1 L'ira del Signore si accese ancora una volta contro Israele e incitò Davide contro di esso, così: "Va' a fare il censimento d'Israele e di Giuda".	1 The LORD'S anger against Israel flared again, and he incited David against the Israelites by prompting him to number Israel and Judah.
2 Il re disse a Ioab, capo dell'esercito che era con lui: "Su, fa' un giro in tutte le tribù d'Israele, da Dan fino a Bersabea, e fate la rassegna del popolo, perché io conosca il numero del popolo".	2 Accordingly the king said to Joab and the leaders of the army who were with him, "Tour all the tribes in Israel from Dan to Beer-sheba and register the people, that I may know their number."
3 Ioab rispose al re: "Il Signore, tuo Dio, aggiunga al popolo cento volte altrettanto; e gli occhi del re, mio signore, lo possano vedere. Ma il re, mio signore, perché desidera questo?".	3 But Joab said to the king: "May the LORD your God increase the number of people a hundredfold for your royal majesty to see it with his own eyes. But why does it please my lord the king to order a thing of this kind?"
4 Prevalse però l'ordine del re su Ioab e sui capi dell'esercito. Allora Ioab e i capi dell'esercito lasciarono il re per andare a recensire la popolazione d'Israele.	4 The king, however, overruled Joab and the leaders of the army, so they left the king's presence in order to register the people of Israel.
5 Attraversarono il Giordano e, incominciando da Aroer e dalla città che è nel mezzo della valle di Gad, andarono verso Iazer.	5 Crossing the Jordan, they began near Aroer, south of the city in the wadi, and went in the direction of Gad toward Jazer.
6 Proseguirono in Gàlaad e verso la terra degli Hittiti, a Kades; poi passarono a Dan, e di lì verso Sidone.	6 They continued on to Gilead and to the district below Mount Hermon. Then they proceeded to Dan; from there they turned toward Sidon,
7 Giunsero alla fortezza di Tiro e in tutte le città degli Evei e dei Cananei, e finirono nel Negheb di Giuda a Bersabea.	7 going to the fortress of Tyre and to all the cities of the Hivites and Canaanites, and ending up at Beer-sheba in the Negeb of Judah.
8 Percorso tutto il paese, rientrarono a Gerusalemme in capo a nove mesi e venti giorni.	8 Thus they toured the whole country, reaching Jerusalem again after nine months and twenty days.
9 Ioab consegnò al re il numero totale del censimento del popolo: Israele contava ottocentomila uomini validi a maneggiare la spada; gli uomini di Giuda erano cinquecentomila.	9 Joab then reported to the king the number of people registered: in Israel, eight hundred thousand men fit for military service; in Judah, five hundred thousand.
10 Ma dopo aver censito il popolo Davide ebbe un rimorso nel cuore. Allora Davide disse al Signore: "Ho peccato gravemente per quello che ho fatto! Ma ora, Signore, togli il peccato del tuo servo, perché ho agito molto stoltamente!".	10 Afterward, however, David regretted having numbered the people, and said to the LORD: "I have sinned grievously in what I have done. But now, LORD, forgive the guilt of your servant, for I have been very foolish."
11 Quando al mattino Davide si alzò, la parola del Signore era stata rivolta al profeta Gad, veggente di Davide, in questi termini:	11 When David rose in the morning, the LORD had spoken to the prophet Gad, David's seer, saying:
12 "Va' a parlare a Davide: Così dice il Signore: "Tre cose io ti propongo; scegliti una di esse e io te la farò".	12 "Go and say to David, 'This is what the LORD says: I offer you three alternatives; choose one of them, and I will inflict it on you.'"
13 Gad entrò da Davide e l'informò dicendogli: "Vuoi che vengano per te sette anni di fame nel tuo paese, o tre mesi di fuga davanti al tuo avversario mentre lui t'inseguirà, o tre giorni di peste nel tuo paese? Ora rifletti e vedi quello che devo rispondere a colui che per me manda il messaggio".	13 Gad then went to David to inform him. He asked: "Do you want a three years' famine to come upon your land, or to flee from your enemy three months while he pursues you, or to have a three days' pestilence in your land? Now consider and decide what I must reply to him who sent me."
14 Davide rispose a Gad: "Mi trovo in grande angustia! Cadiamo pure in mano del Signore, perché la sua misericordia è grande, ma che io non cada nelle mani degli uomini".	14 David answered Gad: "I am in very serious difficulty. Let us fall by the hand of God, for he is most merciful; but let me not fall by the hand of man."
15 Davide scelse la peste. Era il tempo della mietitura dell'orzo. Il Signore mandò la peste in Israele, da quella mattina fino al tempo fissato. Morirono tra il popolo, da Dan fino a Bersabea, settantamila uomini.	15 Thus David chose the pestilence. Now it was the time of the wheat harvest when the plague broke out among the people. (The LORD then sent a pestilence over Israel from morning until the time appointed, and seventy thousand of the people from Dan to Beer-sheba died.)
16 L'angelo stese la sua mano verso Gerusalemme per devastarla; ma il Signore si mosse a pietà per il male e disse all'angelo che faceva strage tra il popolo: "Basta! Ora ritira la tua mano!". L'angelo del Signore si trovava presso l'aia di Araunà, il gebuseo.	16 But when the angel stretched forth his hand toward Jerusalem to destroy it, the LORD regretted the calamity and said to the angel causing the destruction among the people, "Enough now! Stay your hand." The angel of the LORD was then standing at the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.
17 Quando Davide vide l'angelo che colpiva il popolo, disse al Signore: "Ecco, io ho peccato, io ho commesso il male, ma loro che sono il gregge, che cosa hanno fatto? La tua mano sia contro di me e contro la casa di mio padre!".	17 When David saw the angel who was striking the people, he said to the LORD: "It is I who have sinned; it is I, the shepherd, who have done wrong. But these are sheep; what have they done? Punish me and my kindred."
18 Quel giorno Gad andò da Davide e gli disse: "Sali e innalza un altare al Signore nell'aia di Araunà, il gebuseo".	18 On the same day Gad went to David and said to him, "Go up and build an altar to the LORD on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite."
19 Davide vi salì secondo la parola di Gad, come aveva ordinato il Signore.	19 Following Gad's bidding, David went up as the LORD had commanded.
20 Araunà si affacciò e vide il re e i suoi cortigiani che si dirigevano da lui; allora Araunà uscì e si prostrò davanti al re con la faccia a terra.	20 Now Araunah looked down and noticed the king and his servants coming toward him while he was threshing wheat. So he went out and paid homage to the king, with face to the ground.
21 Araunà disse: "Perché il re, mio signore, è venuto dal suo servo?". Davide rispose: "Per comperare da te l'aia per costruire un altare al Signore, così il flagello sarà allontanato dal popolo".	21 Then Araunah asked, "Why does my lord the king come to his servant?" David replied, "To buy the threshing floor from you, to build an altar to the LORD, that the plague may be checked among the people."
22 Araunà rispose a Davide: "Il re, mio signore, prenda pure e offra quello che sembra bene ai suoi occhi: ecco i buoi per il sacrificio, le tregge e gli strumenti dei buoi per legna.	22 But Araunah said to David: "Let my lord the king take and offer up whatever he may wish. Here are oxen for holocausts, and threshing sledges and the yokes of the oxen for wood.
23 O re, Araunà cede tutto quanto al re". Aggiunse Araunà al re: "Che il Signore, tuo Dio, ti sia propizio!".	23 All this does Araunah give to the king." Araunah then said to the king, "May the LORD your God accept your offering."
24 Il re disse ad Araunà: "No; io voglio comperare tutto questo per il loro prezzo; non voglio offrire al Signore, mio Dio, olocausti che non mi costino nulla". Così Davide comperò l'aia e i buoi per cinquanta sicli d'argento.	24 The king, however, replied to Araunah, "No, I must pay you for it, for I cannot offer to the LORD my God holocausts that cost nothing." So David bought the threshing floor and the oxen for fifty silver shekels.
25 Davide costruì in quel luogo un altare al Signore e offrì olocausti e sacrifici pacifici. Allora il Signore ebbe pietà del paese e il flagello fu stornato da Israele.	25 Then David built an altar there to the LORD, and offered holocausts and peace offerings. The LORD granted relief to the country, and the plague was checked in Israel.
