LA SACRA BIBBIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Per questo furono giustamente castigati con le medesime cose e furono tormentati con una moltitudine di bestie.	1 Thus they were appropriately punished by similar creatures and tormented by swarms of vermin.
2 Invece di questo castigo, beneficasti il tuo popolo; per soddisfarne l'ardente desiderio, preparasti un cibo di gusto meraviglioso, le quaglie,	2 In contrast to this punishment, you did your people a kindness and, to satisfy their sharp appetite,provided quails -- a luscious rarity -- for them to eat.
3 perché quelli che desideravano il cibo, per il disgusto delle bestie inviate loro contro, perdessero anche l'appetito naturale, mentre questi, divenuti bisognosi per breve tempo, gustassero un cibo meraviglioso.	3 Thus the Egyptians, at the repulsive sight of the creatures sent against them, were to find that, thoughthey longed for food, they had lost their natural appetite; whereas your own people, after a short privation, wereto have a rare relish for their portion.
4 Veramente era necessario che su quei tiranni sopravvenisse una inevitabile indigenza, ma a questi solo che si mostrasse come erano tormentati i loro nemici.	4 Inevitable that relentless want should seize on the former oppressors; enough for your people to beshown how their enemies were being tortured.
5 Quando infatti sopravvenne su di loro la furia terribile delle belve ed erano sterminati dai morsi di velenosi serpenti, la tua ira non durò sino alla fine.	5 Even when the fearful rage of wild animals overtook them and they were perishing from the bites ofwrithing snakes, your retribution did not continue to the end.
6 A scopo di ammonizione e per breve tempo furono tormentati, avendo avuto un segno di salvezza, perché conservassero il ricordo del precetto della tua legge.	6 Affliction struck them briefly, by way of warning, and they had a saving token to remind them of thecommandment of your Law,
7 Infatti chi vi si volgeva, non era salvato da ciò che guardava, ma da te, salvatore di tutti.	7 for whoever turned to it was saved, not by what he looked at, but by you, the Saviour of all.
8 Anche con questo persuadesti i nostri nemici che sei tu colui che libera da ogni male.	8 And by such means you proved to our enemies that you are the one who delivers from every evil;
9 Veramente li uccisero i morsi di cavallette e di mosche, né si trovò un rimedio per la loro vita, perché meritavano di essere castigati da tali bestie;	9 for them, the bites of locusts and flies proved fatal and no remedy could be found to save their lives,since they deserved to be punished by such creatures.
10 ma i denti di serpenti velenosi non vinsero i tuoi figli, poiché intervenne la tua misericordia e li guarì.	10 But your children, not even the fangs of poisonous snakes could bring them down; for your mercycame to their help and cured them.
11 Perché conservassero il ricordo delle tue parole, erano puniti e subito salvati, per timore che, caduti in un profondo oblio, fossero esclusi dai tuoi benefici.	11 One sting -- how quickly healed!-to remind them of your pronouncements rather than that, by sinkinginto deep forgetfulness, they should be cut off from your kindness.
12 Non li guarì né erba né unguento, ma la tua parola, Signore, che tutto sana.	12 No herb, no poultice cured them, but your al -healing word, Lord.
13 Tu infatti hai potere sulla vita e sulla morte, conduci alle porte degl'inferi e riconduci indietro.	13 Yes, you are the one with power over life and death, bringing to the gates of Hades and back again.
14 L'uomo nella sua malvagità può uccidere, ma non può richiamare lo spirito che è uscito, né liberare un'anima che è stata rinchiusa.	14 A human being out of malice may put to death, but cannot bring the departed spirit back or free thesoul that Hades has once received.
15 E' impossibile sfuggire alla tua mano.	15 It is not possible to escape your hand.
16 Gli empi, che rifiutavano di conoscerti, furono puniti con la forza del tuo braccio, perseguitati da insolite piogge, da grandine e da uragani spaventosi e consumati dal fuoco.	16 The godless who refused to acknowledge you were scourged by the strength of your arm, pursued byno ordinary rains, hail and unrelenting downpours, and consumed by fire.
17 E, cosa mirabile, nell'acqua che tutto spegne, il fuoco prendeva maggior vigore, poiché difensore dei giusti è l'universo.	17 Even more wonderful, in the water -- which quenches al -- the fire raged fiercer than ever; for theelements fight for the upright.
18 Talvolta veramente la fiamma si mitigava per non consumare gli animali inviati contro gli empi, ma perché essi, a tal vista, comprendessero che erano incalzati dal giudizio di Dio;	18 At one moment, the fire would die down, to avoid consuming the animals sent against the godlessand to make clear to them by that sight, that the sentence of God was pursuing them;
19 altre volte anche in mezzo all'acqua la fiamma bruciava oltre la potenza del fuoco, per distruggere i prodotti di una terra iniqua.	19 at another, in the very heart of the water, it would burn more fiercely than fire to ruin the produce of awicked land.
20 Al contrario nutristi il tuo popolo con il cibo degli angeli e preparasti per loro dal cielo un pane già pronto, senza fatica, capace di procurare ogni delizia e di soddisfare ogni gusto.	20 How differently with your people! You gave them the food of angels, from heaven untiringly providingthem bread already prepared, containing every delight, to satisfy every taste.
21 Veramente quel tuo sostentamento manifestava la tua dolcezza per i figli, adattandosi al desiderio di chi ne mangiava, si mutava in ciò che uno voleva.	21 And the substance you gave showed your sweetness towards your children, for, conforming to thetaste of whoever ate it, it transformed itself into what each eater wished.
22 Neve e ghiaccio resistevano al fuoco e non si consumavano, perché conoscessero che il fuoco, divampante tra la grandine e sfolgorante tra la pioggia, distruggeva i frutti dei nemici.	22 Snow and ice endured the fire, without melting; this was to show them that, to destroy the harvests oftheir enemies, fire would burn even in hail and flare in fal ing rain,
23 Ma questo, al contrario, per nutrire i giusti, dimenticava anche la propria potenza.	23 whereas, on the other hand, it would even forget its own strength in the service of feeding the upright.
24 La creazione, infatti, servendo a te che l'hai fatta, si eccita in punizione contro gli ingiusti e si distende a beneficio di quanti confidano in te.	24 For the creation, being at the service of you, its Creator, tautens to punish the wicked and slackensfor the benefit of those who trust in you.
25 Per questo anche allora, piegandosi a tutto, serviva al tuo dono che tutto nutre, secondo il desiderio di quanti erano nel bisogno,	25 And this is why, by changing into al things, it obediently served your all-nourishing bounty,conforming to the wishes of those who were in need;
26 perché i tuoi figli, che ami, Signore, imparassero che non i diversi frutti fanno vivere l'uomo, ma la tua parola conserva in vita quanti credono in te.	26 so that your beloved children, Lord, might learn that the various crops are not what providenourishment, but your word which preserves al who believe in you.
27 Infatti, ciò che non era stato distrutto dal fuoco, subito si scioglieva, riscaldato da un semplice raggio di sole	27 For that which fire could not destroy melted in the heat of a single fleeting sunbeam,
28 perché fosse noto che è necessario prevenire il sole per renderti grazie e incontrarti al sorgere della luce,	28 to show that, to give you thanks, we must rise before the sun and meet you at the dawning of theday;
29 poiché la speranza dell'ingrato si scioglierà come brina invernale e scorrerà via come acqua inutile.	29 whereas the hope of the ungrateful melts like winter frost and flows away like water running to waste.
