Acts of the Apostles 24

1 Then, after five days, the high priest Ananias came down with some of the elders and a certain Tertullus, a speaker. And they went to the governor against Paul.	1 Cinq jours plus tard, le grand prêtre Ananie descendit avec quelques anciens et un avocat, un certainTertullus, et, devant le gouverneur, ils se constituèrent accusateurs de Paul.
2 And having summoned Paul, Tertullus began to accuse him, saying: “Most excellent Felix, since we have much peace through you, and many things may be corrected by your providence,	2 Celui-ci fut appelé, et Tertullus entama l'accusation en ces termes: "La paix profonde dont nousjouissons grâce à toi et les réformes dont cette nation est redevable à ta providence,
3 we acknowledge this, always and everywhere, with acts of thanksgiving for everything.	3 en tout et partout nous les accueillons, très excellent Félix, avec toutes sortes d'actions de grâces.
4 But lest I speak at too great a length, I beg you, by your clemency, to listen to us briefly.	4 Mais pour ne pas t'importuner davantage, je te prie de nous écouter un instant avec la bienveillancequi te caractérise.
5 We have found this man to be pestilent, to be inciting seditions among all the Jews in the entire world, and to be the author of the sedition of the sect of the Nazarenes.	5 Cet homme, nous l'avons constaté, est une peste: il suscite des désordres chez tous les Juifs dumonde entier, et c'est un meneur du parti des Nazôréens.
6 And he has even been attempting to violate the temple. And having apprehended him, we wanted him to be judged according to our law.	6 Il a même tenté de profaner le Temple, et nous l'avons alors arrêté.
7 But Lysias, the tribune, overwhelming us with great violence, snatched him away from our hands,
8 ordering his accusers to come to you. From them, you yourself will be able, by judging about all these things, to understand the reason that we accuse him.”	8 C'est par lui que tu pourras toi-même, en l'interrogeant, t'assurer du bien-fondé de toutes nosaccusations contre lui."
9 And then the Jews interjected, saying that these things were so.	9 Les Juifs l'appuyèrent, assurant qu'il en était bien ainsi.
10 Then, since the governor had motioned for him to speak, Paul responded: “Knowing that you have been the judge over this nation for many years, I will give an explanation of myself with an honest soul.	10 Alors, le gouverneur lui ayant fait signe de parler, Paul répondit: "Voilà, je le sais, de nombreusesannées que tu as cette nation sous ta juridiction; aussi est-ce avec confiance que je plaiderai ma cause.
11 For, as you may realize, it has only been twelve days since I went up to worship in Jerusalem.	11 Tu peux t'en assurer: il n'y a pas plus de douze jours que je suis monté en pèlerinage à Jérusalem,
12 And they did not find me in the temple arguing with anyone, nor causing a rally of the people: neither in the synagogues, nor in the city.	12 et, ni dans le Temple, ni dans les synagogues, ni par la ville, on ne m'a trouvé en discussion avecquelqu'un ou en train d'ameuter la foule.
13 And they are not able to prove to you the things about which they now accuse me.	13 Ils ne peuvent pas davantage te prouver ce dont ils m'accusent maintenant.
14 But I confess this to you, that according to that sect, which they call a heresy, so do I serve my God and Father, believing all that is written in the Law and the Prophets,	14 "Je t'avoue pourtant ceci: c'est suivant la Voie, qualifiée par eux de parti, que je sers le Dieu de mespères, gardant ma foi à tout ce qu'il y a dans la Loi et à ce qui est écrit dans les Prophètes,
15 having a hope in God, which these others themselves also expect, that there will be a future resurrection of the just and the unjust.	15 ayant en Dieu l'espérance, comme ceux-ci l'ont eux-mêmes, qu'il y aura une résurrection des justeset des pécheurs.
16 And in this, I myself always strive to have a conscience that is lacking in any offence toward God and toward men.	16 C'est pourquoi, moi aussi, je m'applique à avoir sans cesse une conscience irréprochable devantDieu et devant les hommes.
17 Then, after many years, I went to my nation, bringing alms and offerings and vows,	17 "Au bout de bien des années, je suis venu apporter des aumônes à ma nation et présenter desoffrandes:
18 through which I obtained purification in the temple: neither with a crowd, nor with a commotion.	18 c'est ainsi qu'ils m'ont trouvé dans le Temple; je m'étais purifié et ne provoquais ni attroupement nitumulte.
19 But certain Jews out of Asia are the ones who should have appeared before you to accuse me, if they have anything against me.	19 Mais quelques Juifs d'Asie... c'est eux qui auraient dû se présenter devant toi et m'accuser, s'ilsavaient quelque chose contre moi!
20 Or let these ones here say if they have found in me any iniquity, while standing before the council.	20 Que ceux-ci du moins disent, eux, de quel délit ils m'ont trouvé coupable lorsque j'ai comparudevant le Sanhédrin!
21 For while standing among them, I spoke out solely about this one matter: about the resurrection of the dead. It is about this that I am being judged today by you.”	21 A moins qu'il ne s'agisse de cette seule parole que j'ai criée, debout au milieu d'eux: C'est à cause dela résurrection des morts que je suis mis aujourd'hui en jugement devant vous."
22 Then Felix, after having ascertained much knowledge about this Way, kept them waiting, by saying, “When Lysias the tribune has arrived, I will give you a hearing.”	22 Félix, qui était fort exactement informé de ce qui concerne la Voie, les ajourna en disant: "Dès quele tribun Lysias sera descendu, je statuerai sur votre affaire."
23 And he ordered a centurion to guard him, and to take rest, and not to prohibit any of his own from ministering to him.	23 Il prescrivit au centurion de garder Paul prisonnier, mais de lui laisser quelques facilités et den'empêcher aucun des siens de lui rendre service.
24 Then, after some days, Felix, arriving with his wife Drusilla who was a Jew, called for Paul and listened to him about the faith that is in Christ Jesus.	24 Quelques jours plus tard, Félix vint avec sa femme Drusille, qui était juive. Il envoya chercher Paulet l'écouta parler de la foi au Christ Jésus.
25 And after he discoursed about justice and chastity, and about the future judgment, Felix was trembling, and he responded: “For now, go, but remain under guard. Then, at an opportune time, I will summon you.”	25 Mais comme il se mettait à discourir sur la justice, la continence, le jugement à venir, Félix pritpeur et répondit: "Pour le moment, tu peux aller. Je te rappellerai à la première occasion."
26 He was also hoping that money might be given to him by Paul, and because of this, he frequently summoned him and spoke with him.	26 Il espérait par ailleurs que Paul lui donnerait de l'argent; aussi l'envoyait-il assez souvent chercherpour converser avec lui.
27 Then, when two years had passed, Felix was succeeded by Portius Festus. And since Felix wanted to show particular favor to the Jews, he left Paul behind as a prisoner.	27 Après deux années révolues, Félix reçut pour successeur Porcius Festus. Voulant faire plaisir auxJuifs, Félix laissa Paul en captivité.
