And the word of the Lord came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying:1 La palabra de Yahveh fue dirigida a Jonás, hijo de Amittay, en estos términos:
Rise and go to Nineveh, the great city, and preach in it. For its malice has ascended before my eyes.2 «Levántate, vete a Nínive, la gran ciudad, y proclama contra ella que su maldad ha subido hasta mí».
And Jonah rose in order to flee from the face of the Lord to Tarshish. And he went down to Joppa and found a ship bound for Tarshish. And he paid its fare, and he went down into it, in order to go with them to Tarshish from the face of the Lord.3 Jonás se levantó para huir a Tarsis, lejos de Yahveh, y bajó a Joppe, donde encontró un barco que salía para Tarsis: pagó su pasaje y se embarcó para ir con ellos a Tarsis, lejos de Yahveh.
But the Lord sent a great wind into the sea. And a great tempest took place in the sea, and the ship was in danger of being crushed.4 Pero Yahveh desencadenó un gran viento sobre el mar, y hubo en el mar una borrasca tan violenta que el barco amenazaba romperse.
And the mariners were afraid, and the men cried out to their god. And they threw the containers that were in the ship into the sea in order to lighten it of them. And Jonah went down into the interior of the ship, and he fell into a painful deep sleep.5 Los marineros tuvieron miedo y se pusieron a invocar cada uno a su dios; luego echaron al mar la carga del barco para aligerarlo. Jonás, mientras tanto, había bajado al fondo del barco, se había acostado y dormía profundamente.
And the helmsman approached him, and he said to him, “Why are you weighed down with sleep? Rise, call upon your God, so perhaps God will be mindful of us and we might not perish.”6 El jefe de la tripulación se acercó a él y le dijo: «¿Qué haces aquí dormido? ¡Levántate e invoca a tu Dios! Quizás Dios se preocupe de nosotros y no perezcamos».
And a man said to his shipmate, “Come, and let us cast lots, so that we may know why this disaster is upon us.” And they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah.7 Luego se dijeron unos a otros: «Ea, echemos a suertes para saber por culpa de quién nos ha venido este mal». Echaron a suertes, y la suerte cayó en Jonás.
And they said to him: “Explain to us what is the reason that this disaster is upon us. What is your work? Which is your country? And where are you going? Or which people are you from?”8 Entonces le dijeron: «Anda, indícanos tú, por quien nos ha venido este mal, cuál es tu oficio y de dónde vienes, cuál es tu país y de qué pueblo eres».
And he said to them, “I am Hebrew, and I fear the Lord God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land.”9 Les respondió: «Soy hebreo y temo a Yahveh, Dios del cielo, que hizo el mar y la tierra».
And the men were greatly afraid, and they said to him, “Why have you done this?” (For the men knew that he was fleeing from the face of the Lord, because he had told them.)10 Aquellos hombres temieron mucho y le dijeron: «¿Por qué has hecho esto?» Pues supieron los hombres que iba huyendo lejos de Yahveh por lo que él había manifestado.
And they said to him, “What are we to do with you, so that the sea will cease for us?” For the sea flowed and swelled.11 Y le preguntaron: «¿Qué hemos de hacer contigo para que el mar se nos calme?» Pues el mar seguía encrespándose.
And he said to them, “Take me, and cast me into the sea, and the sea will cease for you. For I know that it is because of me that this great tempest has come upon you.”12 Les respondió: «Agarradme y tiradme al mar, y el mar se os calmará, pues sé que es por mi culpa por lo que os ha sobrevenido esta gran borrasca».
And the men were rowing, so as to return to dry land, but they did not succeed. For the sea flowed and swelled against them.13 Los hombres se pusieron a remar con ánimo de alcanzar la costa, pero no pudieron, porque el mar seguía encrespándose en torno a ellos.
And they cried out to the Lord, and they said, “We beseech you, Lord, do not let us perish for this man’s life, and do not attribute to us innocent blood. For you, Lord, have done just as it pleased you.”14 Entonces clamaron a Yahveh, diciendo: «¡Ah, Yahveh, no nos hagas perecer a causa de este hombre, ni pongas sobre nosotros sangre inocente, ya que tú, Yahveh, has obrado conforme a tu beneplácito!»
And they took Jonah and cast him into the sea. And the sea was stilled from its fury.15 Y, agarrando a Jonás, le tiraron al mar; y el mar calmó su furia.
And the men feared the Lord greatly, and they sacrificed victims to the Lord, and they made vows.16 Y aquellos hombres temieron mucho a Yahveh; ofrecieron un sacrificio a Yahveh y le hicieron votos.
