1 Con lo sguardo fisso al sinedrio, Paolo disse: "Fratelli, io mi sono comportato davanti a Dio in perfetta buona coscienza fino a questo giorno".	1 And Paul looking upon the council, said: Men, brethren, I have conversed with all good conscience before God until this present day.
2 Ma il sommo sacerdote Anania diede ordine agli assistenti di percuoterlo sulla bocca.	2 And the high priest Ananias commanded them that stood by him to strike him on the mouth.
3 Allora Paolo gli disse: "Dio sta per percuotere te, muro imbiancato! Tu sei assiso per giudicarmi secondo la legge e violi la legge ordinando di percuotermi?".	3 Then Paul said to him: God shall strike thee, thou whited wall. For sittest thou to judge me according to the law, and contrary to the law commandest me to be struck?
4 Ma gli assistenti dissero: "Tu insulti il sommo sacerdote di Dio?".	4 And they that stood by said: Dost thou revile the high priest of God?
5 Paolo rispose: "Non sapevo, fratelli, che è sommo sacerdote. E' scritto infatti: Non parlerai male di un capo del tuo popolo".	5 And Paul said: I knew not, brethren, that he is the high priest. For it is written: Thou shalt not speak evil of the prince of thy people.
6 Paolo sapeva che una parte dell'assemblea era composta di sadducei e un'altra di farisei, e gridò nel sinedrio: "Fratelli, io sono fariseo, figlio di farisei: io sono sotto giudizio a motivo della speranza nella risurrezione dei morti".	6 And Paul knowing that the one part were Sadducees, and the other Pharisees, cried out in the council: Men, brethren, I am a Pharisee, the son of Pharisees: concerning the hope and resurrection of the dead I am called in question.
7 Appena dette queste parole scoppiò un tafferuglio tra farisei e sadducei, e l'assemblea si divise.	7 And when he had so said, there arose a dissension between the Pharisees and the Sadducees; and the multitude was divided.
8 I sadducei infatti dicono che non c'è risurrezione né angelo né spirito, mentre i farisei ammettono tutte queste cose.	8 For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, neither angel, nor spirit: but the Pharisees confess both.
9 Vi fu un gran gridare. Alcuni scribi del partito dei farisei si alzarono a battagliare dicendo: "Non troviamo alcun male in quest'uomo: e se uno spirito gli avesse parlato, oppure un angelo?".	9 And there arose a great cry. And some of the Pharisees rising up, strove, saying: We find no evil in this man. What if a spirit hath spoken to him, or an angel?
10 Aggravandosi il tumulto, il tribuno, temendo che Paolo fosse da quelli fatto a pezzi, comandò alla truppa di scendere e portarlo via di mezzo a loro e ricondurlo in caserma.	10 And when there arose a great dissension, the tribune fearing lest Paul should be pulled in pieces by them, commanded the soldiers to go down, and to take him by force from among them, and to bring him into the castle.
11 La notte seguente il Signore gli si avvicinò e gli disse: "Coraggio! Come hai reso testimonianza alla mia causa in Gerusalemme, così devi testimoniare anche a Roma".	11 And the night following the Lord standing by him, said: Be constant; for as thou hast testified of me in Jerusalem, so must thou bear witness also at Rome.
12 Fattosi giorno, i Giudei fecero una congiura e si obbligarono con giuramento a non mangiare né bere fino a che non avessero ucciso Paolo.	12 And when day was come, some of the Jews gathered together, and bound themselves under a curse, saying, that they would neither eat, nor drink, till they killed Paul.
13 Erano più di quaranta quelli che avevano fatto questa congiura.	13 And they were more than forty men that had made this conspiracy.
14 Essi si presentarono ai sommi sacerdoti e agli anziani e dissero: "Con giuramento ci siamo obbligati a non prendere più alcun cibo, finché non abbiamo ucciso Paolo.	14 Who came to the chief priests and the ancients, and said: We have bound ourselves under a great curse that we will eat nothing till we have slain Paul.
15 Or dunque, voi comparite di fronte al tribuno col sinedrio, affinché lo conduca da voi, come per voler esaminare più accuratamente il suo caso. E noi, prima che si avvicini, ci teniamo pronti a ucciderlo".	15 Now therefore do you with the council signify to the tribune, that he bring him forth to you, as if you meant to know something more certain touching him. And we, before he come near, are ready to kill him.
16 Ma il figlio della sorella di Paolo venne a sapere dell'insidia e, andato alla caserma, vi entrò e ne diede notizia a Paolo.	16 Which when Paul's sister's son had heard, of their lying in wait, he came and entered into the castle and told Paul.
17 Paolo, fatto chiamare uno dei centurioni, disse: "Conduci questo giovane dal tribuno, perché ha qualcosa da comunicargli".	17 And Paul, calling to him one of the centurions, said: Bring this young man to the tribune, for he hath some thing to tell him.
18 Quegli lo prese e lo condusse dal tribuno e disse: "Il prigioniero Paolo mi ha fatto chiamare e ha pregato che questo giovane ti fosse condotto, perché ha qualcosa da dirti".	18 And he taking him, brought him to the tribune, and said: Paul, the prisoner, desired me to bring this young man unto thee, who hath some thing to say to thee.
19 Presolo per la mano, il tribuno lo condusse in disparte e lo interrogò: "Che cos'hai da comunicarmi?".	19 And the tribune taking him by the hand, went aside with him privately, and asked him: What is it that thou hast to tell me?
20 Egli disse che i Giudei si erano accordati per domandargli che il giorno appresso conducesse Paolo nel sinedrio, col pretesto di una interrogazione più accurata sul suo caso.	20 And he said: The Jews have agreed to desire thee, that thou wouldst bring forth Paul to morrow into the council, as if they meant to inquire some thing more certain touching him.
21 "Tu dunque non fidarti di essi: infatti più di quaranta uomini dei loro gli tendono insidie e si sono obbligati con giuramento a non mangiare né bere, finché non l'abbiano ucciso. Ora si tengono pronti, in attesa che tu dica di sì".	21 But do not thou give credit to them; for there lie in wait for him more than forty men of them, who have bound themselves by oath neither to eat, nor to drink, till they have killed him: and they are now ready, looking for a promise from thee.
22 Il tribuno congedò il giovane ordinandogli: "Non dire a nessuno che mi hai rivelato queste cose".	22 The tribune therefore dismissed the young man, charging him that he should tell no man, that he had made known these things unto him.
23 Chiamati poi due dei centurioni, disse: "Preparatemi duecento soldati perché vadano fino a Cesarea, e settanta cavalieri e duecento lancieri pronti a partire tre ore dopo il tramonto.	23 Then having called two centurions, he said to them: Make ready two hundred soldiers to go as far as Caesarea, and seventy horsemen, and two hundred spearmen for the third hour of the night:
24 Preparate anche delle cavalcature per farvi salire Paolo e condurlo in salvo presso il governatore Felice".	24 And provide beasts, that they may set Paul on, and bring him safe to Felix the governor.
25 Scrisse anche una lettera di questo tenore:	25 (For he feared lest perhaps the Jews might take him away by force and kill him, and he should afterwards be slandered, as if he was to take money.) And he wrote a letter after this manner:
26 "Claudio Lisia a sua eccellenza il governatore Felice, salute.	26 Claudius Lysias to the most excellent governor, Felix, greeting.
27 Quest'uomo era stato preso dai Giudei. Stavano per ucciderlo quando sopraggiunsi con la truppa e lo liberai, avendo saputo che era cittadino romano.	27 This man being taken by the Jews, and ready to be killed by them, I rescued coming in with an army, understanding that he is a Roman:
28 Volendo poi sapere la ragione per cui lo accusavano, lo condussi nel loro sinedrio,	28 And meaning to know the cause which they objected unto him, I brought him forth into their council.
29 e vidi che lo accusavano per questioni controverse della loro legge, ma che non c'era alcuna imputazione a suo carico che comportasse la morte o le catene.	29 Whom I found to be accused concerning questions of their law; but having nothing laid to his charge worthy of death or of bands.
30 Essendo poi stato avvertito che si stava tramando una congiura contro quest'uomo, subito te l'ho mandato, facendo insieme sapere agli accusatori di deporre contro di lui davanti a te. Sta' bene!".	30 And when I was told of ambushes that they had prepared for him, I sent him to thee, signifying also to his accusers to plead before thee. Farewell.
31 I soldati, secondo l'ordine ricevuto, presero in consegna Paolo e lo condussero di notte ad Antipàtride.	31 Then the soldiers, according as it was commanded them, taking Paul, brought him by night to Antipatris.
32 Il giorno dopo se ne ritornarono alla caserma, lasciando che i cavalieri proseguissero con lui.	32 And the next day, leaving the horsemen to go with him, they returned to the castle.
33 Entrati a Cesarea consegnarono la lettera al governatore e gli presentarono Paolo.	33 Who, when they were come to Caesarea, and had delivered the letter to the governor, did also present Paul before him.
34 Avendola letta, lo interrogò di quale provincia fosse. Saputo che era della Cilicia,	34 And when he had read it, and had asked of what province he was, and understood that he was of Cilicia;
35 gli disse: "Ti ascolterò quando saranno giunti anche i tuoi accusatori". E ordinò che fosse custodito nel pretorio di Erode.	35 I will hear thee, said he, when thy accusers come. And he commanded him to be kept in Herod's judgment hall.
