1 Vedi com'è fallita la tua speranza; al solo vederlo uno resta sgomento.	1 Whoever might vainly hope to do so need only see him to be overthrown.
2 Nessuno è tanto audace da osare di provocarlo, e chi mai potrebbe resistergli faccia a faccia?	2 Is he not relentless when aroused; who then dares stand before him?
3 Chi mai lo ha affrontato senza danno? Nessuno sotto tutto il cielo.	3 Who has assailed him and come off safe-- Who under all the heavens?
4 Non passerò sotto silenzio le sue membra, in fatto di forza non ha pari.	4 I need hardly mention his limbs, his strength, and the fitness of his armor.
5 Chi ha aperto sul davanti il suo manto, e attraverso la sua doppia corazza chi può penetrare?	5 Who can strip off his outer garment, or penetrate his double corselet?
6 Chi mai ha aperto la porta delle sue fauci, circondate da denti spaventosi?	6 Who can force open the doors of his mouth, close to his terrible teeth?
7 Il suo dorso è una distesa di squame, strettamente saldate con un suggello.	7 Rows of scales are on his back, tightly sealed together;
8 L'una con l'altra si toccano, così che neppure il vento passa tramezzo;	8 They are fitted each so close to the next that no space intervenes;
9 saldate le une con le altre, sono compatte e non possono separarsi.	9 So joined one to another that they hold fast and cannot be parted.
10 Il suo starnuto irradia luce e i suoi occhi sono come le pupille dell'aurora.	10 When he sneezes, light flashes forth; his eyes are like those of the dawn.
11 Dalle sue fauci partono vampate, sprizzano scintille di fuoco.	11 Out of his mouth go forth firebrands; sparks of fire leap forth.
12 Dalle sue narici esce fumo, come da pentola attizzata e bollente.	12 From his nostrils issues steam, as from a seething pot or bowl.
13 Il suo fiato incendia carboni e dalle sue fauci escono fiamme.	13 His breath sets coals afire; a flame pours from his mouth.
14 Nel suo collo ha sede la forza e innanzi a lui incede il terrore.	14 Strength abides in his neck, and terror leaps before him.
15 Le giogaie della sua carne sono ben compatte, sono ben salde su di lui e non si muovono.
16 Il suo cuore è duro come pietra, solido come la macina inferiore.	16 His heart is hard as stone; his flesh, as the lower millstone.
17 Quando si alza, si spaventano i forti, e per il terrore restano smarriti.	17 When he rises up, the mighty are afraid; the waves of the sea fall back.
18 La spada che lo raggiunge non gli si infigge, né lancia né freccia né giavellotto.	18 Should the sword reach him, it will not avail; nor will the spear, nor the dart, nor the javelin.
19 Considera il ferro come paglia e il bronzo come legno tarlato.	19 He regards iron as straw, and bronze as rotten wood.
20 La freccia non lo mette in fuga; le pietre della fionda si cambiano per lui in preda.	20 The arrow will not put him to flight; slingstones used against him are but straws.
21 La mazza è per lui come stoppia e si fa beffe del vibrare dell'asta.	21 Clubs he esteems as splinters; he laughs at the crash of the spear.
22 Sotto la pancia ha delle punte acuminate, e come erpice striscia sul molle terreno.	22 His belly is sharp as pottery fragments; he spreads like a threshing sledge upon the mire.
23 Fa bollire come pentola il gorgo e trasforma il mare in vaso d'unguento.	23 He makes the depths boil like a pot; the sea he churns like perfume in a kettle.
24 Si lascia dietro una scia di luce e l'abisso sembra coperto di canizie.	24 Behind him he leaves a shining path; you would think the deep had the hoary head of age.
25 Non v'è nulla sulla terra che lo domini, lui che fu fatto intrepido.	25 Upon the earth there is not his like, intrepid he was made.
26 Su tutte le altezze egli guarda dall'alto, egli è il re di tutte le fiere superbe!".	26 All, however lofty, fear him; he is king over all proud beasts.
