1 Il suddetto Simone, che si era fatto delatore delle ricchezze e della patria, calunniava Onia, quasi che questi avesse percosso Eliodoro e fosse stato l'artefice dei suoi mali.	1 This Simon now, of whom we spake afore, having been a betrayer of the money, and of his country, slandered Onias, as if he ha terrified Heliodorus, and been the worker of these evils.
2 Osava chiamare eversore della cosa pubblica il benefattore della città, il protettore dei connazionali e il custode zelante delle leggi!	2 Thus was he bold to call him a traitor, that had deserved well of the city, and tendered his own nation, and was so zealous of the laws.
3 Ora, essendo giunta la sua ostilità a tal punto che furono compiuti omicidi da uno di coloro che erano stati arruolati dallo stesso Simone,	3 But when their hatred went so far, that by one of Simon's faction murders were committed,
4 Onia, considerando il danno della rivalità e il fatto che Apollonio figlio di Menesteo, governatore della Celesiria e della Fenicia, fomentava la cattiveria di Simone,	4 Onias seeing the danger of this contention, and that Apollonius, as being the governor of Celosyria and Phenice, did rage, and increase Simon's malice,
5 si recò dal re, non per farsi accusatore dei cittadini, ma guardando all'utilità comune e privata di tutto il popolo.	5 He went to the king, not to be an accuser of his countrymen, but seeking the good of all, both publick and private:
6 Egli infatti vedeva bene che senza una decisione del re sarebbe stato impossibile che la pace tornasse ormai nella cosa pubblica e che Simone ponesse fine alla sua follia.	6 For he saw that it was impossible that the state should continue quiet, and Simon leave his folly, unless the king did look thereunto.
7 Intanto, passato Selèuco all'altra vita e avendo Antioco, soprannominato Epifane, occupato il regno, Giasone, fratello di Onia, si procurò per corruzione il sommo sacerdozio,	7 But after the death of Seleucus, when Antiochus, called Epiphanes, took the kingdom, Jason the brother of Onias laboured underhand to be high priest,
8 promettendo al re, durante un incontro, trecentosessanta talenti d'argento e altri ottanta, riscossi da qualche altra entrata.	8 Promising unto the king by intercession three hundred and threescore talents of silver, and of another revenue eighty talents:
9 Inoltre si impegnò a sottoscriverne altri centocinquanta, se gli fosse stato concesso di erigere, di sua autorità, un ginnasio e un'efebia e di suscitare un'associazione di antiocheni in Gerusalemme.	9 Beside this, he promised to assign an hundred and fifty more, if he might have licence to set him up a place for exercise, and for the training up of youth in the fashions of the heathen, and to write them of Jerusalem by the name of Antiochians.
10 Avendo il re acconsentito, egli, assunto il potere, si diede subito a trasformare i connazionali alla maniera greca.	10 Which when the king had granted, and he had gotten into his hand the rule he forthwith brought his own nation to Greekish fashion.
11 Mise da parte le benigne concessioni fatte dai re ai Giudei per opera di Giovanni, padre di quell'Eupolemo che poi compì l'ambasciata per l'amicizia e l'alleanza con i Romani; quindi, abolite le istituzioni patrie, instaurò consuetudini inique.	11 And the royal privileges granted of special favour to the Jews by the means of John the father of Eupolemus, who went ambassador to Rome for amity and aid, he took away; and putting down the governments which were according to the law, he brought up new customs against the law:
12 Con piacere, infatti, eresse un ginnasio, proprio sotto l'acropoli, e indusse i migliori giovani a portare il petaso.	12 For he built gladly a place of exercise under the tower itself, and brought the chief young men under his subjection, and made them wear a hat.
13 Vi fu, in questo modo, un tale ardore di ellenismo e una tale invadenza di moda straniera, a causa della straordinaria scelleratezza dell'empio e niente affatto sommo sacerdote Giasone,	13 Now such was the height of Greek fashions, and increase of heathenish manners, through the exceeding profaneness of Jason, that ungodly wretch, and no high priest;
14 che i sacerdoti non erano più zelanti per la liturgia dell'altare; anzi, disprezzando il tempio e trascurando i sacrifici, si affrettavano a prendere parte nella palestra, al segnale del disco, ai giochi contrari alla legge,	14 That the priests had no courage to serve any more at the altar, but despising the temple, and neglecting the sacrifices, hastened to be partakers of the unlawful allowance in the place of exercise, after the game of Discus called them forth;
15 non facendo più alcun conto delle dignità nazionali e stimando invece ottime le glorie ellenistiche.	15 Not setting by the honours of their fathers, but liking the glory of the Grecians best of all.
16 A causa di ciò una dura sventura piombò sopra di essi, trovando i loro nemici e giustizieri proprio in coloro per le cui istituzioni si erano fatti zelanti e a cui avevano voluto in tutto assomigliare.	16 By reason whereof sore calamity came upon them: for they had them to be their enemies and avengers, whose custom they followed so earnestly, and unto whom they desired to be like in all things.
17 Veramente non è mai comodo agire empiamente contro le leggi divine. Ma questo lo dimostrerà il periodo storico seguente.	17 For it is not a light thing to do wickedly against the laws of God: but the time following shall declare these things.
18 Celebrandosi in Tiro i giochi quinquennali alla presenza del re,	18 Now when the game that was used every faith year was kept at Tyrus, the king being present,
19 il turpe Giasone vi mandò, come spettatori, alcuni antiocheni di Gerusalemme, i quali recavano trecento dramme d'argento per il sacrificio a Ercole. I latori però giudicarono non essere conveniente usarle per il sacrificio, ma piuttosto di destinarle ad altra spesa.	19 This ungracious Jason sent special messengers from Jerusalem, who were Antiochians, to carry three hundred drachms of silver to the sacrifice of Hercules, which even the bearers thereof thought fit not to bestow upon the sacrifice, because it was not convenient, but to be reserved for other charges.
20 Perciò quanto era stato inviato per il sacrificio a Ercole, per merito dei latori fu versato per l'allestimento di triremi.	20 This money then, in regard of the sender, was appointed to Hercules' sacrifice; but because of the bearers thereof, it was employed to the making of gallies.
21 Da Apollonio, figlio di Menesteo, che era stato inviato in Egitto per l'intronizzazione del re Filometore, Antioco apprese che costui era divenuto ostile al suo governo e perciò si preoccupò della sua sicurezza. Per questa ragione, recatosi prima a Giaffa, giunse poi a Gerusalemme.	21 Now when Apollonius the son of Menestheus was sent into Egypt for the coronation of king Ptolemeus Philometor, Antiochus, understanding him not to be well affected to his affairs, provided for his own safety: whereupon he came to Joppa, and from thence to Jerusalem:
22 Accolto magnificamente da Giasone e dalla città, fu ricevuto con fiaccolate e acclamazioni. Di qui poi marciò verso la Fenicia.	22 Where he was honourably received of Jason, and of the city, and was brought in with torch alight, and with great shoutings: and so afterward went with his host unto Phenice.
23 Tre anni dopo, Giasone inviò Menelao, fratello del menzionato Simone, a portare del danaro al re e per sbrigare le pratiche relative ad affari urgenti.	23 Three years afterward Jason sent Menelans, the aforesaid Simon's brother, to bear the money unto the king, and to put him in mind of certain necessary matters.
24 Questi, presentatosi al re e adulandolo con le maniere di un uomo potente, si accaparrò il sommo sacerdozio, superando Giasone per trecento talenti d'argento.	24 But he being brought to the presence of the king, when he had magnified him for the glorious appearance of his power, got the priesthood to himself, offering more than Jason by three hundred talents of silver.
25 Ricevute le lettere commendatizie, si presentò non portando nulla che fosse degno del sommo sacerdozio, ma piuttosto avendo in sé i sentimenti d'un tiranno crudele e le disposizioni di una bestia selvaggia.	25 So he came with the king's mandate, bringing nothing worthy the high priesthood, but having the fury of a cruel tyrant, and the rage of a savage beast.
26 Così Giasone, che aveva ingannato il suo proprio fratello, ingannato a sua volta da un altro, fu costretto a fuggire nella regione dell'Ammanìtide.	26 Then Jason, who had undermined his own brother, being undermined by another, was compelled to flee into the country of the Ammonites.
27 Menelao pertanto teneva in pugno il potere, ma non si curava affatto del denaro promesso al re.	27 So Menelans got the principality: but as for the money that he had promised unto the king, he took no good order for it, albeit Sostratis the ruler of the castle required it:
28 Sòstrato allora, che era comandante dell'acropoli, gliene fece richiesta, poiché spettava a lui la riscossione delle imposte. Per questa ragione furono ambedue convocati dal re.	28 For unto him appertained the gathering of the customs. Wherefore they were both called before the king.
29 Menelao perciò lasciò per sostituto nel sommo sacerdozio il proprio fratello Lisìmaco; Sòstrato lasciò Cratète, comandante dei Ciprioti.	29 Now Menelans left his brother Lysimachus in his stead in the priesthood; and Sostratus left Crates, who was governor of the Cyprians.
30 Stavano così le cose, quando accadde che gli abitanti di Tarso e di Mallo si ribellarono per essere stati dati in dono ad Antiochide, concubina del re.	30 While those things were in doing, they of Tarsus and Mallos made insurrection, because they were given to the king's concubine, called Antiochus.
31 Il re partì in fretta per sistemare l'affare e lasciò come sostituto Andronico, uno dei grandi dignitari.	31 Then came the king in all haste to appease matters, leaving Andronicus, a man in authority, for his deputy.
32 Menelao, allora, stimando di cogliere la buona occasione, sottrasse alcuni oggetti d'oro del tempio e ne fece dono ad Andronico, mentre altri riuscì a venderli a Tiro e nelle città vicine.	32 Now Menelans, supposing that he had gotten a convenient time, stole certain vessels of gold out of the temple, and gave some of them to Andronicus, and some he sold into Tyrus and the cities round about.
33 Venutolo a sapere in modo sicuro, Onia protestò, dopo essersi rifugiato in un luogo inviolabile a Dafne, che è vicino ad Antiochia.	33 Which when Onias knew of a surety, he reproved him, and withdrew himself into a sanctuary at Daphne, that lieth by Antiochia.
34 Per questo Menelao, preso Andronico in disparte, lo sollecitò ad uccidere Onia. Quello allora, recatosi da Onia e ottenutane la fiducia con inganno, dandogli perfino la destra con giuramento, lo persuase, benché rimanesse ancora in sospetto, a uscire dal suo asilo e subito lo mise a morte senza alcun rispetto per la giustizia.	34 Wherefore Menelans, taking Andronicus apart, prayed, him to get Onias into his hands; who being persuaded thereunto, and coming to Onias in deceit, gave him his right hand with oaths; and though he were suspected by him, yet persuaded he him to come forth of the sanctuary: whom forthwith he shut up without regard of justice.
35 In seguito a ciò non solo i Giudei, ma molti anche di altre nazioni restarono indignati e afflitti per l'ingiusta uccisione di quest'uomo.	35 For the which cause not only the Jews, but many also of other nations, took great indignation, and were much grieved for the unjust murder of the man.
36 Quando il re tornò dai detti luoghi della Cilicia, i Giudei della città andarono da lui insieme ad alcuni Greci, che come loro deprecavano che Onia fosse stato ucciso senza ragione.	36 And when the king was come again from the places about Cilicia, the Jews that were in the city, and certain of the Greeks that abhorred the fact also, complained because Onias was slain without cause.
37 Antioco, dunque, rattristato fino all'anima e mosso a compassione, pianse per la prudenza e la grande moderazione del defunto.	37 Therefore Antiochus was heartily sorry, and moved to pity, and wept, because of the sober and modest behaviour of him that was dead.
38 Poi, infiammato d'ira, spogliò immediatamente Andronìco della porpora e gli stracciò le vesti, lo fece condurre per tutta la città fino al luogo in cui aveva commesso la sua empietà contro Onia e lì stesso eliminò questo sanguinario, rendendogli il Signore la degna punizione.	38 And being kindled with anger, forthwith he took away Andronicus his purple, and rent off his clothes, and leading him through the whole city unto that very place, where he had committed impiety against Onias, there slew he the cursed murderer. Thus the Lord rewarded him his punishment, as he had deserved.
39 Intanto molti furti sacrileghi erano stati compiuti in città da Lisimaco col consenso di Menelao. Essendosene sparsa la notizia anche al di fuori, il popolo insorse contro Lisimaco, quando già molti oggetti preziosi erano andati dispersi.	39 Now when many sacrileges had been committed in the city by Lysimachus with the consent of Menelans, and the fruit thereof was spread abroad, the multitude gathered themselves together against Lysimachus, many vessels of gold being already carried away.
40 La folla era eccitata e piena d'ira. Lisimaco allora, armati tremila uomini, cominciò a far commettere violenze sotto la guida di un certo Aurano, uomo avanzato in età e non meno in follia.	40 Whereupon the common people rising, and being filled with rage, Lysimachus armed about three thousand men, and began first to offer violence; one Auranus being the leader, a man far gone in years, and no less in folly.
41 Accortisi dell'attacco di Lisimaco, quelli del popolo afferrarono chi pietre e chi robusti bastoni; mentre alcuni raccoglievano a manate la polvere da terra, e si lanciarono alla rinfusa contro gli uomini di Lisimaco.	41 They then seeing the attempt of Lysimachus, some of them caught stones, some clubs, others taking handfuls of dust, that was next at hand, cast them all together upon Lysimachus, and those that set upon them.
42 In tal modo ne coprirono molti di ferite e altri ne abbatterono; li costrinsero tutti alla fuga e misero a morte lo stesso ladro sacrilego presso la camera del tesoro.	42 Thus many of them they wounded, and some they struck to the ground, and all of them they forced to flee: but as for the churchrobber himself, him they killed beside the treasury.
43 Intorno a questi fatti fu poi istituito un processo contro Menelao.	43 Of these matters therefore there was an accusation laid against Menelans.
44 Giunto il re a Tiro, tre uomini inviati dal Consiglio degli anziani fecero la loro requisitoria contro di lui.	44 Now when the king came to Tyrus, three men that were sent from the senate pleaded the cause before him:
45 Menelao, vedendosi già battuto, promise somme rilevanti a Tolomeo, figlio di Dorimene, perché persuadesse il re.	45 But Menelans, being now convicted, promised Ptolemee the son of Dorymenes to give him much money, if he would pacify the king toward him.
46 Tolomeo allora, condotto il re sotto un porticato come per fargli prendere aria, gli fece cambiare parere.	46 Whereupon Ptolemee taking the king aside into a certain gallery, as it were to take the air, brought him to be of another mind:
47 Così egli mandò assolto dalle accuse Menelao, che era la causa di tutto quel male; condannò invece a morte quegli infelici i quali, anche se avessero parlato davanti agli Sciti, sarebbero stati prosciolti come innocenti.	47 Insomuch that he discharged Menelans from the accusations, who notwithstanding was cause of all the mischief: and those poor men, who, if they had told their cause, yea, before the Scythians, should have been judged innocent, them he condemned to death.
48 Immediatamente subirono l'ingiusta pena coloro che avevano parlato in difesa della città, del popolo e dei vasi sacri.	48 Thus they that followed the matter for the city, and for the people, and for the holy vessels, did soon suffer unjust punishment.
49 Per questo motivo perfino gli abitanti di Tiro, che avevano sdegno per il male commesso, provvidero magnificamente all'occorrente per la loro sepoltura.	49 Wherefore even they of Tyrus, moved with hatred of that wicked deed, caused them to be honourably buried.
50 Ma Menelao, grazie alla cupidigia dei potenti, rimase al potere, crescendo in malvagità e facendosi grande insidiatore dei concittadini.	50 And so through the covetousness of them that were of power Menelans remained still in authority, increasing in malice, and being a great traitor to the citizens.
