And the word of the Lord came to me, saying:1 Thus the word of the LORD came to me:
“Son of man, prophesy about the shepherds of Israel. Prophesy, and you shall say to the shepherds: Thus says the Lord God: Woe to the shepherds of Israel who feed themselves! Should not the flocks be fed by the shepherds?2 Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel, in these words prophesy to them (to the shepherds): Thus says the Lord GOD: Woe to the shepherds of Israel who have been pasturing themselves! Should not shepherds, rather, pasture sheep?
You consumed the milk, and you covered yourselves with the wool, and you killed what was fattened. But my flock you did not feed.3 You have fed off their milk, worn their wool, and slaughtered the fatlings, but the sheep you have not pastured.
What was weak, you have not strengthened, and what was sick, you have not healed. What was broken, you have not bound, and what was cast aside, you have not led back again, and what was lost, you have not sought. Instead, you ruled over them with severity and with power.4 You did not strengthen the weak nor heal the sick nor bind up the injured. You did not bring back the strayed nor seek the lost, but you lorded it over them harshly and brutally.
And my sheep were scattered, because there was no shepherd. And they became devoured by all the wild beasts of the field, and they were dispersed.5 So they were scattered for lack of a shepherd, and became food for all the wild beasts. My sheep were scattered
My sheep have wandered to every mountain and to every exalted hill. And my flocks have been scattered across the face of the earth. And there was no one who sought them; there was no one, I say, who sought them.6 and wandered over all the mountains and high hills; my sheep were scattered over the whole earth, with no one to look after them or to search for them.
Because of this, O shepherds, listen to the word of the Lord:7 Therefore, shepherds, hear the word of the LORD:
As I live, says the Lord God, since my flocks have become a prey, and my sheep have been devoured by all the wild beasts of the field, since there was no shepherd, for my shepherds did not seek my flock, but instead the shepherds fed themselves, and they did not feed my flocks:8 As I live, says the Lord GOD, because my sheep have been given over to pillage, and because my sheep have become food for every wild beast, for lack of a shepherd; because my shepherds did not look after my sheep, but pastured themselves and did not pasture my sheep;
because of this, O shepherds, listen to the word of the Lord:9 because of this, shepherds, hear the word of the LORD:
Thus says the Lord God: Behold, I myself will be over the shepherds. I will require my flock at their hand, and I will cause them to cease, so that they no longer refrain from feeding the flock. Neither will the shepherds feed themselves any more. And I will deliver my flock from their mouth; and it will no longer be food for them.10 Thus says the Lord GOD: I swear I am coming against these shepherds. I will claim my sheep from them and put a stop to their shepherding my sheep so that they may no longer pasture themselves. I will save my sheep, that they may no longer be food for their mouths.
For thus says the Lord God: Behold, I myself will seek my sheep, and I myself will visit them.11 For thus says the Lord GOD: I myself will look after and tend my sheep.
Just as a shepherd visits his flock, in the day when he will be in the midst of his sheep that were scattered, so will I visit my sheep. And I will deliver them from all the places to which they had been scattered in the day of gloom and darkness.12 As a shepherd tends his flock when he finds himself among his scattered sheep, so will I tend my sheep. I will rescue them from every place where they were scattered when it was cloudy and dark.
And I will lead them away from the peoples, and I will gather them from the lands, and I will bring them into their own land. And I will pasture them on the mountains of Israel, by the rivers, and in all the settlements of the land.13 I will lead them out from among the peoples and gather them from the foreign lands; I will bring them back to their own country and pasture them upon the mountains of Israel (in the land's ravines and all its inhabited places).
I will feed them in very fertile pastures, and their pastures will be on the lofty mountains of Israel. There they will rest on the green grass, and they will be fed in the fat pastures, on the mountains of Israel.14 In good pastures will I pasture them, and on the mountain heights of Israel shall be their grazing ground. There they shall lie down on good grazing ground, and in rich pastures shall they be pastured on the mountains of Israel.
I will feed my sheep, and I will cause them to lie down, says the Lord God.15 I myself will pasture my sheep; I myself will give them rest, says the Lord GOD.
I will seek what had been lost. And I will lead back again what had been cast aside. And I will bind up what had been broken. And I will strengthen what had been infirm. And I will preserve what was fat and strong. And I will feed them on judgment.16 The lost I will seek out, the strayed I will bring back, the injured I will bind up, the sick I will heal (but the sleek and the strong I will destroy), shepherding them rightly.
But as for you, O my flocks, thus says the Lord God: Behold, I judge between cattle and cattle, among rams and among he-goats.17 As for you, my sheep, says the Lord GOD, I will judge between one sheep and another, between rams and goats.
Was it not enough for you to feed upon good pastures? For you even trample with your feet upon the remainder of your pastures. And when you drank the purist water, you disturbed the remainder with your feet.18 Was it not enough for you to graze on the best pasture, that you had to trample the rest of your pastures with your feet? Was it not enough for you to drink the clearest water, that you had to foul the remainder with your feet?
And my sheep were pastured from what you had trampled with your feet, and they drank from what your feet had disturbed.19 Thus my sheep had to graze on what your feet had trampled and drink what your feet had fouled.
Because of this, thus says the Lord God to you: Behold, I myself am judging between the fat cattle and the lean.20 Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: Now will I judge between the fat and the lean sheep.
For you have pushed with your sides and shoulders, and you have threatened all the weak cattle with your horns, until they were scattered abroad.21 Because you push with side and shoulder, and butt all the weak sheep with your horns until you have driven them out,
I will save my flock, and it will be no longer be a prey, and I will judge between cattle and cattle.22 I will save my sheep so that they may no longer be despoiled, and I will judge between one sheep and another.
And I will raise up over them ONE SHEPHERD, who will feed them, my servant David. He himself will feed them, and he will be their shepherd.23 I will appoint one shepherd over them to pasture them, my servant David; he shall pasture them and be their shepherd.
And I, the Lord, will be their God. And my servant David will be the leader in their midst. I, the Lord, have spoken.24 I, the LORD, will be their God, and my servant David shall be prince among them. I, the LORD, have spoken.
And I will make a covenant of peace with them. And I will cause the very harmful beasts to cease from the land. And those who are living in the desert will sleep securely in the forests.25 I will make a covenant of peace with them, and rid the country of ravenous beasts, that they may dwell securely in the desert and sleep in the forests.
And I will make them a blessing all around my hill. And I will send the rain in due time; there will be showers of blessing.26 I will place them about my hill, sending rain in due season, rains that shall be a blessing to them.
And the tree of the field will yield its fruit, and the land will yield its crop. And they will be in their own land without fear. And they shall know that I am the Lord, when I will have crushed the chains of their yoke, and when I will have rescued them from the hand of those who rule over them.27 The trees of the field shall bear their fruits, and the land its crops, and they shall dwell securely on their own soil. Thus they shall know that I am the LORD when I break the bonds of their yoke and free them from the power of those who enslaved them.
And they will no longer be a prey to the Gentiles, nor will the wild beasts of the earth devour them. Instead, they will live in confidence without any terror.28 They shall no longer be despoiled by the nations or devoured by beasts of the earth, but shall dwell secure, with no one to frighten them.
And I will raise up for them a renown branch. And they will be no longer be diminished by famine in the land, nor will they carry any longer the reproach of the Gentiles.29 I will prepare for them peaceful fields for planting; they shall no longer be carried off by famine in the land, or bear the reproaches of the nations.
And they shall know that I, the Lord their God, am with them, and that they are my people, the house of Israel, says the Lord God.30 Thus they shall know that I, the LORD, am their God, and they are my people, the house of Israel, says the Lord GOD.
For you are my flocks; the flocks of my pasture are men. And I am the Lord your God, says the Lord God.”31 (You, my sheep, you are the sheep of my pasture, and I am your God, says the Lord GOD.)
