Giona 1

LA SACRA BIBBIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 La parola del Signore fu rivolta a Giona, figlio di Amittai. Gli disse:	1 The word of Yahweh was addressed to Jonah son of Amittai:
2 "Su, va' nella grande città di Ninive e proclama contro di essa che la loro malvagità è salita fino a me!".	2 'Up!' he said, 'Go to Nineveh, the great city, and proclaim to them that their wickedness has forced itselfupon me.'
3 Giona partì, ma per fuggire a Tarsis, lontano dalla presenza del Signore. Scese a Giaffa e, trovata una nave che partiva per Tarsis, pagò la sua quota e vi salì per andare con loro a Tarsis, lontano dalla presenza del Signore.	3 Jonah set about running away from Yahweh, and going to Tarshish. He went down to Jaffa and found aship bound for Tarshish; he paid his fare and boarded it, to go with them to Tarshish, to get away from Yahweh.
4 Il Signore allora lanciò un forte vento sul mare e si levò una grande tempesta, cosicché la nave minacciava di sfasciarsi.	4 But Yahweh threw a hurricane at the sea, and there was such a great storm at sea that the shipthreatened to break up.
5 I marinai, spaventati, si misero a gridare ciascuno al suo dio e lanciarono in mare gli oggetti che erano sulla nave per alleggerirla. Giona invece era sceso nelle parti più appartate della nave e, adagiatosi, dormiva profondamente.	5 The sailors took fright, and each of them called on his own god, and to lighten the ship they threw thecargo overboard. Jonah, however, had gone below, had lain down in the hold and was fast asleep,
6 Il capo della ciurma, avvicinatosi a lui, gli disse: "Perché dormi? A'lzati, invoca il tuo Dio, se mai Dio si prenda cura di noi e non abbiamo a morire!".	6 when the boatswain went up to him and said, 'What do you mean by sleeping? Get up! Call on yourgod! Perhaps he wil spare us a thought and not leave us to die.'
7 Intanto si dicevano l'un l'altro: "Venite, gettiamo le sorti per conoscere a causa di chi ci è venuta questa disgrazia!". Gettarono le sorti e la sorte cadde su Giona.	7 Then they said to each other, 'Come on, let us draw lots to find out who is to blame for bringing us thisbad luck.' So they cast lots, and the lot pointed to Jonah.
8 Allora gli domandarono: "Svelaci qual è la tua destinazione e da dove vieni; qual è il tuo paese e qual è il tuo popolo".	8 Then they said to him, 'Tel us, what is your business? Where do you come from? What is your country?What is your nationality?'
9 Rispose loro: "Io sono un ebreo e temo il Signore, Dio del cielo, che ha fatto il mare e la terra!".	9 He replied, 'I am a Hebrew, and I worship Yahweh, God of Heaven, who made both sea and dry land.'
10 Quegli uomini ebbero gran timore e gli domandarono: "Che hai fatto?". Infatti erano venuti a sapere che egli fuggiva lontano dalla presenza del Signore, come aveva svelato loro.	10 The sailors were seized with terror at this and said, 'Why ever did you do this?' since they knew that hewas trying to escape from Yahweh, because he had told them so.
11 Gli domandarono: "Che dobbiamo farti affinché il mare si calmi sopra di noi?". Il mare infatti diventava sempre più furioso.	11 They then said, 'What are we to do with you, to make the sea calm down for us?' For the sea wasgrowing rougher and rougher.
12 Rispose loro: "Prendetemi e gettatemi in mare. Così il mare si calmerà sopra di voi! Riconosco infatti che per causa mia è venuta su di voi questa grande tempesta!".	12 He replied, 'Take me and throw me into the sea, and then it wil calm down for you. I know it is my faultthat this great storm has struck you.'
13 Essi tentarono di ritornare a terra, ma invano, perché il mare diventava sempre più furioso sopra di loro.	13 The sailors rowed hard in an effort to reach the shore, but in vain, since the sea was growing rougherand rougher.
14 Allora invocarono il Signore e dissero: "Deh, Signore! Che non abbiamo a perire noi a causa di quest'uomo e non far ricadere su di noi sangue innocente! Tu infatti, o Signore, hai agito secondo il tuo beneplacito!".	14 So at last they cal ed on Yahweh and said, 'O, Yahweh, do not let us perish for the sake of this man'slife, and do not hold us responsible for causing an innocent man's death; for you, Yahweh, have acted as yousaw fit.'
15 Poi presero Giona e lo gettarono in mare; allora il mare si calmò dal suo sdegno.	15 And taking hold of Jonah they threw him into the sea; and the sea stopped raging.
16 Poi quegli uomini, presi da un grande timore del Signore, offrirono un sacrificio al Signore e fecero voti.	16 At this, the men were seized with dread of Yahweh; they offered a sacrifice to Yahweh and made vowsto him.
