Deuteronomy 5

1 And Moses summoned all of Israel, and he said to them: “Listen, O Israel, to the ceremonies and judgments, which I am speaking to your ears on this day. Learn them, and fulfill them in deed.	1 Moïse convoqua tout Israël et leur dit: Ecoute, Israël, les lois et les coutumes que je prononceaujourd'hui à vos oreilles. Apprenez-les et gardez-les pour les mettre en pratique.
2 The Lord our God formed a covenant with us at Horeb.	2 Yahvé notre Dieu a conclu avec nous une alliance à l'Horeb.
3 He did not make the covenant with our fathers, but with us, who are alive and in the present time.	3 Ce n'est pas avec nos pères que Yahvé a conclu cette alliance mais avec nous, nous-mêmesqui sommes ici aujourd'hui tous vivants.
4 He spoke to us face to face on the mountain, from the midst of fire.	4 Sur la montagne, au milieu du feu, Yahvé vous a parlé face à face,
5 I was the mediator, for I was in the middle between the Lord and you, at that time, to announce his words to you. For you were afraid of the fire, and so you did not ascend to the mountain. And he said:	5 et moi je me tenais alors entre Yahvé et vous pour vous faire connaître la parole de Yahvé;car, craignant le feu, vous n'étiez pas montés sur la montagne. Il dit:
6 ‘I am the Lord your God, who led you away from the land of Egypt, from the house of servitude.	6 "Je suis Yahvé ton Dieu, qui t'ai fait sortir du pays d'Egypte, de la maison de servitude.
7 You shall not have strange gods in my sight.	7 "Tu n'auras pas d'autres dieux devant moi.
8 You shall not make for yourself a graven image, nor the likeness of anything, which is in heaven above, or on earth below, or which abides in the waters under the earth.	8 "Tu ne te feras aucune image sculptée de rien qui ressemble à ce qui est dans les cieux là-haut,ou sur la terre ici-bas, ou dans les eaux au-dessous de la terre.
9 You shall not adore and you shall not worship these things. For I am the Lord your God, a jealous God, repaying the iniquity of the fathers upon the sons to the third and fourth generation to those who hate me,	9 Tu ne te prosterneras pas devant ces dieux ni ne les serviras. Car moi, Yahvé, ton Dieu, je suisun Dieu jaloux, qui punis la faute des pères sur les enfants, les petits-enfants et les arrière-petits-enfants, pourceux qui me haïssent,
10 and acting with mercy in thousands of ways to those who love me and keep my precepts.	10 mais qui fais grâce à des milliers, pour ceux qui m'aiment et gardent mes commandements.
11 You shall not use the name of the Lord your God in vain. For he will not go unpunished who takes up his name over an unimportant matter.	11 "Tu ne prononceras pas le nom de Yahvé ton Dieu à faux, car Yahvé ne laisse pas impunicelui qui prononce son nom à faux.
12 Observe the day of the Sabbath, so that you may sanctify it, just as the Lord your God has instructed you.	12 "Observe le jour du sabbat pour le sanctifier, comme te l'a commandé Yahvé, ton Dieu.
13 For six days, you shall labor and do all your work.	13 Pendant six jours tu travailleras et tu feras tout ton ouvrage,
14 The seventh is the day of the Sabbath, that is, the rest of the Lord your God. You shall not do any work in it, nor shall your son, nor daughter, nor man servant, nor woman servant, nor ox, nor donkey, nor any of your cattle, nor the sojourner who is within your gates, so that your men and woman servants may rest, just as you do.	14 mais le septième jour est un sabbat pour Yahvé ton Dieu. Tu n'y feras aucun ouvrage, toi, niton fils, ni ta fille, ni ton serviteur, ni ta servante, ni ton boeuf, ni ton âne ni aucune de tes bêtes, ni l'étranger quiest dans tes portes. Ainsi, comme toi-même, ton serviteur et ta servante pourront se reposer.
15 Remember that you also were servants in Egypt, and the Lord your God led you away from that place with a strong hand and an outstretched arm. Because of this, he has instructed you so that you would observe the Sabbath day.	15 Tu te souviendras que tu as été en servitude au pays d'Egypte et que Yahvé ton Dieu t'en afait sortir d'une main forte et d'un bras étendu; c'est pourquoi Yahvé ton Dieu t'a commandé de garder le jour dusabbat.
16 Honor your father and mother, just as the Lord your God has instructed you, so that you may live a long time, and so that it may be well with you in the land, which the Lord your God will give to you.	16 "Honore ton père et ta mère, comme te l'a commandé Yahvé ton Dieu, afin que se prolongenttes jours et que tu sois heureux sur la terre que Yahvé ton Dieu te donne.
17 You shall not murder.	17 "Tu ne tueras pas.
18 And you shall not commit adultery.	18 "Tu ne commettras pas l'adultère.
19 And you shall not commit theft.	19 "Tu ne voleras pas.
20 Neither shall you speak false testimony against your neighbor.	20 "Tu ne porteras pas de faux témoignage contre ton prochain.
21 You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, nor his house, nor his field, nor his man servant, nor his woman servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything out of all that is his.’	21 "Tu ne convoiteras pas la femme de ton prochain, tu ne désireras ni sa maison, ni son champ,ni son serviteur ou sa servante, ni son boeuf ou son âne: rien de ce qui est à ton prochain."
22 The Lord spoke these words to the entire multitude of you on the mountain, from the midst of the fire and the cloud and the darkness, with a loud voice, adding nothing more. And he wrote them on two tablets of stone, which he delivered to me.	22 Telles sont les paroles que vous adressa Yahvé quand vous étiez tous assemblés sur lamontagne. Il vous parla du milieu du feu, dans la nuée et les ténèbres, d'une voix forte. Il n'y ajouta rien et lesécrivit sur deux tables de pierre qu'il me donna.
23 Then, after you heard the voice from the midst of the darkness, and you saw the mountain burning, you approached me, all you leaders of the tribes and those greater by birth. And you said:	23 Or, lorsque vous eûtes entendu cette voix sortir des ténèbres, tandis que la montagne était enfeu, vous tous, chefs de tribus et anciens, vous vîntes à moi
24 ‘Behold, the Lord our God has revealed to us his majesty and his greatness. We have heard his voice from the midst of fire, and we have proven today that, though God is speaking with man, man has lived.	24 et vous me dîtes: "Voici que Yahvé notre Dieu nous a montré sa gloire et sa grandeur, et quenous avons entendu sa voix du milieu du feu. Nous avons vu aujourd'hui que Dieu peut parler à l'homme, etl'homme rester en vie.
25 Therefore, why should we die, and why should this very great fire devour us? For if we hear the voice of the Lord our God any longer, we will die.	25 Et maintenant, pourquoi devrions-nous mourir? Car ce grand feu pourrait nous dévorer sinous continuons à écouter la voix de Yahvé notre Dieu, et nous pourrions mourir.
26 What is all flesh, that it would hear the voice of the living God, who speaks from the midst of fire, just as we have heard it, and be able to live?	26 Est-il en effet un être de chair qui puisse rester en vie, après avoir entendu comme nous lavoix du Dieu vivant parlant du milieu du feu?
27 Instead, you should approach and listen to all the things that the Lord our God will say to you. And you will speak to us, and we will listen and do these things.’	27 Toi, approche pour entendre tout ce que dira Yahvé notre Dieu, puis tu nous répéteras ce queYahvé notre Dieu t'aura dit; nous l'écouterons et le mettrons en pratique."
28 But when the Lord had heard this, he said to me: ‘I have heard the voice of the words of this people, which they spoke to you. All this, they have spoken well.	28 Yahvé entendit ce que vous disiez et il me dit: "J'ai entendu les paroles de ce peuple. Tout cequ'ils t'ont dit est bien.
29 Who will grant to them to have such a mind, so that they may fear me, and may keep all my commandments at all times, so that it may be well with them and with their sons forever?	29 Ah! si leur coeur pouvait toujours être ainsi, pour me craindre et garder mescommandements en sorte qu'ils soient heureux à jamais, eux et leurs fils.
30 Go and say to them: Return to your tents.	30 Va leur dire: Retournez à vos tentes.
31 But as for you, stand here with me, and I will speak to you all my commandments and ceremonies, as well as judgments. These, you shall teach them, so that they may do them in the land, which I will give to them as a possession.	31 Mais toi, tu te tiendras ici auprès de moi, je te dirai tous les commandements, les lois et lescoutumes que tu leur enseigneras et qu'ils mettront en pratique dans le pays que je leur donne en possession."
32 And so, keep and do the things which the Lord God has commanded you. You shall not turn aside, neither to the right, nor to the left.	32 Gardez et mettez en pratique! Ainsi vous l'a ordonné Yahvé votre Dieu. Ne vous écartez ni àdroite ni à gauche.
33 For you shall walk in the way that the Lord your God has instructed, so that you may live, and it may be well with you, and your days may be extended in the land of your possession.’ ”	33 Vous suivrez tout le chemin que Yahvé votre Dieu vous a tracé, alors vous vivrez, vousaurez bonheur et longue vie dans le pays dont vous allez prendre possession.
