1 Now the sons of Ruben and of Gad had many herds, and their substance in cattle was inestimable. And when they had seen that the lands of Jazer and Gilead were suitable for feeding animals,	1 OR i figliuoli di Ruben, e i figliuoli di Gad, aveano del bestiame in grandissimo numero: laonde, veggendo che il paese di Iazer, e il paese di Galaad, era luogo da bestiame;
2 they went to Moses, and to Eleazar the priest and the leaders of the multitude, and they said:	2 vennero, e parlarono a Mosè, e al Sacerdote Eleazaro, e a’ Capi della raunanza, dicendo:
3 “Ataroth, and Dibon, and Jazer, and Nimrah, Heshbon, and Elealeh, and Sebam, and Nebo, and Beon,	3 Atarot, e Dibon, e Iazer, e Nimra, e Hesbon, ed Eleale, e Sebam, e Nebo, e Beon,
4 the land, which the Lord has struck in the sight of the sons of Israel, is a very fertile region for pasturing animals. And we, your servants, have very many cattle.	4 che è il paese che il Signore ha percosso davanti alla raunanza d’Israele, è un paese da bestiame, e i tuoi servitori hanno del bestiame.
5 And so we beseech you, if we have found favor before you, that you give it to us, your subjects, as a possession, and that you not cause us cross the Jordan.”	5 Poi dissero: Se abbiamo trovata grazia appo te, sia dato questo paese a possedere ai tuoi servitori, e non farci passare il Giordano.
6 And Moses answered them: “Should your brothers go to battle, while you sit here?	6 Ma Mosè rispose a’ figliuoli di Gad, e a’ figliuoli di Ruben: Andrebbero i vostri fratelli alla guerra, e voi ve ne stareste qui?
7 Why do you subvert the minds of the sons of Israel, so that they might not dare to cross into the place which the Lord will give to them?	7 E perchè rendete voi fiacco il cuor de’ figliuoli d’Israele, per non passare al paese, che il Signore ha loro donato?
8 Did not your fathers act in the same way, when I sent them from Kadesh-Barnea to explore the land?	8 Così fecero i vostri padri, quando io li mandai da Cades-barnea, per vedere il paese.
9 And when they had gone all the way to the Valley of the Cluster of Grapes, having viewed the entire region, they subverted the hearts of the sons of Israel, so that they would not enter into the parts that the Lord gave to them.	9 Perciocchè essi salirono fino alla Valle di Escol, e, dopo ch’ebbero veduto il paese, renderono fiacco il cuor de’ figliuoli d’Israele, per non entrar nel paese che il Signore avea loro donato.
10 And being angry, the Lord swore an oath, saying:	10 Laonde, l’ira del Signore si accese in quel giorno, ed egli giurò, dicendo:
11 ‘These men, who ascended out of Egypt, from twenty years and above, will not see the land, which I have promised under an oath to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. For they were not willing to follow me,	11 Se gli uomini, che sono usciti fuor di Egitto, dall’età di vent’anni in su, veggono mai la terra, della quale io ho giurato ad Abrahamo, a Isacco e a Giacobbe; conciossiachè non mi abbiano seguitato appieno;
12 except Caleb, the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite, and Joshua the son of Nun; these have fulfilled my will.’	12 salvo Caleb, figliuolo di Gefunne, Chenizzeo, e Giosuè, figliuolo di Nun; perciocchè essi hanno seguitato il Signore appieno.
13 And the Lord, being angry against Israel, led them in a course through the desert for forty years, until the entire generation, which had done evil in his sight, was consumed.	13 E l’ira del Signore si accese contro a Israele; ed egli li ha fatti andar vagando per lo deserto, lo spazio di quarant’anni, finchè sia stata consumata tutta quella generazione, che avea fatto quel male nel cospetto del Signore.
14 And behold,” he said, “you have risen up in the place of your fathers, the offshoots and the nurslings of sinful men, in order to augment the fury of the Lord against Israel.	14 Ed ecco, voi siete sorti in luogo de’ vostri padri, schiatta d’uomini peccatori, per accrescere ancora l’ira del Signore contro a Israele.
15 But if you are not willing to follow him, he will leave the people behind in the wilderness, and you will have been the cause of all our deaths.”	15 Perciocchè, se voi vi stornate di dietro a lui, egli seguiterà a lasciarlo nel deserto; e così farete perir tutto questo popolo
16 But approaching closer, they said: “We will manufacture sheep pens and cattle stalls, as well as fortified cities, for our little ones.	16 Ma essi si accostarono a lui, e dissero: Noi edificheremo qui delle mandre per lo nostro bestiame, e delle città per le nostre famiglie.
17 But we ourselves will continue on, armed and girded for battle, before the sons of Israel, until we lead them to their places. Our little ones, and whatever we may be able to have, shall be in walled cities, because of the treachery of the inhabitants.	17 Ma noi ci metteremo in ordine, pronti per andar davanti a’ figliuoli d’Israele, infino a tanto che li abbiamo condotti al luogo loro; e in questo mezzo le nostre famiglie dimoreranno nelle città forti, per tema degli abitanti del paese.
18 We will not return to our houses, even until the sons of Israel may possess their inheritance.	18 Noi non ritorneremo alle case nostre, finchè ciascuno de’ figliuoli d’Israele non sia entrato nella sua eredità.
19 Neither will we seek anything across the Jordan, because we already have our possession on its eastern side.”	19 Perciocchè, quant’è a noi, noi non possederemo nulla con loro di là dal Giordano; essendoci la nostra eredità scaduta di qua dal Giordano, verso oriente.
20 And Moses said to them: “If you accomplish what you have promised, you may go out, equipped for battle, before the Lord.	20 E Mosè disse loro: Se voi fate questa cosa, e siete in ordine per andare alla guerra, davanti al Signore;
21 And let every fighting man cross over the Jordan, until the Lord overthrows his enemies,	21 e qualunque di voi è atto alla guerra, passa il Giordano davanti al Signore, finchè egli abbia cacciati i suoi nemici dal suo cospetto;
22 and all the land is subjected to him. Then you will be guiltless with the Lord and with Israel, and you will obtain the regions which you desire before the Lord.	22 dopo che il paese sarà stato soggiogato al Signore, voi potrete ritornarvene, e sarete fuor di colpa appo il Signore, e appo Israele; e questo paese sarà vostro, per possederlo nel cospetto del Signore.
23 But if you do not do what you have said, no one could doubt that you will have sinned against God. And know this: your sin shall overtake you.	23 Ma, se non fate così, ecco, voi avrete peccato contro al Signore; e sappiate che il vostro peccato vi ritroverà.
24 Therefore, build cities for your little ones, and pens and stables for your sheep and cattle; and fulfill what you have promised.”	24 Edificatevi delle città per le vostre famiglie, e delle mandre per le vostre gregge, e fate ciò che vi è uscito della bocca.
25 And the sons of Gad and of Ruben said to Moses: “We are your servants, we shall do what you, our ruler, orders.	25 E i figliuoli di Gad, e i figliuoli di Ruben, risposero a Mosè, dicendo: I tuoi servitori faranno come il mio signore comanda.
26 We will leave behind our little ones, and our wives, and the sheep and cattle, in the cities of Gilead.	26 I nostri piccoli fanciulli, le nostre mogli, le nostre gregge, e tutto il nostro bestiame dimoreranno colà nelle città di Galaad.
27 And we, your servants, all well-equipped, will go forth to battle, just as you, our ruler, has spoken.”	27 Ma quant’è a’ tuoi servitori chiunque sarà atto alla guerra passerà alla guerra, davanti al Signore, come dice il mio signore
28 Therefore, Moses instructed Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun, and the princes of the families throughout the tribes of Israel, and he said to them:	28 E Mosè diede ordine intorno a loro al Sacerdote Eleazaro, e a Giosuè, figliuolo di Nun, e a’ Capi delle nazioni paterne delle tribù de’ figliuoli d’Israele;
29 “If the sons of Gad and the sons of Ruben cross over the Jordan with you, all armed for war before the Lord, and if the land becomes subject to you, give them Gilead as a possession.	29 e disse loro: Se tutti coloro d’infra i figliuoli di Gad, e i figliuoli di Ruben, che sono atti alla guerra, passano con voi il Giordano davanti al Signore, quando il paese vi sarà soggiogato, date loro a possedere il paese di Galaad.
30 But if they are not willing to cross with you, armed, into the land of Canaan, then let them receive places among you for their dwellings.”	30 Ma, se non passano con voi in arme, abbiano la lor possessione fra voi nel paese di Canaan.
31 And the sons of Gad and the sons of Ruben responded: “Just as the Lord has spoken to his servants, so shall we do.	31 E i figliuoli di Gad, e i figliuoli di Ruben, risposero, dicendo: Noi faremo interamente come il Signore ha detto ai tuoi servitori.
32 We will go forth, armed, before the Lord into the land of Canaan; and we acknowledge that we have already received our possession across the Jordan.”	32 Noi passeremo in arme nel paese di Canaan, davanti al Signore; sol restici la possessione della nostra eredità di qua dal Giordano.
33 And so, Moses gave to the sons of Gad and of Ruben, and to half the tribe of Manasseh, the son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon, king of the Amorites, and the kingdom of Og, king of Bashan, and their land with its surrounding cities.	33 Mosè adunque diede loro, a’ figliuoli di Gad, a’ figliuoli di Ruben, e alla metà della tribù di Manasse, figliuolo di Giuseppe, il regno di Sihon, re degli Amorrei, e il regno di Og, re di Basan, il paese diviso per le sue città, co’ lor confini, le città del paese d’ogni intorno.
34 Therefore, the sons of Gad built up Dibon, and Ataroth, and Aroer,	34 E i figliuoli di Gad riedificarono Dibon, e Atarot, e Aroer;
35 and Atroth and Shophan, and Jazer, and Jogbehah,	35 e Atrotsofan, e Iazer, e Iogbeha;
36 and Beth-Nimrah, and Beth-Haran, as fortified cities with pens for their cattle.	36 e Betnimra, e Bet-haran, città forti, e fecero ancora delle mandre per le gregge.
37 Yet truly, the sons of Ruben built up Heshbon, and Elealeh, and Kiriathaim,	37 E i figliuoli di Ruben riedificarono Hesbon, ed Eleale, e Chiriataim;
38 and Nebo, and Baal-meon (their names having been changed) and Sibmah, appointing names for the cities which they had built.	38 e Nebo, e Baal-meon, mutati i nomi, e Sibma; e posero altri nomi alle città che riedificarono.
39 Moreover, the sons of Machir, the son of Manasseh, continued on within Gilead, and they devastated it, putting to death its inhabitant, the Amorite.	39 E i figliuoli di Machir, figliuolo di Manasse, andarono in Galaad, e lo presero, e cacciarono gli Amorrei che vi erano.
40 Therefore, Moses gave the land of Gilead to Machir, the son of Manasseh, and he lived in it.	40 Mosè adunque diede Galaad a Machir, figliuolo di Manasse; ed egli abitò quivi.
41 But Jair, the son of Manasseh, went out and occupied its villages, which he called Havoth Jair, that is, the Villages of Jair.	41 Iair anch’egli, figliuolo di Manasse, andò, e prese le villate di quelli, e pose loro nome: Le villate di Iair.
42 Likewise, Nobah went forth and captured Kenath with its villages. And he called it by his own name, Nobah.	42 Noba parimente andò, e prese Chenat, e le terre del suo territorio; e chiamò quella Noba, del suo nome
