Therefore, Pilate then took Jesus into custody and scourged him.1 Allora adunque Pilato prese Gesù, e lo flagellò.
And the soldiers, plaiting a crown of thorns, imposed it on his head. And they put a purple garment around him.2 Ed i soldati, contesta una corona di spine, gliela posero in sul capo, e gli misero attorno un ammanto di porpora, e dicevano:
And they were approaching him and saying, “Hail, king of the Jews!” And they struck him repeatedly.3 Ben ti sia, o Re de’ Giudei; e gli davan delle bacchettate.
Then Pilate went outside again, and he said to them: “Behold, I am bringing him out to you, so that you may realize that I find no case against him.”4 E Pilato uscì di nuovo, e disse loro: Ecco, io ve lo meno fuori, acciocchè sappiate ch’io non trovo in lui alcun maleficio.
(Then Jesus went out, bearing the crown of thorns and the purple garment.) And he said to them, “Behold the man.”5 Gesù adunque uscì, portando la corona di spine, e l’ammanto di porpora. E Pilato disse loro: Ecco l’uomo.
Therefore, when the high priests and the attendants had seen him, they cried out, saying: “Crucify him! Crucify him!” Pilate said to them: “Take him yourselves and crucify him. For I find no case against him.”6 Ed i principali sacerdoti, ed i sergenti, quando lo videro, gridarono, dicendo: Crocifiggilo, crocifiggilo. Pilato disse loro: Prendetelo voi, e crocifiggetelo, perciocchè io non trovo alcun maleficio in lui.
The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and according to the law, he ought to die, for he has made himself the Son of God.”7 I Giudei gli risposero: Noi abbiamo una legge; e secondo la nostra legge, egli deve morire; perciocchè egli si è fatto Figliuol di Dio.
Therefore, when Pilate had heard this word, he was more fearful.8 Pilato adunque, quando ebbe udite quelle parole, temette maggiormente.
And he entered into the praetorium again. And he said to Jesus. “Where are you from?” But Jesus gave him no response.9 E rientrò nel palazzo, e disse a Gesù: Onde sei tu? Ma Gesù non gli diede alcuna risposta.
Therefore, Pilate said to him: “Will you not speak to me? Do you not know that I have authority to crucify you, and I have authority to release you?”10 Laonde Pilato gli disse: Non mi parli tu? non sai tu ch’io ho podestà di crocifiggerti, e podestà di liberarti?
Jesus responded, “You would not have any authority over me, unless it were given to you from above. For this reason, he who has handed me over to you has the greater sin.”11 Gesù rispose: Tu non avresti alcuna podestà contro a me, se ciò non ti fosse dato da alto; perciò, colui che mi t’ha dato nelle mani ha maggior peccato.
And from then on, Pilate was seeking to release him. But the Jews were crying out, saying: “If you release this man, you are no friend of Caesar. For anyone who makes himself a king contradicts Caesar.”12 Da quell’ora Pilato cercava di liberarlo; ma i Giudei gridavano, dicendo: Se tu liberi costui, tu non sei amico di Cesare: chiunque si fa re si oppone a Cesare.
Now when Pilate had heard these words, he brought Jesus outside, and he sat down in the seat of judgment, in a place which is called the Pavement, but in Hebrew, it is called the Elevation.13 Pilato adunque, avendo udite queste parole, menò fuori Gesù, e si pose a sedere in sul tribunale, nel luogo detto Lastrico, ed in Ebreo Gabbata
Now it was the preparation day of the Passover, about the sixth hour. And he said to the Jews, “Behold your king.”14 or era la preparazione della pasqua, ed era intorno all’ora sesta; e disse a’ Giudei: Ecco il vostro Re.
But they were crying out: “Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your king?” The high priests responded, “We have no king except Caesar.”15 Ma essi gridarono: Togli, togli, crocifiggilo. Pilato disse loro: Crocifiggerò io il vostro Re? I principali sacerdoti risposero: Noi non abbiamo altro re che Cesare
Therefore, he then handed him over to them to be crucified. And they took Jesus and led him away.16 Allora adunque egli lo diede lor nelle mani, acciocchè fosse crocifisso. Ed essi presero Gesù, e lo menarono via.
And carrying his own cross, he went forth to the place which is called Calvary, but in Hebrew it is called the Place of the Skull.17 ED egli, portando la sua croce, uscì al luogo detto del Teschio, il quale in Ebreo si chiama Golgota.
There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on each side, with Jesus in the middle.18 E quivi lo crocifissero, e con lui due altri, l’uno di qua, e l’altro di là, e Gesù in mezzo
Then Pilate also wrote a title, and he set it above the cross. And it was written: JESUS THE NAZARENE, KING OF THE JEWS.19 Or Pilato scrisse ancora un titolo, e lo pose sopra la croce; e v’era scritto: GESÙ IL NAZAREO, IL RE DE’ GIUDEI.
Therefore, many of the Jews read this title, for the place where Jesus was crucified was close to the city. And it was written in Hebrew, in Greek, and in Latin.20 Molti adunque de’ Giudei lessero questo titolo, perciocchè il luogo ove Gesù fu crocifisso era vicin della città; e quello era scritto in Ebreo, in Greco, e in Latino.
Then the high priests of the Jews said to Pilate: Do not write, ‘King of the Jews,’ but that he said, ‘I am King of the Jews.’21 Laonde i principali sacerdoti de’ Giudei dissero a Pilato: Non iscrivere: Il Re de’ Giudei; ma che costui ha detto: Io sono il Re de’ Giudei.
Pilate responded, “What I have written, I have written.”22 Pilato rispose: Io ho scritto ciò ch’io ho scritto.
Then the soldiers, when they had crucified him, took his garments, and they made four parts, one part to each soldier, and the tunic. But the tunic was seamless, woven from above throughout the whole.23 Or i soldati, quando ebber crocifisso Gesù, presero i suoi panni, e ne fecero quattro parti, una parte per ciascun soldato, e la tonica.
Then they said to one another, “Let us not cut it, but instead let us cast lots over it, to see whose it will be.” This was so that the Scripture would be fulfilled, saying: “They have distributed my garments among themselves, and for my vesture they have cast lots.” And indeed, the soldiers did these things.24 Or la tonica era senza cucitura, tessuta tutta al di lungo fin da capo; laonde dissero gli uni agli altri: Non la stracciamo, ma tiriamone le sorti, a cui ella ha da essere, acciocchè si adempiesse la scrittura, che dice: Hanno spartiti fra loro i miei panni, ed hanno tratta la sorte sopra la mia vesta. I soldati adunque fecero queste cose.
And standing beside the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother’s sister, and Mary of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.25 Or presso della croce di Gesù stava sua madre, e la sorella di sua madre, Maria di Cleopa, e Maria Maddalena.
Therefore, when Jesus had seen his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing near, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold your son.”26 Laonde Gesù, veggendo quivi presente sua madre, e il discepolo ch’egli amava, disse a sua madre: Donna, ecco il tuo figliuolo!
Next, he said to the disciple, “Behold your mother.” And from that hour, the disciple accepted her as his own.27 Poi disse al discepolo: Ecco tua madre! E da quell’ora quel discepolo l’accolse in casa sua.
After this, Jesus knew that all had been accomplished, so in order that the Scripture might be completed, he said, “I thirst.”28 Poi appresso, Gesù, sapendo che ogni cosa era già compiuta, acciocchè la scrittura si adempiesse, disse: Io ho sete.
And there was a container placed there, full of vinegar. Then, placing a sponge full of vinegar around hyssop, they brought it to his mouth.29 Or quivi era posto un vaso pien d’aceto. Coloro adunque, empiuta di quell’aceto una spugna, e postala intorno a dell’isopo, gliela porsero alla bocca.
Then Jesus, when he had received the vinegar, said: “It is consummated.” And bowing down his head, he surrendered his spirit.30 Quando adunque Gesù ebbe preso l’aceto, disse: Ogni cosa è compiuta. E chinato il capo, rendè lo spirito
Then the Jews, because it was the preparation day, so that the bodies would not remain upon the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a great day), they petitioned Pilate in order that their legs might be broken, and they might be taken away.31 Or i Giudei pregarono Pilato che si fiaccasser loro le gambe, e che si togliesser via; acciocchè i corpi non restassero in su la croce nel sabato, perciocchè era la preparazione; e quel giorno del sabato era un gran giorno.
Therefore, the soldiers approached, and, indeed, they broke the legs of the first one, and of the other who was crucified with him.32 I soldati adunque vennero, e fiaccarono le gambe al primo, e poi anche all’altro, ch’era stato crocifisso con lui.
But after they had approached Jesus, when they saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs.33 Ma essendo venuti a Gesù, come videro che egli già era morto, non gli fiaccarono le gambe.
Instead, one of the soldiers opened his side with a lance, and immediately there went out blood and water.34 Ma uno de’ soldati gli forò il costato con una lancia, e subito ne uscì sangue ed acqua.
And he who saw this has offered testimony, and his testimony is true. And he knows that he speaks the truth, so that you also may believe.35 E colui che l’ha veduto ne rendè testimonianza, e la sua testimonianza è verace; ed esso sa che egli dice cose vere, acciocchè voi crediate.
For these things happened so that the Scripture would be fulfilled: “You shall not break a bone of him.”36 Perciocchè queste cose sono avvenute, acciocchè la scrittura fosse adempiuta: Niun osso d’esso sarà fiaccato.
And again, another Scripture says: “They shall look upon him, whom they have pierced.”37 Ed ancora un’altra scrittura dice: Essi vedranno colui che han trafitto
Then, after these things, Joseph from Arimathea, (because he was a disciple of Jesus, but a secret one for fear of the Jews) petitioned Pilate so that he might take away the body of Jesus. And Pilate gave permission.
Now Nicodemus also arrived, (who had gone to Jesus at first by night) bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloe, weighing about seventy pounds.39 Or venne anche Nicodemo, che al principio era venuto a Gesù di notte, portando intorno a cento libbre d’una composizione di mirra, e d’aloe.
Therefore, they took the body of Jesus, and they bound it with linen cloths and the aromatic spices, just as it is the manner of the Jews to bury.40 Essi adunque presero il corpo di Gesù, e l’involsero in lenzuoli, con quegli aromati; secondo ch’è l’usanza de’ Giudei d’imbalsamare.
Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden there was a new tomb, in which no one had yet been laid.41 Or nel luogo, ove egli fu crocifisso, era un orto, e nell’orto un monumento nuovo, ove niuno era stato ancora posto.
Therefore, because of the preparation day of the Jews, since the tomb was nearby, they placed Jesus there.42 Quivi adunque posero Gesù, per cagion della preparazion de’ Giudei, perciocchè il monumento era vicino
