CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINSAGRADA BIBLIA
Now the feast of Passover and of Unleavened Bread was two days away. And the leaders of the priests, and the scribes, were seeking a means by which they might deceitfully seize him and kill him.1 Ora, dali a dois dias seria a festa da Páscoa e dos {pães} Ázimos; e os sumos sacerdotes e os escribas buscavam algum meio de prender Jesus à traição para matá-lo.
But they said, “Not on the feast day, lest perhaps there may be a tumult among the people.”2 Mas não durante a festa, diziam eles, para não haver talvez algum tumulto entre o povo.
And when he was in Bethania, in the house of Simon the leper, and was reclining to eat, a woman arrived having an alabaster container of ointment, of precious spikenard. And breaking open the alabaster container, she poured it over his head.3 Jesus se achava em Betânia, em casa de Simão, o leproso. Quando ele se pôs à mesa, entrou uma mulher trazendo um vaso de alabastro cheio de um perfume de nardo puro, de grande preço, e, quebrando o vaso, derramou-lho sobre a cabeça.
But there were some who became indignant within themselves and who were saying: “What is the reason for this waste of the ointment?4 Alguns, porém, ficaram indignados e disseram entre si: Por que este desperdício de bálsamo?
For this ointment could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii and been given to the poor.” And they murmured against her.5 Poder-se-ia tê-lo vendido por mais de trezentos denários, e os dar aos pobres. E irritavam-se contra ela.
But Jesus said: “Permit her. What is the reason that you trouble her? She has done a good deed for me.6 Mas Jesus disse-lhes: Deixai-a. Por que a molestais? Ela me fez uma boa obra.
For the poor, you have with you always. And whenever you wish, you are able to do good to them. But you do not have me always.7 Vós sempre tendes convosco os pobres e, quando quiserdes, podeis fazer-lhes bem; mas a mim não me tendes sempre.
But she has done what she could. She has arrived in advance to anoint my body for burial.8 Ela fez o que pode: embalsamou-me antecipadamente o corpo para a sepultura.
Amen I say to you, wherever this Gospel shall be preached throughout the entire world, the things she has done also shall be told, in memory of her.”9 Em verdade vos digo: onde quer que for pregado em todo o mundo o Evangelho, será contado para sua memória o que ela fez.
And Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve, went away, to the leaders of the priests, in order to betray him to them.10 Judas Iscariotes, um dos Doze, foi avistar-se com os sumos sacerdotes para lhes entregar Jesus.
And they, upon hearing it, were gladdened. And they promised him that they would give him money. And he sought an opportune means by which he might betray him.11 A esta notícia, eles alegraram-se e prometeram dar-lhe dinheiro. E ele buscava ocasião oportuna para o entregar.
And on the first day of Unleavened Bread, when they immolate the Passover, the disciples said to him, “Where do you want us to go and prepare for you to eat the Passover?”12 No primeiro dia dos Ázimos, em que se imolava a Páscoa, perguntaram-lhe os discípulos: Onde queres que preparemos a refeição da Páscoa?
And he sent two of his disciples, and he said to them: “Go into the city. And you will meet a man carrying a pitcher of water; follow him.13 Ele enviou dois dos seus discípulos, dizendo: Ide à cidade, e sair-vos-á ao encontro um homem, carregando um cântaro de água.
And wherever he will have entered, say to the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher says: Where is my dining room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’14 Segui-o e, onde ele entrar, dizei ao dono da casa: O Mestre pergunta: Onde está a sala em que devo comer a Páscoa com os meus discípulos?
And he will show you a large cenacle, fully furnished. And there, you shall prepare it for us.”15 E ele vos mostrará uma grande sala no andar superior, mobiliada e pronta. Fazei ali os preparativos.
And his disciples departed and went into the city. And they found it just as he had told them. And they prepared the Passover.16 Partiram os discípulos para a cidade e acharam tudo como Jesus lhes havia dito, e prepararam a Páscoa.
Then, when evening came, he arrived with the twelve.17 Chegando a tarde, dirigiu-se ele para lá com os Doze.
And while reclining and eating with them at table, Jesus said, “Amen I say to you, that one of you, who eats with me, will betray me.”18 E enquanto estavam sentados à mesa e comiam, Jesus disse: Em verdade vos digo: um de vós que come comigo me há de entregar.
But they began to be sorrowful and to say to him, one at a time: “Is it I?”19 Começaram a entristecer-se e a perguntar-lhe, um após outro: Porventura sou eu?
And he said to them: “It is one of the twelve, who dips his hand with me in the dish.20 Respondeu-lhes ele: É um dos Doze, que se serve comigo do mesmo prato.
And indeed, the Son of man goes, just as it has been written of him. But woe to that man by whom the Son of man will be betrayed. It would be better for that man if he had never been born.”21 O Filho do homem vai, segundo o que dele está escrito, mas ai daquele homem por quem o Filho do homem for traído! Melhor lhe seria que nunca tivesse nascido...
And while eating with them, Jesus took bread. And blessing it, he broke it and gave it to them, and he said: “Take. This is my body.”22 Durante a refeição, Jesus tomou o pão e, depois de o benzer, partiu-o e deu-lho, dizendo: Tomai, isto é o meu corpo.
And having taken the chalice, giving thanks, he gave it to them. And they all drank from it.23 Em seguida, tomou o cálice, deu graças e apresentou-lho, e todos dele beberam.
And he said to them: “This is my blood of the new covenant, which shall be shed for many.24 E disse-lhes: Isto é o meu sangue, o sangue da aliança, que é derramado por muitos.
Amen I say to you, that I will no longer drink from this fruit of the vine, until that day when I will drink it new in the kingdom of God.”25 Em verdade vos digo: já não beberei do fruto da videira, até aquele dia em que o beberei de novo no Reino de Deus.
And having sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.26 Terminado o canto dos Salmos, saíram para o monte das Oliveiras.
And Jesus said to them: “You will all fall away from me in this night. For it has been written: ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.’27 E Jesus disse-lhes: Vós todos vos escandalizareis, pois está escrito: Ferirei o pastor, e as ovelhas serão dispersas {Zac 13,7}.
But after I have risen again, I will go before you to Galilee.”28 Mas depois que eu ressurgir, eu vos precederei na Galiléia.
Then Peter said to him, “Even if all will have fallen away from you, yet I will not.”29 Entretanto, Pedro lhe respondeu: Ainda que todos se escandalizem de ti, eu, porém, nunca!
And Jesus said to him, “Amen I say to you, that this day, in this night, before the rooster has uttered its voice twice, you will deny me three times.”30 Jesus disse-lhe: Em verdade te digo: hoje, nesta mesma noite, antes que o galo cante duas vezes, três vezes me terás negado.
But he spoke further, “Even if I must die along with you, I will not deny you.” And they all spoke similarly also.31 Mas Pedro repetia com maior ardor: Ainda que seja preciso morrer contigo, não te renegarei.E todos disseram o mesmo.
And they went to a country estate, by the name of Gethsemani. And he said to his disciples, “Sit here, while I pray.”32 Foram em seguida para o lugar chamado Getsêmani, e Jesus disse a seus discípulos: Sentai-vos aqui, enquanto vou orar.
And he took Peter, and James, and John with him. And he began to be afraid and wearied.33 Levou consigo Pedro, Tiago e João; e começou a ter pavor e a angustiar-se.
And he said to them: “My soul is sorrowful, even unto death. Remain here and be vigilant.”34 Disse-lhes: A minha alma está numa tristeza mortal; ficai aqui e vigiai.
And when he had proceeded on a little ways, he fell prostrate on the ground. And he prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass away from him.35 Adiantando-se alguns passos, prostrou-se com a face por terra e orava que, se fosse possível, passasse dele aquela hora.
And he said: “Abba, Father, all things are possible to you. Take this chalice from me. But let it be, not as I will, but as you will.”36 Aba! {Pai!}, suplicava ele. Tudo te é possível; afasta de mim este cálice! Contudo, não se faça o que eu quero, senão o que tu queres.
And he went and found them sleeping. And he said to Peter: “Simon, are you sleeping? Were you not able to be vigilant for one hour?37 Em seguida, foi ter com seus discípulos e achou-os dormindo. Disse a Pedro: Simão, dormes? Não pudeste vigiar uma hora!
Watch and pray, so that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”38 Vigiai e orai, para que não entreis em tentação. Pois o espírito está pronto, mas a carne é fraca.
And going away again, he prayed, saying the same words.39 Afastou-se outra vez e orou, dizendo as mesmas palavras.
And upon returning, he found them sleeping yet again, (for their eyes were heavy) and they did not know how to respond to him.40 Voltando, achou-os de novo dormindo, porque seus olhos estavam pesados; e não sabiam o que lhe responder.
And he arrived for the third time, and he said to them: “Sleep now, and take rest. It is enough. The hour has arrived. Behold, the Son of man will be betrayed into the hands of sinners.41 Voltando pela terceira vez, disse-lhes: Dormi e descansai. Basta! Veio a hora! O Filho do homem vai ser entregue nas mãos dos pecadores.
Rise up, let us go. Behold, he who will betray me is near.”42 Levantai-vos e vamos! Aproxima-se o que me há de entregar.
And while he was still speaking, Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve, arrived, and with him was a large crowd with swords and clubs, sent from the leaders of the priests, and the scribes, and the elders.43 Ainda falava, quando chegou Judas Iscariotes, um dos Doze, e com ele um bando armado de espadas e cacetes, enviado pelos sumos sacerdotes, escribas e anciãos.
Now his betrayer had given them a sign, saying: “He whom I shall kiss, it is he. Take hold of him, and lead him away cautiously.”44 Ora, o traidor tinha-lhes dado o seguinte sinal: Aquele a quem eu beijar é ele. Prendei-o e levai-o com cuidado.
And when he had arrived, immediately drawing near to him, he said: “Hail, Master!” And he kissed him.45 Assim que ele se aproximou de Jesus, disse: Rabi!, e o beijou.
But they laid hands on him and held him.46 Lançaram-lhe as mãos e o prenderam.
Then a certain one of those standing near, drawing a sword, struck a servant of the high priest and cut off his ear.47 Um dos circunstantes tirou da espada, feriu o servo do sumo sacerdote e decepou-lhe a orelha.
And in response, Jesus said to them: “Have you set out to apprehend me, just as if to a robber, with swords and clubs?48 Mas Jesus tomou a palavra e disse-lhes: Como a um bandido, saístes com espadas e cacetes para prender-me!
Daily, I was with you in the temple teaching, and you did not take hold of me. But in this way, the scriptures are fulfilled.”49 Entretanto, todos os dias estava convosco, ensinando no templo, e não me prendestes. Mas isso acontece para que se cumpram as Escrituras.
Then his disciples, leaving him behind, all fled away.50 Então todos o abandonaram e fugiram.
Now a certain young man followed him, having nothing but a fine linen cloth over himself. And they took hold of him.51 Seguia-o um jovem coberto somente de um pano de linho; e prenderam-no.
But he, rejecting the fine linen cloth, escaped from them naked.52 Mas, lançando ele de si o pano de linho, escapou-lhes despido.
And they led Jesus to the high priest. And all the priests and the scribes and the elders came together.53 Conduziram Jesus à casa do sumo sacerdote, onde se reuniram todos os sacerdotes, escribas e anciãos.
But Peter followed him from a distance, even into the court of the high priest. And he sat with the servants at the fire and warmed himself.54 Pedro o foi seguindo de longe até dentro do pátio. Sentou-se junto do fogo com os servos e aquecia-se.
Yet truly, the leaders of the priests and the entire council sought testimony against Jesus, so that they might deliver him to death, and they found none.55 Os sumos sacerdotes e todo o conselho buscavam algum testemunho contra Jesus, para o condenar à morte, mas não o achavam.
For many spoke false testimony against him, but their testimony did not agree.56 Muitos diziam falsos testemunhos contra ele, mas seus depoimentos não concordavam.
And certain ones, rising up, bore false witness against him, saying:57 Levantaram-se, então, alguns e deram esse falso testemunho contra ele:
“For we heard him say, ‘I will destroy this temple, made with hands, and within three days I will build another, not made with hands.’ ”58 Ouvimo-lo dizer: Eu destruirei este templo, feito por mãos de homens, e em três dias edificarei outro, que não será feito por mãos de homens.
And their testimony did not agree.59 Mas nem neste ponto eram coerentes os seus testemunhos.
And the high priest, rising up in their midst, questioned Jesus, saying, “Do you have nothing to say in answer to the things that are brought against you by these ones?”60 O sumo sacerdote levantou-se no meio da assembléia e perguntou a Jesus: Não respondes nada? O que é isto que dizem contra ti?
But he was silent and gave no answer. Again, the high priest questioned him, and he said to him, “Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed God?”61 Mas Jesus se calava e nada respondia. O sumo sacerdote tornou a perguntar-lhe: És tu o Cristo, o Filho de Deus bendito?
Then Jesus said to him: “I am. And you shall see the Son of man sitting at the right hand of the power of God and arriving with the clouds of heaven.”62 Jesus respondeu: Eu o sou. E vereis o Filho do Homem sentado à direita do poder de Deus, vindo sobre as nuvens do céu.
Then the high priest, rending his garments, said: “Why do we still require witnesses?63 O sumo sacerdote rasgou então as suas vestes. Para que desejamos ainda testemunhas?!, exclamou ele.
You have heard the blasphemy. How does it seem to you?” And they all condemned him, as guilty unto death.64 Ouvistes a blasfêmia! Que vos parece? E unanimemente o julgaram merecedor da morte.
And some began to spit on him, and to cover his face and to strike him with fists, and to say to him, “Prophesy.” And the servants struck him with the palms their hands.65 Alguns começaram a cuspir nele, a tapar-lhe o rosto, a dar-lhe socos e a dizer-lhe: Adivinha! Os servos igualmente davam-lhe bofetadas.
And while Peter was in the court below, one of the maidservants of the high priest arrived.66 Estando Pedro embaixo, no pátio, veio uma das criadas do sumo sacerdote.
And when she had seen Peter warming himself, she stared at him, and she said: “You also were with Jesus of Nazareth.”67 Ela fixou os olhos em Pedro, que se aquecia, e disse: Também tu estavas com Jesus de Nazaré.
But he denied it, saying, “I neither know nor understand what you saying.” And he went outside, in front of the court; and a rooster crowed.68 Ele negou: Não sei, nem compreendo o que dizes. E saiu para a entrada do pátio; e o galo cantou.
Then again, when a maidservant had seen him, she began to say to the bystanders, “For this is one of them.”69 A criada, que o vira, começou a dizer aos circunstantes: Este faz parte do grupo deles.
But he denied it again. And after a little while, again those standing near said to Peter: “In truth, you are one of them. For you, too, are a Galilean.”70 Mas Pedro negou outra vez. Pouco depois, os que ali estavam diziam de novo a Pedro: Certamente tu és daqueles, pois és galileu.
Then he began to curse and to swear, saying, “For I do not know this man, about whom you are speaking.”71 Então ele começou a praguejar e a jurar: Não conheço esse homem de quem falais.
And immediately the rooster crowed again. And Peter remembered the word that Jesus had said to him, “Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.” And he began to weep.72 E imediatamente cantou o galo pela segunda vez. Pedro lembrou-se da palavra que Jesus lhe havia dito: Antes que o galo cante duas vezes, três vezes me negarás. E, lembrando-se disso, rompeu em soluços.
