Now the Philistines, gathering their troops for battle, assembled at Socoh of Judah. And they made camp between Socoh and Azekah, within the borders of Dammim.1 E raunate gli Filistei le sue compagnie a battaglia, raunaronsi in Soco di Giuda; e puosero il campo in tra Soco (di Giuda) e Azeca ne' confini di Dommim.
But Saul and the sons of Israel, having gathered together, went to the Valley of Terebinth. And they positioned the army so as to fight against the Philistines.2 E Saul ei suoi uomini, raunati, convennero nella valle della quercia; e dirizzarono la schiera a combattere contro ai Filistei.
And the Philistines were standing on a mountain on the one side, and Israel was standing on a mountain on the other side. And there was a valley between them.3 I quali stavano sul monte da questa parte, e Israel stava sopra lo monte dall' altra parte; e la valle era tra loro (e il campo de' Filistei).
And there went out from the camp of the Philistines, a man of illegitimate birth, named Goliath of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a palm.4 E del campo de' Filistei uscie uno spurio, il quale avea nome Goliat, di Get, alto sei cubiti e una spanna.
And he had a helmet of brass upon his head, and he was clothed with a breastplate of scales. Moreover, the weight of his breastplate was five thousand shekels of brass.5 E avea in capo uno elmo d'acciaio, ed era vestito d' una panciera magliata; il peso della panciera sua era cinque milia sicli d'acciaio.
And he had plates of brass on his lower legs, and a small shield of brass was covering his shoulders.6 E avea le gambiere di bronzo, e lo elmo copria le sue spalle.
Now the shaft of his spear was like the beam used by a weaver. And the iron of his spear held six hundred shekels of iron. And his armor bearer went before him.7 L'asta della sua lancia era quasi come il subbio de' tessitori, e il ferro della lancia avea secento sicli di ferro; e il suo scudiere andava innanzi.
And standing still, he cried out to the battle lines of Israel, and he said to them: “Why have you arrived, prepared for battle? Am I not a Philistine, and are you not the servants of Saul? Choose one man from among you, and let him descend to do battle alone.8 E istando, gridava verso (il campo e) le compagnie d' Israel, e dicea loro: perchè siete voi venuti apparecchiati alla battaglia? Non sono io Filisteo, e voi servi di Saul? Eleggete di voi uno uomo, e discenda alla battaglia singolare.
If he is able to fight with me and to strike me down, we will be your servants. But if I will prevail over him, and strike him down, you will be the servants, and you will serve us.”9 Se potrà combattere meco e abbatterammi, saremo vostri servi; ma se io vincerò e abbatterò lui, voi servirete noi.
And the Philistine was saying: “I have reproached the troops of Israel today. Present a man to me, and let him undertake a fight against me alone.”10 E dicea il Filisteo: io hoe ducto in obbrobrio oggi le compagnie d' Israel: datemi uno uomo, e che faccia meco singolare battaglia.
And Saul and all the Israelites, hearing these words of the Philistine in this manner, were stupefied and exceedingly afraid.11 E udendo Saul, e tutti quelli d' Israel, le parole di quello Filisteo, erano stupefatti, e temeano molto.
Now David was the son of an Ephrathite man, the one mentioned above, from Bethlehem of Judah, whose name was Jesse. He had eight sons, and during the days of Saul, he was an elderly man, and of great age among men.12 E David era figliuolo d' uno uomo di. Efrata, del quale è detto di sopra, di Betleem di Giuda, il quale avea nome Isai, il quale avea otto figliuoli, ed era uno uomo, nel tempo di Saul, antico e grande tra gli uomini.
Now his three eldest sons followed Saul into battle. And the names of his three sons, who went to the battle, were Eliab, the firstborn, and the second, Abinadab, and the third Shammah.13 E tre suoi figliuoli maggiori sì andarono, dopo Saul, nell' oste; e gli nomi di quelli tre figliuoli, che andarono nell' cste, sono questi: Eliab il primogenito, il secondo Aminadab, il terzo Samma.
But David was the youngest. Therefore, when the three eldest had followed Saul,14 E David era il minore. E seguitando li tre maggiori Saul,
David went away from Saul, and he returned, so that he might pasture the flock of his father at Bethlehem.15 David si ritornò da Saul a pascere le gregge del suo padre in Betleem.
Truly, the Philistine advanced morning and evening, and he stood forth, for forty days.16 E il Filisteo procedea la mattina e al vespero, e istette XL dì.
Now Jesse said to his son David: “Take, for your brothers, an ephah of cooked grain, and these ten loaves, and hurry to the camp, to your brothers.17 E Isai disse al suo figliuolo David: togli, e porta a' fratelli tuoi uno efi pieno di polenta, e questi dieci pani, e corri nell' oste a' tuoi fratelli,
And you shall carry these ten little cheeses to the tribune. And visit your brothers, to see if they are doing well. And learn with whom they have been stationed.”18 e queste dieci forme di cacio (le quali) darai al tribuno (ovver caporale); e corri nell'oste a tuoi fratelli. Saprai, se egli stanno bene; e saprai, con cui sono ordinati.
But they were in the valley of Terebinth, with Saul and all the sons of Israel, fighting against the Philistines.19 E Saul e loro, e tutti li figliuoli d' Israel, nella valle della quercia combatteano contro li Filistei.
And so, David rose up in the morning, and he commended the flock to the caretaker. And he went away burdened, just as Jesse had instructed him. And he went to the place of the battle line, and to the army, which, in going out to fight, was shouting in the conflict.20 E David si levò la mattina, e raccomandò il gregge ad una guardia; e caricato se n'andò, come (il padre suo) Isai gli avea comandato. E venne al luogo di Magala e all' oste, il quale oste era con rumore entrato alla battaglia.
For Israel had positioned their troops, but the Philistines also had prepared themselves against them.21 Però che Israel avea dirizzata la schiera, e i Filistei dall' altra parte erano apparecchiati.
Then, leaving the items that he had brought under the hand of the keeper of baggage, David ran to the place of the conflict. And he was asking if all was going well with his brothers.22 Onde lasciato David le cose che portava ad uno che le portasse dove ch' era, corse al luogo della battaglia; e domandava, se tutte le cose istavano bene verso de' suoi fratelli.
And while he was still speaking with them, there appeared the man of spurious descent, whose name was Goliath, the Philistine of Gath, ascending from the camp of the Philistines. And he was speaking in these same words, which David heard.23 E favellando ancora con esso loro, apparve quello uomo ispurio, il quale avea nome Goliat, Filisteo, di Get, ascendendo del campo de' Filistei. E dicendo egli quelle medesime parole, David l' ebbe udite.
Then all the Israelites, when they had seen the man, fled from his face, fearing him greatly.24 E tutti quelli d' Israel, udendo quello uomo, fuggirono dal suo cospetto, temendo lui troppo,
And someone of Israel said: “Have you seen this man, who has risen up. For he ascended in order to reproach Israel. Therefore, the man who will strike him down, the king will enrich with great wealth, and will give to him his daughter, and will cause his father’s house to be free of tribute in Israel.”25 E uno d'Israel disse: or non hai tu veduto quello uomo? Egli è venuto ad obbrobriare Israel. E però qualunque uomo l'uccidesse, il re farebbe ricco di molte ricchezze, e darebbegli la sua figliuola per moglie, e la casa del suo padre farebbe libera in Israel dal tributo.
And David spoke to the men who were standing with him, saying: “What will be given to the man who will have struck down this Philistine, and who will have taken away the disgrace from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should reproach the soldiers of the living God?”26 E David disse a quelli uomini i quali istavano con lui: che sarà dato a quello uomo che ucciderà questo Filisteo, e torrà la vergogna d' Israel? chi è egli questo Filisteo incirconciso, il quale improperò la schiera di Dio vivente?
Then the people repeated to him the same words, saying, “These things shall be given to the man who will have struck him down.”27 E il popolo gli recitava quelle medesime parole: questo sarà dato a chi l'ucciderà.
Now when Eliab, his eldest brother, had heard this, as he was speaking with the others, he became angry against David, and he said: “Why did you come here? And why did you leave behind those few sheep in the wilderness? I know your pride and the wickedness of your heart, that you have come down so that you might see the battle.”28 La qual cosa udendo il suo fratello maggiore Eliab, che dicea con altrui, irossi contro a David, e disse: perchè venisti, per lasciare quelle poche pecore nel deserto? Io conosco la tua superbia e la nequizia del tuo cuore; chè tu se' venuto a vedere la battaglia.
And David said: “What have I done? Is there any word against me?”29 E David disse: che ho io fatto? Non ho io ambasciata?
And he turned away from him a little, toward another. And he asked the same question. And the people responded to him as before.30 E partissi uno poco da lui, e andò ad uno altro, e disse quelle medesime parole. E rispuosegli il popolo come prima.
Now the words that David had spoken were heard and reported in the sight of Saul.31 E le parole, che David avea dette, furono udite, e significate nel cospetto di Saul.
When he had been led to Saul, he said to him: “Let no one lose heart over him. I, your servant, shall go and fight against the Philistine.”32 Al quale essendo menato, egli disse: non si disperi cuore di persona, di questo Filisteo; io andrò, e combatterò con lui.
And Saul said to David: “You are not able to withstand this Philistine, nor to fight against him. For you are a boy, but he has been a warrior from his boyhood.”33 E Saul rispuose: non potresti resistere a questo Filisteo nel combattere contro a lui; però che tu se' fanciullo, e questo è buono battagliere dalla sua gioventudine.
And David said to Saul: “Your servant was pasturing the flock of his father. And there approached a lion or a bear, and it took a ram from the midst of the flock.34 E David disse a Saul: il tuo servo pasceva il gregge del suo padre; e venia il leone o l' orso, e toglievami il montone di mezzo lo gregge.
And I pursued after them, and I struck them, and I rescued from their mouth. And they rose up against me. And I caught them by the throat, and I strangled and killed them.35 E io andava loro dietro, e uccidevagli, e liberava la preda della bocca loro; e loro si rivolgeano contro a me, e io gli pigliava il mento, (e teneagli,) e sforzavagli, e uccideagli.
For I, your servant, have killed both lion and bear. And so this uncircumcised Philistine, too, will be like one of them. Now I will go and take away the reproach of the people. For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, who has dared to curse the army of the living God?”36 E ha morto il servo tuo il leone e l'orso; e sarà questo Filisteo incirconciso, sì come uno di quegli. Ah ora io anderò, e leverò la vergogna dal popolo: però che è questo Filisteo incirconciso, che hae prosomuto di maledire lo esercito di Dio vivente.
And David said, “The Lord who rescued me from the hand of the lion, and from the hand of the bear, he himself will free me from the hand of this Philistine.” Then Saul said to David, “Go, and may the Lord be with you.”37 E disse David: il Signore che mi scampò della bocca del lione e dell' orso, egli libererà me delle mani di questo Filisteo. E Saul disse a David: va, e dominedio sia teco.
And Saul clothed David with his garments. And he placed a helmet of brass upon his head, and he clothed him with a breastplate.38 E Saul vestì David delle sue vestimenta, e puose sopra il suo capo uno elmo d' acciaio, e vestillo d'una panciera.
Then David, having girded his sword over his armor, began to see if he could walk in the armor. But he was not accustomed to it. And David said to Saul: “I cannot move about in this way. For I am not used to it.” And he put them aside.39 E cinto di sopra della sua veste la spada, cominciò a provare se potesse andare così armato; però che non avea l'usanza. E disse David a Saul: io non posso andare, però ch' io none son usato. E postole giuso,
And he took up his staff, which he held always in his hands. And he chose for himself five very smooth stones from the torrent. And he put them into the shepherd’s bag that he had with him. And he took up a sling in his hand. And he went out against the Philistine.40 tolse il suo bastone il quale sempre portava in mano, e iscielse cinque politissime pietre del fiume; e puosele nello sacculo pastorale lo quale avea seco, e in mano tolse una rombola (ovver fionda), e andossene verso il Filisteo.
And the Philistine, advancing, went and drew near against David. And his armor bearer was before him.41 E questo Filisteo andava qua e là, appressandosi a David, e il suo scudiere dinanzi a lui.
And when the Philistine had seen and considered David, he despised him. For he was a youth, ruddy and of handsome appearance.42 E guardando il Filisteo, e veggendo David, disprezzollo. Ed era David giovane, rosso, bello in aspetto.
And the Philistine said to David, “Am I a dog, that you approach against me with a staff?” And the Philistine cursed David by his gods.43 E disse il Filisteo a David: or sono io uno cane, chè tu sei venuto a me con il bastone? E il Filisteo maledisse David negli suoi idi.
And he said to David, “Come to me, and I will give your flesh to the birds of the air, and to the beasts of the earth.”44 E disse a David: vieni a me, e darò le carni tue agli uccelli del cielo e alle bestie della terra.
But David said to the Philistine: “You approach me with sword, and spear, and shield. But I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, which you have reproached.45 E David disse al Filisteo: e tu vieni a me colla spada e con la lancia e con lo scudo; e io vengo a te nel nome del Signore Iddio degli eserciti delle schiere d' Israel, le quali tu hae maledette
Today, the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you down. And I will take your head from you. And today, I will give the carcasses of the camp of the Philistines to the birds of the air, and to the beasts of the earth, so that all the earth may know that God is with Israel.46 oggi, e darà te il Signore nelle mie mani, e ucciderotti, e taglierotti il tuo capo; e darò oggi li corpi dell' oste de' Filistei alli volatili del cielo e alle bestie della terra, acciò che tutta la terra sappia ch' egli è il Signore Iddio d' Israel.
And this entire assembly will know that the Lord does not save by sword, nor by spear. For this is his war, and he will deliver you into our hands.”47 E tutta questa congregazione cognosca che Iddio non salva in spada nè in lancia; però che la battaglia è sua, e darà voi nelle nostre mani.
Then, when the Philistine had risen up, and was approaching, and was drawing near against David, David hurried and ran to the fight against the Philistine.48 E levatosi suso il Filisteo, e venendosi appressando a David, affrettossi David, e corse alla battaglia incontro al Filisteo.
And he put his hand into his bag, and took out one stone. And swinging it around, he cast it with the sling and struck the Philistine on the forehead. And the stone became imbedded in his forehead. And he fell on his face, upon the ground.49 E mise mano nello sacculo, e tolse una pietra; e girando la rombola, gettò e ferì il Filisteo nella fronte; e (inficcossi la pietra nella sua fronte, e) cadde in terra sopra il viso suo.
And David prevailed against the Philistine with a sling and a stone. And he struck and killed the Philistine. But since David held no sword in his hand,50 E fue vincitore David contro al Filisteo con la rombola e con la pietra; e ferito il Filisteo, l'uccise. E non avendo David coltello in mano,
he ran and stood over the Philistine, and he took his sword, and withdrew it from the sheath. And he killed him and cut off his head. Then the Philistines, seeing that their strongest man was dead, fled away.51 corse, e istette (David) sopra il Filisteo; e tolse la spada sua, e trassela fuori della guaina; e ucciselo, e tagliogli il capo. E veggendo li Filistei, ch' era morto il fortissimo di loro, fuggironsi.
And the men of Israel and Judah, rising up, shouted and pursued after the Philistines, even until they arrived at the valley and as far as the gates of Ekron. And many wounded among the Philistines fell on the way of Shaaraim, and as far as Gath, and as far as Ekron.52 E levandosi gli uomini d' Israel e di Giuda, gridarono, e cacciarono i Filistei insino che vennero alla valle e insino alle porte di Accaron; e caddero feriti de' Filistei nella via di Saraim, e insino in Get, e insino in Accaron.
And the sons of Israel, returning after they had pursued the Philistines, invaded their camp.53 E tornando i figliuoli d' Israel, poi ch' ebbeno cacciati i Filistei, entrarono nel campo loro.
Then David, taking up the head of the Philistine, brought it to Jerusalem. Yet truly, he placed his armor in his own tent.54 E David, tolto il capo del Filisteo, portollo in Ierusalem; e le sue armi puose nel suo abitacolo.
Now at the time that Saul had seen David going out against the Philistines, he said to Abner, the leader of the military, “From what stock is this youth descended, Abner?” And Abner said, “As your soul lives, O king, I do not know.”55 E in quello tempo, che Saul vide David andare contro al Filisteo, disse ad Abner principe della milizia: di che progenie è disceso questo giovane? E disse Abner: viva l'anima tua, re, che io non lo so.
And the king said, “You shall inquire as to whose son this boy may be.”56 Disse Saul: addimanda tu, di cui egli è figliuolo questo giovane.
And when David had returned, after the Philistine had been struck down, Abner took him, and brought him before Saul, having the head of the Philistine in his hand.57 Ed essendo uscito David, morto il Filisteo, Abner il menò dinanzi a Saul, avendo in mano il capo del Filisteo.
And Saul said to him, “Young man, from what ancestry are you?” And David said, “I am the son of your servant Jesse of Bethlehem.”58 E Saul gli disse: di che progenie se' tu, giovane? E David disse: figliuolo del tuo servo Isai di Betleem.
