And so, when Jesus realized that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made more disciples and baptized more than John,1 Quand Jésus apprit que les Pharisiens avaient entendu dire qu'il faisait plus de disciples et en baptisaitplus que Jean --
(though Jesus himself was not baptizing, but only his disciples)2 bien qu'à vrai dire Jésus lui-même ne baptisât pas, mais ses disciples --,
he left behind Judea, and he traveled again to Galilee.3 il quitta la Judée et s'en retourna en Galilée.
Now he needed to cross through Samaria.4 Or il lui fallait traverser la Samarie.
Therefore, he went into a city of Samaria which is called Sychar, near the estate which Jacob gave to his son Joseph.5 Il arrive donc à une ville de Samarie appelée Sychar, près de la terre que Jacob avait donnée à son filsJoseph.
And Jacob’s well was there. And so Jesus, being tired from the journey, was sitting in a certain way on the well. It was about the sixth hour.6 Là se trouvait le puits de Jacob. Jésus, fatigué par la marche, se tenait donc assis près du puits. C'étaitenviron la sixième heure.
A woman of Samaria arrived to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give me to drink.”7 Une femme de Samarie vient pour puiser de l'eau. Jésus lui dit: "Donne-moi à boire."
For his disciples had gone into the city in order to buy food.8 Ses disciples en effet s'en étaient allés à la ville pour acheter de quoi manger.
And so, that Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that you, being a Jew, are requesting a drink from me, though I am a Samaritan woman?” For the Jews do not associate with the Samaritans.9 La femme samaritaine lui dit: "Comment! toi qui es Juif, tu me demandes à boire à moi qui suis unefemme samaritaine?" (Les Juifs en effet n'ont pas de relations avec les Samaritains.)
Jesus responded and said to her: “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who is saying to you, ‘Give me to drink,’ perhaps you would have made a request of him, and he would have given you living water.”10 Jésus lui répondit: "Si tu savais le don de Dieu et qui est celui qui te dit: Donne-moi à boire, c'est toiqui l'aurais prié et il t'aurait donné de l'eau vive."
The woman said to him: “Lord, you do not have anything with which to draw water, and the well is deep. From where, then, do you have living water?11 Elle lui dit: "Seigneur, tu n'as rien pour puiser, et le puits est profond. D'où l'as-tu donc, l'eau vive?
Surely, you are not greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and who drank from it, with his sons and his cattle?”12 Serais-tu plus grand que notre père Jacob, qui nous a donné ce puits et y a bu lui-même, ainsi que sesfils et ses bêtes?"
Jesus responded and said to her: “All who drink from this water will thirst again. But whoever shall drink from the water that I will give to him will not thirst for eternity.13 Jésus lui répondit: "Quiconque boit de cette eau aura soif à nouveau;
Instead, the water that I will give to him will become in him a fountain of water, springing up into eternal life.”14 mais qui boira de l'eau que je lui donnerai n'aura plus jamais soif; l'eau que je lui donnerai deviendraen lui source d'eau jaillissant en vie éternelle."
The woman said to him, “Lord, give me this water, so that I may not thirst and may not come here to draw water.”15 La femme lui dit: "Seigneur, donne-moi cette eau, afin que je n'aie plus soif et ne vienne plus ici pourpuiser."
Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and return here.”16 Il lui dit: "Va, appelle ton mari et reviens ici."
The woman responded and said, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her: “You have spoken well, in saying, ‘I have no husband.’17 La femme lui répondit: "Je n'ai pas de mari." Jésus lui dit: "Tu as bien fait de dire: Je n'ai pas de mari,
For you have had five husbands, but he whom you have now is not your husband. You have spoken this in truth.”18 car tu as eu cinq maris et celui que tu as maintenant n'est pas ton mari; en cela tu dis vrai."
The woman said to him: “Lord, I see that you are a Prophet.19 La femme lui dit: "Seigneur, je vois que tu es un prophète...
Our fathers worshipped on this mountain, but you say that Jerusalem is the place where one ought to worship.”20 Nos pères ont adoré sur cette montagne et vous, vous dites: C'est à Jérusalem qu'est le lieu où il fautadorer."
Jesus said to her: “Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when you shall worship the Father, neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem.21 Jésus lui dit: "Crois-moi, femme, l'heure vient où ce n'est ni sur cette montagne ni à Jérusalem quevous adorerez le Père.
You worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know. For salvation is from the Jews.22 Vous, vous adorez ce que vous ne connaissez pas; nous, nous adorons ce que nous connaissons, car lesalut vient des Juifs.
But the hour is coming, and it is now, when true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth. For the Father also seeks such persons who may worship him.23 Mais l'heure vient - et c'est maintenant - où les véritables adorateurs adoreront le Père dans l'esprit etla vérité, car tels sont les adorateurs que cherche le Père.
God is Spirit. And so, those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.”24 Dieu est esprit, et ceux qui adorent, c'est dans l'esprit et la vérité qu'ils doivent adorer."
The woman said to him: “I know that the Messiah is coming (who is called the Christ). And then, when he will have arrived, he will announce everything to us.”25 La femme lui dit: "Je sais que le Messie doit venir, celui qu'on appelle Christ. Quand il viendra, ilnous expliquera tout."
Jesus said to her: “I am he, the one who is speaking with you.”26 Jésus lui dit: "Je le suis, moi qui te parle."
And then his disciples arrived. And they wondered that he was speaking with the woman. Yet no one said: “What are you seeking?” or, “Why are you talking with her?”27 Là-dessus arrivèrent ses disciples, et ils s'étonnaient qu'il parlât à une femme. Pourtant pas un ne dit:"Que cherches-tu?" Ou: "De quoi lui parles-tu?"
And so the woman left behind her water jar and went into the city. And she said to the men there:28 La femme alors laissa là sa cruche, courut à la ville et dit aux gens:
“Come and see a man who has told me all the things that I have done. Is he not the Christ?”29 "Venez voir un homme qui m'a dit tout ce que j'ai fait. Ne serait-il pas le Christ?"
Therefore, they went out of the city and came to him.30 Ils sortirent de la ville et ils se dirigeaient vers lui.
Meanwhile, the disciples petitioned him, saying, “Rabbi, eat.”31 Entre-temps, les disciples le priaient, en disant: "Rabbi, mange."
But he said to them, “I have food to eat which you do not know.”32 Mais il leur dit: "J'ai à manger un aliment que vous ne connaissez pas."
Therefore, the disciples said to one another, “Could someone have brought him something to eat?”33 Les disciples se disaient entre eux: "Quelqu'un lui aurait-il apporté à manger?" Jésus leur dit:
Jesus said to them: “My food is to do the will of the One who sent me, so that I may perfect his work.34 "Ma nourriture est de faire la volonté de celui qui m'a envoyé et de mener son oeuvre à bonne fin.
Do you not say, ‘There are still four months, and then the harvest arrives?’ Behold, I say to you: Lift up your eyes and look at the countryside; for it is already ripe for the harvest.35 Ne dites-vous pas: Encore quatre mois et vient la moisson? Eh bien! je vous dis: Levez les yeux etregardez les champs, ils sont blancs pour la moisson. Déjà
For he who reaps, receives wages and gathers fruit unto eternal life, so that both he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together.36 le moissonneur reçoit son salaire et récolte du fruit pour la vie éternelle, en sorte que le semeur seréjouit avec le moissonneur.
For in this the word is true: that it is one who sows, and it is another who reaps.37 Car ici se vérifie le dicton: autre est le semeur, autre le moissonneur:
I have sent you to reap that for which you did not labor. Others have labored, and you have entered into their labors.”38 je vous ai envoyés moissonner là où vous ne vous êtes pas fatigués; d'autres se sont fatigués et vous, vous héritez de leurs fatigues."
Now many of the Samaritans from that city believed in him, because of the word of the woman who was offering testimony: “For he told me all the things that I have done.”39 Un bon nombre de Samaritains de cette ville crurent en lui à cause de la parole de la femme, quiattestait: "Il m'a dit tout ce que j'ai fait."
Therefore, when the Samaritans had come to him, they petitioned him to lodge there. And he lodged there for two days.40 Quand donc ils furent arrivés près de lui, les Samaritains le prièrent de demeurer chez eux. Il ydemeura deux jours
And many more believed in him, because of his own word.41 et ils furent bien plus nombreux à croire, à cause de sa parole,
And they said to the woman: “Now we believe, not because of your speech, but because we ourselves have heard him, and so we know that he is truly the Savior of the world.”42 et ils disaient à la femme: "Ce n'est plus sur tes dires que nous croyons; nous l'avons nous-mêmesentendu et nous savons que c'est vraiment lui le sauveur du monde."
Then, after two days, he departed from there, and he traveled into Galilee.43 Après ces deux jours, il partit de là pour la Galilée.
For Jesus himself offered testimony that a Prophet has no honor in his own country.44 Jésus avait en effet témoigné lui-même qu'un prophète n'est pas honoré dans sa propre patrie.
And so, when he had arrived in Galilee, the Galileans received him, because they had seen all that he had done at Jerusalem, in the day of the feast. For they also went to the feast day.45 Quand donc il vint en Galilée, les Galiléens l'accueillirent, ayant vu tout ce qu'il avait fait à Jérusalemlors de la fête; car eux aussi étaient venus à la fête.
Then he went again into Cana of Galilee, where he made water into wine. And there was a certain ruler, whose son was sick at Capernaum.46 Il retourna alors à Cana de Galilée, où il avait changé l'eau en vin. Et il y avait un fonctionnaire royal, dont le fils était malade à Capharnaüm.
Since he had heard that Jesus came to Galilee from Judea, he sent to him and begged him to come down and heal his son. For he was beginning to die.47 Apprenant que Jésus était arrivé de Judée en Galilée, il s'en vint le trouver et il le priait de descendreguérir son fils, car il allait mourir.
Therefore, Jesus said to him, “Unless you have seen signs and wonders, you do not believe.”48 Jésus lui dit: "Si vous ne voyez des signes et des prodiges, vous ne croirez pas!"
The ruler said to him, “Lord, come down before my son dies.”49 Le fonctionnaire royal lui dit: "Seigneur, descends avant que ne meure mon petit enfant."
Jesus said to him, “Go, your son lives.” The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him, and so he went away.50 Jésus lui dit: "Va, ton fils vit." L'homme crut à la parole que Jésus lui avait dite et il se mit en route.
Then, as he was going down, his servants met him. And they reported to him, saying that his son was alive.51 Déjà il descendait, quand ses serviteurs, venant à sa rencontre, lui dirent que son enfant était vivant.
Therefore, he asked them at which hour he had become better. And they said to him, “Yesterday, at the seventh hour, the fever left him.”52 Il s'informa auprès d'eux de l'heure à laquelle il s'était trouvé mieux. Ils lui dirent: "C'est hier, à laseptième heure, que la fièvre l'a quitté."
Then the father realized that it was at the same hour that Jesus said to him, “Your son lives.” And both he and his entire household believed.53 Le père reconnut que c'était l'heure où Jésus lui avait dit: "Ton fils vit", et il crut, lui avec sa maisontout entière.
This next sign was the second that Jesus accomplished, after he had arrived in Galilee from Judea.54 Ce nouveau signe, le second, Jésus le fit à son retour de Judée en Galilée.
