And it happened that, when Jesus had completed all these words, he said to his disciples,1 Et factum est, cum consum masset Iesus sermones hos omnes, dixitdiscipulis suis:
“You know that after two days the Passover will begin, and the Son of man will be handed over to be crucified.”2 “ Scitis quia post biduum Pascha fiet, et Filius hoministraditur, ut crucifigatur ”.
Then the leaders of the priests and the elders of the people were gathered together in the court of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas.3 Tunc congregati sunt principes sacerdotum et seniores populi in aulamprincipis sacerdotum, qui dicebatur Caiphas,
And they took counsel so that by deceitfulness they might take hold of Jesus and kill him.4 et consilium fecerunt, ut Iesumdolo tenerent et occiderent;
But they said, “Not on the feast day, lest perhaps there may be a tumult among the people.”5 dicebant autem: “ Non in die festo, ne tumultusfiat in populo ”.
And when Jesus was in Bethania, in the house of Simon the leper,6 Cum autem esset Iesus in Bethania, in domo Simonis leprosi,
a woman drew near to him, holding an alabaster box of precious ointment, and she poured it over his head while he was reclining at table.7 accessit ad eummulier habens alabastrum unguenti pretiosi et effudit super caput ipsiusrecumbentis.
But the disciples, seeing this, were indignant, saying: “What is the purpose of this waste?8 Videntes autem discipuli, indignati sunt dicentes: “ Ut quidperditio haec?
For this could have been sold for a great deal, so as to be given to the poor.”9 Potuit enim istud venumdari multo et dari pauperibus ”.
But Jesus, knowing this, said to them: “Why are you bothering this woman? For she has done a good deed to me.10 Sciens autem Iesus ait illis: “ Quid molesti estis mulieri? Opus enim bonumoperata est in me;
For the poor you will always have with you. But you will not always have me.11 nam semper pauperes habetis vobiscum, me autem non semperhabetis.
For in pouring this ointment on my body, she has prepared for my burial.12 Mittens enim haec unguentum hoc supra corpus meum, ad sepeliendum mefecit.
Amen I say to you, wherever this Gospel will be preached in the whole world, what she has done also shall be told, in memory of her.”13 Amen dico vobis: Ubicumque praedicatum fuerit hoc evangelium in totomundo, dicetur et quod haec fecit in memoriam eius ”.
Then one of the twelve, who was called Judas Iscariot, went to the leaders of the priests,14 Tunc abiit unus de Duodecim, qui dicebatur Iudas Iscariotes, ad principessacerdotum
and he said to them, “What are you willing to give me, if I hand him over to you?” So they appointed thirty pieces of silver for him.15 et ait: “ Quid vultis mihi dare, et ego vobis eum tradam? ”.At illi constituerunt ei triginta argenteos.
And from then on, he sought an opportunity to betray him.16 Et exinde quaerebatopportunitatem, ut eum traderet.
Then, on the first day of Unleavened Bread, the disciples approached Jesus, saying, “Where do you want us to prepare for you to eat the Passover?”17 Prima autem Azymorum accesserunt discipuli ad Iesum dicentes: “ Ubi visparemus tibi comedere Pascha? ”.
So Jesus said, “Go into the city, to a certain one, and say to him: ‘The Teacher said: My time is near. I am observing the Passover with you, along with my disciples.’ ”18 Ille autem dixit: “ Ite in civitatem adquendam et dicite ei: “Magister dicit: Tempus meum prope est; apud te facioPascha cum discipulis meis” ”.
And the disciples did just as Jesus appointed to them. And they prepared the Passover.19 Et fecerunt discipuli, sicut constituitillis Iesus, et paraverunt Pascha.
Then, when evening arrived, he sat at table with his twelve disciples.20 Vespere autem facto, discumbebat cum Duodecim.
And while they were eating, he said: “Amen I say to you, that one of you is about to betray me.”21 Et edentibus illis, dixit:“ Amen dico vobis: Unus vestrum me traditurus est ”.
And being greatly saddened, each one of them began to say, “Surely, it is not I, Lord?”22 Et contristativalde, coeperunt singuli dicere ei: “ Numquid ego sum, Domine? ”.
But he responded by saying: “He who dips his hand with me into the dish, the same will betray me.23 At ipserespondens ait: “ Qui intingit mecum manum in paropside, hic me tradet.
Indeed, the Son of man goes, just as it has been written about him. But woe to that man by whom the Son of man will be betrayed. It would be better for that man if he had not been born.”24 Filius quidem hominis vadit, sicut scriptum est de illo; vae autem homini illi, per quem Filius hominis traditur! Bonum erat ei, si natus non fuisset homo ille”.
Then Judas, who betrayed him, responded by saying, “Surely, it is not I, Master?” He said to him, “You have said it.”25 Respondens autem Iudas, qui tradidit eum, dixit: “ Numquid ego sum,Rabbi? ”. Ait illi: “ Tu dixisti ”.
Now while they were eating the meal, Jesus took bread, and he blessed and broke and gave it to his disciples, and he said: “Take and eat. This is my body.”26 Cenantibus autem eis, accepit Iesus panem et benedixit ac fregit deditquediscipulis et ait: “ Accipite, comedite: hoc est corpus meum ”.
And taking the chalice, he gave thanks. And he gave it to them, saying: “Drink from this, all of you.27 Etaccipiens calicem, gratias egit et dedit illis dicens: “ Bibite ex hoc omnes:
For this is my blood of the new covenant, which shall be shed for many as a remission of sins.28 hic est enim sanguis meus novi testamenti, qui pro multis effunditur inremissionem peccatorum.
But I say to you, I will not drink again from this fruit of the vine, until that day when I will drink it new with you in the kingdom of my Father.”29 Dico autem vobis: Non bibam amodo de hoc geniminevitis usque in diem illum, cum illud bibam vobiscum novum in regno Patris mei”.
And after a hymn was sung, they went out to the Mount of Olives.30 Et hymno dicto, exierunt in montem Oliveti.
Then Jesus said to them: “You will all fall away from me in this night. For it has been written: ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’31 Tunc dicit illis Iesus: “Omnes vos scandalum patiemini in me in ista nocte. Scriptum est enim:"Percutiam pastorem, et dispergentur oves gregis".
But after I have risen again, I will go before you to Galilee.”32 Postquam autemresurrexero, praecedam vos in Galilaeam ”.
Then Peter responded by saying to him, “Even if everyone else has fallen away from you, I will never fall away.”33 Respondens autem Petrus aitilli: “ Et si omnes scandalizati fuerint in te, ego numquam scandalizabor ”.
Jesus said to him, “Amen I say to you, that in this night, before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.”34 Ait illi Iesus: “ Amen dico tibi: In hac nocte, antequam gallus cantet, terme negabis ”.
Peter said to him, “Even if it is necessary for me to die with you, I will not deny you.” And all the disciples spoke similarly.35 Ait illi Petrus: “ Etiam si oportuerit me mori tecum, nonte negabo ”. Similiter et omnes discipuli dixerunt.
Then Jesus went with them to a garden, which is called Gethsemani. And he said to his disciples, “Sit down here, while I go there and pray.”36 Tunc venit Iesus cum illis in praedium, quod dicitur Gethsemani. Et dicitdiscipulis: “ Sedete hic, donec vadam illuc et orem ”.
And taking with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and saddened.37 Et assumpto Petroet duobus filiis Zebedaei, coepit contristari et maestus esse.
Then he said to them: “My soul is sorrowful, even unto death. Stay here and keep vigil with me.”38 Tunc aitillis: “ Tristis est anima mea usque ad mortem; sustinete hic et vigilatemecum ”.
And continuing on a little further, he fell prostrate on his face, praying and saying: “My Father, if it is possible, let this chalice pass away from me. Yet truly, let it not be as I will, but as you will.”39 Et progressus pusillum, procidit in faciem suam orans et dicens:“ Pater mi, si possibile est, transeat a me calix iste; verumtamen non sicutego volo, sed sicut tu ”.
And he approached his disciples and found them sleeping. And he said to Peter: “So, were you not able to keep vigil with me for one hour?40 Et venit ad discipulos et invenit eos dormientes;et dicit Petro: “ Sic non potuistis una hora vigilare mecum?
Be vigilant and pray, so that you may not enter into temptation. Indeed, the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”41 Vigilate etorate, ut non intretis in tentationem; spiritus quidem promptus est, caro auteminfirma ”.
Again, a second time, he went and prayed, saying, “My Father, if this chalice cannot pass away, unless I drink it, let your will be done.”42 Iterum secundo abiit et oravit dicens: “ Pater mi, si nonpotest hoc transire, nisi bibam illud, fiat voluntas tua ”.
And again, he went and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy.43 Et venit iterumet invenit eos dormientes: erant enim oculi eorum gravati.
And leaving them behind, again he went and prayed for the third time, saying the same words.44 Et relictis illis, iterum abiit et oravit tertio, eundem sermonem iterum dicens.
Then he approached his disciples and said to them: “Sleep now and rest. Behold, the hour has drawn near, and the Son of man will be delivered into the hands of sinners.45 Tunc venit addiscipulos et dicit illis: “ Dormite iam et requiescite; ecce appropinquavithora, et Filius hominis traditur in manus peccatorum.
Rise up; let us go. Behold, he who will betray me draws near.”46 Surgite, eamus; ecceappropinquavit, qui me tradit ”.
While he was still speaking, behold, Judas, one of the twelve, arrived, and with him was a large crowd with swords and clubs, sent from the leaders of the priests and the elders of the people.47 Et adhuc ipso loquente, ecce Iudas, unus de Duodecim, venit, et cum eo turbamulta cum gladiis et fustibus, missi a principibus sacerdotum et senioribuspopuli.
And he who betrayed him gave them a sign, saying: “Whomever I will kiss, it is he. Take hold of him.”48 Qui autem tradidit eum, dedit illis signum dicens: “ Quemcumqueosculatus fuero, ipse est; tenete eum! ”.
And quickly drawing close to Jesus, he said, “Hail, Master.” And he kissed him.49 Et confestim accedens ad Iesumdixit: “ Ave, Rabbi! ” et osculatus est eum.
And Jesus said to him, “Friend, for what purpose have you come?” Then they approached, and they put their hands on Jesus, and they held him.50 Iesus autem dixit illi: “Amice, ad quod venisti! ”. Tunc accesserunt et manus iniecerunt in Iesum ettenuerunt eum.
And behold, one of those who were with Jesus, extending his hand, drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.51 Et ecce unus ex his, qui erant cum Iesu, extendens manumexemit gladium suum et percutiens servum principis sacerdotum amputavitauriculam eius.
Then Jesus said to him: “Put your sword back in its place. For all who take up the sword shall perish by the sword.52 Tunc ait illi Iesus: “ Converte gladium tuum in locum suum. Omnes enim, quiacceperint gladium, gladio peribunt.
Or do you think that I cannot ask my Father, so that he would give me, even now, more than twelve legions of Angels?53 An putas quia non possum rogare Patremmeum, et exhibebit mihi modo plus quam duodecim legiones angelorum?
How then would the Scriptures be fulfilled, which say that it must be so?”54 Quomodoergo implebuntur Scripturae quia sic oportet fieri? ”.
In that same hour, Jesus said to the crowds: “You went out, as if to a robber, with swords and clubs to seize me. Yet I sat daily with you, teaching in the temple, and you did not take hold of me.55 In illa hora dixitIesus turbis: “ Tamquam ad latronem existis cum gladiis et fustibuscomprehendere me? Cotidie sedebam docens in templo, et non me tenuistis ”.
But all this has happened so that the Scriptures of the prophets may be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples fled, abandoning him.56 Hoc autem totum factum est, ut implerentur scripturae Prophetarum. Tuncdiscipuli omnes, relicto eo, fugerunt.
But those who were holding Jesus led him to Caiaphas, the high priest, where the scribes and the elders had joined together.57 Illi autem tenentes Iesum duxerunt ad Caipham principem sacerdotum, ubiscribae et seniores convenerant.
Then Peter followed him from a distance, as far as the court of the high priest. And going inside, he sat down with the servants, so that he might see the end.58 Petrus autem sequebatur eum a longe usque inaulam principis sacerdotum; et ingressus intro sede bat cum ministris, utvideret finem.
Then the leaders of the priests and the entire council sought false testimony against Jesus, so that they might deliver him to death.59 Principes autem sacerdotum et omne concilium quaerebant falsumtestimonium contra Iesum, ut eum morti traderent,
And they did not find any, even though many false witnesses had come forward. Then, at the very end, two false witnesses came forward,60 et non invenerunt, cummulti falsi testes accessissent. Novissime autem venientes duo
and they said, “This man said: ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God, and, after three days, to rebuild it.’ ”61 dixerunt: “Hic dixit: “Possum destruere templum Dei et post triduum aedificare illud””.
And the high priest, rising up, said to him, “Have you nothing to respond to what these ones testify against you?”62 Et surgens princeps sacerdotum ait illi: “ Nihil respondes? Quid istiadversum te testificantur? ”.
But Jesus was silent. And the high priest said to him, “I bind you by an oath to the living God to tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God.”63 Iesus autem tacebat. Et princeps sacerdotumait illi: “ Adiuro te per Deum vivum, ut dicas nobis, si tu es Christus FiliusDei ”.
Jesus said to him: “You have said it. Yet truly I say to you, hereafter you shall see the Son of man sitting at the right hand of the power of God, and coming on the clouds of heaven.”64 Dicit illi Iesus: “ Tu dixisti. Verumtamen dico vobis: Amodovidebitis Filium hominis sedentem a dextris Virtutis et venientem in nubibuscaeli ”.
Then the high priest tore his garments, saying: “He has blasphemed. Why do we still need witnesses? Behold, you have now heard the blasphemy.65 Tunc princeps sacerdotum scidit vestimenta sua dicens: “ Blasphemavit! Quidadhuc egemus testibus? Ecce nunc audistis blasphemiam.
How does it seem to you?” So they responded by saying, “He is guilty unto death.”66 Quid vobis videtur?”. Illi autem respondentes dixerunt: “ Reus est mortis! ”.
Then they spit in his face, and they struck him with fists. And others struck his face with the palms of their hands,67 Tuncexspuerunt in faciem eius et colaphis eum ceciderunt; alii autem palmas infaciem ei dederunt
saying: “Prophesy for us, O Christ. Who is the one that struck you?”68 dicentes: “ Prophetiza nobis, Christe: Quis est, qui tepercussit? ”.
Yet truly, Peter sat outside in the courtyard. And a maidservant approached him, saying, “You also were with Jesus the Galilean.”69 Petrus vero sedebat foris in atrio; et accessit ad eum una ancilla dicens:“ Et tu cum Iesu Galilaeo eras! ”.
But he denied it in the sight of them all, saying, “I do not know what you are saying.”70 At ille negavit coram omnibus dicens:“ Nescio quid dicis! ”.
Then, as he exited by the gate, another maidservant saw him. And she said to those who were there, “This man also was with Jesus of Nazareth.”71 Exeunte autem illo ad ianuam, vidit eum alia etait his, qui erant ibi: “ Hic erat cum Iesu Nazareno! ”.
And again, he denied it with an oath, “For I do not know the man.”72 Et iterumnegavit cum iuramento: “ Non novi hominem! ”.
And after a little while, those who were standing nearby came and said to Peter: “Truly, you also are one of them. For even your manner of speaking reveals you.”73 Post pusillum autemaccesserunt, qui stabant, et dixerunt Petro: “ Vere et tu ex illis es, nam etloquela tua manifestum te facit ”.
Then he began to curse and to swear that he had not known the man. And immediately the rooster crowed.74 Tunc coepit detestari et iurare: “ Nonnovi hominem! ”. Et continuo gallus cantavit;
And Peter remembered the words of Jesus, which he had said: “Before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.” And going outside, he wept bitterly.75 et recordatus est Petrusverbi Iesu, quod dixerat: “ Priusquam gallus cantet, ter me negabis ”. Etegressus foras ploravit amare.
