1 - In uno di quei giorni, mentre insegnava al popolo nel tempio e annunziava la buona novella,	1 Now it happened that one day while he was teaching the people in the Temple and proclaiming thegood news, the chief priests and the scribes came up, together with the elders,
2 Sopraggiunsero i principi dei Sacerdoti e gli Scribi con gli anziani e gli chiesero: «Dicci con quale autorità fai tu queste cose, oppure chi ti ha dato questa autorità?».	2 and spoke to him. 'Tel us,' they said, 'what authority have you for acting like this? Or who gives youthis authority?'
3 Ed egli rispose loro: «Anch'io vi farò una domanda. Rispondetemi:	3 In reply he said to them, 'And I will ask you a question, just one. Tel me:
4 - Il battesimo di Giovanni veniva dal cielo o dagli uomini? -».	4 John's baptism: what was its origin, heavenly or human?'
5 Ed essi facevan tra loro queste considerazioni: «Se diciamo che veniva dal cielo, ci dirà: - Perchè dunque non gli avete creduto? -,	5 And they debated this way among themselves, 'If we say heavenly, he will retort, "Why did you refuseto believe him?";
6 e se diciamo che veniva dagli uomini, tutto il popolo ci lapiderà, persuaso com'è che Giovanni fosse un profeta».	6 and if we say human, the whole people wil stone us, for they are convinced that John was a prophet.'
7 Perciò risposero che non sapevano donde venisse.	7 So their reply was that they did not know where it came from.
8 E Gesù replicò loro: «Neppure io vi dico con quale autorità faccio queste cose».	8 And Jesus said to them, 'Nor wil I tell you my authority for acting like this.'
9 Poi cominciò a raccontare al popolo questa parabola: «Un uomo piantò una vigna e datala in affitto a dei coloni, se n'andò per un lungo viaggio.	9 And he went on to tel the people this parable, 'A man planted a vineyard and leased it to tenants, andwent abroad for a long while.
10 A suo tempo, mandò ai coloni un servo, perchè gli dessero conto dei prodotti della vigna; ma i coloni lo picchiarono e lo rimandarono a mani vuote.	10 When the right time came, he sent a servant to the tenants to get his share of the produce of thevineyard. But the tenants thrashed him, and sent him away empty-handed.
11 Mandò ancora un altro servo; ma essi, picchiato e vituperato anche costui, lo rimandarono a mani vuote.	11 But he went on to send a second servant; they thrashed him too and treated him shamefully and senthim away empty-handed.
12 Egli allora ne mandò un terzo; ed essi, ferito anche lui, lo scannarono.	12 He still went on to send a third; they wounded this one too, and threw him out.
13 Allora disse il padrone della vigna: - Che farò? Manderò il mio figliuolo diletto; forse, quando lo vedranno, avranno rispetto per lui. -	13 Then the owner of the vineyard thought, "What am I to do? I wil send them my own beloved son.Perhaps they wil respect him."
14 Ma i coloni, vistolo appena, complottaron tra loro e dissero: - Costui è l'erede; uccidiamolo e l'eredità sarà nostra. -	14 But when the tenants saw him they put their heads together saying, "This is the heir, let us kil him sothat the inheritance wil be ours."
15 E, cacciatolo fuor della vigna, lo uccisero. Ora che farà di costoro il padrone della vigna?	15 So they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. 'Now what wil the owner of the vineyard do tothem?
16 Verrà, sterminerà quei coloni e darà ad altri la vigna». Ma essi avendo udito ciò, dissero: «Non sia mai».	16 He wil come and make an end of these tenants and give the vineyard to others.' Hearing this theysaid, 'God forbid!'
17 Egli però, fissatili, disse: «Che vuol dire dunque quanto sta scritto: La pietra rigettata dai costruttori è divenuta pietra angolare ?	17 But he looked hard at them and said, 'Then what does this text in the scriptures mean: The stonewhich the builders rejected has become the cornerstone?
18 Chiunque cadrà su quella pietra sarà sfracellato, ed essa stritolerà colui sul quale cade».	18 Anyone who fal s on that stone will be dashed to pieces; anyone it fal s on wil be crushed.'
19 Gli Scribi e i principi dei Sacerdoti cercarono di mettergli immediatamente le mani addosso, ma ebbero paura del popolo, perchè capiron che questa parabola l'aveva raccontata per loro.	19 And the scribes and the chief priests would have liked to lay hands on him that very moment,because they realised that this parable was aimed at them, but they were afraid of the people.
20 Essi spiandolo gli mandarono insidiatori, i quali si fingessero giusti per sorprenderlo in fallo nella sua conversazione, e poterlo così dare in mano delle autorità e in balìa del preside.	20 So they awaited their opportunity and sent agents to pose as upright men, and to catch him out insomething he might say and so enable them to hand him over to the jurisdiction and authority of the governor.
21 Costoro lo interrogarono: «Maestro, sappiamo che tu parli e insegni rettamente, e non guardi in viso a nessuno, ma insegni la via di Dio con verità.	21 They put to him this question, 'Master, we know that you say and teach what is right; you favour noone, but teach the way of God in al honesty.
22 È lecito a noi pagare il tributo a Cesare, o no?».	22 Is it permissible for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?'
23 Egli, conoscendo la loro astuzia, rispose loro: «Perchè mi tentate?	23 But he was aware of their cunning and said,
24 Mostratemi un danaro. Di chi è l'immagine e l'iscrizione?». Gli risposero: «Di Cesare».	24 'Show me a denarius. Whose portrait and title are on it?' They said, 'Caesar's.'
25 «Rendete dunque», soggiunse loro «a Cesare quel che è di Cesare e a Dio quel che è di Dio».	25 He said to them, 'Well then, pay Caesar what belongs to Caesar -- and God what belongs to God.'
26 E così in nessuna parola potevano trovare un pretesto, davanti al popolo, e ammirati della sua risposta, stettero zitti.	26 They were unable to catch him out in anything he had to say in public; they were amazed at hisanswer and were silenced.
27 Alcuni Sadducei, i quali negano che vi sia la resurrezione, s'accostarono a lui e lo interrogarono	27 Some Sadducees -- those who argue that there is no resurrection -- approached him and they putthis question to him,
28 così: «Maestro, Mosè ha lasciato scritto: Se un uomo, avendo moglie, muore senza lasciare figli, suo fratello ne sposi la vedova e susciti prole al fratello .	28 'Master, Moses prescribed for us, if a man's married brother dies childless, the man must marry thewidow to raise up children for his brother.
29 Ora c'erano sette fratelli; il primo prese moglie e morì senza figliuoli.	29 Wel then, there were seven brothers; the first, having married a wife, died childless.
30 Il secondo ne sposò la vedova ed egli pure morì senza figliuoli.	30 The second
31 Il terzo la sposò e lo stesso fecero tutt'e sette, che morirono senza lasciar figliuoli.	31 and then the third married the widow. And the same with al seven, they died leaving no children.
32 Ultima di tutti, morì anche la donna.	32 Finally the woman herself died.
33 Di chi dunque, nella resurrezione, sarà moglie, mentre lo è stata di tutt'e sette?».	33 Now, at the resurrection, whose wife will she be, since she had been married to all seven?'
34 Gesù rispose loro: «I figli di questo mondo si sposano e si maritano;	34 Jesus replied, 'The children of this world take wives and husbands,
35 ma coloro che saranno ritenuti degni del mondo futuro e della resurrezione dei morti, non si ammoglieranno e non si mariteranno;	35 but those who are judged worthy of a place in the other world and in the resurrection from the deaddo not marry
36 perchè non potranno più morire; sono come gli angeli e son figliuoli di Dio, essendo figliuoli della resurrezione.	36 because they can no longer die, for they are the same as the angels, and being children of theresurrection they are children of God.
37 Che poi i morti abbiano a risorgere lo dichiarò anche Mosè nel passo del Roveto , quando chiama il Signore il Dio d'Abramo, il Dio di Isacco e il Dio di Giacobbe.	37 And Moses himself implies that the dead rise again, in the passage about the bush where he cal s theLord the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.
38 Ora Egli non è un Dio di morti, ma di viventi; poichè, per lui, tutti son vivi».	38 Now he is God, not of the dead, but of the living; for to him everyone is alive.'
39 Alcuni degli Scribi soggiunsero: «Maestro, hai detto bene».	39 Some scribes then spoke up. They said, 'Wel put, Master.'
40 E non osarono più fargli domanda.	40 They did not dare to ask him any more questions.
41 Egli domandò loro: «Come mai si dice che il Cristo sia figlio di David?	41 He then said to them, 'How can people maintain that the Christ is son of David?
42 Mentre David stesso nel libro dei Salmi dice: Il Signore ha detto al mio Signore: - Siedi alla mia destra,	42 Why, David himself says in the Book of Psalms: The Lord declared to my Lord, take your seat at myright hand,
43 finchè io abbia posto i tuoi nemici come sgabelli ai tuoi piedi -?	43 til I have made your enemies your footstool.
44 Dunque David lo chiama Signore; come mai allora può essere suo figliuolo?».	44 David here cal s him Lord; how then can he be his son?'
45 E mentre tutto il popolo lo stava ascoltando, egli disse a' suoi discepoli:	45 While al the people were listening he said to the disciples,
46 «Guardatevi dagli Scribi, i quali passeggiano volentieri in lunghe vesti, e amano le riverenze nelle piazze e i primi seggi nelle sinagoghe e i primi posti nei conviti;	46 'Beware of the scribes who like to walk about in long robes and love to be greeted respectfully in themarket squares, to take the front seats in the synagogues and the places of honour at banquets,
47 essi che divorano le case delle vedove e pregano a lungo per farsi vedere. A costoro toccherà una condanna più rigorosa».	47 who devour the property of widows, and for show offer long prayers. The more severe will be thesentence they receive.'
