Then David went into Nob, to the priest Ahimelech. And Ahimelech was astonished that David had arrived. And he said to him, “Why are you alone, and no one is with you?”1 και ανεστη δαυιδ και απηλθεν και ιωναθαν εισηλθεν εις την πολιν
And David said to the priest Ahimelech: “The king has instructed to me a word, and he said: ‘Let no one know the matter about which you have been sent by me, and what type of instructions I have given to you. For I have also summoned servants to one and another place.’2 και ερχεται δαυιδ εις νομβα προς αβιμελεχ τον ιερεα και εξεστη αβιμελεχ τη απαντησει αυτου και ειπεν αυτω τι οτι συ μονος και ουθεις μετα σου
Now therefore, if you have anything at hand, even five loaves of bread, or whatever you may find, give it to me.”3 και ειπεν δαυιδ τω ιερει ο βασιλευς εντεταλται μοι ρημα σημερον και ειπεν μοι μηδεις γνωτω το ρημα περι ου εγω αποστελλω σε και υπερ ου εντεταλμαι σοι και τοις παιδαριοις διαμεμαρτυρημαι εν τω τοπω τω λεγομενω θεου πιστις φελλανι αλεμωνι
And the priest, responding to David, said to him: “I have no common bread at hand, but only holy bread. Are the young men clean, especially from women?”4 και νυν ει εισιν υπο την χειρα σου πεντε αρτοι δος εις χειρα μου το ευρεθεν
And David responded to the priest, and said to him: “Indeed, as concerns being with women, we have abstained since yesterday and the day before, when we departed, and so the vessels of the young men have been holy. And although, this journey has been defiled, it will also be sanctified today as concerns the vessels.”5 και απεκριθη ο ιερευς τω δαυιδ και ειπεν ουκ εισιν αρτοι βεβηλοι υπο την χειρα μου οτι αλλ' η αρτοι αγιοι εισιν ει πεφυλαγμενα τα παιδαρια εστιν απο γυναικος και φαγεται
Therefore, the priest gave to him sanctified bread. For there was no bread there, but only the bread of the Presence, which had been taken away from before the face of the Lord, so that fresh loaves might be set up.6 και απεκριθη δαυιδ τω ιερει και ειπεν αυτω αλλα απο γυναικος απεσχημεθα εχθες και τριτην ημεραν εν τω εξελθειν με εις οδον γεγονε παντα τα παιδαρια ηγνισμενα και αυτη η οδος βεβηλος διοτι αγιασθησεται σημερον δια τα σκευη μου
Now a certain man among the servants of Saul was there on that day, inside the tabernacle of the Lord. And his name was Doeg, an Edomite, the most powerful among the shepherds of Saul.7 και εδωκεν αυτω αβιμελεχ ο ιερευς τους αρτους της προθεσεως οτι ουκ ην εκει αρτος οτι αλλ' η αρτοι του προσωπου οι αφηρημενοι εκ προσωπου κυριου παρατεθηναι αρτον θερμον η ημερα ελαβεν αυτους
Then David said to Ahimelech: “Do you have, here at hand, a spear or a sword? For I did not take my own sword, or my own weapons with me. For the word of the king was urgent.”8 και εκει ην εν των παιδαριων του σαουλ εν τη ημερα εκεινη συνεχομενος νεεσσαραν ενωπιον κυριου και ονομα αυτω δωηκ ο συρος νεμων τας ημιονους σαουλ
And the priest said: “Behold, here is the sword of Goliath, the Philistine, whom you struck down in the Valley of Terebinth. It is wrapped up in a cloak behind the ephod. If you wish to take this, take it. For there is nothing else here except this.” And David said, “There is nothing else like this, so give it to me.”9 και ειπεν δαυιδ προς αβιμελεχ ιδε ει εστιν ενταυθα υπο την χειρα σου δορυ η ρομφαια οτι την ρομφαιαν μου και τα σκευη ουκ ειληφα εν τη χειρι μου οτι ην το ρημα του βασιλεως κατα σπουδην
And so, David rose up, and he fled on that day from the face of Saul. And he went to Achish, the king of Gath.10 και ειπεν ο ιερευς ιδου η ρομφαια γολιαθ του αλλοφυλου ον επαταξας εν τη κοιλαδι ηλα και αυτη ενειλημενη εν ιματιω ει ταυτην λημψη σεαυτω λαβε οτι ουκ εστιν ετερα παρεξ ταυτης ενταυθα και ειπεν δαυιδ ιδου ουκ εστιν ωσπερ αυτη δος μοι αυτην
And the servants of Achish, when they had seen David, said to him: “Is this not David, the king of the land? Were they not singing about him, while dancing, saying, ‘Saul has struck down a thousand, and David ten thousand?’ ”11 και εδωκεν αυτην αυτω και ανεστη δαυιδ και εφυγεν εν τη ημερα εκεινη εκ προσωπου σαουλ και ηλθεν δαυιδ προς αγχους βασιλεα γεθ
Then David took these words to his heart, and he became exceedingly afraid before the face of Achish, the king of Gath.12 και ειπαν οι παιδες αγχους προς αυτον ουχι ουτος δαυιδ ο βασιλευς της γης ουχι τουτω εξηρχον αι χορευουσαι λεγουσαι επαταξεν σαουλ εν χιλιασιν αυτου και δαυιδ εν μυριασιν αυτου
And he altered his mouth before them, and he slipped down between their hands. And he stumbled against the doors of the gate. And his spit flowed down his beard.13 και εθετο δαυιδ τα ρηματα εν τη καρδια αυτου και εφοβηθη σφοδρα απο προσωπου αγχους βασιλεως γεθ
And Achish said to his servants: “You saw that the man is insane. Why did you bring him to me?14 και ηλλοιωσεν το προσωπον αυτου ενωπιον αυτου και προσεποιησατο εν τη ημερα εκεινη και ετυμπανιζεν επι ταις θυραις της πολεως και παρεφερετο εν ταις χερσιν αυτου και επιπτεν επι τας θυρας της πυλης και τα σιελα αυτου κατερρει επι τον πωγωνα αυτου
Or do we have need of those who are mad, so that you would bring in this one, to behave madly in my presence? How did this man get into my house?”15 και ειπεν αγχους προς τους παιδας αυτου ιδου ιδετε ανδρα επιλημπτον ινα τι εισηγαγετε αυτον προς με
η ελαττουμαι επιλημπτων εγω οτι εισαγειοχατε αυτον επιλημπτευεσθαι προς με ουτος ουκ εισελευσεται εις οικιαν
