LA SACRA BIBBIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Tutta la comunità dei figli d'Israele partì dal deserto di Sin per le loro tappe, secondo la parola del Signore, e si accamparono a Refidim: ma non c'era acqua da bere per il popolo.	1 The whole community of Israelites left the desert of Sin, travel ing by stages as Yahweh ordered. Theypitched camp at Rephidim where there was no water for the people to drink.
2 Il popolo protestò con Mosè e disse: "Dacci dell'acqua, perché possiamo bere". Mosè disse loro: "Perché discutete con me? Perché tentate il Signore?".	2 The people took issue with Moses for this and said, 'Give us water to drink.' Moses replied, 'Why takeissue with me? Why do you put Yahweh to the test?'
3 Là il popolo era assetato d'acqua. Il popolo mormorò contro Mosè e disse: "Perché ci hai fatto salire dall'Egitto, per far morire me, i miei figli e il mio bestiame di sete?".	3 But tormented by thirst, the people complained to Moses. 'Why did you bring us out of Egypt,' theysaid, 'only to make us, our children and our livestock, die of thirst?'
4 Mosè gridò al Signore, dicendo: "Che cosa farò a questo popolo? Ancora un po' e mi lapiderà".	4 Moses appealed to Yahweh for help. 'How am I to deal with this people?' he said. 'Any moment nowthey will stone me!'
5 Il Signore disse a Mosè: "Passa davanti al popolo e prendi con te degli anziani d'Israele: prendi nella tua mano il tuo bastone con il quale hai colpito il fiume, e va'.	5 Yahweh then said to Moses, 'Go on ahead of the people, taking some of the elders of Israel with you;in your hand take the staff with which you struck the River, and go.
6 Ecco, io sto davanti a te, là sulla roccia, sull'Oreb: colpirai la roccia e ne uscirà acqua. Il popolo berrà". Così fece Mosè agli occhi degli anziani d'Israele.	6 I shal be waiting for you there on the rock (at Horeb). Strike the rock, and water wil come out for thepeople to drink.' This was what Moses did, with the elders of Israel looking on.
7 Chiamò quel luogo Massa e Meriba, per la contesa dei figli d'Israele e perché tentarono il Signore dicendo: "Il Signore è in mezzo a noi o no?".	7 He gave the place the names Massah and Meribah because of the Israelites' contentiousness andbecause they put Yahweh to the test by saying, 'Is Yahweh with us, or not?'
8 Venne Amalek e combatté contro Israele a Refidim.	8 The Amalekites then came and attacked Israel at Rephidim.
9 Mosè disse a Giosuè: "Scegli per noi degli uomini ed esci a combattere Amalek. Domani io mi terrò ritto in cima alla collina, con in mano il bastone di Dio".	9 Moses said to Joshua, 'Pick some men and tomorrow morning go out and engage Amalek. I, for mypart, shal take my stand on the hil top with the staff of God in my hand.'
10 Giosuè fece come Mosè gli aveva detto per combattere Amalek. Mosè, Aronne e Cur salirono in cima alla collina.	10 Joshua did as Moses had told him and went out to engage Amalek, while Moses, Aaron and Hurwent up to the top of the hil .
11 E quando Mosè alzava la sua mano, Israele era più forte, e quando abbassava la sua mano, era più forte Amalek.	11 As long as Moses kept his arms raised, Israel had the advantage; when he let his arms fall, theadvantage went to Amalek.
12 Ma le mani di Mosè pesavano: allora presero una pietra e la misero sotto di lui. Vi si sedette sopra, mentre Aronne e Cur sostenevano le sue mani, uno da una parte e l'altro dall'altra. E le sue mani rimasero ferme fino al tramonto del sole.	12 But Moses' arms grew heavy, so they took a stone and put it under him and on this he sat, withAaron and Hur supporting his arms on each side. Thus his arms remained unwavering til sunset,
13 Giosuè finì Amalek e il suo popolo a fil di spada.	13 and Joshua defeated Amalek, putting their people to the sword.
14 Il Signore disse a Mosè: "Scrivi questo su un libro come ricordo e dichiara alle orecchie di Giosuè che io cancellerò il ricordo di Amalek da sotto il sole".	14 Yahweh then said to Moses, 'Write this down in a book to commemorate it, and repeat it over toJoshua, for I shal blot out al memory of Amalek under heaven.'
15 Allora Mosè costruì un altare, lo chiamò "Il Signore è il mio segnale",	15 Moses then built an altar and named it Yahweh-Nissi
16 e disse: "Mano al vessillo del Signore! Guerra per il Signore contro Amalek di generazione in generazione!".	16 meaning, 'Lay hold of Yahweh's banner! Yahweh wil be at war with Amalek generation aftergeneration.'
