Paul, an Apostle of Jesus Christ by the authority of God our Savior and Christ Jesus our hope,1 Paul, apostle of Christ Jesus appointed by the command of God our Saviour and of Christ Jesus ourhope,
to Timothy, beloved son in the faith. Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and from Christ Jesus our Lord.2 to Timothy, true child of mine in the faith. Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and from ChristJesus our Lord.
Now I asked you to remain at Ephesus, while I went into Macedonia, so that you would speak strongly against certain ones who have been teaching a different way,3 When I was setting out for Macedonia I urged you to stay on in Ephesus to instruct certain people not tospread wrong teaching
against those who have been paying attention to fables and endless genealogies. These things present questions as if they were greater than the edification that is of God, which is in faith.4 or to give attention to myths and unending genealogies; these things only foster doubts instead offurthering God's plan which is founded on faith.
Now the goal of instruction is charity from a pure heart, and a good conscience, and an unfeigned faith.5 The final goal at which this instruction aims is love, issuing from a pure heart, a clear conscience and asincere faith.
Certain persons, wandering away from these things, have been turned aside to empty babbling,6 Some people have missed the way to these things and turned to empty speculation,
desiring to be teachers of the law, but understanding neither the things that they themselves are saying, nor what they are affirming about these things.7 trying to be teachers of the Law; but they understand neither the words they use nor the matters aboutwhich they make such strong assertions.
But we know that the law is good, if one makes use of it properly.8 We are wel aware that the Law is good, but only provided it is used legitimately,
Knowing this, that the law was not set in place for the just, but for the unjust and the insubordinate, for the impious and sinners, for the wicked and the defiled, for those who commit patricide, matricide, or homicide,9 on the understanding that laws are not framed for people who are upright. On the contrary, they are forcriminals and the insubordinate, for the irreligious and the wicked, for the sacrilegious and the godless; they arefor people who kil their fathers or mothers and for murderers,
for fornicators, for males who sleep with males, for kidnappers, for liars, for perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound doctrine,10 for the promiscuous, homosexuals, kidnappers, for liars and for perjurers -- and for everything else thatis contrary to the sound teaching
which is in accord with the Gospel of the glory of the blessed God, the Gospel which has been entrusted to me.11 that accords with the gospel of the glory of the blessed God, the gospel that was entrusted to me.
I give thanks to him who has strengthened me, Christ Jesus our Lord, because he has considered me faithful, placing me in the ministry,12 I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength. By cal ing me into his service he has judgedme trustworthy,
though previously I was a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and contemptuous. But then I obtained the mercy of God. For I had been acting ignorantly, in unbelief.13 even though I used to be a blasphemer and a persecutor and contemptuous. Mercy, however, wasshown me, because while I lacked faith I acted in ignorance;
And so the grace of our Lord has abounded greatly, with the faith and love that is in Christ Jesus.14 but the grace of our Lord filled me with faith and with the love that is in Christ Jesus.
It is a faithful saying, and worthy of acceptance by everyone, that Christ Jesus came into this world to bring salvation to sinners, among whom I am first.15 Here is a saying that you can rely on and nobody should doubt: that Christ Jesus came into the worldto save sinners. I myself am the greatest of them;
But it was for this reason that I obtained mercy, so that in me as first, Christ Jesus would display all patience, for the instruction of those who would believe in him unto eternal life.16 and if mercy has been shown to me, it is because Jesus Christ meant to make me the leading exampleof his inexhaustible patience for al the other people who were later to trust in him for eternal life.
So then, to the King of ages, to the immortal, invisible, solitary God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.17 To the eternal King, the undying, invisible and only God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.
This precept I commend to you, my son Timothy, in accord with the prophets who preceded you: that you serve among them like a soldier in a good war,18 Timothy, my son, these are the instructions that I am giving you, in accordance with the words oncespoken over you by the prophets, so that in their light you may fight like a good soldier
holding to faith and good conscience, against those who, by rejecting these things, have made a shipwreck of the faith.19 with faith and a good conscience for your weapons. Some people have put conscience aside andwrecked their faith in consequence.
Among these are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan, so that they may learn not to blaspheme.20 I mean men like Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan so that they may learnnot to be blasphemous.
