׁר אֲנִי פֹעֵל לֹא יָדַעְתִּי כִּי אֵינֶנִּי עֹשֶׂה אֵת אֲשֶׁר־אֲנִי רֹצֶה בּוֹ כִּי אִם־אֲשֶׁר שָׂנֵאתִי אֹתוֹ אֲנִי עֹשֶׂה
16 וּבַעֲשׂוֹתִי אֵת אֲשֶׁר לֹא־רָצִיתִי בוֹ הִנְנִי מוֹדֶה בָזֹאת כִּי הַתּוֹרָה טוֹבָה הִיא
17 וְעַתָּה לֹא־אָנֹכִי עוֹד הַפֹּעֵל אֹתוֹ כִּי אִם־הַחֵטְא הַיּשֵׁב בִּי
18 כִּי יָדַעְתִּי אֲשֶׁר־בִּי בִּבְשָׂרִי לֹא יֵשֵׁב טוֹב הֵן הָרָצוֹן יֵשׁ עִמָּדִי אֲבָל עֲשׂוֹת הַטּוֹב לֹא מָצָאתִי
19 כִּי אֵינֶנִּי עֹשֶׂה הַטּוֹב אֲשֶׁר־אֲנִי רֹצֶה בּוֹ כִּי אִם־הָרַע אֲשֶׁר אֵינֶנִּי רֹצֶה בּוֹ אוֹתוֹ אֲנִי עֹשֶׂה
20 וְאִם אֶת־אֲשֶׁר לֹא־רָצִיתִי בוֹ אֲנִי עֹשֶׂה לֹא־עוֹד אָנֹכִי הַפֹּעֵל כִּי הַחֵטְא הַיּשֵׁב בְּקִרְבִּי
21 וּבְכֵן מֹצֵא־אֲנִי בִי זֶה הַחֹק אָנֹכִי רֹצֶה לַעֲשׂוֹת הַטּוֹב וְדָבַק־בִּי הָרָע
22 כִּי לְפִי הָאָדָם הַפְּנִימִי חָפַצְתִּי בְּתוֹרַת אֱלֹהִים
23 אַךְ רֹאֶה־אֲנִי בְאֵבָרַי חֹק אַחֵר הַלֹּחֵם לְחָק־שִׂכְלִי וְיוֹלִיכֵנִי שְׁבִי לְתוֹרַת הַחֵטְא אֲשֶׁר בְּאֵבָרָי
24 אוֹי־לִי הָאָדָם הָאֻמְלָל מִי יַצִּילֵנִי מִגּוּף הַמָּוֶת הַזֶּה
25 אוֹדֶה לֵאלֹהִים בְּיֵשׁוּעַ הַמָּשִׁיחַ אֲדֹנֵינוּ לָכֵן בְּשִׂכְלִי הִנְנִי עֶבֶד לְתוֹרַת הָאֱלֹהִים וּבִבְשָׂרִי אֲנִי עֶבֶד לְתוֹרַת הַחֵטְא
