1 Il re dell'Egitto radunò truppe, numerose come la rena che è sulla riva del mare, e navi in quantità, volendo impadronirsi con astuzia del regno di Alessandro per annetterlo al suo proprio regno.	1 And the king of Egypt gathered together a great host, like the sand that lieth upon the sea shore, and many ships, and went about through deceit to get Alexander's kingdom, and join it to his own.
2 Si mosse alla volta della Siria con parole di pace e gli abitanti delle città gli aprivano le porte e gli andavano incontro, perché il re Alessandro, essendo suo suocero, aveva ordinato di andargli incontro.	2 Whereupon he took his journey into Spain in peaceable manner, so as they of the cities opened unto him, and met him: for king Alexander had commanded them so to do, because he was his brother in law.
3 Tolomeo, però, una volta entrato nelle città, lasciava in ognuna le sue truppe per custodirle.	3 Now as Ptolemee entered into the cities, he set in every one of them a garrison of soldiers to keep it.
4 Quando giunse ad Asdòd, gli mostrarono il tempio di Dagon incendiato, Asdòd stessa e i suoi sobborghi distrutti, i cadaveri abbandonati e i resti di quelli che Gionata aveva fatto bruciare in guerra: di questi, infatti, ne avevano fatto dei mucchi lungo il suo percorso.	4 And when he came near to Azotus, they shewed him the temple of Dagon that was burnt, and Azotus and the suburbs thereof that were destroyed, and the bodies that were cast abroad and them that he had burnt in the battle; for they had made heaps of them by the way where he should pass.
5 Gli raccontarono pure quanto aveva fatto Gionata, pensando che egli lo avrebbe biasimato, ma il re tacque.	5 Also they told the king whatsoever Jonathan had done, to the intent he might blame him: but the king held his peace.
6 Gionata, con grande pompa, andò ad incontrare il re a Giaffa; si salutarono l'un l'altro e passarono la notte là.	6 Then Jonathan met the king with great pomp at Joppa, where they saluted one another, and lodged.
7 Gionata poi andò con il re fino al fiume chiamato Elèutero e quindi se ne tornò a Gerusalemme.	7 Afterward Jonathan, when he had gone with the king to the river called Eleutherus, returned again to Jerusalem.
8 Il re Tolomeo divenne così padrone delle città del litorale fino a Seleucia marittima, mentre meditava cattivi progetti ai danni di Alessandro.	8 King Ptolemee therefore, having gotten the dominion of the cities by the sea unto Seleucia upon the sea coast, imagined wicked counsels against Alexander.
9 Egli poi inviò degli ambasciatori al re Demetrio e gli fece dire: "Vieni, facciamo alleanza tra noi. Ti darò mia figlia che Alessandro ha in moglie e regnerai nel regno di tuo padre.	9 Whereupon he sent ambasadors unto king Demetrius, saying, Come, let us make a league betwixt us, and I will give thee my daughter whom Alexander hath, and thou shalt reign in thy father's kingdom:
10 Io, infatti, mi sono pentito di avergli dato mia figlia, poiché egli tentò di uccidermi".	10 For I repent that I gave my daughter unto him, for he sought to slay me.
11 In realtà egli lo biasimava perché bramava impossessarsi del suo regno.	11 Thus did he slander him, because he was desirous of his kingdom.
12 Quindi, toltagli sua figlia, la diede a Demetrio. In questo modo si separò da Alessandro e la loro inimicizia si fece manifesta.	12 Wherefore he took his daughter from him, and gave her to Demetrius, and forsook Alexander, so that their hatred was openly known.
13 Tolomeo poi entrò in Antiochia e vi cinse il diadema dell'Asia: pose sulla sua testa due diademi, quello dell'Egitto e quello dell'Asia.	13 Then Ptolemee entered into Antioch, where he set two crowns upon his head, the crown of Asia, and of Egypt.
14 Il re Alessandro in quei giorni era in Cilicia, perché gli abitanti di quelle zone gli si erano ribellati.	14 In the mean season was king Alexander in Cilicia, because those that dwelt in those parts had revolted from him.
15 Quando Alessandro fu informato di ciò, marciò contro di lui in guerra; ma Tolomeo, uscito fuori, gli mosse contro con grande potenza e lo mise in fuga.	15 But when Alexander heard of this, he came to war against him: whereupon king Ptolemee brought forth his host, and met him with a mighty power, and put him to flight.
16 Alessandro fuggì in Arabia per trovarvi riparo; il re Tolomeo invece fu glorificato.	16 So Alexander fled into Arabia there to be defended; but king Ptolemee was exalted:
17 L'arabo Zabdiel mozzò la testa di Alessandro e l'inviò a Tolomeo.	17 For Zabdiel the Arabian took off Alexander's head, and sent it unto Ptolemee.
18 Ma tre giorni dopo anche il re Tolomeo morì e i suoi uomini che erano nelle fortezze furono uccisi dagli altri che erano nelle fortezze stesse.	18 King Ptolemee also died the third day after, and they that were in the strong holds were slain one of another.
19 Così Demetrio incominciò a regnare nell'anno 16 7.	19 By this means Demetrius reigned in the hundred threescore and seventh year.
20 In quei giorni Gionata radunò gli uomini della Giudea per attaccare l'Acra che era in Gerusalemme, e fece fare molte macchine militari per usarle contro di essa.	20 At the same time Jonathan gathered together them that were in Judea to take the tower that was in Jerusalem: and he made many engines of war against it.
21 Allora alcuni uomini iniqui, che odiavano la propria gente, andarono dal re e gli riferirono che Gionata assediava l'Acra.	21 Then came ungodly persons, who hated their own people, went unto the king, and told him that Jonathan besieged the tower,
22 Udito ciò, il re si adirò e, avutane conferma, levò subito il campo e si recò a Tolemaide e scrisse a Gionata di togliere l'assedio e di andargli incontro al più presto a Tolemaide per conferire con lui.	22 Whereof when he heard, he was angry, and immediately removing, he came to Ptolemais, and wrote unto Jonathan, that he should not lay siege to the tower, but come and speak with him at Ptolemais in great haste.
23 Udito ciò, Gionata comandò di continuare l'assedio; poi, scelti alcuni anziani d'Israele e sacerdoti, affrontò il pericolo.	23 Nevertheless Jonathan, when he heard this, commanded to besiege it still: and he chose certain of the elders of Israel and the priests, and put himself in peril;
24 Preso argento, oro, vestiti e molti altri doni, si recò dal re a Tolemaide e trovò grazia presso di lui.	24 And took silver and gold, and raiment, and divers presents besides, and went to Ptolemais unto the king, where he found favour in his sight.
25 Alcuni empi della sua nazione tentarono di intervenire contro di lui,	25 And though certain ungodly men of the people had made complaints against him,
26 ma il re lo trattò come lo avevano trattato i suoi predecessori e lo esaltò davanti a tutti i suoi amici.	26 Yet the king entreated him as his predecessors had done before, and promoted him in the sight of all his friends,
27 Gli confermò il sommo sacerdozio e tutte le altre dignità che aveva per l'innanzi e volle che fosse annoverato tra i primi amici.	27 And confirmed him in the high priesthood, and in all the honours that he had before, and gave him preeminence among his chief friends.
28 Gionata chiese al re di rendere la Giudea esente dalle imposte, al pari delle tre toparchie e della Samaria, promettendogli trecento talenti.	28 Then Jonathan desired the king, that he would make Judea free from tribute, as also the three governments, with the country of Samaria; and he promised him three hundred talents.
29 Il re accondiscese e scrisse a Gionata, intorno a tutte queste cose, lettere così concepite:	29 So the king consented, and wrote letters unto Jonathan of all these things after this manner:
30 "Re Demetrio al fratello Gionata e alla nazione dei Giudei, salute!	30 King Demetrius unto his brother Jonathan, and unto the nation of the Jews, sendeth greeting:
31 Una copia della lettera che abbiamo scritta a Làstene, nostro parente, a vostro riguardo, la scriviamo anche per voi affinché ne prendiate conoscenza.	31 We send you here a copy of the letter which we did write unto our cousin Lasthenes concerning you, that ye might see it.
32 Il re Demetrio al padre Làstene, salute!	32 King Demetrius unto his father Lasthenes sendeth greeting:
33 Alla nazione dei Giudei, che sono nostri amici e osservano ciò che è giusto verso di noi, abbiamo giudicato opportuno far loro del bene in ragione dei buoni sentimenti che hanno per noi.	33 We are determined to do good to the people of the Jews, who are our friends, and keep covenants with us, because of their good will toward us.
34 Pertanto confermiamo loro il possesso dei territori della Giudea e dei tre distretti di Afèrema, Lidda e Ramatàim. Essi, con le loro dipendenze, dalla Samaria furono annessi alla Giudea a favore di tutti quelli che offrono sacrifici in Gerusalemme, in compenso delle imposte regali che il re prendeva da essi per l'innanzi ogni anno, sui prodotti della terra e sui frutti degli alberi.	34 Wherefore we have ratified unto them the borders of Judea, with the three governments of Apherema and Lydda and Ramathem, that are added unto Judea from the country of Samaria, and all things appertaining unto them, for all such as do sacrifice in Jerusalem, instead of the payments which the king received of them yearly aforetime out of the fruits of the earth and of trees.
35 Quanto agli altri diritti che abbiamo sulle decime e sui tributi che ci si devono, sulle saline e le corone che ci erano dovute, da questo momento vi rinunziamo completamente.	35 And as for other things that belong unto us, of the tithes and customs pertaining unto us, as also the saltpits, and the crown taxes, which are due unto us, we discharge them of them all for their relief.
36 Nessuna di queste disposizioni sarà revocata a partire da questo momento e per sempre.	36 And nothing hereof shall be revoked from this time forth for ever.
37 Abbiate dunque cura di fare una copia della presente e di consegnarla a Gionata affinché sia collocata sul monte santo in luogo ben visibile".	37 Now therefore see that thou make a copy of these things, and let it be delivered unto Jonathan, and set upon the holy mount in a conspicuous place.
38 Il re Demetrio, vedendo che il paese era calmo davanti a lui e che nessuno gli si opponeva, licenziò tutte le sue truppe, ognuno al proprio paese, ad eccezione delle truppe straniere, che egli aveva reclutato dalle isole delle nazioni. Allora tutte le truppe che erano state con i suoi padri incominciarono ad osteggiarlo.	38 After this, when king Demetrius saw that the land was quiet before him, and that no resistance was made against him, he sent away all his forces, every one to his own place, except certain bands of strangers, whom he had gathered from the isles of the heathen: wherefore all the forces of his fathers hated him.
39 Trifone ch'era stato per l'innanzi dalla parte di Alessandro, vedendo che tutte le truppe mormoravano contro Demetrio, si recò presso l'arabo Imalcue, che allevava Antioco, il giovane figlio di Alessandro,	39 Moreover there was one Tryphon, that had been of Alexander's part afore, who, seeing that all the host murmured against Demetrius, went to Simalcue the Arabian that brought up Antiochus the young son of Alexander,
40 e lo circuiva affinché glielo consegnasse per farlo regnare al posto di suo padre. Gli parlò pure delle cose che Demetrio aveva ordinato e dell'inimicizia che i suoi soldati nutrivano per lui; e rimase lì per molti giorni.	40 And lay sore upon him to deliver him this young Antiochus, that he might reign in his father's stead: he told him therefore all that Demetrius had done, and how his men of war were at enmity with him, and there he remained a long season.
41 Gionata mandò a chiedere al re Demetrio di rimuovere da Gerusalemme gli uomini che erano nell'Acra e gli altri che erano nelle fortezze, perché facevano guerra a Israele.	41 In the mean time Jonathan sent unto king Demetrius, that he would cast those of the tower out of Jerusalem, and those also in the fortresses: for they fought against Israel.
42 Demetrio però mandò a dire a Gionata: "Non solo questo farò per te e per la tua nazione, ma colmerò di onori te e la tua nazione, appena mi si presenti la buona occasione.	42 So Demetrius sent unto Jonathan, saying, I will not only do this for thee and thy people, but I will greatly honour thee and thy nation, if opportunity serve.
43 Ora però farai bene a inviarmi uomini che combattano con me, poiché tutte le truppe mi si sono allontanate".	43 Now therefore thou shalt do well, if thou send me men to help me; for all my forces are gone from me.
44 Gionata gli inviò in Antiochia tremila uomini molto valorosi e, quando questi giunsero presso il re, il re si rallegrò per il loro arrivo.	44 Upon this Jonathan sent him three thousand strong men unto Antioch: and when they came to the king, the king was very glad of their coming.
45 Gli abitanti della città si radunarono al centro della città in numero di circa centoventimila e volevano eliminare il re.	45 Howbeit they that were of the city gathered themselves together into the midst of the city, to the number of an hundred and twenty thousand men, and would have slain the king.
46 Il re però si rifugiò nel palazzo, mentre gli abitanti della città invadevano le vie della città e incominciavano a combattere.	46 Wherefore the king fled into the court, but they of the city kept the passages of the city, and began to fight.
47 Il re allora chiamò in soccorso i Giudei e questi si radunarono presso di lui tutti insieme; poi si dispersero per la città e ne uccisero, in quel giorno, circa centomila.	47 Then the king called to the Jews for help, who came unto him all at once, and dispersing themselves through the city slew that day in the city to the number of an hundred thousand.
48 Diedero fuoco alla città, raccolsero molte spoglie in quel giorno e salvarono il re.	48 Also they set fire on the city, and gat many spoils that day, and delivered the king.
49 Ora gli abitanti della città, quando videro che i Giudei si erano impadroniti della città a loro piacimento, si persero d'animo e incominciarono ad elevare suppliche al re dicendo:	49 So when they of the city saw that the Jews had got the city as they would, their courage was abated: wherefore they made supplication to the king, and cried, saying,
50 "Dacci la destra e cessino i Giudei di combattere contro di noi e contro la città!".	50 Grant us peace, and let the Jews cease from assaulting us and the city.
51 Deposero le armi e fecero la pace. Così i Giudei si coprirono di gloria davanti al re e a tutti i cittadini del suo regno e ritornarono a Gerusalemme con molte spoglie.	51 With that they cast away their weapons, and made peace; and the Jews were honoured in the sight of the king, and in the sight of all that were in his realm; and they returned to Jerusalem, having great spoils.
52 In questo modo il re Demetrio poté sedersi sul trono del suo regno e il paese rimase tranquillo sotto di lui.	52 So king Demetrius sat on the throne of his kingdom, and the land was quiet before him.
53 Egli poi, però, rinnegò tutto ciò che aveva promesso, si mostrò ostile a Gionata e non ricambiò i favori che questi gli aveva reso; anzi incominciò a vessarlo duramente.	53 Nevertheless he dissembled in all that ever he spake, and estranged himself from Jonathan, neither rewarded he him according to the benefits which he had received of him, but troubled him very sore.
54 Dopo queste cose, Trifone ritornò con Antioco, ancora molto giovane. Incominciò a regnare e cinse il diadema.	54 After this returned Tryphon, and with him the young child Antiochus, who reigned, and was crowned.
55 Si radunarono attorno a lui tutte le truppe che Demetrio aveva congedato e combatterono contro costui, il quale fu messo in fuga e travolto,	55 Then there gathered unto him all the men of war, whom Demetrius had put away, and they fought against Demetrius, who turned his back and fled.
56 mentre Trifone catturò gli elefanti e si impadronì di Antiochia.	56 Moreover Tryphon took the elephants, and won Antioch.
57 Il giovanetto Antioco scrisse a Gionata dicendogli: "Ti confermo il sommo sacerdozio, ti pongo a capo dei quattro distretti e ti annovero tra gli amici del re".	57 At that time young Antiochus wrote unto Jonathan, saying, I confirm thee in the high priesthood, and appoint thee ruler over the four governments, and to be one of the king's friends.
58 Gl'inviò vasellame d'oro e un servizio da tavola, gli diede facoltà di bere in vasi d'oro, d'indossare la porpora e di portare una fibbia d'oro.	58 Upon this he sent him golden vessels to be served in, and gave him leave to drink in gold, and to be clothed in purple, and to wear a golden buckle.
59 Inoltre costituì suo fratello Simone stratega dalla Scala di Tiro sino ai confini dell'Egitto.	59 His brother Simon also he made captain from the place called The ladder of Tyrus unto the borders of Egypt.
60 Gionata cominciò a percorrere la regione d'oltre il fiume e le varie città, e tutto l'esercito di Siria si unì a lui per combattere insieme. Andò ad Ascalòna e gli abitanti della città lo ricevettero con onore.	60 Then Jonathan went forth, and passed through the cities beyond the water, and all the forces of Syria gathered themselves unto him for to help him: and when he came to Ascalon, they of the city met him honourably.
61 Di qui andò a Gaza; ma quelli di Gaza gli chiusero le porte. Allora egli l'assediò, incendiò i suoi sobborghi e li saccheggiò.	61 From whence he went to Gaza, but they of Gaza shut him out; wherefore he laid siege unto it, and burned the suburbs thereof with fire, and spoiled them.
62 Quelli di Gaza allora supplicarono Gionata ed egli diede loro la destra in segno di pace; prese tuttavia come ostaggi i figli dei loro capi e li spedì a Gerusalemme. Quindi attraversò la regione fino a Damasco.	62 Afterward, when they of Gaza made supplication unto Jonathan, he made peace with them, and took the sons of their chief men for hostages, and sent them to Jerusalem, and passed through the country unto Damascus.
63 Ma poi, avendo saputo che i generali di Demetrio si trovavano a Cades in Galilea con un grande esercito e che volevano fargli abbandonare l'impresa,	63 Now when Jonathan heard that Demetrius' princes were come to Cades, which is in Galilee, with a great power, purposing to remove him out of the country,
64 marciò contro di loro, lasciando suo fratello Simone nella regione.	64 He went to meet them, and left Simon his brother in the country.
65 Simone venne ad accamparsi sotto Bet-Zur e per molti giorni combatté contro di essa tenendola assediata.	65 Then Simon encamped against Bethsura and fought against it a long season, and shut it up:
66 Lo supplicarono di accettare la loro destra ed egli acconsentì. Tuttavia li espulse di lì, occupò la città e vi pose una guarnigione.	66 But they desired to have peace with him, which he granted them, and then put them out from thence, and took the city, and set a garrison in it.
67 Gionata e il suo esercito, invece, andarono ad accamparsi presso le acque di Genesaret e di buon mattino giunsero nella pianura di Casòr.	67 As for Jonathan and his host, they pitched at the water of Gennesar, from whence betimes in the morning they gat them to the plain of Nasor.
68 Ed ecco che l'esercito degli stranieri stava loro davanti nella pianura, mentre altri organizzavano un'imboscata contro di lui sui monti. Quelli avanzarono frontalmente,	68 And, behold, the host of strangers met them in the plain, who, having laid men in ambush for him in the mountains, came themselves over against him.
69 quando gl'imboscati, usciti dai loro luoghi, attaccarono battaglia.	69 So when they that lay in ambush rose out of their places and joined battle, all that were of Jonathan's side fled;
70 Gli uomini di Gionata fuggirono, nessuno di loro rimase, all'infuori di Mattatia, figlio di Assalonne, e Giuda, figlio di Calfi, capi dell'esercito.	70 Insomuch as there was not one of them left, except Mattathias the son of Absalom, and Judas the son of Calphi, the captains of the host.
71 Gionata si stracciò le vesti, si cosparse il capo di polvere e pregò.	71 Then Jonathan rent his clothes, and cast earth upon his head, and prayed.
72 Quindi si voltò contro i nemici combattendo, li mise in rotta e fuggirono.	72 Afterwards turning again to battle, he put them to flight, and so they ran away.
73 Visto ciò, quelli che erano fuggiti tornarono da lui e con lui li inseguirono fino al loro accampamento a Cades. Quivi si accamparono.	73 Now when his own men that were fled saw this, they turned again unto him, and with him pursued them to Cades, even unto their own tents, and there they camped.
74 Gli stranieri caduti in quel giorno furono circa tremila uomini. Quindi Gionata fece ritorno a Gerusalemme.	74 So there were slain of the heathen that day about three thousand men: but Jonathan returned to Jerusalem.
