LA SACRA BIBBIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Queste sono le popolazioni che il Signore lasciò per porre alla prova, per mezzo di loro, tutti quegli Israeliti che non avevano conosciuto le guerre combattute contro i Cananei.	1 These are the nations which Yahweh al owed to remain, by their means to put all those Israelites to thetest who had not experienced any of the Canaanite wars
2 Egli fece questo solo allo scopo di ammaestrare quelle generazioni d'Israeliti che non avevano preso parte alle guerre contro i Cananei, per insegnare loro a combattere.	2 (this was only to instruct the Israelites' descendants, to teach them the art of war, those at least whohad not experienced it previously):
3 Erano i cinque prìncipi dei Filistei, tutti i Cananei, i Sidoni, gli Evei che abitavano sulle montagne del Libano, dal monte di Baal-Ermon fino all'ingresso di Camat.	3 the five chiefs of the Philistines, al the Canaanites, the Sidonians, and the Hittites who lived in therange of the Lebanon, from the uplands of Baal-Hermon to the Pass of Hamath.
4 Queste popolazioni restarono per mettere alla prova gli Israeliti, per vedere se essi avrebbero osservato i comandamenti che il Signore aveva dato ai loro padri per mezzo di Mosè.	4 They were used to put Israel to the test and see if they would keep the orders which Yahweh had giventheir ancestors through Moses.
5 Così gli Israeliti restarono in mezzo ai Cananei, agli Hittiti, agli Amorrei, ai Perizziti, agli Evei e ai Gebusei;	5 The Israelites lived among the Canaanites, Hittites and Amorites, the Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites;
6 presero in moglie le loro figlie, dettero le proprie in moglie ai loro figli e prestarono culto ai loro dèi.	6 they married their daughters, they gave their own sons to their daughters and they served their gods.
7 Gli Israeliti fecero ciò che è male agli occhi del Signore; dimenticarono il Signore, loro Dio, e servirono i Baal e le Asere.	7 The Israelites did what is evil in Yahweh's eyes. They forgot Yahweh their God and served Baals andAsherahs.
8 Perciò l'ira del Signore si accese contro Israele e lo mise nelle mani di Cusan-Risataim, re del Paese dei due fiumi. Gli Israeliti furono servi di Cusan-Risataim per otto anni.	8 Then Yahweh's anger blazed out against Israel: he handed them over to Cushan-Rishathaim king ofEdom, and the Israelites were enslaved to Cushan-Rishathaim for eight years.
9 Poi gli Israeliti alzarono il loro grido al Signore, il quale suscitò loro un salvatore che li liberò: fu Otniel, figlio di Kenaz, fratello minore di Caleb.	9 The Israelites then cried to Yahweh and Yahweh raised for the Israelites a deliverer who rescued them,Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother.
10 Lo spirito del Signore fu sopra di lui, cosicché egli poté salvare Israele: quando Otniel si mosse per combattere, il Signore dette nelle sue mani Cusan-Risataim, re di Aram, che fu vinto.	10 The spirit of Yahweh was on him; he became judge in Israel and set out for war. Yahweh deliveredCushan-Rishathaim king of Edom into his hands, and he triumphed over Cushan- Rishathaim.
11 La regione ebbe pace per quarant'anni, fin quando morì Otniel, figlio di Kenaz.	11 The country then had peace for forty years. Othniel son of Kenaz then died.
12 Ma gli Israeliti continuarono a commettere ciò che è male agli occhi del Signore; perciò questi rese Eglon, re di Moab, più potente d'Israele, perché Israele aveva commesso ciò che è male agli occhi del Signore.	12 Again the Israelites began doing what is evil in Yahweh's eyes, and Yahweh strengthened Eglon kingof Moab against Israel, since they were doing what is evil in Yahweh's eyes.
13 Eglon, alleatosi con gli Ammoniti e con gli Amaleciti, mosse guerra ad Israele e lo sconfisse: gli alleati occuparono la Città delle Palme cacciandone gli Israeliti,	13 Eglon in conjunction with the sons of Ammon and Amalek marched on Israel, beat them and capturedthe City of Palm Trees.
14 i quali restarono sottomessi a Eglon, re di Moab, per diciotto anni.	14 The Israelites were enslaved to Eglon king of Moab for eighteen years.
15 Poi gli Israeliti alzarono il loro grido al Signore, il quale suscitò loro un salvatore: Eud, figlio di Ghera, della tribù di Beniamino, che era ambidestro. Gli Israeliti inviarono per mezzo suo il tributo a Eglon, re di Moab.	15 The Israelites then cried to Yahweh, and Yahweh raised a deliverer for them, Ehud son of Gera, aBenjaminite; he was left-handed. The Israelites appointed him to take their tribute to Eglon king of Moab.
16 Eud si fece una spada a due tagli lunga un cubito, che nascose sotto la veste, sul fianco destro.	16 Ehud made himself a dagger -- it was double-edged and a foot long -- and strapped it under hisclothes on his right thigh.
17 Consegnò poi il tributo a Eglon, re di Moab, che era uomo molto pingue.	17 He presented the tribute to Eglon king of Moab. This Eglon was a very fat man.
18 Quando Eud ebbe consegnato il tributo, congedò i portatori	18 Having presented the tribute, Ehud sent away the men who had been carrying it;
19 ed egli tornò indietro dal luogo detto Idoli, che è presso Gàlgala, e fece dire al re che aveva un segreto per lui. Il re allora impose silenzio a tutti gli astanti, che uscirono dalla sua presenza.	19 but he himself, on reaching the Idols which are near Gilgal, went back and said, 'I have a secretmessage for you, O king.' The king commanded silence, and al his attendants withdrew.
20 Eud si accostò allora al re che si trovava nella stanza di riposo al piano superiore, dove stava solo. Gli disse Eud: "Ho una parola di Dio per te". L'altro allora si alzò da sedere;	20 Ehud went up to him; he was sitting in his private room upstairs, where it was cool. Ehud said to him, 'Ihave a message from God for you, O king.' The latter immediately rose from his seat.
21 Eud, portata la mano sinistra al fianco destro, sguainò la spada e la conficcò nel ventre del re.	21 Then Ehud, reaching with his left hand, drew the dagger he was carrying on his right thigh and thrust itinto the king's belly.
22 Dietro alla lama vi penetrò anche l'elsa e il grasso si richiuse dietro alla lama, perché Eud non ritrasse la spada dal ventre del re. La lama forò gli intestini.	22 The hilt too went in after the blade, and the fat closed over the blade, since Ehud did not pul thedagger out of his bel y again.
23 Eud uscì nel portico, dopo aver chiuso dietro di sé le porte della stanza, mettendo il chiavistello.	23 Ehud went out through the privies, having shut and bolted the doors of the upstairs room behind him.
24 Quando egli fu uscito, i servi del re si accostarono alla stanza di riposo e vedendo che le porte erano serrate, pensarono che il re stesse coprendosi i piedi nella stanza di riposo	24 When he had gone, the servants came back and looked; the doors of the upstairs room were bolted.They thought, 'He is probably covering his feet in the inner part of the cool room.'
25 e attesero fino ad essere presi dal senso del disagio, ma nessuno aveva il coraggio di aprire le porte della stanza. Infine presero la chiave e aprirono: il loro signore giaceva a terra morto.	25 They waited until they became embarrassed, but stil he did not open the doors of the upstairs room.Eventual y, they took the key and opened the door; and there lay their master, dead, on the ground.
26 Mentre i servi aspettavano, Eud era fuggito. Si mise in salvo a Seira passando dagli Idoli.	26 Meanwhile, Ehud had got away, passed the Idols and made good his escape to safety in Seirah.
27 Quando egli giunse fra le montagne di Efraim, suonò il corno: gli Israeliti scesero dai monti per unirsi a lui, che si mise alla loro testa.	27 Once there, he sounded the horn in the highlands of Ephraim, and the Israelites came down from thehil s with him at their head.
28 Disse loro: "Seguitemi; ché il Signore darà in mano vostra i Moabiti, i vostri nemici". Si mossero ai suoi ordini, occuparono i guadi del Giordano che appartenevano ai Moabiti e non fecero passare nessuno.	28 And he said to them, 'Follow me, because Yahweh has delivered your enemy Moab into your hands.'So they followed him, seized the fords of the Jordan against Moab and al owed no one to cross.
29 In quell'occasione gli Israeliti sconfissero i Moabiti, uccidendo circa diecimila uomini, tutti forti e valorosi senza che ne sfuggisse alcuno.	29 On that occasion they beat the Moabites, some ten thousand men, all tough and seasoned fighters,and not one escaped.
30 Quel giorno Moab fu umiliato sotto la mano di Israele. La regione ebbe pace per ottant'anni.	30 That day Moab was humbled under the hand of Israel, and the country had peace for eighty years.
31 Dopo di lui ci fu Samgar, figlio di Anat, il quale sconfisse i Filistei uccidendone seicento con un pungolo da buoi. Anche Samgar salvò Israele.	31 After him came Shamgar son of Anath. He routed six hundred of the Philistines with an ox-goad; hetoo was a deliverer of Israel.
