1 Foi nessa época que se levantou Matatias, filho de João, filho de Simeão, sacerdote da família de Joarib, que veio de Jerusalém se estabelecer em Modin.	1 In those days Mattathias, son of John, son of Simeon, a priest of the family of Joarib, left Jerusalem and settled in Modein.
2 Tinha ele cinco filhos: João, apelidado Gadis,	2 He had five sons: John, who was called Gaddi;
3 Simão, alcunhado Tasi,	3 Simon, who was called Thassi;
4 Judas, chamado Macabeu,	4 Judas, who was called Maccabeus;
5 Eleazar, cognominado Avarã, e Jônatas, chamado Afos.	5 Eleazar, who was called Avaran; and Jonathan, who was called Apphus.
6 Vendo as abominações praticadas em Judá e em Jerusalém, exclamou: Ai de mim, por que nasci eu, para ver a ruína de meu povo e da cidade santa,	6 When he saw the sacrileges that were being committed in Judah and in Jerusalem,
7 e ficar sem fazer nada, enquanto ela é entregue ao poder de seus inimigos	7 he said: "Woe is me! Why was I born to see the ruin of my people and the ruin of the holy city, and to sit idle while it is given into the hands of enemies, and the sanctuary into the hands of strangers?

11 Toda a sua glória desapareceu e, de livre que era, tornou-se escrava.	11 All her adornment has been taken away. From being free, she has become a slave.
12 Eis que tudo o que tínhamos de sagrado, de belo, de glorioso, foi assolado e profanado pelas nações.	12 We see our sanctuary and our beauty and our glory laid waste, And the Gentiles have defiled them!
13 Por que viver ainda?	13 Why are we still alive?"
14 Matatias e seus filhos rasgaram suas vestes, cobriram-se de sacos, e choravam amargamente.	14 Then Mattathias and his sons tore their garments, put on sackcloth, and mourned bitterly.
15 Sobrevieram enviados do rei a Modin, para impor a apostasia e obrigar a sacrificar.	15 The officers of the king in charge of enforcing the apostasy came to the city of Modein to organize the sacrifices.
16 Muitos dos israelitas uniram-se a eles, mas Matatias e seus filhos permaneceram firmes.	16 Many of Israel joined them, but Mattathias and his sons gathered in a group apart.
17 Em resposta disseram-lhe os que vinham da parte do rei: Possuis nesta cidade notável influência e consideração, teus irmãos e teus filhos te dão autoridade.	17 Then the officers of the king addressed Mattathias: "You are a leader, an honorable and great man in this city, supported by sons and kinsmen.
18 Vem, pois, como primeiro, executar a ordem do rei, como o fizeram todas as nações, os habitantes de Judá e os que ficaram em Jerusalém. Serás contado, tu e teus filhos, entre os amigos do rei; a ti e aos teus filhos o rei vos honrará, cumulando-vos de prata, de ouro e de presentes.	18 Come now, be the first to obey the king's command, as all the Gentiles and the men of Judah and those who are left in Jerusalem have done. Then you and your sons shall be numbered among the King's Friends, and shall be enriched with silver and gold and many gifts."
19 Matatias respondeu-lhes: Ainda mesmo que todas as nações que se acham no reino do rei o escutassem, de modo que todos renegassem a fé de seus pais e aquiescessem às suas ordens,	19 But Mattathias answered in a loud voice: "Although all the Gentiles in the king's realm obey him, so that each forsakes the religion of his fathers and consents to the king's orders,
20 eu, meus filhos e meus irmãos, perseveraremos na Aliança concluída por nossos antepassados.	20 yet I and my sons and my kinsmen will keep to the covenant of our fathers.
21 Que Deus nos preserve de abandonar a lei e os mandamentos!	21 God forbid that we should forsake the law and the commandments.
22 Não obedeceremos a essas ordens do rei e não nos desviaremos de nossa religião, nem para a direita, nem para a esquerda.	22 We will not obey the words of the king nor depart from our religion in the slightest degree."
23 Mal acabara de falar, eis que um judeu se adiantou para sacrificar no altar de Modin, à vista de todos, conforme as ordens do rei.	23 As he finished saying these words, a certain Jew came forward in the sight of all to offer sacrifice on the altar in Modein according to the king's order.
24 Viu-o Matatias e, no ardor de seu zelo, sentiu estremecerem-se suas entranhas. Num ímpeto de justa cólera arrojou-se e matou o homem no altar.	24 When Mattathias saw him, he was filled with zeal; his heart was moved and his just fury was aroused; he sprang forward and killed him upon the altar.
25 Matou ao mesmo tempo o oficial incumbido da ordem de sacrificar e demoliu o altar.	25 At the same time, he also killed the messenger of the king who was forcing them to sacrifice, and he tore down the altar.
26 Com semelhante gesto mostrou ele seu amor pela lei, como agiu Finéias a respeito de Zamri, filho de Salum.	26 Thus he showed his zeal for the law, just as Phinehas did with Zimri, son of Salu.
27 Em altos brados Matatias elevou a voz então na cidade: Quem for fiel à lei e permanecer firme na Aliança, saia e siga-me.	27 Then Mattathias went through the city shouting, "Let everyone who is zealous for the law and who stands by the covenant follow after me!"
28 Assim, com seus filhos, fugiu em direção às montanhas, abandonando todos os seus bens na cidade.	28 Thereupon he fled to the mountains with his sons, leaving behind in the city all their possessions.
29 Então, uma grande parte dos que procuravam a lei e a justiça, encaminhou-se para o deserto.	29 Many who sought to live according to righteousness and religious custom went out into the desert to settle there,
30 Ali refugiaram-se, com seus filhos, suas mulheres e seus rebanhos, porque a perseguição se encarniçava contra eles.	30 they and their sons, their wives and their cattle, because misfortunes pressed so hard on them.
31 Contaram aos oficiais do rei e às forças acantonadas em Jerusalém, na cidadela de Davi, que certo número de judeus, culpáveis de terem transgredido a ordem real, havia descido ao deserto, para ali se ocultar e que muitos se haviam precipitado em seu seguimento.	31 It was reported to the officers and soldiers of the king who were in the City of David, in Jerusalem, that certain men who had flouted the king's order had gone out to the hiding places in the desert.
32 Os sírios arremessaram-se ao encalço deles e os alcançaram, depois se prepararam para agredi-los no dia de sábado.	32 Many hurried out after them, and having caught up with them, camped opposite and prepared to attack them on the sabbath.
33 Isso basta, agora, gritaram-lhes eles, saí, obedecei à ordem do rei, e vivereis.	33 "Enough of this!" the pursuers said to them. "Come out and obey the king's command, and your lives will be spared."
34 Não sairemos, replicaram os judeus, e nem obedeceremos ao rei, com a profanação do dia de sábado.	34 But they replied, "We will not come out, nor will we obey the king's command to profane the sabbath."
35 Instantaneamente os sírios travaram combate contra eles;	35 Then the enemy attacked them at once;
36 mas eles não responderam, não atiraram uma pedra e não barricaram seu refúgio.	36 but they did not retaliate; they neither threw stones, nor blocked up their own hiding places.
37 Que morramos todos inocentes! O céu e a terra nos servirão de testemunha, de que nos matais injustamente.	37 They said, "Let us all die without reproach; heaven and earth are our witnesses that you destroy us unjustly."
38 E foi assim que os inimigos se lançaram sobre eles em dia de sábado, morrendo eles, suas mulheres e seus filhos, com seu gado, em número de mil.	38 So the officers and soldiers attacked them on the sabbath, and they died with their wives, their children and their cattle, to the number of a thousand persons.
39 Matatias e seus amigos o souberam e comoveram-se muito;	39 When Mattathias and his friends heard of it, they mourned deeply for them.
40 mas disseram uns aos outros: Se todos nós agirmos como nossos irmãos, e se não pelejarmos contra os estrangeiros para pormos a salvo nossas vidas e nossas leis, exterminar-nos-ão bem depressa da terra.	40 "If we all do as our kinsmen have done," they said to one another, "and do not fight against the Gentiles for our lives and our traditions, they will soon destroy us from the earth."
41 Tomaram, pois, naquele dia a seguinte resolução: Mesmo que nos ataquem em dia de sábado, pugnaremos contra eles e não nos deixaremos matar a todos nós, como o fizeram nossos irmãos no seu esconderijo.	41 On that day they came to this decision: "Let us fight against anyone who attacks us on the sabbath, so that we may not all die as our kinsmen died in the hiding places."
42 Então se ajuntou a eles o grupo dos judeus assideus, particularmente valentes em Israel, apegados todos à lei;	42 Then they were joined by a group of Hasideans, valiant Israelites, all of them devout followers of the law.
43 e todos os que fugiam das perseguições se ajuntaram do mesmo modo a eles e os reforçaram.	43 And all those who were fleeing from the disaster joined them and supported them.
44 Formaram, pois, um exército e na sua ira e indignação massacraram certo número de prevaricadores e de traidores da lei; os outros procuraram refúgio junto aos estrangeiros.	44 They gathered an army and struck down sinners in their anger and lawbreakers in their wrath, and the survivors fled to the Gentiles for safety.
45 Assim Matatias e seus amigos percorreram o país, destruíram os altares e	45 Mattathias and his friends went about and tore down the pagan altars;
46 circuncidaram à força as crianças, ainda incircuncisas nas fronteiras de Israel,	46 they also enforced circumcision for any uncircumcised boys whom they found in the territory of Israel.
47 e perseguiram os sírios orgulhosos. Sua empresa alcançou bom êxito.	47 They put to flight the arrogant, and the work prospered in their hands.
48 Arrancaram a lei do poder dos gentios e dos reis, e não permitiram que prevalecesse o mal.	48 They saved the law from the hands of the Gentiles and of the kings and did not let the sinner triumph.
49 Ora, chegou para Matatias o dia de sua morte e ele disse a seus filhos: O que domina até este momento é o orgulho, o ódio, a desordem e a cólera.	49 When the time came for Mattathias to die, he said to his sons: "Arrogance and scorn have now grown strong; it is a time of disaster and violent anger.
50 Sede, pois, agora, meus filhos, os defensores da lei e dai vossa vida pela Aliança de vossos pais.	50 Therefore, my sons, be zealous for the law and give your lives for the covenant of our fathers.
51 Recordai-vos dos feitos de vossos maiores em seu tempo, e merecereis uma grande glória e um nome eterno.	51 "Remember the deeds that our fathers did in their times, and you shall win great glory and an everlasting name.
52 Porventura, não foi na prova que Abraão foi achado fiel? E não lhe foi isso imputado em justiça?	52 Was not Abraham found faithful in trial, and it was reputed to him as uprightness?
53 José observou os mandamentos na sua desgraça e veio a ser o senhor do Egito.	53 Joseph, when in distress, kept the commandment, and he became master of Egypt.
54 Finéias, nosso antepassado, por ter sido inflamado de zelo, recebeu a promessa de um perpétuo sacerdócio.	54 Phinehas our father, for his burning zeal, received the covenant of an everlasting priesthood.
55 Josué, cumprindo a palavra de Deus, veio a ser juiz em Israel.	55 Joshua, for executing his commission, became a judge in Israel.
56 Caleb deu testemunho na assembléia e herdou a terra.	56 Caleb, for bearing witness before the assembly, received an inheritance in the land.
57 Por todos os séculos, em vista de sua piedade, mereceu Davi o trono real.	57 David, for his piety, received as a heritage a throne of everlasting royalty.
58 Porque ardia em zelo pela lei, Elias foi arrebatado ao céu.	58 Elijah, for his burning zeal for the law, was taken up to heaven.
59 Ananias, Azarias e Mizael foram salvos das chamas por terem tido fé.	59 Hananiah, Azariah and Mishael, for their faith, were saved from the fire.
60 Daniel, na sua retidão, foi livre da boca dos leões.	60 Daniel, for his innocence, was delivered from the jaws of lions.
61 Recordai-vos assim, de geração em geração, de que todos os que esperam em Deus não desfalecem.	61 And so, consider this from generation to generation, that none who hope in him shall fail in strength.
62 Não receeis as ameaças do pecador, porque sua glória chega à lama e aos vermes:	62 Do not fear the words of a sinful man, for his glory ends in corruption and worms.
63 hoje ele se eleva e amanhã desaparece, porque tornará ao pó, e seus planos são frustrados.	63 Today he is exalted, and tomorrow he is not to be found, because he has returned to his dust, and his schemes have perished.
64 Quanto a vós, meus filhos, sede corajosos e destemidos em observar a lei, porque por ela chegareis à glória.	64 Children! be courageous and strong in keeping the law, for by it you shall be glorified.
65 Aqui tendes Simão, irmão vosso, eu sei que ele é homem de conselho, ouvi-o sempre e será para vós um pai.	65 "Here is your brother Simeon who I know is a wise man; listen to him always, and he will be a father to you.
66 Judas Macabeu, bravo desde a juventude: será o general do exército e dirigirá a guerra contra os gentios.	66 And Judas Maccabeus, a warrior from his youth, shall be the leader of your army and direct the war against the nations.
67 Atraireis a vós todos os que observam a lei e vingareis vosso povo.	67 You shall also gather about you all who observe the law, and you shall avenge the wrongs of your people.
68 Pagai aos gentios o que nos fizeram e atendei aos preceitos da lei.	68 Pay back the Gentiles what they deserve, and observe the precepts of the law."
69 Depois disso abençoou-os e foi unir-se aos seus pais.	69 Then he blessed them, and he was united with his fathers.
70 Morreu no ano cento e quarenta e seis. Seus filhos sepultaram-no em Modin, entre as sepulturas de seus antepassados, e todo o Israel o chorou dolorosamente.	70 He died in the year one hundred and forty-six, and was buried in the tombs of his fathers in Modein, and all Israel mourned him greatly.
