1 There was a certain man from Ramah of Zophim, on Mount Ephraim, and his name was Elkanah, the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite.	1 Il y avait un homme de Ramataïm, un Soufite de la montagne d’Éphraïm, qui s’appelait Elkana. Il était fils de Yéroham, fils d’Élihou, fils de Tohou, fils de Souf, de la tribu d’Éphraïm.
2 And he had two wives: the name of one was Hannah, and the name of the second was Peninnah. And Peninnah had sons. But Hannah did not have children.	2 Il avait deux femmes, l’une s’appelait Anne, l’autre Pénina. Pénina avait des enfants mais Anne n’en avait pas.
3 And this man went up from his city, on the established days, so that he might adore and sacrifice to the Lord of hosts at Shiloh. Now the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, priests of the Lord, were in that place.	3 Cet homme montait chaque année de sa ville pour adorer et pour offrir des sacrifices à Yahvé Sabaot, au sanctuaire de Silo; les deux fils d’Héli, Hofni et Pinhas, servaient comme prêtres de Yahvé en cet endroit.
4 Then the day arrived, and Elkanah immolated. And he gave portions to his wife Peninnah, and to all her sons and daughters.	4 Un jour Elkana offrait un sacrifice; il donna des portions à sa femme Pénina ainsi qu’à ses fils et à ses filles;
5 But to Hannah he gave one portion with sorrow. For he loved Hannah, but the Lord had closed her womb.	5 il servit une double portion à Anne car il aimait Anne, mais Yahvé l’avait rendue stérile.
6 And her rival afflicted her and vehemently distressed her, to a great extent, for she rebuked her that the Lord had closed her womb.	6 Sa rivale ne faisait qu’augmenter sa peine: elle l’humiliait parce que Yahvé l’avait rendue stérile.
7 And she did so every year, when the time returned for them to ascend to the temple of the Lord. And she provoked her in this way. And so, she wept and did not take food.	7 Chaque année c’était pareil quand elle montait à la maison de Yahvé: l’autre ravivait sa peine, Anne pleurait et ne mangeait plus.
8 Therefore, her husband Elkanah said to her: “Hannah, why are you weeping? And why do you not eat? And for what reason do you afflict your heart? Am I not better to you than ten sons?”	8 Elkana, son mari, lui dit: “Anne, pourquoi pleures-tu, pourquoi ne manges-tu pas, pourquoi es-tu si triste, est-ce que je ne vaux pas mieux pour toi que dix fils?”
9 And so, after she ate and drank at Shiloh, Hannah rose up. And Eli, the priest, was sitting on the seat before the door of the temple of the Lord.	9 Ce jour-là, après qu’on eut mangé et bu à Silo, Anne se leva alors que le prêtre Héli était assis sur son siège contre un des montants de la porte du sanctuaire de Yahvé.
10 And since Hannah was bitter in soul, she prayed to the Lord, weeping greatly.	10 Dans sa peine elle se tourna vers Yahvé et le pria sans cesser de pleurer;
11 And she made a vow, saying, “O Lord of hosts, if, in looking with favor, you will see the affliction of your servant and will remember me, and will not forget your handmaid, and if you will give to your servant a male child, then I will give him to the Lord all the days of his life, and no razor shall pass over his head.”	11 elle fit ce vœu: “Yahvé des armées, regarde avec bonté la peine de ta servante, souviens-toi de moi, n’oublie pas ta servante. Si tu donnes à ta servante un petit garçon, je le consacrerai à Yahvé pour le restant de ses jours et le rasoir ne passera pas sur sa tête.”
12 Then it happened that, while she multiplied prayers before the Lord, Eli observed her mouth.	12 Elle priait là longuement devant Yahvé et Héli la regardait.
13 For Hannah was speaking in her heart, and only her lips moved, and her voice was barely heard. Therefore, Eli considered her to be drunk,	13 Anne priait dans le fond de son cœur, elle remuait à peine les lèvres et l’on n’entendait pas sa voix.
14 and so he said to her: “How long will you be inebriated? You should take only a little wine, but instead you are drenched.”	14 Héli pensa donc qu’elle était ivre, il lui dit: “Combien de temps vas-tu rester dans cet état? Va cuver ton vin.”
15 Responding, Hannah said: “By no means, my lord. For I am an exceedingly unhappy woman, and I drank neither wine, nor anything that can inebriate. Instead, I have poured out my soul in the sight of the Lord.	15 Anne répondit: “Non, mon seigneur, je ne suis qu’une femme en peine; je n’ai bu ni vin, ni boisson alcoolisée, mais j’épanche mon cœur devant Yahvé.
16 You should not repute your handmaid as one of the daughters of Belial. For I have been speaking from the abundance of my sorrow and grief, even until now.”	16 Ne prends pas ta servante pour une femme de rien: si je me suis tellement attardée à prier, c’est parce que ma souffrance et mon chagrin sont grands.”
17 Then Eli said to her: “Go in peace. And may the God of Israel grant to you your petition, which you have begged of him.”	17 Héli reprit la parole et lui dit: “Va en paix, et que le Dieu d’Israël exauce la prière que tu lui as faite.”
18 And she said, “I wish that your handmaid may find grace in your eyes.” And the woman went on her way, and she ate, and her countenance was no longer changed for the worse.	18 Elle lui dit à son tour: “Que ta servante trouve grâce à tes yeux!” Elle se leva, mangea, mais son visage n’était plus le même.
19 And they rose up in the morning, and they worshipped before the Lord. And they returned and arrived at their own house at Ramah. Then Elkanah knew his wife Hannah. And the Lord remembered her.	19 De bon matin on se leva et, après s’être prosternés devant Yahvé, ils s’en retournèrent pour regagner leur maison à Rama.
20 And it happened that, in the course of days, Hannah conceived and bore a son. And she called his name Samuel, because she had requested him from the Lord.	20 Elkana eut des relations avec sa femme Anne et Yahvé se souvint d’elle. Lorsque le temps fut accompli, Anne enfanta un fils et lui donna le nom de Samuel, car, dit-elle: “Je l’ai demandé à Yahvé.”
21 Now her husband Elkanah ascended with his entire house, so that he might immolate to the Lord a solemn sacrifice, with his vow.	21 Elkana, son mari, monta avec toute sa maison pour offrir à Yahvé le sacrifice comme chaque année et s’acquitter de son vœu.
22 But Hannah did not go up. For she said to her husband, “I will not go, until the infant has been weaned, and until I may lead him, so that he may appear before the sight of the Lord, and may remain always there.”	22 Anne ne monta pas, mais elle dit à son mari: “Lorsque l’enfant sera sevré, je le conduirai devant Yahvé et il y restera pour toujours.”
23 And her husband Elkanah said to her: “Do what seems good to you, and stay until you wean him. And I pray that the Lord may fulfill his word.” Therefore, the woman remained at home, and she breastfed her son, until she withdrew him from milk.	23 Elkana lui répondit: “Fais comme il te semble bon. Reste ici jusqu’à ce que tu l’aies sevré, et que Yahvé fasse comme tu viens de dire.” La femme resta donc, elle allaita son fils jusqu’au jour où il fut sevré.
24 And after she had weaned him, she brought him with her, along with three calves, and three measures of flour, and a small bottle of wine, and she led him to the house of the Lord at Shiloh. But the boy was still a young child.	24 Après qu’elle l’eut sevré, elle le fit monter avec elle à la maison de Yahvé à Silo; elle menait un taureau de trois ans avec une mesure de farine et une outre de vin. L’enfant était encore tout jeune.
25 And they immolated a calf, and they presented the boy to Eli.	25 Ils sacrifièrent le taureau et ils amenèrent l’enfant à Héli.
26 And Hannah said: “I beg you, my lord, as your soul lives, my lord: I am that woman, who stood before you here, praying to the Lord.	26 Anne lui dit: “Pardon, mon seigneur! Aussi vrai que tu vis, mon seigneur, c’est moi la femme qui se tenait ici près de toi pour prier Yahvé.
27 I prayed for this child, and the Lord granted to me my petition, which I asked of him.	27 C’est pour cet enfant que j’ai prié et Yahvé m’a donné ce que je lui demandais.
28 Because of this, I have also lent him to the Lord, for all the days when he shall be lent to the Lord.” And they adored the Lord in that place. And Hannah prayed, and she said:	28 À mon tour je le cède à Yahvé pour le restant de ses jours: il sera donné à Yahvé.” C’est ainsi qu’il resta là au service de Yahvé.
