1 וַיִּמְלֹךְ יְהֹושָׁפָט בְּנֹו תַּחְתָּיו וַיִּתְחַזֵּק עַל־יִשְׂרָאֵל | 1 When his son Jehoshaphat succeeded him, he made himself stronger against Israel |
2 וַיִּתֶּן־חַיִל בְּכָל־עָרֵי יְהוּדָה הַבְּצֻרֹות וַיִּתֵּן נְצִיבִים בְּאֶרֶץ יְהוּדָה וּבְעָרֵי אֶפְרַיִם אֲשֶׁר לָכַד אָסָא אָבִיו | 2 by stationing troops in al the fortified towns in Judah and by garrisoning Judah and the towns ofEphraim which his father Asa had captured. |
3 וַיְהִי יְהוָה עִם־יְהֹושָׁפָט כִּי הָלַךְ בְּדַרְכֵי דָּוִיד אָבִיו הָרִאשֹׁנִים וְלֹא דָרַשׁ לַבְּעָלִים | 3 Yahweh was with Jehoshaphat because he fol owed the example of his father's earlier days and didnot have recourse to Baal, |
4 כִּי לֵאלֹהֵי אָבִיו דָּרָשׁ וּבְמִצְוֹתָיו הָלָךְ וְלֹא כְּמַעֲשֵׂה יִשְׂרָאֵל | 4 but sought Yahweh, the God of his father, fol owing his commandments and not behaving as Israeldid. |
5 וַיָּכֶן יְהוָה אֶת־הַמַּמְלָכָה בְּיָדֹו וַיִּתְּנוּ כָל־יְהוּדָה מִנְחָה לִיהֹושָׁפָט וַיְהִי־לֹו עֹשֶׁר־וְכָבֹוד לָרֹב | 5 Because of this, Yahweh put him in secure control of the kingdom, while al Judah gave Jehoshaphatpresents until ample riches and honour were his. |
6 וַיִּגְבַּהּ לִבֹּו בְּדַרְכֵי יְהוָה וְעֹוד הֵסִיר אֶת־הַבָּמֹות וְאֶת־הָאֲשֵׁרִים מִיהוּדָה׃ פ | 6 He was so enthusiastic about obeying Yahweh that once again he abolished the high places andsacred poles in Judah. |
7 וּבִשְׁנַת שָׁלֹושׁ לְמָלְכֹו שָׁלַח לְשָׂרָיו לְבֶן־חַיִל וּלְעֹבַדְיָה וְלִזְכַרְיָה וְלִנְתַנְאֵל וּלְמִיכָיָהוּ לְלַמֵּד בְּעָרֵי יְהוּדָה | 7 In the third year of his reign he sent his leading men-Ben-Hail, Obadiah, Zechariah, Nethanel andMicaiah, to give instruction in the towns of Judah. |
8 וְעִמָּהֶם הַלְוִיִּם שְׁמַעְיָהוּ וּנְתַנְיָהוּ וּזְבַדְיָהוּ וַעֲשָׂהאֵל [וּשְׁמִרִימֹות כ] (וּשְׁמִירָמֹות ק) וִיהֹונָתָן וַאֲדֹנִיָּהוּ וְטֹובִיָּהוּ וְטֹוב אֲדֹונִיָּה הַלְוִיִּם וְעִמָּהֶם אֱלִישָׁמָע וִיהֹורָם הַכֹּהֲנִים | 8 With them went the Levites: Shemaiah, Nethaniah, Zebadiah, Asahel, Shemiramoth, Jehonathan,Adonijah and Tobijah, the Levites; Elishama and Jehoram the priests went with them. |
9 וַיְלַמְּדוּ בִּיהוּדָה וְעִמָּהֶם סֵפֶר תֹּורַת יְהוָה וַיָּסֹבּוּ בְּכָל־עָרֵי יְהוּדָה וַיְלַמְּדוּ בָּעָם | 9 They gave instruction in Judah, having with them the book of the Law of Yahweh, and went round althe towns of Judah instructing the people. |
10 וַיְהִי ׀ פַּחַד יְהוָה עַל כָּל־מַמְלְכֹות הָאֲרָצֹות אֲשֶׁר סְבִיבֹות יְהוּדָה וְלֹא נִלְחֲמוּ עִם־יְהֹושָׁפָט | 10 A panic from Yahweh seized all the kings of the countries surrounding Judah, as a result of whichthey did not make war on Jehoshaphat. |
11 וּמִן־פְּלִשְׁתִּים מְבִיאִים לִיהֹושָׁפָט מִנְחָה וְכֶסֶף מַשָּׂא גַּם הָעַרְבִיאִים מְבִיאִים לֹו צֹאן אֵילִים שִׁבְעַת אֲלָפִים וּשְׁבַע מֵאֹות וּתְיָשִׁים שִׁבְעַת אֲלָפִים וּשְׁבַע מֵאֹות׃ פ | 11 Some of the Philistines brought Jehoshaphat presents and a load of silver and the Arabs brought himseven thousand seven hundred rams and seven thousand seven hundred he-goats. |
12 וַיְהִי יְהֹושָׁפָט הֹלֵךְ וְגָדֵל עַד־לְמָעְלָה וַיִּבֶן בִּיהוּדָה בִּירָנִיֹּות וְעָרֵי מִסְכְּנֹות | 12 Jehoshaphat became more and more powerful. He built fortresses and storage towns in Judah. |
13 וּמְלָאכָה רַבָּה הָיָה לֹו בְּעָרֵי יְהוּדָה וְאַנְשֵׁי מִלְחָמָה גִּבֹּורֵי חַיִל בִּירוּשָׁלִָם | 13 He accumulated ample supplies in the towns of Judah. He also had warriors, outstanding men, inJerusalem. |
14 וְאֵלֶּה פְקֻדָּתָם לְבֵית אֲבֹותֵיהֶם לִיהוּדָה שָׂרֵי אֲלָפִים עַדְנָה הַשָּׂר וְעִמֹּו גִּבֹּורֵי חַיִל שְׁלֹשׁ מֵאֹות אָלֶף׃ ס | 14 According to family, this is how they were classified: Over the commanders of the thousands ofJudah was General Adnah, who had three hundred thousand outstanding men; |
15 וְעַל־יָדֹו יְהֹוחָנָן הַשָּׂר וְעִמֹּו מָאתַיִם וּשְׁמֹונִים אָלֶף׃ ס | 15 Under him was General Jehohanan, who had two hundred and eighty thousand; |
16 וְעַל־יָדֹו עֲמַסְיָה בֶן־זִכְרִי הַמִּתְנַדֵּב לַיהוָה וְעִמֹּו מָאתַיִם אֶלֶף גִּבֹּור חָיִל׃ ס | 16 Under him was Amasiah son of Zichri, who had volunteered for Yahweh and who had two hundredthousand outstanding men; |
17 וּמִן־בִּנְיָמִן גִּבֹּור חַיִל אֶלְיָדָע וְעִמֹּו נֹשְׁקֵי־קֶשֶׁת וּמָגֵן מָאתַיִם אָלֶף׃ ס | 17 That outstanding soldier, Eliada, represented Benjamin, and he had two hundred thousand menarmed with bow and shield; |
18 וְעַל־יָדֹו יְהֹוזָבָד וְעִמֹּו מֵאָה־וּשְׁמֹונִים אֶלֶף חֲלוּצֵי צָבָא׃ ס | 18 And under him Jehozabad, who had one hundred and eighty thousand equipped for war. |
19 אֵלֶּה הַמְשָׁרְתִים אֶת־הַמֶּלֶךְ מִלְּבַד אֲשֶׁר־נָתַן הַמֶּלֶךְ בְּעָרֵי הַמִּבְצָר בְּכָל־יְהוּדָה׃ פ | 19 These were in attendance on the king, apart from those whom the king had stationed in the fortifiedtowns al over Judah. |
