Joshua 5

1 Therefore, after all the kings of the Amorites, who were living across the Jordan toward the western region, and all the kings of Canaan, who possessed the places beside the great sea, had heard that the Lord had dried up the waters of the Jordan before the sons of Israel, until they crossed over it, their heart was broken, and there remained in them no spirit, out of fear at the entrance of the sons of Israel.	1 Quando tutti i re degli Amorrei, a occidente del Giordano, e tutti i re dei Cananei, lungo il mare, vennero a sapere che il Signore aveva prosciugato le acque del Giordano davanti agli Israeliti, al loro passaggio, si sentirono venir meno il cuore e rimasero senza coraggio davanti agli Israeliti.
2 So at that time, the Lord said to Joshua: “Make for yourself knives of stone, and circumcise the sons of Israel a second time.”	2 In quel tempo il Signore disse a Giosuè: «Fatti coltelli di selce e fa’ una nuova circoncisione agli Israeliti».
3 He did what the Lord had commanded, and he circumcised the sons of Israel at the hill of the foreskins.	3 Giosuè si fece coltelli di selce e circoncise gli Israeliti al colle dei Prepuzi.
4 Now this is the reason for the second circumcision: All the people who departed from Egypt of the male gender, all the men fit for war, died in the desert during the very long wandering way;	4 La ragione di questa circoncisione praticata da Giosuè è la seguente: tutto il popolo uscito dall’Egitto, i maschi, tutti gli uomini atti alla guerra, erano morti nel deserto dopo l’uscita dall’Egitto.
5 all these had been circumcised. But the people who were born in the desert,	5 Tutti coloro che erano usciti erano circoncisi, mentre tutti coloro che erano nati nel deserto, dopo l’uscita dall’Egitto, non erano circoncisi.
6 throughout the forty years of the journey in the very broad wilderness, were uncircumcised, until the ones who had not listened to the voice of the Lord were consumed. For he had sworn to them before, that he would not reveal to them the land flowing with milk and honey.	6 Quarant’anni infatti avevano camminato gli Israeliti nel deserto, finché non fu estinta tutta la generazione degli uomini idonei alla guerra, usciti dall’Egitto; essi non avevano ascoltato la voce del Signore e il Signore aveva giurato di non far loro vedere quella terra che il Signore aveva giurato ai loro padri di darci, terra dove scorrono latte e miele.
7 The sons of these ones succeeded to the place of their fathers, and they were circumcised by Joshua. For they were uncircumcised, just as they had been born, and no one had circumcised them along the way.	7 Al loro posto suscitò i loro figli e Giosuè circoncise costoro; non erano infatti circoncisi, perché non era stata fatta la circoncisione durante il viaggio.
8 Then, after they were all circumcised, they remained in the same place of the camp until they were healed.	8 Quando si terminò di circoncidere tutti, rimasero a riposo nell’accampamento fino al loro ristabilimento.
9 And the Lord said to Joshua, “Today I have taken away from you the disgrace of Egypt.” And the name of that place was called Gilgal, even to the present day.	9 Allora il Signore disse a Giosuè: «Oggi ho allontanato da voi l’infamia dell’Egitto». Quel luogo si chiama Gàlgala fino ad oggi.
10 And the sons of Israel stayed at Gilgal, and they kept the Passover, on the fourteenth day of the month at evening, in the plains of Jericho.	10 Gli Israeliti rimasero accampati a Gàlgala e celebrarono la Pasqua al quattordici del mese, alla sera, nelle steppe di Gerico.
11 And on the following day, they ate unleavened bread from the grain of the land, and cooked grain, of the same year.	11 Il giorno dopo la Pasqua mangiarono i prodotti della terra, azzimi e frumento abbrustolito in quello stesso giorno.
12 And the manna ceased after they ate from the grain of the land. And the sons of Israel no longer made use of that food. Instead, they ate from the grain of the present year, from the land of Canaan.	12 E a partire dal giorno seguente, come ebbero mangiato i prodotti della terra, la manna cessò. Gli Israeliti non ebbero più manna; quell’anno mangiarono i frutti della terra di Canaan.
13 And when Joshua was in the field of the city of Jericho, he lifted up his eyes, and he saw a man standing opposite him, holding a drawn sword. And he went to him and said, “Are you one of ours, or one of our adversaries?”	13 Quando fu presso Gerico, Giosuè alzò gli occhi e vide un uomo in piedi davanti a sé, che aveva in mano una spada sguainata. Giosuè si diresse verso di lui e gli chiese: «Tu sei dei nostri o dei nostri nemici?».
14 And he responded: “Not at all. Instead, I am a prince of the host of the Lord, and now I have arrived.”	14 Rispose: «No, io sono il capo dell’esercito del Signore. Giungo proprio ora». Allora Giosuè cadde con la faccia a terra, si prostrò e gli disse: «Che ha da dire il mio signore al suo servo?».
15 Joshua fell prone on the ground. And reverencing, he said, “What does my lord say to his servant?”	15 Rispose il capo dell’esercito del Signore a Giosuè: «Togliti i sandali dai tuoi piedi, perché il luogo sul quale tu stai è santo». Giosuè così fece.
16 He said: “Remove your shoes from your feet. For the place on which you stand is holy.” And Joshua did just as he had been commanded.
