Giosuè 11

1 - All'udire queste cose Jabin re di Asor mandò [messi] a Jobab re di Madon, al re di Semeron, al re di Acsaf,	1 When Jabin, king of Hazor, learned of this, he sent a message to Jobab, king of Madon, to the king of Shimron, to the king of Achshaph,
2 ai re del settentrione, che abitavano fra le montagne e nella pianura e a mezzogiorno di Cenerot, e a quelli che erano nella valle e nei dintorni di Dor vicino al mare,	2 and to the northern kings in the mountain regions and in the Arabah near Chinneroth, in the foothills, and in Naphath-dor to the west.
3 come pure al Cananeo che stava ad oriente e ad occidente, all'Amorreo, all'Eteo, al Ferezeo, al Jebuseo tra le montagne e all'Eveo, che abitava ai piedi dell'Ermon nella terra di Masfa.	3 These were Canaanites to the east and west, Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites and Jebusites in the mountain regions, and Hivites at the foot of Hermon in the land of Mizpah.
4 Essi uscirono in campo con le loro schiere in numero sterminato come l'arena che è sulla spiaggia del mare, con cavalli e carri innumerevoli,	4 They came out with all their troops, an army numerous as the sands on the seashore, and with a multitude of horses and chariots.
5 e stretti tutti ad un sol patto, si riunirono presso le acque di Merom per combattere contro Israele.	5 All these kings joined forces and marched to the waters of Merom, where they encamped together to fight against Israel.
6 Disse allora il Signore a Giosuè: «Non temere costoro, perchè domani, a questa stessa ora, li darò tutti dinanzi ad Israele, affinchè siano uccisi e tu taglierai i garetti ai loro cavalli e darai al fuoco i loro carri».	6 The LORD said to Joshua, "Do not fear them, for by this time tomorrow I will stretch them slain before Israel. You must hamstring their horses and burn their chariots."
7 Giosuè dunque con tutto l'esercito venne ad incontrarli alle acque di Merom ed irruppe all'improvviso sopra di essi	7 Joshua with his whole army came upon them at the waters of Merom in a surprise attack.
8 e il Signore li diede nelle mani d'Israele che li battè e li inseguì fino a Sidone la grande, e fino alle acque di Maserefot e al campo di Masfe, che è ad oriente di essa, e li battè così da non lasciarne alcun superstite,	8 The LORD delivered them into the power of the Israelites, who defeated them and pursued them to Greater Sidon, to Misrephoth-maim, and eastward to the valley of Mizpeh. They struck them all down, leaving no survivors.
9 ed eseguendo quanto gli aveva comandato il Signore tagliò i garetti ai loro cavalli e diede fuoco ai carri.	9 Joshua did to them as the LORD had commanded: he hamstrung their horses and burned their chariots.
10 Tornato quindi immediatamente su' suoi passi prese Asor e uccise di spada il suo re. Asor poi era stata per l'addietro la città capitale fra tutti quei regni.	10 At that time Joshua, turning back, captured Hazor and slew its king with the sword; for Hazor formerly was the chief of all those kingdoms.
11 Passò pure a fil di spada tutti quelli che abitavano colà, non lasciando alcun superstite, ma dando lo sterminio a tutto e appiccando il fuoco alla stessa città.	11 He also fulfilled the doom by putting every person there to the sword, till none was left alive. Hazor itself he burned.
12 Prese parimenti tutte le città dei dintorni coi loro re e ne sterminò gli abitanti, come gli aveva comandato Mosè, servo del Signore.	12 Joshua thus captured all those kings with their cities and put them to the sword, fulfilling the doom on them, as Moses, the servant of the LORD, had commanded.
13 Ad eccezione delle città poste sulle colline e sulle alture, Israele incendiò tutte le città, distruggendo col fuoco la sola fortezza di Asor.	13 However, Israel did not destroy by fire any of the cities built on raised sites, except Hazor, which Joshua burned.
14 Tutta la preda di queste città e il bestiame venne diviso dai figli d'Israele mentre furono uccisi gli uomini.	14 The Israelites took all the spoil and livestock of these cities as their booty; but the people they put to the sword, until they had exterminated the last of them, leaving none alive.
15 Come aveva comandato il Signore a Mosè suo servo e come aveva ordinato Mosè a Giosuè, questi eseguì tutto, nulla trascurando di quanto il Signore aveva comandato a Mosè.	15 As the LORD had commanded his servant Moses, so Moses commanded Joshua, and Joshua acted accordingly. He left nothing undone that the LORD had commanded Moses should be done.
16 Giosuè dunque prese tutto il territorio montuoso, quello posto a mezzogiorno, quello di Gosen, la pianura, il territorio posto ad occidente, la montagna d'Israele e le sue vallate	16 So Joshua captured all this land: the mountain regions, the entire Negeb, all the land of Goshen, the foothills, the Arabah, as well as the mountain regions and foothills of Israel,
17 e parte del monte che s'innalza verso Seir fino a Baalgad nella valle del Libano, ai piedi del monte Ermon; prese tutti i re di queste regioni, li percosse e li uccise.	17 from Mount Halak that rises toward Seir as far as Baal-gad in the Lebanon valley at the foot of Mount Hermon. All their kings he captured and put to death.
18 A lungo dovette combattere Giosuè contro questi re;	18 Joshua waged war against all these kings for a long time.
19 non ci fu città che si desse vinta dinanzi ai figli d'Israele, ad eccezione dell'Eveo, che abitava in Gabaon e però tutte furono prese con le armi.	19 With the exception of the Hivites who lived in Gibeon, no city made peace with the Israelites; all were taken in battle.
20 Era volere di Dio che tutti si ostinassero a combattere contro Israele e non avendo meritata alcuna clemenza cadessero tutti e perissero, come aveva comandato Iddio a Mosè.	20 For it was the design of the LORD to encourage them to wage war against Israel, that they might be doomed to destruction and thus receive no mercy, but be exterminated, as the LORD had commanded Moses.
21 In quel tempo Giosuè venne ed uccise gli Enacim delle montagne di Ebron, di Dabir, di Anab e di tutte le montagne di Giuda e di Israele e ne distrusse le città.	21 At that time Joshua penetrated the mountain regions and exterminated the Anakim in Hebron, Debir, Anab, the entire mountain region of Judah, and the entire mountain region of Israel. Joshua fulfilled the doom on them and on their cities,
22 Non lasciò alcun superstite della stirpe degli Enacim nel territorio dei figli d'Israele; solo ne rimasero alcuni nella città di Gaza, di Get e di Azoto.	22 so that no Anakim were left in the land of the Israelites. However, some survived in Gaza, in Gath, and in Ashdod.
23 Giosuè adunque s'impadronì di tutto il paese, come aveva promesso il Signore a Mosè e quando lo ebbe dato in possesso ai figli d'Israele, assegnando a ciascuna tribù la sua porzione, il paese riposò dalle guerre.	23 Thus Joshua captured the whole country, just as the LORD had foretold to Moses. Joshua gave it to Israel as their heritage, apportioning it among the tribes. And the land enjoyed peace.
