1 - Era ammalato un certo Lazzaro di Betania, il villaggio di Maria e Marta sorella di lei.	1 Now a man was ill, Lazarus from Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha.
2 (Maria era colei che unse d'unguento il Signore e gli asciugò i piedi coi suoi capelli, e Lazzaro, suo fratello, era malato).	2 Mary was the one who had anointed the Lord with perfumed oil and dried his feet with her hair; it was her brother Lazarus who was ill.
3 Le sue sorelle dunque mandarono a dirgli: «Signore, colui che tu ami, è ammalato».	3 So the sisters sent word to him, saying, "Master, the one you love is ill."
4 Gesù, udito ciò, rispose: «Questa malattia non è mortale, ma per la gloria di Dio, affinchè per essa sia glorificato il Figliuol di Dio».	4 When Jesus heard this he said, "This illness is not to end in death, but is for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified through it."
5 Gesù poi voleva bene a Marta, alla sorella di lei Maria e a Lazzaro.	5 Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.
6 Com'ebbe sentito ch'egli era ammalato, si trattenne ancora due giorni nello stesso luogo.	6 So when he heard that he was ill, he remained for two days in the place where he was.
7 Poi disse ai discepoli: «Torniamo in Giudea».	7 Then after this he said to his disciples, "Let us go back to Judea."
8 I discepoli gli dissero: «Rabbi, i Giudei cercavano or ora di lapidarti e tu vuoi tornare di nuovo colà?».	8 The disciples said to him, "Rabbi, the Jews were just trying to stone you, and you want to go back there?"
9 Gesù rispose: «Non sono forse dodici le ore del giorno? Se uno cammina di giorno, non inciampa, perchè egli vede la luce di questo mondo;	9 Jesus answered, "Are there not twelve hours in a day? If one walks during the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world.
10 ma se uno cammina di notte inciampa, perchè gli manca la luce».	10 But if one walks at night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him."
11 Egli parlò così, poi soggiunse: «Il nostro amico Lazzaro dorme, ma vado a svegliarlo».	11 He said this, and then told them, "Our friend Lazarus is asleep, but I am going to awaken him."
12 Allora i suoi discepoli dissero: «Signore, se dorme, guarirà».	12 So the disciples said to him, "Master, if he is asleep, he will be saved."
13 Ora Gesù aveva parlato della morte di lui, mentre essi avevano creduto che parlasse del riposo del sonno.	13 But Jesus was talking about his death, while they thought that he meant ordinary sleep.
14 Allora Gesù disse loro apertamente: «Lazzaro è morto,	14 So then Jesus said to them clearly, "Lazarus has died.
15 ed io mi rallegro per voi di non essere stato là, affinchè crediate; ma andiamo da lui».	15 And I am glad for you that I was not there, that you may believe. Let us go to him."
16 A questa parola Tommaso, chiamato Didimo, disse agli altri discepoli: «Andiamo anche noi e moriamo con lui».	16 So Thomas, called Didymus, said to his fellow disciples, "Let us also go to die with him."
17 Gesù dunque arrivò e trovò Lazzaro già da quattro giorni nella tomba.	17 When Jesus arrived, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days.
18 Betania distava da Gerusalemme circa quindici stadii;	18 Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, only about two miles away.
19 molti Giudei erano venuti da Marta e da Maria per consolarle del loro fratello.	19 And many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them about their brother.
20 Marta, appena seppe della venuta di Gesù, gli andò incontro, mentre Maria se ne stava in casa.	20 When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went to meet him; but Mary sat at home.
21 Marta disse a Gesù: «Signore, se tu fossi stato qui, mio fratello non sarebbe morto;	21 Martha said to Jesus, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.
22 ma ora so che tutto quello che tu domanderai a Dio, Dio te lo concederà».	22 (But) even now I know that whatever you ask of God, God will give you."
23 Gesù disse: «Tuo fratello risorgerà».	23 Jesus said to her, "Your brother will rise."
24 Marta rispose: «So che risusciterà nella resurrezione all'ultimo giorno».	24 Martha said to him, "I know he will rise, in the resurrection on the last day."
25 Gesù soggiunse: «Io sono la resurrezione e la vita; chi crede in me quand'anche fosse morto vivrà,	25 Jesus told her, "I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live,
26 e chi vive e crede in me non morrà in eterno. Credi tu questo?».	26 and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?"
27 Ella rispose: «Sì, Signore, ho sempre creduto che tu sei il Cristo, il Figliuolo di Dio, che sei venuto in questo mondo».	27 She said to him, "Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one who is coming into the world."
28 Detto questo, se ne andò a chiamare Maria, sua sorella, dicendole piano: «Il Maestro è qua e ti chiama».	28 When she had said this, she went and called her sister Mary secretly, saying, "The teacher is here and is asking for you."
29 Non appena ebbe udito, ella si levò e andò a lui,	29 As soon as she heard this, she rose quickly and went to him.
30 che non era ancora entrato nel villaggio, ma stava tuttora nel luogo dove Marta l'aveva incontrato.	30 For Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was still where Martha had met him.
31 I Giudei poi, che erano con essa in casa e la confortavano, quando videro Maria alzarsi in fretta e uscire, la seguirono, dicendo: «Va' al sepolcro a piangere».	31 So when the Jews who were with her in the house comforting her saw Mary get up quickly and go out, they followed her, presuming that she was going to the tomb to weep there.
32 Maria, giunta al luogo dov'era Gesù, al vederlo, si gettò ai suoi piedi e gli disse: «Signore, se tu fossi stato qui, mio fratello non sarebbe morto!».	32 When Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said to him, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died."
33 Gesù vedendo lei piangere e con lei piangere anche i Giudei che l'accompagnavano, fremette in ispirito e si turbò.	33 When Jesus saw her weeping and the Jews who had come with her weeping, he became perturbed and deeply troubled,
34 Poi domandò: «Dove l'avete posto?». Gli risposero: «Signore, vieni e vedi».	34 and said, "Where have you laid him?" They said to him, "Sir, come and see."
35 E Gesù pianse.	35 And Jesus wept.
36 Allora i Giudei dissero: «Guarda, quanto l'amava!».	36 So the Jews said, "See how he loved him."
37 Ma alcuni di loro soggiungevano: «Non poteva costui che aprì gli occhi al cieco nato, fare che questo non morisse?».	37 But some of them said, "Could not the one who opened the eyes of the blind man have done something so that this man would not have died?"
38 Allora Gesù, fremendo di nuovo in se stesso, venne al sepolcro, ch'era una grotta con una pietra sovrapposta ad essa.	38 So Jesus, perturbed again, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone lay across it.
39 Gesù disse: «Togliete la pietra!». E a Marta, la sorella del morto, che gli osservava: «Signore, già puzza, perchè da quattro giorni è lì»,	39 Jesus said, "Take away the stone." Martha, the dead man's sister, said to him, "Lord, by now there will be a stench; he has been dead for four days."
40 Gesù rispose: «Non ti ho detto che, se credi, vedrai la gloria di Dio?».	40 Jesus said to her, "Did I not tell you that if you believe you will see the glory of God?"
41 Tolsero dunque la pietra, e Gesù, alzati gli occhi al cielo, disse: «Padre, ti ringrazio d'avermi ascoltato.	41 So they took away the stone. And Jesus raised his eyes and said, "Father, I thank you for hearing me.
42 Io sapevo che tu mi ascolti sempre, ma l'ho detto per il popolo che mi circonda, affinchè creda che tu mi hai mandato».	42 I know that you always hear me; but because of the crowd here I have said this, that they may believe that you sent me."
43 E detto questo con gran voce esclamò: «Lazzaro, vieni fuori!».	43 And when he had said this, he cried out in a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out!"
44 E il morto uscì; coi piedi e le mani legate da fasce ed il viso coperto da un sudario. Gesù disse loro: «Slegatelo e lasciatelo andare».	44 The dead man came out, tied hand and foot with burial bands, and his face was wrapped in a cloth. So Jesus said to them, "Untie him and let him go."
45 Così molti Giudei, venuti da Maria e da Marta, avendo veduto quanto aveva fatto Gesù, credettero in lui.	45 Now many of the Jews who had come to Mary and seen what he had done began to believe in him.
46 Ma alcuni di loro andarono dai Farisei e raccontarono quel che Gesù aveva fatto.	46 But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.
47 I pontefici e i Farisei radunarono pertanto il Sinedrio, e dicevano: «Che facciamo? Quest'uomo opera molti miracoli.	47 So the chief priests and the Pharisees convened the Sanhedrin and said, "What are we going to do? This man is performing many signs.
48 Se lo lasciamo fare tutti crederanno in lui, e verranno i Romani e distruggeranno la nostra città e la nostra nazione».	48 If we leave him alone, all will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our land and our nation."
49 Allora uno di essi, di nome Caifa, che in quell'anno era sommo sacerdote, disse loro: «Voi non capite nulla	49 But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, "You know nothing,
50 e non riflettete che val meglio che per il popolo muoia un solo uomo, e non perisca l'intera nazione».	50 nor do you consider that it is better for you that one man should die instead of the people, so that the whole nation may not perish."
51 Egli disse ciò non da se stesso, ma perchè essendo in quell'anno sommo sacerdote, profetò che Gesù doveva morire per la nazione;	51 He did not say this on his own, but since he was high priest for that year, he prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the nation,
52 e non soltanto per la nazione, ma anche per raccogliere insieme i figliuoli di Dio dispersi.	52 and not only for the nation, but also to gather into one the dispersed children of God.
53 Così da quel giorno deliberarono d'ucciderlo.	53 So from that day on they planned to kill him.
54 Perciò Gesù oramai non s'intratteneva in pubblico presso i Giudei; bensì se ne andò nella regione vicina al deserto, in una città di nome Efrem, dove soggiornò coi suoi discepoli.	54 So Jesus no longer walked about in public among the Jews, but he left for the region near the desert, to a town called Ephraim, and there he remained with his disciples.
55 S'avvicinava frattanto la Pasqua dei Giudei, e molti di quella regione andarono a Gerusalemme prima della Pasqua per purificarsi.	55 Now the Passover of the Jews was near, and many went up from the country to Jerusalem before Passover to purify themselves.
56 E cercavano di Gesù, e stando nel tempio si domandavano a vicenda: «Che ne dite? Verrà egli alla festa?».	56 They looked for Jesus and said to one another as they were in the temple area, "What do you think? That he will not come to the feast?"
57 Intanto i Pontefici e i Farisei avevano dato ordine che, se qualcuno sapeva dove fosse, lo riferisse, affinchè lo si potesse prendere.	57 For the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where he was, he should inform them, so that they might arrest him.
